The frozen capital of Norway, Oslo. Silye, an asian who have been discriminated and bullied just because of her race, decides to escape this frozen hell by jumping off the school building but is saved by being caught by the ‘Emperor’ of the school. Read this on webnovel. I enjoyed this novel a LOT, but there are some very problematic topics that are touched on. The story has two main portions, FL's life in Norway and her life in New York. If you have read 'The Youthful You Who Was So Beautiful', I would describe the love and relationship between the main characters as pure and unadulterated. They respect each other fully. However, in this novel, I would describe their relationship as raw and wrenching, not to forget twisted as sh*t. The love is... more>> definitely there no doubt, but the way the characters go about it and the circumstances they have to go through together and alone really impact their relationship (ML is obsessed with FL).

Spoiler

The ML is very twisted and the FL is quite twisted as well. Their relationship is really toxic, but something about it is so captivating and I could not stop reading. However!! He does r*pe her!! Their relationship is very twisted, and he basically forces her/coerces her into having s3x, and because of her pride, she actively engages in it. For a few chapters, they meet up like 3 different nights, which FL agreed to because ML said he would stop bothering her (at this point, she does not want to see him ever again), so I would consider this coercion.

[collapse]

The rest of my review will contain spoilers and a general summary of the two parts

So life in Norway (first half of the novel) : she gets bullied at school (because she is Asian), many physical altercations, classmates literally hate her. FL has pride, and her way of being strong against her bullies is to not report them. I have been in a similar situation so I literally know how she feels, and I reacted basically the same way. She doesn't make things difficult for her adopted family, so she deals with the fights and having people throw objects at her. The school is unsympathetic, and her adopted parents don't believe that she is the target of racism. ML relationship happens, they are both mentally unstable, very toxic relationship imo. But it is twisted in a way that is soo captivating. (Not saying that things he did during this time are okay at all.)

Spoiler

Major spoilers! She gets pregnant with his child, his stepmother kidnaps her and aborts it. FL leaves ML for a good chunk of time without telling him what happens. Her adoptive parents force her to move to New York because she got pregnant and it's shameful.

[collapse]

Life in New York:

Spoiler

At first, FL is mindless and does whatever her Aunt tells her to do, but she becomes a model. FL becomes successful and we see how ML is doing. They meet up, ML wants to break her because she left him, he forces her to have s3x with him and she decides to play along so he will leave her alone and go back to Norway. Through their separation, she tries to forget him, and when he comes back and they "spend time" (have s3x), she admits to herself that she really does love him. Honestly, I have really mixed feelings about this part. He r*pes her, and I don't want to justify it by saying that he is very obviously mentally ill. It's not okay. But then, they end up in a relationship... There's another major incident but I won't spoil that or the ending.

[collapse]

Few lines from the novel that sums up their relationship:

"He loved her so much... Kail was tempted to imprison and possess her against her will, but seeing her in pain would be the death of him. He couldn’t stand her unhappiness, and that was why he was freeing Silje.

If he loved her just a little less... Perhaps he would’ve killed her and kept her body with him forever."

I binged this in a few hours, and I don't regret it. If you do decide to read it, read with an open mind and know that their relationship will not be normal. <<less

This is a very emotional, frustrating, and relatively fast-paced novel. When I read the synopsis, I was expecting to read the usual high school romance where the school king falls in love with the innocent and bullied-for-no-reason MC. It both exceeded and fell short of my expectations. It was nothing like what I thought it would be. It was sad, it was cruel, it was frustrating, and by no means a fluffy nor sweet romance story.

I have very complicated feelings for both the main characters and the plot itself. The... more>> emotions the main characters feel really get through the reader, it even felt suffocating at times. It's sometimes relatable, sometimes perplexing, and extremely uncomfortable. I had a very hard time comprehending the logic of the MC, and the justifications for her actions, but later on I recognized her struggles though still not very approving of the things she had done. She is a fighter for sure, the lack of affection she has when she is in love and her desire to forget everything and go on with her life is very realistic and makes the story more empathetic, but it is still very disappointing for a romance novel.

The ML is literally what kept the whole story going, if not for him the whole thing would be impossible. Yes, he is very twisted. What he had done to the MC has no justifications even after all that had happened, but he kind of makes up for his actions with his sincerity and insistence. I like reading sweet romance novels with lots of affection, but I also like reading sad stories with darker elements and sacrifices, that's what makes the whole thing worthwhile after all. This is something in-between, and what I had the hardest time bearing with was the instability of the MC. She is very insincere in their relationship and also very fickle. I know she went through a lot and has lots of scars and all, but what I expect from a love story is simply devotion and she has none of that. Though I still hate him for his cruelty and inconsiderateness, I admit that if it weren't for the ML, the MC would keep denying herself and live her life stuck in the same circle.

The best part about the story is definitely the music. The author sure knows how to use the most suitable songs in the story and I enjoyed listening to them as I kept reading, a lot. Especially the key song of the story, Solveig's Song, suits the emotions and the struggles the couple goes through so much that I can't help but remember them every time I hear the melody. It's really beautiful.

I wouldn't consider the ending of the story a happy one, because it didn't satisfy me in the least. But it is realistic and expressive, and if that's what you expect from the story I think it would suit your tastes. <<less

Normally I will just read and totally ignore the part of writing a review but the ending is so satisfying that I want to voice it out. I dont know why it has such a low rate but tbh thats the best ending possible not a rush one. He and she are like werewoves they are soulmates. The only thing I dont like is that the author keeps reminding us how strong her mind is but I only see it towards the ML (as if to use it as a... more>> means to attract him). To others she is a coward. She cant even put up any action against the one who kills her child. I also hate the way she behaves to the bullies... She kinda unescessarily provokes them.. <<less

Damn, what are people thinking? Sure, their relationship makes half of Ted Bundy's crimes look like a joke (okay, maybe that's pushing it) but it definitely does NOT deserve such a low rating. However crappy everything may seem, it is, in the end, a pretty well written story (?) I think.

Let me finish it first.
