Great novel. The characters were interesting and distinct. Zuo Mo had great depth to him, a silliness and serious attitude to match his eternal greed. The arcs did not feel repetitive and it's relatively easy to steamroll hundreds of chapters at a time. The only problem is villains are propped up to be spectacular fights but the fights are rushed and sometimes overlooked. Supporting characters are forgotten at times, and the final arc was rushed. Could have been a perfect novel if the pacing was better.

I have some really mixed emotions about this novel. Of all the xuanhuan I've read, this one is one of the rare few that has a wide variety of characters, each with their own depths and characteristics. In fact I can easily pick out 5 of them to have their own novels, and at least 10 that can be pivotal characters of any book. The supporting cast often have reasonable breakthroughs, and have their own redeeming qualities, even to the point of overshadowing the MC. I don't think I have... more>> ever read any xuanhuan with such detailed and interesting pool of characters before (MC and villains included). The interaction between characters, the crowd reaction, the schemes between factions are beautifully written, there are no dumb crowds sneering at MC.

World building is... acceptable, as the author tried to squeeze too many factions, each with their own back grounds, ambitions, beliefs and so on, while also keeping them through out the book, not all of them managed to receive appropriate attention and screen time. This novel could learn much from Emperor's Domination in this area.

The MC himself is quite interesting, known to be a rascal with a subtle hint of heart of gold (or jingshi). But not in the ways of Meng Hao or Zhou Wenqing, but in a more brutish way. The traditional mysterious ghost grampas or lolis are overturned, which is quite fresh and fun to read. The greatest flaw regarding the writing of the MC is that the build-up mysteries regarding his background were not properly explained. What supposed to be a tear jerking tragedy had no substance at all.

As for cultivation, oh god cultivation. Anything cultivation or fantasy related in this novel is absolutely horrid. At first it wasn't so bad, but the deeper the story goes the more s*upid it gets. First off, stages. The higher the level, the less stages are properly explained. In fact, there were even times MC jumps multiple large stages with the dumbest explanations. There were some lines about world comprehension, and that's basically it. MC almost always level up while raging and not in control of his body. Second, the whole cultivation system in general. Oh god this is so s*upid, there were so many build-ups, so much foreshadowing, so much expectations, and boom, the author throw it all away, dig up some bullsh*t from who knows where, and boom instant god mode. Third, auxiliary skills like forging and dan making, beast raising, formations and what not. Aside from forging, the rest are like ghosts, they come and go as they please, and extremely annoying. However I do have to say, compare to jack of all trades like Ancient Strengthening techniques, the drive and development of multiple skills (in the early half of the novel) is much more reasonable. Basically the MC doesn't have a choice and must learn those skills if he wants to survive, which was acceptable. And last but not least, the concept of new energy, which can only be described in two words: completely s*upid. How other factions and characters cultivate this energy in comparison with the MC makes zero sense, the use of this energy in the grand scheme of things should have made sense if not for the 3 points above dragging it down into a puddle of manure. The greatest impact of all the points mentioned in this paragraph is how much they influence the general balance of the world. Since cultivation levels are unclear, army strength cannot be accurately described, other than a convenient plot device. Strategies, political schemes, grade of treasures, even mysteries of ancient times are greatly affected.

This novel can be described as a weapon made up of the best materials, but have fallen short of what it could have been. An attempt of a master forger to reach grand master level but failed at the last critical step. Of the words "world of cultivation", only "world" was achieved. This would've been a peerless masterpiece, if it were not a xuanhuan.

At the beginning, I loved this novel so so much, I have almost never read a xuanhuan with such interesting characters, situations, mysteries. The empire building was fantastic, the schemes were deviously delicious, the love and care of elders for the younger generation was moving. But around chapter 800, when I went to bed at night, I couldn't sleep because I was too furious thinking about the developments and various loopholes. The novel was falling apart. I see many people compare this to I shall seal the heavens, saying this is slightly better, and I agreed with it too, at least at first. Cultivation aside, the main difference between the two, is that the characters in ISSTH know their place. There are only so many importance side characters, factions, eras, and mysteries, but almost all of them are excavated with care, while there are too many things going on in WoC. And as the chapters stack up, this became a defining feature of WoC: a hot pot of unprocessed high quality materials which caused indigestion and food poisoning.

