the system turning into a black baby. It was just so random lmao. But gotta be honest it was uncomfortable to read. You can tell the author had goodwill by writing him into the story as everyone that mattered reacted positively and loved him but there were subtle things that are clearly ingrained in their culture. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was racist but more a product of ignorance of how much that portrayal could affect someone. It was definitely uncomfortable to sit through, reading the adults "pity" the black baby and the children want to be black like him and eventually going so far as blackface although you can tell no harm was meant. It was just verrry uncomfortable and does reveal underlying problems with how dark skin colors are treated in the author's culture. But it would make sense for the context of the story for these reactions to be present as it is ancient china where diversity was almost nonexistent. But at the end of the day, the story is comedy. So I'm not going to pick up my pitchfork at the author for it. It was just uncomfortable, not rage inducing. The story felt like its focus completely shifted to the system though and with that comes the complications of reactions due to exposure to the rest of the world. So it does feel constant and I was always a little anxious wondering if the author was going to step over the line one day. I'm all for diversity in these stories but yeah... It isn't handled perfectly.
