Had to leave a review to go to bat for this novel--are we all even reading the same novel? Typical but not so typical showbiz transmigration novel. Prior to his transmigration the MC was a hardworking actor that was never that popular due to his face. Shen Jintai now transmigrates into a novel as a shameless second generation who succeeded as an idol who threw it all away to stalk his love, Yan Quichi. The ML is supposed to be the cold on the outside, burning up on the inside.

In... more>> order to survive, all Shen Jintai has to do is prevent the ML from getting together with the protagonist of the novel, his former rival. So what does he do? He goes to work. No, literally, he goes back to showbiz. And tries to win the favor of the protagonist. While he admires the beautiful shou from afar, trying to get closer, everyone is face slapped by his now excellent acting, professionalism, and sweet mouth.

He now has a sense of proportion. He's determined to win the protagonist over by his manliness as an amazing actor, but his system has different ideas. While winning favor he gets rewards, and is going to be an amazing shou. Lol who doesn't see this coming when the first reward is an amazing a$$?!? Lol

Other reviews describe this as too abrupt and too readily accepted, but it isn't. I believe it was a good 40 chapters in before the ML didn't assume that this wasn't some ploy to win him, and the side characters were similar. It was believable to everyone else since he hadn't interacted much with anyone else in 2 years.

As a result you see the ML gradually warm and change, prompted by some silliness (accidentally touched dat a$$!), but also respect.

And the plot!!! Omg. Reviews have complained that this has no plot, and so far it has been more slice of life in some aspects, but it is also a play within a play. Holy cow I have not read anything this good in awhile. I can't say anything more without spoilers, and I'm too lazy to learn how to hide those right now.

And props to the translation. Tidied up MTL with footnotes. A few awkward parts, but readable by and large and doesn't interrupt the flow.

The novel definitely has some cliches and catering in it, but thankfully so far it's checking all the boxes for me! I hope you give it a shot. <<less

I quite like this, with its pretty common theme of “love yourself and others will love you”. The author did well not falling into cliches, especially with the supporting characters.
For example, the white moonlight bai yueguang, though he’s two faced privately but he’s not the evil black lotus that’s out to destroy our MC, instead they even develop a real supportive friendship later on.
The MC’s stepmom, even though the family is distant & estranged, she’s not an angel but no wicked stepmother either, she doesn’t try to be... more>> a mother to our adult MC but instead understands her own position & just occasionally tries to ease the father-son relationship as much as an outsider can.
It’s great that there’s no crazy/ morally inverted/ brain hole characters here, even the process of ML falling in love and pursuing MC is very reasonable & acceptable.
Not one for dog blood drama fans, but pretty good overall to spend some time on. <<less

I was holding myself from writing review before I finish the story, but the praising and lifting to MC in story become too large that I cannot stand.

I've seen and loved a lot of more OP MCs. But this MC has no likeable point except from his acting skill. I really like the story of drama/films he acts in the story. I like ML, ML's mother and brother, I also like original story's shou, but I failed in forcing myself to like MC. I know that 90% of transmigration stories'... more>> MC are selfish and I already accepted the fact. But this MC is very selfish and it's too obvious to ignore it and like him.

The story is interesting and a good read. Four stars for me until now. May be I will give more stars after I finish reading. <<less

I loved this! I MTLed the whole thing, but I hope someone picks up the translation up again, because this is one of the best Entertainment Circle BLs out there. I'm usually not a fan of super appearance-based, feminine shou plots, and this is NOT that despite the title/summary. Amazing relationship development!

I'm bewildered as to the low ratings. I've read much weaker entertainment books that have higher ratings. *Head scratch* I like the MC; he's ambitious, and given that he's already died once, I can easily forgive him for being somewhat self-centred at the beginning of his new life as he pursues his goal of being a top actor. (Seriously, wouldn't you in his place? I mean, already died once and missed the boat, right?) Though there's a lot of fluff (so much ass description), I feel that cute meter... more>> is savagely levelled whenever a script lands in front of our MC. In those fictional movies and dramas, the writer allowed herself to go places that I just didn't see coming, given Your Rival in Love's fluffy premise. Those dramas elevate the book. If Gong Zi Yu Ge ever wants to shed her comedy focus, and head over to the darker side, I think she'd be happily hauling in 5 stars while she ruthlessly broke our hearts. Also, I think kinky translations has done a great job of injecting life in this translation. I've read MTL versions of some of the novels she has translated, thought they were kind of flat, and then went back to read her translations. Arguably the same words on the page, but somehow now there's life and dimension to the read. <<less

I have a lot of things that I love about this novel💕

But the very first thing I will say is the way the author made a fudging tearjerker plot within a very cute and sweet main story!!!!!

