Important notes - List is in reading order. not preference or any ranking system. My reviews are listed here as well just so you can see my thoughts. I tend to rate things more highly if I think the general rating is lower than it should be. I also tend to LOVE well written angsty stories, and character growth is DEFINITELY a plus. I haven't finished this one yet but honestly it's become one of my FAVORITES and I understand why so many people recommend it.

Our FL, Bina, has a realistic reaction to being isekai'd - she doesn't know the language or customs at the beginning, and it takes her a year to learn them - mostly because she is smart and a very hard worker. She is NOT happy about being transported to another realm and as far as she's concerned whatever grand adventure coming her way can go take a long walk off a short pier. Bina is quick on the uptake and great at thinking on her feet, and she's good at analyzing a situation and seeing a path forward. She thinks of herself as a cold, unkind person, but really she's not - Bina just doesn't help those who are cruel to her. She's actually empathetic to those who are hurting, and patient when she's trying to bring people over to her side. Bina doesn't trust anyone - especially not Lucretius - partly because of how she was used by the people who originally took her in when she arrived and then used her has a substitute to send to the 70+ year old emperor as a concubine in place of their daughter. She is wary of everyone around her and is VERY aware that a kind disposition and a pretty face could hide a monster, which honestly is a great policy to help her survive in the palace.

Lucretius, our ML, is BRILLIANT and while I can definitely see the reasoning for him to be considered OP by other reviewers, I don't think he is because of what shaped him. Luc is 27 and has been living in that snakepit his entire life, and more or less surviving on his own since he was 10 because of his stepmother's scheming. He doesn't trust anyone either, and that's part of the reason the romance in this novel is relatively slow to develop. I REALLY am enjoying watching Luc's walls break down as he starts to realize that no, Bina really is genuinely different from the people around him because of her perspective from being raised in a modern society. Poor Luc and his panic attacks at the end because he's so terrified of losing Bina - the author genuinely deals with Luc's trauma more realistically than most novels, and I LOVE that.

I LOVE that the novel discusses things like the prevalence of sexism, polygamy, gender discrimination in how children are raised and treated, and consent or lack thereof because it has some fantastic social commentary on both an "idealized" medieval-type society and modern Korean society. This quote was one of my FAVORITES so far - "A woman didn't have any obligation to return a man's feeling. It wasn't my duty to love him just because he felt that way about me." There's distinctly less of the sentient fedoras running around mansplaining than one would frequently find in this genera. Most of the characters, men and women, are intelligent and have their own motivations and goals which feel genuine. There are rather more named women than men, which is a little unusual, but in this case it's because most of the story is told from Bina's perspective and involves the workings of the women's section of the Inner Palace. There's an internal consistency to the logic here, and how people interact with each other makes sense from a humanistic or psychological viewpoint.

I'll be honest - I read the first 39 chapters on the webnovel link and while the translation and editing was good the rest of the book was behind a paywall. For those looking for a different solution I might suggest a visit to https://****readlightnovels.net/*****empress-of-otherverse.html with all the asterisks removed. You can also go to readlightnovels.net and search for "empress" - since it was the 5th or 6th website I tried I was THRILLED it was on the first page of novels the search returned.

I honestly haven't noticed any plot holes you could drive a truck through, and will also say that I started this fairly late today, intending to read just a few chapters and go to bed early. I have failed MISERABLY at this endeavor, and it is now approximately 4 hours past when I was supposed to be in bed and I have to get up in 4 hours. OOPS. So while I understand this is not some other people's cup of tea, it is DEFINITELY my shot of whiskey. <<less
