The story is quite short and takes on a more lighthearted feel relating to a rather difficult mental illness. The dynamic between both characters were really sweet. It’s a very fictional best case scenario type story as actual medical and professional assistance take a backseat here.

Overall it doesn’t ruin the fictional essence the story aims to retain. I personally felt that the last few chapters were a bit too rushed, almost as if the author wanted to end the story quickly.

Overall it’s fluffy and I rather the MLs character and his patience. The MC is standout and if the author stayed faithful to closing off the wonderful character she’d started out with until the final pages, I feel like this would have been rated higher by me.

I liked both characters but especially the personalities and strong themes of communication and mutual respect. This author really writes these mature and respectful themes really well and for a short story this was done well, even if it wasn’t perfect.

Being a person who’s a cynic when it comes to relationships and marriage, I felt slightly moved by the author’s motivation to write this short story. Perhaps companionship isn’t as complex as we think or perhaps it is- but it takes a two people to work at things for everything to be okay.

I guess human emotions are too complex almost all the time but there is nothing that communication and effort can’t fix.

I really enjoyed this and liked that the characters were well rounded and respectful. Very mild angst and relatively good communication. For a short story there aren’t too many flaws although I would have loved to read about the friend and his mentally unstable lover. Their story seemed very interesting.

I really connected with this MC and ML. Their relationship development and especially the MCs character development was absolutely brilliant. I enjoyed the side characters and I think the questions left to be answered after reading, was suitable for this novel.I cried and laughed but mostly my heart ached from chapter 1 to 28. I felt really glad with how this book ended, without giving too much away. The novel is very well written and packs quite the punch of emotions in a mere 20 chapters. The ending seemed inevitable, ill fated from the start only to hurt each other more deeply than expected.

Although I was not surprised because from around chapter 5 I really could not see them being together and I felt a bit conflicted as to whether they were in love or just in a weirdly desperate situation. As much as the ending cleared it up, they had a dubious beginning. It never bode well from the start.I didn’t really form much attachments for the characters which I was disappointed with, perhaps I expected to feel more for them.

I did however like their characters- I thought they were well written and very realistic.When it comes to good tragedy, this one is definitely an excellent choice. I will now read the sequel and hope that the characters redeem their dreary past lives.

Otherwise, this was a very enjoyable, angsty, romantic short read. Excellent writing and storytelling! <<less <<less

I read this directly after reading the prequel, Living to Suffer, and whilst it added to the effect of the whole story, you can still enjoy this book without having read it. It’s a wonderful read but I really felt pained in my heart during these 27 chapters. It’s painful because of how realistic their lives were and what China and its people went through during those strife filled years. Also the entire time since chapter 3 I kept waiting for the shoe drop coz it always felt like they were destined to be unhappy.

I was relieved that the unhappiness wasn’t prolonged and they got the change to redeem their past lives and discover love the way it should be. Through their ups and downs and until their very ends.

I greatly enjoyed both novels, but I probably won’t ever re-read this one again due to how painful the experience was.

I also enjoyed both lead’s characters in this book, but whether I became attached or not, is yet to be known as I’m unsure myself. Although in an unexpected turn of events, I actually enjoyed the character depiction more in LTS, although they had their meritorious characters in this book too.

I liked the ending of this novel as well. Although the title seems unfitting for the ending for it felt like even death could not part them- which is my complete idea of what love really is. Call me a romantic or unrealistic or whatever, but if one truly falls in love with their soulmate; death and rebirth won’t keep you from one another. I believe in that wholeheartedly.

Overall this sequel and it’s prequel are must reads and it’s worth the pain at the end of the day. Again, beautifully written and descriptive and poetic storytelling that wrenches the heart and dampens your eyes <<less

This story is excellent if you want to get your mind off things and submerge yourself in pure and wholesome love. It’s not incredibly detailed or plot heavy, think very linear and simple storytelling.

The relationship between ML and MC is so wonderful and sweet. This story made me feel all warm and cosy inside. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a sweet and soothing read without any drama or drawn out plot points. Just note that it is a short story and therefore many things aren’t excessively elaborated and instead left for you to assume. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing with regards to this book.

The ending is a little out there... it was quite unnecessary, but let the author do what they want... and just read it to keep your daily word count going. <<less

His kindness and dedication to doing what’s right made this a wonderful and warm hearted novel. The ghosts were also really interesting with very heartbreaking backgrounds.