I can't count how many times I cried because of this novel but seriously, it was deliciously bittersweet.

Thank you very much to Kinky for translating this lovelg masterpiece💕

Take my two-cents with a grain of salt

This isn’t a bad novel, but it’s also not my favorite. The only reason I went all the way up to 164 is because I skimmed, not because I was absolutely blown away by the plot. It’s a standard “transmigrated into a novel, now I gotta survive by doing embarrassing things”. But I love entertainment novels; they can be so shallow but so much fun. I think one of the pros in this novel is how the author makes us rethink the stereotypes... more>> of being a shou & gong, & exactly what constitutes as being one or the other. It’s a bit of a pondering moment. I also appreciate the ML—he’s a CEO that doesn’t have “domineering” as his predominant characteristic. He’s also a person that looks for consent, an awkward guy who actually is more verbally expressive with his feelings than a lot of other “icy cold CEO” male leads. He’s definitely a catch.

But I just find the plot to be kind of lacklustre. I’m sure there are many with different opinions because it’s not technically a bad read. Just not my cup of tea <<less

Rating: 4.6/5

Honestly, I was on the fence at the beginning when it came to this novel because there were a lot of things that were needlessly exaggerated like the opening ceremony for the first TV drama that had a whole-ass red carpet as if it was some sort of award ceremony. I may not be familiar with the Chinese entertainment industry, but it's the first time reading about such a pompous opening ceremony for a mere TV drama. There were also other things that were a bit overdone, but my... more>> brain is a sieve and they got less as the story progressed. So let's just say that the exaggerated parts are due to the danmei CEOxMary Sue novel premise.

The thing that did it for me were the dog blood TV drama and movie plots that had me bawl each time. Forget about the actual novel plot and the actual CP, my high rating is mainly due to the different drama and movie plots. They were just that engaging.

I'm not saying that the novel plot is boring or anything. It's a bit cliché, but it's good overall. And a big plus from me for not adding any white lotus/green tea b****es. In fact, there wasn't even a pure antagonist as far as I am aware. No evil step mothers or mother-in-laws either.

The MC is a bit of a Gary Stu and things come to him really easily. The protagonist halo is strong with this one. But outside of being op at acting he seems pretty normal overall. At least his IQ and EQ seem to be fine.

The ML is the usual stoic and abstinent-looking, cold CEO who is actually a lusty stallion behind doors. He is a disciplined gentleman who keeps his skin hunger and thirst under wraps. Even after getting together with the MC he was always mindful of the MC and didn't overreach when it came to boundaries. Dude is a good guy. No complaints from me.

So why did I stop at chapter 218 instead of reading until the end? That's because I was not interested in the second extra CP, especially not when the translator even wrote a warning about the dubious consent and forceful nature of the relationship. I'm fine with having read about the lusty fairy Bai and rough Shi Lei in the extras. They were, I'm not gonna say cute, but er... interesting, their dynamic was at least. One extra CP was enough for me, no need for another. <<less

(tldr: i'd probably skip all the romance and just read the first 70 chapters lol)

How do I say this. This novel is both good and bad, but it's about different issues.

What's good is the first arc - The 'East Palace is Coming' is really good. It spans around 70-ish chapters and the whole arc; how it spans out, the logistic behind the idea of the series and everything that goes into that storyline is amazing.

I highly recommend you guys read this novel just for that first arc. I'm... more>> so thoroughly impressed -- maybe not so much in the first read, but in my second-read I was so incredibly blown away by how good the core of the film is, and how innovative it is to set it up as a character-driven tv series that blew up due to tangible and carefully portrayed charisma the MC locks into the character of Li Xu. It's like how Jack Sparrow became an icon of the Pirates of the Carribean franchise due to his portrayal -- but it's incredibly hard to actually portray that in a novel without making it seem nonsensical, especially the necessary weight to make it credible.