A true pity <<less

If you enjoy xuanhuan cultivation novels but are tired of all the stereotypical and cliche plot lines then this novel is the best thing you can read. Honestly, the amount of characters is staggering but 120 chapters from the end and the story is just absolutely wonderful.

The World of Cultivation is an excellent chinese novel.

First there is the world itself, well written, coherent, with well established three races, equally good factions inside these races and, above that, the description of the power relationships between all of them. Beyond that, this world is not static, quite the contrary, it is in a period of great fluctuations in the time of the novel, with a logic of action/reaction underlying them, which makes this chinese fantasy world seem all the more "realistic" in its progress in the novel. Plus,... more>> the cultivation systems in the story, while being not as detailed as in many other novel, are coherent, and in the unconventional and innovative part of the power progression of the characters, feels both as cultivation and "real world research and development".

Then you got the characters, nearly all of them are given a distinct personnality, as well as good sides, bad sides and quirks. True, except for the core cast (which is still made of 15 to 30 characters) they are not given a detailed backstory, but are fleshed out enough that you can understand them and their evolution in regard to the context of the story. Moreover, no character is written in a absolute good and evil perspective, everyone exist in shades of gray, from the MC to the main antagonist (you just can't use the term "villain" with Lin Qian, till the end, I could only see him as "the other side's hero"). The main cast benefits from one of the being character writting I ever saw, some of them on par with what I read in Er Gen's novels. Whether it is the determined, talented, adaptative but greedy and unconventional main character Zuo Mo, his elder sect brother Wei Sheng (who clearly is more the image of the classic Xianxia hero), the devoted, self-sacrificing A Gui, the cunning, sadistic, fair faced Gongsun Cha, the stoic Zong Ru... ok, I'll stop here, you understand how good the characters are.

Both world and characters are combine in a plot that answer well to the title of the novel. This is not really the story of a hero, or of a hero and his companions, but truly the tale of a time or great upheaval and evolution in the titular World of Cultivation, saw in great part thorough the eyes of a person who becomes its top mover and shaker, but also through the perspective of numerous characters, on all sides of the many fences, with all of their points of view are well-grounded in their respective psychology. Not only that, but the author plays with and wonderfully combines the various levels of perceptions in the novel (individual, collective, strategic, military, industrial, "scientific", empire building...), each of them good to very good in its own right, but whose combinaison produces a wonderful elixir of reading felicity. Finally, while the hero and his companions experience their share of "lucky chance", their successes are nearly always, not the product of a "deus ex machina", but the result of care, foresight, unconventionnal thinking and lots of diligent training and preparations.

Still, the novel is not without its flaws. First is the quality of the translation, for although it's great, it suffers from quite a few typos, spelling mistakes and grammar errors, at least 1 to 3 per chapter, and while they're not making the novel hard to understand, the reading turns a bit rough. Second is the ending, which, while being appropriate and well done, is still a bit too sudden and abrupt, although the feeling of early chapters' nostalgia it gave was very nice.

In conclusion, World of Cultivation is a must read. Great world building, amazing character writing and storytelling fuse into such an epic tale of chinese fantasy, that you'll easyly forget about the bumps in the translation and the abrupt ending, in order to dive into this "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" of the Xianxia genre.

Rated 5 stars (rounded up from 4, 5 stars because of the translation quality).

P.S: thanks to Wyhcwe, WanderingGummiOfDoom and Brian for translating this amazing novel. <<less

Fun read. Except the confusing sources of power. Too much of everything is confusing.

Overall: A very nice read. Transition is very pleasing. Easily digestible scenes. Comedy is full. Character development is great, watching as the MC changes is good.

Some elements are hard to take in. In the long run. Exposing yourself to too many master teachers is a bad dose, luckily MC could cope with that and miraculously overcome the mix of everything in his cultivation.

If you can endure some confusing powers and sources. Besides that, as a whole this... more>> novel is great. <<less

I have to say.. this started out nice.. however this is a story about a monster is made.. I wanted to read a nice farming story.. and I just finished off a chapter where he mass mu*ders women. Then a completely unrelated women scorns him and he mu*ders her to shut her up.. he treat human lives like grass to be stepped on.. im already sick of it.. MC becomes a pretty sick and twisted individual.

