[05] I became a monster?!

[05] I became a monster?!
Now a classic sub-genre of the Isekai genre, getting transformed into a monster is often accompanied by game elements or ability to evolve...

So many outside NU:
1. Metamorphosis (Kafka) - bug (cockroach?) - classic, amazing, depressing, and not very long, go read it. This is the grandfather of the genre
2. The Iron Teeth - goblin - by far the best - goblin MC is not reincarnated...
3. A Dragon's Curiosity - dragon/human
4. The Dark Herbalist (Russian) - goblin - VRMMO goblin series
5. Chrysalis - warrior ant fighting for queen and hive
6. Threadbare - teddy bear
7. Queen in the mud - salamander with cute magic and city building
8. Demon's virtue - an imp
9. Life reset - yet another goblin - VRMMO like Dark Herbalist
10. I don't want to be the hive queen - Vex (humanoid/ant/zerg?) - [have not read yet]
11. Fork this life - fork [have not read yet]
12. Lament of the fallen - chimeric demon/kitsune/angel - [have not yet read]
13. Vainqueur the dragon - dragon - comedy - surprisingly good worldbuilding, comedy hinders characters
14. Parasite king - parasite
15. Archaic princess - zerg
16. Everybody loves large chests - mimic
17. Is that a wisp - wisp
18. Tree of aeons - tree - good premise, inconsistent mechanics and lots of plot armour
19. The snake report - snake

If you like this type of story, you might also like Reincarnated as a Dungeon Core novels. You can check my other list if you want to see some of those.

Thanks for including novels that are not listed on novelupdates. At some point of time i enjoyed reading about bizarre reincarnations, but alas i had found out that i read best specimens that nu could have offered and so i simply switched onto different genres. Stories about ant and fork are especially endearing. It was quite interesting to read about ants’ wacky mentality and fork setting on adventure. Story about big chests starts pretty good but goes south as more female characters are introduced and plot goes boobs.

Yeah, I felt that too, unfortunately. I liked the concept, but couldn't keep interested. Chrysalis was great, fork a decent comedy (though one started strong and fell off).

About non NU novels, there’s “beast cultivation system”, xianxia magical beast (dragon) FMC.

Starts awesome, invert to a ret*rd yuri appealing mature content after the secret realm arc (almost like the author was substituted), and is dropped at ch 75 more or less.

    Still, fits the list.

Btw, if you have anything in this style (that keep a minimum quality) gimme a tip plz!

Thanks for leaving a comment and more series that fit this genre! Err, but it doesn't sound like you're strongly recommending it, so now I'm wondering whether to include it or not. The reviews on the RRL page for it are also quite mixed. Mostly liking the idea but criticising the writing style, it seems... Hope you don't mind I leave that one off the list, but hopefully people who are still looking for moar will come down and read the comments!

You know where to find me! I'll definitely keep updating this list as I find more novels in the genre! Wish I knew some more too... I'm sure a budding author out there has just started one as I type my comment!

Ah yes, I loved the author's other work The Novel's Extra. I did actually try out A Monster Who Levels Up, but didn't get into it. I should give it another try. I had forgotten about it, but it definitely fits this list -adding it in!

Something to correct, “The Wandering Inn” is not a “reincarnated as a monster” story; it’s about a girl who is teleported to another world, where she becomes an innkeeper. She calls her inn “The Wandering Inn” because she herself has wandered to another world, and has all sorts of customers throughout the story, from monsters to humans and anything in between.

Ie. it’s an “I became an innkeeper in another world” story, not an “I became an inn” story.

"Misadventures of a Rampaging Demon" is pure gold , is not an isekai but the mc is completely new to the world she finds herself in...so it's similar.

"The Demonologues" is an isekai where the MC is reincarnated as some kind of overpowered omunculus with serious mental issues caused by the whole being reincarnated and being forced to survive in a wasteland alone for years surrounded by monsters

"Lament of the fallen" is a novel focused on revenge and becoming the strongest being in the planes of existence. The MC is something similar to a chimeric being with kitsune , demon and angelic heritage able to switch forms.

