Slow... really really slow... but extremely complex. Filled with details military campaigns and politics. Very interesting take on romance.

MC has his own background of a playboy and he does have many 'flings', but the heroines are complex, not template girls, and there are sad partings and (hopefully) happy reunions (and children out-of-wedlock...)

In fact, the children later in the series are quite interesting, each of them. There's a lot of family disfunction. The MC keeps in character and is generally a terrible father, but blames his wife and mother who are also making lots of terrible choices with great character background.What makes the larger cast so interesting is that they all have motivations in the society. The nobles have their own motives, neither all dastardly nor idealistic. Lots of village political actors, change that happens to the governance and ranks.

The MC as an reincarnator does introduce some technology and modern day ideas on finance and tactics... but so slowly, it's almost not there. The magic development fortunately has a burst of action in the 50-100 chapter range, but then recedes to the background. Magic is building up for something though, as well as the mysterious island of evil mages, probably part of the novel's main plot, which, as of 350 chapters in, we haven't seen yet.

Warnings:

This series has tons of bad elements as well... enough to turn many a reader away. It is SLOW. Slow as heck.

It is also loves getting into details about technology and overall military strategies rather than showing any of the action or fights... think of it as the board game Risk as opposed to League of legends. Instead of being there, part of the action, you basically hear the 3 year summary but going into detail of how particular strategies were made.

It's terribly, filthily Chinese nationalistic and even somewhat neo-Nazi. There's real atrocities being committed by the MC, and I've been reading them as 'character traits' consistent with the story, but they could just as easily be neo-Nazi beliefs... Like mass genocide of natives in the colonies, bringing back specifically chosen German Nazi uniform aspects, comments and references to Chinese superiority, the whole 9 yards...

Finally, despite an amazing magic system... the MC never really cares about magic. It's rather odd... During the first 100-150 chapters, there's a lot of emphasis on learning magic, then he joins the military and magic kind of disappears except as a gun-development technology. This was highly disappointing. <<less

However, I loved the author's focus on showing certain great shifts in our own history and how he illustrated them with fantasy by using a reincarnator who plagiarises Beethoven and Planck and other great innovators.Just for that, this might be the best use of the 'reincarnation into a fantasy world' from a thoughtfulness perspective that I have read.The magic system is really great, making sense of an eclectic fusion of Christianity, Enlightenment/Scientific revolution and relative truths. It makes for a great development of the reincarnator role.The characters are great in the tension between their love for family and friends, and the medieval mindsets of heresy and demonism that they have to contend with. The female lead is probably controversial, as she's lesbian, but falls in love with the MC anyway. I think it's slowly enough developed that it expands on the characters well, but somewhat... interesting...However, despite a large cast of interesting characters, there isn't much in the ways of character development. There's some limited core characters who see some changes, but they are not always leads in the plot and as there are few POV chapters, can disappear for hundreds of chapters at a time. In this, the author's newer work, Lord of the Mysteries is much better.Unfortunately, particularly later in the novel, there are more and more tangential adventures that are both random and filled with previously unexplained details... Often time skips precede and follow them, making them even further alienated from the rest of the plot. These further ruin a lot of the action and power development as they don't really display any of the multitude of qualities the MC developed or insights in magic. He always saves himself with random artifacts he suddenly has that were never mentioned before, against legendary enemies that popped up 2 paragraphs before.Still, if you can skim these tangential odysseys, then it's still a very good read. <<less