This novel - once you look at it with a critical eye -- actually did manage to capture and show how he blew up this character step by step. And I just think it's incredible -- especially since it doesn't specifically need 'good' acting (although he does have that, and it is a plus) -- it just needs a lot of charm and charisma. And that's the main core of why he's famous. Anyways, this arc was especially good. The others are sadly gisted over and didn't have the same keen attention to detail and investment -- but, nevertheless, the career-line of this novel is at least somewhat ok.

What's substandard is -- well, the irl portion of the novel.

After chapter 90 onwards -- in terms of pacing, it becomes a filler model. There's a lot of chapters that are just 1 single day, maybe spanning 3-5 chapters. A lot of it is small mouthfuls of emotional development for the romance-line. Which in itself isn't a bad thing - until you consider how these emotional developments doesn't have a very clear out-line and leads in circles to nowhere. There are a few significant moment of actual progress!!! Which is commendable, so clap clap clap!! But most of the time it's not those moments, it becomes messy after a while....

Characterization wise, it's not bad in terms of the context of the story (circus). But it's definitely bad when it comes to 'objectively, is it done well' -- regretfully

Some characters can definitely come across as shallow and insensitive; careless about others (which isn't a bad thing) -- even while being well-intentioned. Madam Yan's interference in certain matters (her oldest son's romance) is a prime example of this. She seems bold but she always seems to undermine the MC/ML's feelings. She seems to care, but she's always shown to be very careless in regards to respecting their choices, feelings and decisions. In any way that matters, the contradiction between what is being portrayed (warm feelings, care about one another) and what is the subtext/implication/what is shown instead (focuses on their own individual purpose/goals, regardless of others.) seems to be at odds to one another. It's hypocritical. And this is not intentional design. It's caused by contradiction and un-resolved issues with the inner workers, sadly it's not addressed in time.

What's even cheaper is that the MC's character is clearly the opposite. He's well intentioned, his thoughts/actions aligned and he does address this. He's here to point out the flaw in Madam Yan's characterization, but it doesn't make his character any better or more complex in anyway. It's just lazy that Madam Yan is characterized like this, and they could both be/do better. But they weren't chosen to do that, they weren't designed to be better. This problem was never addressed, there was no consequences. And nothing was discussed in the novel about this issue. There was no point.

Even after clear direct communication between the two, as soon as the ML shows signs of progression/development, she's back to being who she used to be with absolutely no consequences or opposition to of her behaviour. It's almost like it doesn't matter whether that communication happened or not, it doesn't matter to her because she would still do what she wants anyways. And this characteristics are quite prevalent in a lot of the character's choices and story-line. The only difference is they all go through different emotional consciousness, but in the end - it seems almost the same -- 'it doesn't matter'. Lmao

This is all quite confusing in terms of just how to evaluate her character (or any characters actually, on any deeper level) and in a story-logic makes no-sense. It's quite frustrating.

And it's this flip-floppy behaviour that isn't just exclusive to her either - but with a lot of the characters in this story in regards to their own feelings/actions they took as well. I think the emotional logistic in this story isn't all that kinked out and isn't meticulous enough. Not even in a 'this is alright' way - but in a 'this is a failing grade if I see it' way.

2nd point) This is the one story that actually requires emotional intensity. It's a deliberate stylistic choice to keep the irl portion light-hearted, perhaps to counteract the dogblooded-ness of the movies/series. While that's perfectly fine as a statement on its own, unfortunately it has other factors in the story that would require more emotional dealings and careful handlings about this topic. Although I came in thinking of this as a 'silly novel you shouldn't take seriously (just for enjoyment) ' - I realized you can't enjoy the story without wondering about the serious neglect on the author's part of the handling of the characters and their emotional plotline.

Outside of work, these characters lack the necessarily intensity + emotional development to go through what the plot is putting them through. Let me explain!

Say for example:

You have the ML's younger brother YYX -- who is also in love with the MC. While this is 'spicy!' at the beginning, it was never addressed as a serious issue. The relationship between YYX, Madan Yan, YQC was never clear about this infatuation he had with the MC. In fact, besides YQC knowing about it and keeping an eye on him, this issue of the younger brother liking MC was never seen as a serious emotional plot-point -- the way Madam Yan kept pushing YQC and MC together (disregarding/ignorant of YYX's affection) was never addressed. This is dogblood, let me spell it out. It has angst, logically this would be the emotional line to take. But because the author adamantly refuses to lend the story into deeper emotional territory, it was never addressed and this knife slice to YYX was never clarified.