I think the message of bullying was highlighted and doing what’s right, no matter what, came across well. Highly recommend reading this for the novelty and MC.  <<less

I will admit that I was hella confused about the identity of Ji Qu but irrespective, the facts point more to the editor than the film emperor. Perhaps I will re-read it again and it may be more clear. It’s an excellent read either way. A strong and intelligent MC who refused to stand for being made a fool.

His revenge was hardcore, ludicrously crazy and stomach churning but who cares about morals in fiction, (just jokes- I always care about morals. ALWAYS!) because I sided with him all the way to the end.

The MC is truly psycho though- he completely removed himself from the entire situation when he plotted the mu*der and he looked upon the entire thing as if he were a bystander. Perhaps the trigger for such cold behaviour was his suspicion that his husband wanted to kill him first to live happily ever after (I’d be hella pissed).

I like to comfort myself by thinking that perhaps if the husband came clean and walked away in the beginning, instead of cheating and making the MC a fool, the MC may have been quite okay, as he never had a great desire to fight or monopolise his husband. He even stated that he was okay being left alone. It made me feel like he knew that their marriage wasn’t satisfactory to him from the beginning.

Perhaps the selfish behaviour from the MLs family as well as how the ML actively made the MC a fool with his s*upid mistress for almost their entire marriage, was another trigger. Whatever drove the MC to reveal his inner psychopath was subtly and implicitly revealed so I don’t feel like the revenge or the MCs behaviour was out of place. It’s not as if the affair was a recent activity, both the ML’s friends and family were aware of it from the beginning, even when the MC supported that bum of an ML to start up his successful company.

It was a case of an ungrateful as*hole biting the hand that feeds him, but the ML and his friends and family just took it way too far to allow the MC to forgive and forget.I guess never mess with an author... lol.

This is a must-read! It’s gripping, excellent and smart! Mostly though, it’s satisfying to see such a profound and ruthless reaction from a person betrayed. Sometimes feeling hurt and betrayed is not enough- sometimes cold and heartless revenge is just what the doctor ordered. <<less

This is certainly tragic and painful, however what made this story really affect me was how realistic and raw it is. People are that selfish and people really are that cruel. I feel the choices the MC made really were what he thought was best for him and having encountered people like the ML in real life and seeing how destructive their actions are to the people who love them, I understood the MC mostly.

Perhaps in heteros*xual relationships, some partners are left with children and find that it’s easier or necessary to stay or hold on (this is solely my opinion). They also have something “left” even if the other person leaves them, or vice versa. This story hurts because the MC really had nothing left except all his own sacrifices and the constant pain of loving someone too deeply and watching them treat your love like tr*sh. I cannot fault the MC for his pain or decisions. I also felt that the ML truly enjoyed the helplessness and dependency he caused the MC to feel, and that really triggered me because I know of people who behave this way in reality.

Just because a person loves you, does not mean you have won, does not make you the best and certainly does not mean you own them and all that they have. Love does not mean free reign and objectification of another.

The MC was also right in not rebounding, although I also understood how his wanting to get a sense of revenge made him hurt the SLS, he stopped when he saw he was going too far. I think no one is left untouched when made to feel ab*se and neglect for years and unconsciously or consciously, they too, dole it out. We are only human after all.

I think as a whole, infidelity is taken too lightly in society and it has been for years, but for many of us who still believe in the purity and weight of love, it has a massive impact on our lives. Sometimes one only has a single opportunity to give love a chance and when that chance is betrayed, perhaps the existence of love for them is destroyed too.

This book really puts all of those feelings into words. It’s not a kind book and no one is likeable. However, real humans are not likeable either, we simply learn to love and that love makes unlikeable things acceptable. Eventually when we can no longer accept such, we can choose to move on or inflict our own evil emotions on others. Sometimes moving on may not be possible but freedom always is, one way or another.

My heart broke for the MC, his weak and indecisive character was very well written. He got wrapped up by a psycho and ended up almost throwing it all away for him.

I wonder if he ever found himself after everything happened.

Anyway- this s a really good story but it’s incredibly dark and twisted. It’s not romantic or sweet. It’s about despair, helplessness and the fact that you can not run away from your choices.

Read it but expect to feel severe melancholy and pain when you’re done.
