Albarino was a forensic pathologist at Westland Forensic Bureau. He was single, witty, and would go out for a drink with his colleagues – just like any other forensic pathologist.

Except for one thing: he was secretly a psycho serial killer.

For the longest time, Albarino had a normal 3-point-1-line life* from home – Forensic Bureau – crime scene (his own or someone else’s), until one day, another psycho serial killer unintentionally killed his target he had planned to kill for 3 months.

With all his meticulous planning ruined, he was pissed off, so he decided to provoke the other serial killer himself.

*a boring, monotone, unchanging life.

This book is the best book ever. Period!

And the fact that it is being translated makes me feel so happy that I feel like I'm flying.

Honestly, this is the kind of book that will make you feel like 95% of the books you have read till date are shit, rubbish, tr*sh, and the like.

... more>> And this story is obviously about serial killers, so if you are uncomfortable with that setting, simply don't read it.

Everything about this book is perfect. It is so good that I don't think I can find the right words to explain how awesome it is. Yeah, it's basically that good.

Edit:

I finally came up with a review after much thinking:

The best thing about this book is that the author hasn't tried to make this book fit into the "BL genre". I don't know if you understood this. Indeed, Wine and Gun is about two guys who get into a relationship. But the main thing is that the author doesn't insert the "BL" elements. It's never about two males falling in love. It's about two serial killers who happen to be males and happen to fall for each other. So this novel is purely a "creative work". It isn't similar to many (well most) BL books out there where the story is all about author's fetishes about two guys together. I would go as far as to say that this book isn't even about homosexuality, let alone BL (there is a huge difference between books in BL genre and books purely about homos*xual couples). It is, as I have said and I'll mention it again, purely a creative work. So, this novel feels like a "book" in a real sense. You know the kind of English classic books or any classic books in other languages that we have read where the author is like a mere observer of the things happening. I don't know if you guys have noticed but many authors address themselves as a "God" when it comes to "interacting" with their characters. I have no problem about that. But the author of this book treats herself as a passive observer. She says things like "XXX character will probably do this in this particular situation" and not "XXX character will definitely do this in this particular situation" in the author's note section when explaining something further. So what is the difference between an author who takes herself as a god/creator and an author who thinks of herself as an observer? Of course the latter one doesn't intervene in the story while the former one normally makes the story about herself, and not the characters or the plot. So the point is, the book purely tells a story about the two serial killers, Albarino and Herstal, and their life. You see, it's never about who's the top and who's the bottom (cuz I'm from the LGBT community and believe me, that talk about top and bottom is disgusting as f*ck), or about who's more feminine or masculine, who has awesome cooking skills, or which character will get face-slapped next, who's more rich, who has fair skin, who has long legs, who is yandere/ tsundere/ kuudere. Did you get the picture? This book isn't written to satisfy the fantasies of little fujoshis. Yeah, I could have said that at the beginning. It seriously explains everything. <<less

Hello, translator here! The following is my very biased, sort of incoherent review:

The author is very good at describing crime and how the serial killers in this novel work with their twisted morality and psychology. There's more depth to it than just "serial killers killing people"; characters are multidimensional. The relationship between the two main characters (both are serial killers) is also well-written and unique; their relationship develops throughout the whole novel.

spoilers for the whole novel here:

It's super interesting to see how the Sunday Gardener (Albarino), a serial killer "who could stop anytime", in comparison with the Westland Pianist (Herstal), a serial killer haunted by PTSD. Albarino had only viewed Herstal as his own "muse" while they were having a sort of FWB/killing together relationship, and Herstal was basically dragged along onto Albraino's madness. But that slowly changed over the curse of the story, with Albarino giving the gun his father used to commit su*cide to Herstal, and Herstal basically fake killing Albarino so he wouldn't get dragged into prison along with him. It's so satisfying to see their relationship grow into something into traditional romance, when that was previously one of the disagreements that caused them to "break up".

There's also the fact that they basically risked their lives to save Hardy's child, the police officer in charge of the serial killer's case, which isn't what you'd expect for the two serial killers in question. They're not just people who'd kill, they'll help out others if it doesn't get in the way, although both of their motives are questionable.

And the best part? There's no redemption arc. There's no "they gave up on killing and happily ever after. They went off together as mu*der husbands and will remain mu*der husbands, until one of them loses interest in the other one day....

Also, what I find similarly interesting is the contrast between the side characters, Olga and Mercader, both criminal profilers. While the former basically gives no f*cks about justice (she cares more about looking at serial killers' psychology instead), Mercader instead aims to eliminate all serial killers through extreme means, like forging evidence. It's on the complete opposite scale, whether it is good to use justice to the extreme or just do the opposite; it's up for the reader to decide which side of the scale they prefer.

One of my absolute personal favourites. You will feel like that there are no novels that will give you a similar experience with this one. A must read if you like serial killers, people with different moral spectrum, and don't mind the TWs.