He even kills off his allies if they get afraid.. there was a chapter a... more>> little ways back where the MC and a group of strangers fight an enemy., One man. They win then they head in the same direction.. when suddenly 20 men who move with killing intent shows up.. the stranger dont know there allies and turn to run. MC kills them because they did not want to lay down there life for him... im like wtf is this.. who does he think he is at this point they dont even know him. They already helped him and he repays them with backstabbing.

MC really just a monster. If the story gives him more allies there no way I can see it working. He a mu*dering savage.. who would actually trust him.. im sure the author will give even more plot armor but im honestly sick of it. <<less

Only a few chapters left to read so while I'm waiting for the translation, here is my review.

What a fantastic novel, very few LN can compare to it. A lot of strong points and very few weakness present.

1. The world is well thought and interesting. Different races, cultivation methods and jobs. We have glimpses from the higher tier of class to the lowest. What motivates the big sect and how live the weak cultivators are things you will know.

2. The story is great. It's slow at first but it gets... more>> faster and faster until even those who like a lot of action will be satisfied. Little conflicts will never turn into something big. The MC won't meet arrogant young masters who will annoy him because they want his table, weapon, pet, clothes or what not just because they are from a powerful sect and he seems weak. Jerks still exist but they aren't at every turn and won't cause too much damage. The MC's ennemies aren't evil, they just have different (or same) interests as him. The actions people make are rational for their goal. A big sect won't throw every thing for revenge, if the situation isn't good they will think of other methods.

3. The MC is great. He is weak at first so he just want to survive. Making money is important to him. He will evolve but he will always be greedy. His talent isn't great because his sect is focused on something he isn't very good at. He will build his own way to become powerful.

4. The MC's companions. In every other story the MC is so talented his friends are left behind when he powers up. The authors response are abandoning those characters, have them much more powerful than the MC to start with or give them a cheat item that power them up greatly. In this story the side kicks are also talented and grow with the MC. Without them the MC wouldn't accomplish a hundredth of what he does.

5. The wars are so well thought. In other novels only powerful experts counts. So what if you have 5 times more people than me? I'm level 3 and you 2 so I win. It isn't like that here. When real battles begin a powerful expert is powerless against a well trained battalion. Tactics in battle is important so you might be more powerful than your ennemy but lose because he is smarter.

The only thing I find lacking is the doubt about the power level of characters sometimes. There are cultivation stages but we don't know where they are at. It isn't always but still a lot for me.

If you aren't afraid of a slow pace at first, you definitely have to give this novel a try.

Edit: I just finished reading the last chapter and while I still think the story is great I am a little disappointed by the ending. It lacks drama, it would have been better to add a few chapters and go into more details. The way it all plays out is not a problem, I actually like it, it just feels rushed. <<less

I don't write many reviews but am always judging stuffed based on 1 star reviews, so this is here really to let you know why this is a series that is worth giving a shot.

World of cultivation will likely be unlike any of the traditional one MC against the world surrounded by women wuxia type novel you will ever read. Its also not really like anything else except the authors other works (if you like this your guaranteed to like Undefeated God of War).

The story follows Zuo Mo as a... more>> farmer with a mysterious past with foreshadowing all up in his business, to begin with its mainly allll about the money. He is greedy and knows no shame, through a series of unlikely events he gets a spirit grampa and enters a sect and begins his life as a cultivator.

He slowly rises in importance and as the world becomes embroiled in a war between humankind and the Yaomo he develops his own faction and rises in power.

The reason this is unlike what you have read before is because it does not just focus on one character the side characters are important sometimes throughout and old favourites crop up later in the story. You often get to hear how people are getting on. It is also interesting in that he doesnt just go out to fight alone but more and more the battles become larger in scale. This ramps up and keeps it interesting, with power mostly rising gradually and not the whole " I brokethrough 10 realms to beat this guy and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" which comes out of nowhere.
The characters are awesome and the main lead manages to be similtanaeously really dense and really clever, giving us plenty of comedy. He also never really loses the bandit mentality and has no problem with doing anything to win. I really loved this novel so far normally I save stuff up for a month and binge read it but this is one of the few I have to read every day. <<less

As any other novel, at the begining it starts promising but the it becomes lame.