You can't just brush it off? This is an entire plot point, that you can't just make it into a non-consequential 'filler' of the story that doesn't seem to affect the MC, ML, or any other characters in the story in any tangible sense. He exists in this universe, in this circle, and is an integral part of the relationship of every side-characters to this story. Yet? This was never addressed? It's quite distressing how badly emotional situations are handled in this story. Not just for YYX situation as a case, but for every single character -- MC and ML included.

It's?? It's really illogical, even if it's a stylistic choice to 'keep' things light-hearted and as a silly love story. The emotional logic line does not make any sense. Which can make alot of the characters come across as crude, callous and a bit clumsy. These are resulting from the choices made by the author in order to facilitate a happy and more light-hearted tone to the story. While I don't have to like it, I have to point out that it's more hurtful to the writing/brings it down, instead of helping it in anyway.

In conclusion, I like this story overall. It's still readable to me (but I can understand other's frustrations). An easy fix would be to actually allow the emotional line to flourish and wrangle/handle it back to what you want it to be, instead of denying the plausibility of emotional development at all. See no evil hear no evil doesn't work when it comes to writing. You have to address the different issues and logistic to make it make sense. Focusing on just the main 3 won't work. You have a cast of characters that are half made, but ignoring them/their issues isn't helping setting the background/scene. Forcing light-heartedness and 'happiness' will only make it feel somewhat fake/plastic/insulting. It's negligence, I think. So it's somewhat disappointing and a shame that some issues aren't addressed in time.

Still... it is what it is. And it's a 'light-hearted' 'silly' novel about a love story. If you enjoy it then you enjoy it, I'm like talking about the writing. I quite enjoy the first arc anyways, I hope you like the story of Li Xu too! <<less

The novel is pretty good in showing development of film or shooting which really helps keeping a timeline. The male lead is pretty clear in what he likes and what he dislikes. I didn't like the fact that the MC kept saying I am 1 and so I can't be such and such person. I am not a person with same sexuality so maybe that part was written right but I didn't understand it well. It got a bit boring and I had to drop it for some time but... more>> I picked it back up and completed it. <<less

Overall, this novel was very sweet, but also a bit long and draggy. I read all of the chapters up until Yan Yaoxuan’s extras because I got bored of the novel, and I wasn’t in the mood to read about a relationship full of red flags, as the translated put it. Speaking of the translator, the only reason why I gave this story 5 stars was because of them. Although I did see one review about the grammatical mistakes and such, I felt like the translator was doing their best... more>> plus those mistakes didn’t affect my reading enjoyability. I also appreciated the translator’s thoughts at the end of each chapter. Otherwise, I would have probably rated this novel 4 stars.

One thing of note in this story is the lack of obvious cliches, such as a villainous stepmom, and the lack numerous brain dead cannon fodder. While there was that one brain dead black powder, she was frankly so insignificant that I barely remember what she tried to do to the MC.

Anyway the novel was very good overall. <<less

So good omg, I even managed to MTL to the very end!!

It's a slow romance but very very sweet. The dramatic shift in the relationship is very realistic due to this. I also like the characters and particular shoutout to the "Bai Yuguang".

Spoiler

I don't like how many stories will easily villainize characters into cannon fodders. Here, BYG also hates MC at the start, but we see a lot of complexity in his character and he struggles a lot too. His relationship w MC is very interesting, very causal, as it says in the last few chapters.

[collapse]

I also like that they delve into topics like family estrangement through the lens of "movies" and the familial relationships.

Also, MC does get prettier due to external help of the system, and it's mentioned a lot, but it never feels like that's what makes him OP. As an actor, beauty is never everything, and later on it seems more like it dug a pit for him instead lol. Fortunately this isn't one of those stories where everyone loves him because of his flawless beauty etc etc.

The only thing I'm a lil upset about is shan cheng. I still think he's way too pushy, and idk I feel SC's partner deserves a lot more fluff. And ML's "competency" omg, as it's classic in Chinese fiction MC's always gotta hurt and want to avoid ML's prowess. I'm personally not a fan of this troupe, although this story is better than many at least. At one point I thought we were gonna get a queen bottom MC, but that kinda went nowhere....

In my dreams, I see ML bottom. lmao. <<less

This book has made me tear up so many times ?. Its also made me laugh. I've read the mtl and I can't wait for the whole book to be translated because parts of the mtl were confusing.

Its such an interesting take on transmigration and celebrities/acting. The MC gets really into the characters he portrays and their stories become substories of the actual book. I was really confused in the begining as to where this book was headed and who was the ML.