TLDR I highly, highly recommend this novel!!! <<less

I haven't finished it because I was afraid it was coming to an end. This story is pure madness. The storyline, intertwined with various Bible and literacy references, delivers a beautiful and crazy love between our two main characters Al and Herstal. These two really suit each other. I cheer for their love. I mean it's a very intense and tough love... as it should be. What else do ya expect from two serial killers anyway?

Please don't let me meet ppl like them in real life.

Anyway, I enjoy this... more>> very much. The cases are very refreshing and creative, not to mention the tension between them.

Their rivalry makes everything about this novel better. Oh, how I wish I could experience that kind of intense s*xual tension they have.

Jokes aside, these two are really scary if you think about it. They are a match made in heaven and I hope Al would not disappoint Herstal's love and they live happily ever after without any more killings tho I doubt that.

This is a great ride and I assure you will also enjoy this if you are into unusual, intense, exciting, and deadly love stories.

I will come back and review it again when I finish it. <<less

Only bad thing about this book is that after you finish it a void will be left in your heart and no other novels will compare...I'm not even joking everything, is so well planned out and researched and explained in this novel (Especially all the Greek Mythology references). I've been stuck at chapter 85 for a while now, simply because sh*t IS SO INTENSE it's actually stressing me out (shows you just how well the characters are fleshed out!... never thought that one day I would be rooting for serial... more>> killers but hey). I can't even begin to explain the amount of times this novel had me giggling and kicking my feet up in the air but also me being so stressed out about what's going to happen to the characters that I have to exit out and take a breather or skim the chapter to make sure they are all right... This book isn't afraid to explore dark and depraved topics, one of which actually had me crying because it disturbed me that much (It was the topic of

by the way)

If this novel has 100 fans I'm one of them. If it has 1 fan, that's me. If this novel has no fans, I'm dead. I don't trust anyone who gave it less than 4.5 stars sorry. Also MC and ML are a lot older, I think they are in their 30's and 40's which is an excellent diversion from the usual 17-25 year olds in most novels. Yes, this novel is THAT GOOD, go read it and stop reading this! <<less

I want to thank the author for presenting this marvellous, amazing, stunning and 'breathtaking' story and kudos for GRain who picked up this gem and did a very great translation. Gosh.. Wow.. I'm so f****ng satisfied with this story, It sated me like never before. Haven't found and read such an extraordinary novel for a very long time. It aroused me to the point of wanting to keep reading until I can't take it no more but naaah i dont even want this story to end. This isn't your normal type of thriller ; well at least for me. We know the mu*derer, both are white collar psycopath, one who kills because of his 'boredness' while the other driven by his dark past. There's no guessing who did this and that, this is a story focusing solemnly on how the mu*derers did their job, the feels, the excitement while handling their victims. I've to admit that our author really did a great job of describing and expressing our main characters ' feeling ' which is so raw, so real, so vivid in every hunting and mu*ders.

If you come for the 'romance' tag, i'd have you know that this isn't your cuppa unless; of course you got a beautiful mind, one who'd appreciate art because this story is an art... more>> itself. Of course there're lusts, vivid s*x scene but that's that. It's not your typical 'cuddles-necking-romance' nor a BD*M kinda plays, it's pure lusts driven by madness in a pools of blood.

Wine and guns does gives me a goosebumps; not only because of the bloody scene of mu*ders or how our main characters choose to present their 'works of mu*ders' for outsider to see but also the amazing and astounding way of 'love' being potrayed and ilustrated in such raw and painful way. <<less

Ahem.

Let me begin by saying that this novel is such a refreshing breeze in my reading list. The cover is eye-catching, and so is the title! How can you not be enticed with a c-novel titled Wine and Gun? And look at the tags: Crime! Antihero protagonist!! Serial killers!!!

Just how much passionate do you want this novel to be? Very.

It's pretty much romanticising (nah, not really!) serial killers, except (so far) there's no romance yet. Just passion. The passion of a serial killer. My goodness! The tension, banters,... more>> and references- *ugly crying from something beautiful*

Anyways.

This is the novel you're looking for if you want danmei set in modern times (around 2016?), set in a fictional city full of gangs and crimes, sleep-deprived cops, a crazy pseud0-profiler, a charming handsome bastard and a neat blondie who's labelled as a bastard.

Oh, and! Dr. Wine is in his late twenties, while Mr. Gun is around 35 years old. Ducking awesome. Manly. Charming. Effing rich. What else? Their appearance matched their age. You know, silver foxes. YUM

On that note, give this a try! Author's writing style will make you feel as if you're watching crime romance drama instead of reading danmei online.

*I'm sorry, this is more about me gushing about Al and Herstal than a review >< <<less

Well, this is the first time I choose to leave a comment. I've read many, many novels, but I never find the words to leave a comment here, but I needed to make an exception for this novel and here I am.