First he starts as a gardener, cultivating the power of the elements for growing things. So for about 40 chapters we see the MC developing his elements powers and growing crops - extremly boring but you bear with it thinking something will happen. Expecially since the authour mentions some traveleing cultivators that focua on the element - but that's just a mention, sadly the MC doesnt go adventuring around and exploring the world.

Then he gets it... more>> touch with a supernatural being that is teaching him an enormous amount of things - yeah, basically the author is discribing the tehniques and rambling useless and time consuming crap about everything, from making formations to making pills and so on.

It's just like those chapters in a mainstream chinese novel where the MC is being tested in sociology, art of war and medicine making. The author is usually focusing on medicine making inventing all kind of plants and pills and medicines, since it's easier to invent something like that, and the other more complex subjects are going by like a summary. Only that in here we are talking about a hundred of such lame chapters.

A lot of time passes between the MC is in a fight, and when it does it is lame. Sometime he even fights succesive battles to conpensate for thw lack of action in the past chapters. <<less

I ended up reading its entirety and enjoying heavily the direction and care the author took for most of the book; however, it is quite a pity that it ended up with a latter third and ending of a story that was just as disappointing as Coiling Dragon.

I would almost rate this a 3 for the poor ending and attention to detail, but considering this as a whole, I'd give it a 3.5 if the UI would let me. I gave it a 4 in respect to what it could have been.

This is best summed up after the ending where the author claims that he was disatisfied with the final book (aka last third of the series), how he left too many plot holes, and that he sucks at writing cultivation...

Though I'm glad that it was a positive learning experience for him, and a mostly enjoyable read for me, it is still a shame how the story changed and how so much potential ended up to naught.

The characters stopped being fleshed out while the author kept on adding more to the scope of the series. This resulted in characters, even those that are considered to be main characters, end up being cardboard cutouts to be mentioned and ignored, whilst many interactions are added and never continued upon. The ending was rushed to the point where the author just wrote, 'book ends'.

The synopsis looked interesting, and it started with a story that followed the idea fairly well.

A shame that after the introduction of the pill making and a few discoveries about plants, spells and pills, it starts to transform into a very generic-looking xianxia novel.

You have the expert hidden inside him that can provide him with basically any technique and even protect him from harm, at a very low cost (only "money" to teach techniques and even upgrade them to higher tiers, and a fairly low amount, all things considered).

Near chapter... more>> 70, things start to go all over the place, showing off how OP the hidden expert is and how his knowledge is significantly higher than anyone around the main character at the time.

It could get better again later on, but frankly it feels like the whole farming is a facade just to make the character even more powerful. Pill making is shown to be something he will be the world's best from the very first time he makes pills, he is able to alter the sword moves and see through it after a few months of practice...

It might be just because of too high expectations from me, but I thought it would at least try to not go the usual ways, so I am a bit sad to see that it quickly develops like any other of this genre.

At least, novels like stellar transformation tried to stick to the construct of the odd cultivation thing, rather than saying "you are no genius" while making him advance even faster and farther than the hard working geniuses, in their own strong points.

That said, while it feels like a very generic xianxia, it's not a bad one either, the writing is decent, the translation seems to be fairly good too.
So if you just want this style of novels, there are definitely worse ones out there.

The only thing is that the whole "he really wants to farm, but others force him to cultivate every time he goes back to his farming" doesn't seem to actually be a big part of it (at least in the first 80 chapters). <<less

World of Cultivation is one of those, it's a slow novel so it's good novel". While it has some interesting things, like the lost memory, its again full of cliche things.

There still is an annoying guy in his head whom I wanted to see dead and there is also an arrogant guy who wants to cripple our MC in a tournament. The MC is anything but unique. He's in need of money like 1000 other characters. The interaction with our MC and side characters are so overly annoying polite I... more>> want to vomit. Just because it's slow it isn't any better. But it still has less of those cliche young masters who want to cripple the, because I don't know his left eye greater is than his right. I’m unsure at this point @ chapter 68, but so far I like the character of Zuo Mo. He’s absolutely unyielding even in the face of death. He does fear death, but he won’t relent. He’s like weed as others have mentioned; Money on his mind all day long. I love his character. He has honor and is not just a money grubber. He does have some sense of “uprightness”. He speaks tr*sh well and I love him for it. The last thing I have to say is that the... more>> MC is smart and cunning. As for the side characters, I’ll look at them more in a few dozen chapters. <<less

Giving it a 4 star review. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story (finished reading all chapters using machine translator). The MC definitely has his unique points, and I enjoyed how the supporting characters grew alongside him. In other Xianxia novels, the side characters are usually pale, anemic ghosts; they either serve as comedic relief, or as a backdrop with which you can get more glimpses into the MC's personal life, or as a prop to move the plot along (yes, I'm looking at you, MC's love interest). Having... more>> characters with better fleshed personalities which can accomplish tasks separate from the MC is a plus.