"I don't want to be the hive queen" is my favorite atm. It is a story where a male fast food worker dies and gets reincarnated as a Vex Queen (humanoid lizard insect hybrid). The problem of being a queen of this race is that right after birth, she gets exiled by the Hive and is forced to build an hive of her own all by herself in an hostile forest filled with dangerous monsters. The even bigger catch is... she needs to build it by giving birth to every single new addiction of said new hive. (luckly as an hive queen she does not need a sexual partner to reproduce).

"Vainqueur the dragon" is a story about an ancient dragon known for his strength, greed and vanity who wakes up from his slumber, only to find a random isekaied adventurer attempting to steal something from his hoard. In order to be spared the Adventurer tries  talking things out with the dragon, by doing so he unwittingly reveal to Vainqueur the existence of the Adventurers guild and "the skills System". With this newfound knowledge, our prickly dragon, appoints the thief adventurer as his new chief of staff and decides to became an adventurer himself in order to earn more gold for his hoard by completing S class quests just as a dragon would. by burning everything in his path to the ground and letting his new underling do the talkings with those tiny and terrified humans

All these stories are on "Royal Road" for free, so enjoy

      Thanks digi! Great mentions!

I had forgotten about Vainqueur - only one of your additions I have read. I didn't particularly enjoy it... worldbuilding was great, and the characters were consistent, but somehow the comedy made me unable to relate and the plot seemed to jump around a bit frenetically. But I shouldn't let my tastes affect the list, still one of the most popular out there.

Of the others, Rampaging and Demonologues appear to be hiatus, so I'll leave them off.

I don't want to be a hive queen looks the most interesting - some of the reviewers are also mentioning well crafted characters.

Lament of the fallen I've seen around on the top rated for a while. At the same time, I've seen some comments on the series that say it is written blandly, very much just recounting things, rather than getting into character development and drama properly.

@tallrice to be honest I haven't finished Vainqueur either. Maybe because i was not in the mood for it or maybe because it was too much of a commitment reading such a long story at the time. I decided to mention it anyway because it is well written and has an intriguing premise, it also made me laugh a lot :D.

Regarding the two in hiatus (the bane of readers), i mentioned them because are among the best stories i have read so far of this genre and i consider worth to be read even if they will never receive an ending.

Lament is better written than many novels you find on line, yeah it focuses more on getting stronger and giving adrenaline rush rather than expanding its characters... but some people enjoys that kind of stories and i advice to give it a shot if you are into that kind of stuff (kind of like a edgy shounen)

Regarding Hive queen, just read it :D

Just weighing in my anti-recommendation for "I don't want to be the hive queen".

It's decent, but nothing to write home about.

Main character is a good person but thickheaded and stubborn in the worst ways. Traits which are, if anything, exaggerated as the story continues. The secondary main character, Clara alreadyforgothername, is straight up painful to read--somehow even more stubborn and thickheaded than the protagonist, while also being remarkably caustic even to her close friends. And not in the cute tsundere way either; in a manner that could be called "standoffish" at best and "a touchy a**hole" if one was feeling less charitable.

This thickheadedness extends into the management of the hive itself. The main character makes criminally poor use of his genetic sculpting ability, unable to come up with even the most basic templates.

Me: "A hedgehog that can shoot its quills with disproportionate force for its size? I wonder if that could make projectile-firing minions..." (this monster is never mentioned again)

Also me: "Giant spiders?!? Their web-spinning ability would be..." (the protagonist actively avoids these monsters)

Still me: "OK. You just ate a quarter of your weight in venomous insects, and even noted that they were poisonous after digesting them. Something like toxic-gas emitting monsters is clearly beyond your mental capacity, but I'm sure even you can manage to slap venom onto your warrior template...Right?" (nope)

None of his minions are more imaginative than Zerglings. And, true to form, his tactics and cleverness are at the same level. Basically anything more complex than zergling burrow-ambush-swarm tactics is completely beyond him. Even something on the level of handing a bow and arrows to his centaur-like minions is out of the question.

Basically, if you're looking for a story about a hivemind Zerg-esque swarm being awesome, this is the bottom of the barrel. And the characters are all too unlikeable or one-dimensional to make up for it.

If you can turn your brain off enough to be impressed by the protagonist, the world building and prose are decent (if nothing special), so you might potentially enjoy it. But I'd still encourage you to look elsewhere before trying this story.