I really recommend this book if you enjoy... more>> acting and transmigration as tags! <<less

Not a perfect novel, but somehow I really liked this story...

It's a showbiz novel, with a romance and drama setting... And the most enjoyable thing is the fact that there's no annoying cannon fodder in this story. UH THIS IS REALLY MY FAVORITE GENRE. It's light, fluffy, and fun 🥺🥺

Our MC Shen Jintai may look very OP, she really shines everywhere, but seeing that before she transmigrated, she was really a hardworking actor, so I feel it's really natural... The only thing I regret is that the process of MC... more>> and ML getting together is a bit complicated, chapter 142, and to be honest I almost gave up because our MC is a bit annoying when he chases our Bai Shu, but be patient, because our ML Yan's patience is also amazing.... They got together late, but the next 50 chapters are full of dog food 😭🥰

But honestly really love the side pairing of this novel... Our cute Bai, and our sexy Gong Shi... Trust me their extra chapters are full of sweet drama...

And I really love all the storylines from the movie that Shin Jintai played. Honestly I cried so many times there, it was so painful, so deep, and so touching 😭😭

I trust this writer to deliver sweet and fun PDA stories...

And thanks to the translator for your hard work... 🫶🫶 Really, it's because of you that I was able to meet this story. <<less

I read the main story which is all about Shen Jintai’s rise to fame, basically a career story with a drizzle of love and magic.

I haven’t finished the side stories (extras) yet but supposedly they’re about Bai Qingquan (the original novels protagonist) ’s life after Shen Jintai’s transmigration and the end of that story.

Spoiler

yes, the main story is HE

[collapse]

Here are a few points I noticed and want to comment on:

  • There is no Dub-Con, the ML is very respectful and was raised with good values. (He does have skin hunger but enforces self-restraint and discipline on himself).
  • The protagonist life depends on whether he can split up the original novels main couple, while it’s not expanded on until later in the story it’s briefly mentioned in the beginning. In the initial novel this point is briefly ignored by the MC who seems to think he has it all figured out and as long as he seduces the protagonist shou of the original novel it’ll all be fine.
  • In the story there are the classic top and bottom roles, the possibility of being ‘verse’ isn’t even mentioned instead it’s portrayed as a ‘bottom turning into a top’ or ‘top turning into a bottom ’ no flexibility, and much of the last few ‘complications’ the MC has about getting together with the ML is exactly because he perceives himself as a top and doesn’t want to bottom.
    Spoiler

He does end up bottoming and actually mentions feeling embarrassed about thinking he was a top, even though multiple times in the novel he is specifically mentioned to have ‘alpha’ energy, it’s portrayed more as a haha ‘as if’, and even the system gaslights him into getting several beauty and sexy rewards that’ll make him a more popular actor while also turning him into the ideal stereotypical shou.

    [collapse]
  • MC does start from the very bottom but the former owner of the body used to be a highly popular traffic star before he retired (though that’s not necessarily a good thing since he had a lot of black material). But it does mean that that MC just by making a few changes have fans returning to the fandom in droves. Add in the beauty rewards and his talent for acting and he was set.
  • Both the original protagonist and the ML initially hates the MC, because of the things the former owner of the body did under the influence of the plot.
    Spoiler

But ML becomes this MC’s lover and protagonist becomes the MC’s best friend

    [collapse]
I enjoyed the first part of the novel that was more easygoing the most, it’s my own preference, the author does mention intending to write the whole story like that but her own style ended up taking over the later parts of the novel and it became slightly more serious and dramatic.

Also a fair warning to any readers, the author is a liar who doesn’t know what sweet means *deadpan expression*.

The authors own preferences shine through in the plots of the movies and shows the MC acts in, tons of drama, tears and tragedy.

Luckily she kept her word somewhat regarding the main story and it is ‘sweet’ (but it’s definitely not the easygoing happy-go-lucky plot you’d expect from a novel classified as ‘sweet’).

Translator did an amazing work MTLing this, it’s very well done. <<less

Came back to read this a second time and I still love it as much as the first time.

Overall, this is a very fluffy story. In terms of plot depth there is not a lot. It’s just MC following his dreams and realizing that he likes the ML, and ML realizing he likes the MC (now that OG MC’s soul is no longer there) with the typical drama you would expect from a show biz novel.