The reason I'm giving it a 4 (and I'm nitpicking here) are consistency / coherency issues that pop out once in a while.
Spoiler

Novel initially seems poised to have the MC specialize in 5 elemental lines of force, which basically gets thrown out after a while. Actually, the MC goes through several force systems which basically loses significance / get swapped out as the story goes along, instead of a consistent gradual build up.

Another inconsistency for me is the mist tribe's restricted area, but that might be too spoilerish...

There will be spoilers.
Spoiler

I'll summarize in a few words here at the beginning: generic wuxia with superior quality.

The MC is presented as a person with no talent who must cultivate little by little.

The power system is developing well, and, suddenly, the entire rhythm is broken.

The story's developments start to get ridiculous after the protagonist is abandoned by the sect.

He wants to escape from that Jie who was being attacked by YaoMo and is blocked and requires payments to pass. At this point in the story, the protagonist, instead of thinking of thousands of ways to just pay off some of the lingshi, decides to set up a f*cking city and an army to kill the sect that had a cultivator infinitely stronger than him.

The tropes of this story develop ridiculously and for s*upid reasons.

When the protagonist kills the boss of this Jie, he flees across the river with this new army and arrives at another Jie.

The first thing he does is start another war with a sect because of this army that were former s*aves of that sect.

He destroys the sect again and uses a teleportation formation. Someone interferes with the formation and he enters an ancient battlefield with this army.

These are the best chapters of the book, he spends it cultivating his yao arts and the story doesn't turn around because of s*upid things.

As the story progresses, he flees the battlefield and receives an incomparable item of ancient inheritance.

He manages to escape this camp to hunt for an item to cure his wife. He arrives at another infinitely stronger Jie and the first thing he does is destroy another sect for s*upid reasons.

He establishes Turtle Island and stays for a while. He goes to look for the item to cure his wife and suddenly a calamity begins that restarts the war of yaomo vs xiuzhe.

This continues until the end. The cultivation system is completely scrapped.

The protagonist spends hundreds of chapters without advancing and suddenly jumps to the yuanying level (jumps 2 levels at once).

The yaos arts are scrapped and the xiu arts are scrapped after he realizes the miraculous Shen power.

This leaves a taste of sh*t in the mouth of whoever reads it. The protagonist never finishes exploring anything.

The only thing that exists are the thousands of battles between armies of secondary characters.

The story unfolded from that s*upid decision to set up an army and then it became a bit forced

Totally rushed and meaningless.

If you read this like 10 chapters a day, the pace should be pleasant. But beyond that, it's terrible.

This is a common evil of the Wuxia genre. Thousands of useless things are presented to get in the way of the objective. It wouldn't be bad if it happened once or twice, but it happens all the time.

Wuxia is an inferior reading genre in itself, even though this novel has the seinen subgenre, its quality suffered.

It's well written, I'm not going to lie, but the potential would be greater with 200 more chapters of cultivation and some downtime/development (As happened at the beginning of the story).

Furthermore, you will never have a feeling of dominance. Regardless of how much power the protagonist obtains, all transformations and inheritances, he never exercises dominance. He is always chased like an abused dog because the moment he makes an advance the author creates a higher level character to chase him.

2.5/5. After the first 200 chapters this becomes generic wuxia.

It doesn't deserve this 4.3 rating, it's on the same level as stellars transformations.

There are several other better novels.

This novel is interesting but not what I’m currently looking for so I dropped it pretty early. The main premise of the novel seems to be leveling up? It’s a coming of age kind of novel. The MC is an outer sect disciple who wants to be a spiritual farmer to make money. He works hard towards this goal and doesn’t care about much else. At least, outside of his missing memories and mysterious past.