To begin with, this isn't "my type" of novel (or it wasn't hehe) I don't really like gore, what piqued my interest in it was the tag "couple reversible", and thanks to Xie Lian, something about it caught my attention.

"Wine and Gun" was simply one of the most fascinating... more>> stories I've ever read, it's brilliant and fantastic, it involves you in such a way that you can't stop reading.

I asked myself, "what will the romance between a sociopath and a psychopath be like?" and in that story it is completely immersive, crazy and dark. And they were made for each other.

There's a line in the novel that says: "... it was the essence of their relationship. " – that vital cruelty, that insolent madness." and it really describes them and their relationship very well.

The author is magnificent, the way he created and developed the plot is admirable.

Anyway, like I said, I'm not good at commenting on something I've read, so I'll stop here, just one more thing, out of all the novels I've read, "Wine and Gun" is in my top 3.

(sorry for my english ^^) <<less

Review from my rec list:

5/5 for a Hannibal-esque story of two serial killers' rivalry, complex side characters, mutual attack, and off the charts s*xual tension. One of those danmeis where you know the author can actually write.

Solid gold for lines like this:

“Why can’t I connect to your house’s Bluetooth?” Herstal yelled from the study. His tense voice was the closest thing to exasperation at this sort of moment.

“Are you kidding me?” Albarino yelled back very weakly. He felt that his abdomen didn’t seem to be bleeding anymore, which was a good sign. “You use the victim’s computer and printer to print the victim’s private parts, and then you ask the victim himself why you can’t connect to Bluetooth?!”

AAAAAAAAAAAAAH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

I love this book. It's a real shame that so little people know about it. The premise actually reminded me about Hannibal but Albarino and Hestal are very different from those two. The book has a couple funny moments but majority of it is serious. It's not really a love story.

Spoiler

It's a story about how an artist moulds his creation to its final form. Hestal himself admits that he loves Albarino but the forensics scientist loves Hestal the way a creator loves his greatest creation.

[collapse]

There are some twists and turns that blew my mind. It's not the main story that I love the most but the small things. The devil is in the details :)

por ejemplo, George Robb's girlfriend, Blanca, doesn't kill to avenge his death. We all knew the BAU already suspected George so in actuality, it didn't matter to the normal person if a evidence was faked. However, George was enjoying the cat and mouse chase. He didn't care if he died as a result, so long as the game was fair. But it wasn't. Evidence was planted. He got caught without making a mistake, so Blanca avenges not his death, but for the insult he faced in being unable to play a fair game.

[collapse]

I also love Olga.

All in all, I want to name my firstborn after the author. ≪3<3<3

Edit: the author has uploaded the novel on ao3 so you can go check it out there if you want to MTL it. Give some kudos cause she really deserves it. <<less

This is one of my favourite novels at the moment! It is so different from anything I have read on this website and it is a breath of fresh air. I would say this is because the characters have succinct personalities that drive the story forward along with the knowledge that no, they aren't antiheroes or people with some noble goal, they are in fact moralless serial killers who aren't afraid to screw with others and even each in very messed up ways.

If you are looking for a new story... more>> and don't mind some gore and psychopathic characters, then this is the story for you! <<less

If there's a single crime novel that you had to throw away your morals temporarily for, it's this one. No, seriously. The author makes sure that the reader is aware of how sick both the MC and the ML are- which is totally fine, that's the point of writing them! The writing and especially transitions are so well done, and the transitions read like cuts in a crime drama. Each serial killer showcased in the novel has their own sense of aesthetic and twisted morals, including the MC and ml,... more>> and the author has put so, so much work referencing the bible, famous works of art, novels, etc that nearly every chapter has a footnote. It's morbid, gruesome, but also interesting in their own ways.

This isn't a typical wish fulfillment "I want to see a character doing this and that" without thinking about the consequences, the world and other characters are all built so well upon each other. You might think 790k chinese characters (don't know how many words a full translation would be, but it would probably be more considering how English is haha) may go by really slow, but this just makes you want to keep reading. There's a lot of cases and series of events, but they're all so engaging!

Major spoilers below

Spoiler

Every character has their own personality, like they actually exist instead of serving as another simple foil to emphasize MC and ml's power (though they are definitely strong), but the characters you would hope to be intelligent are actually intelligent! MC and ml's identities were revealed around the second half, which is still really quick. Even after the ending, where they escape to another land, they know that they're being watched by the guards/special forces of that country (which makes it even more interesting because they have to, like, phone the boss? Of that area and casually ask if they can kill someone lol).

[collapse]

Anyway, to sum it up it's basically about two freaks pretending to be functioning members of society in a city ridden with crime, investigations, and most of all lashing out on each other!! If you like love-hate relationships with around the same level of power, come read Wine & Gun! Thank you to the translator as well and good luck :D
