One of the aspects I like of classic yandere trope is the horror and psychological turmoil the protagonist has to go through because of the genuinely batshit-headed male lead. But we just dont want it to be plain imprisonment and forcing trope aint it. We want some level of rivalry of their will, of to imprison and to be free. That schadenfreude we feel from rooting for the protagonist to escape her fate yet anticipating for the moment when the male lead finally catch her. In my mind the concept of yandere is that when someone twisted is just so in love and devoted that they'd do ANYTHING so their loved one could be happy even though they don't really know how to do it right. It might not be perfect, sometimes it might be downright disturbing, but they're trying and it's genuine.
