Tao Xiaodong had a blind brother. Tang Suoyan, gentle and calm, was his brother’s favourite doctor, and Tao Xiaodong couldn’t help but like him for that.

Oftentimes, people lose sight of that which was easily gained.

Over the years, Tong Ning was so coddled by Tang Suoyan that he failed to appreciate how fetching this rare specimen was—dumping him without pause, and picking him up again when he had a change of heart.

Except, this time, he was a step too late. Tao Xiaodong had long made his move.

Tao Xiaodong looked at Tong Ning, telling him with a smile, “It doesn’t matter who Tang Suoyan used to be with. He’s mine now. As long as I don’t let go, you’ll never be able to take away what I hold onto.”

A very nice mature love story between 2 older men. No prior knowledge of the other books in the same universe needed (I assume since I didn't read those and I could enjoy this all the same). Has some bittersweet elements towards to ending but overall a sweet story.

I wasn't sure where the overall storyline would be at because ... more>>
Spoiler

I thought it was easy to see the TXD had good intentions for TSY early on so they would get together earlier but a good chunk of the story was really TXD pursuing TSY and it does span a good time in the novel because TSY had just got out of a long term relationship. I actually liked that aspect because TXD was very respectful of it and never crossed any boundaries.

[collapse]

Regarding that third person in the summary that made the summary seemed a little confusing, major spoiler but
Spoiler

TN is TSY previous lover whom he was in a long term relationship in with. Tbh I was disappointed in TN. I suspect he might be on the ace spectrum because he was highly averse to s*x and that was fine if he didn't want to have s*x in the relationship (and there were many other things that ended it). But later on he reveals he never liked TSY (or somewhere along those lines), kind of crushing the past 13 years they spent together.

[collapse]

Spoiler regarding the position:
Spoiler

I actually thought TXD was the gong but... he's not, lol. Interestingly, he does mention that he usually isn't in that (shou) position but with TSY, he doesn't mind.

Ending spoiler:
Spoiler

TXD family line has a hereditary eye sight issue (losing eye sight) that he suddenly starts to get as well. I was starting to speed read the last few chapters so I may not have read it properly but didn't seem to grasp if it ended on a good or just hopeful note that TSY will find a cure/take care of him.

Overall, with both characters in their 30s, there is maturity in the characters that is like a breath of fresh air. <<less

So the ex after 13 years of relationship just told ML that he didnt like doing it and he feel repulse by it. What happebed to the 12 years that you didnt communicate and compromise. That's just taking for granted. I know people have different personalities and likes and dislike and he just happen to not like s*x but not conveying and putting ML aside everytime there is a problem is a big no. "I don't want to see you but I can't let you go" that is so s*upid.... more>> It's like you always assume ML will be waiting for you till you settle your self and he's always gonna be there. There is no sense of value. Not hating just not giving him respect in terms of relationships. Both of them was getting tired of this and ML especially, that's why he can't even remember what they were arguing about after few years of this setup. I can relate because I know someone like the ex, every argument leads to asking for a breakup then lots of coaxing then coming back together.

But that is where MC comes in. The unvalued ML finds someone who will cherish him. ML's parents raised him right but he just loved the wrong person. The ex was pampered and tolerated too much. <<less

TL;DR: read it. It's sincere.

A spiritually mature story, showing some real knowledge of the characters' professions and the value they hold. It's not actually a faceslapping novel as a blurb might suggest -- it's about people who simply work hard to live their lives, and who have sacrificed to shoulder great responsibilities under difficult circumstances. The twist, when it comes, is terrible and yet logical, and there are no magical solutions, and yet the ending can be happy. Great translation, too. Will make you feel warm and toasty inside after... more>> crying, 100% recommended.

I have never met such a filigree Eng TL. This is definitely a full-fledged literary translation that you read and don’t frown from the choice of words and dry sentences. The style of the translator is evident, it’s individual, so I will definitely read the rest of luckykoi's translations.

As for the novel. Oh my god, this novel is the first one on my reading list, which I rate 5/5. What a delicious slowburn. The pace is smooth but not boring. I liked the way MC and ML's characters are revealed... more>> through their relationships with other people, through the scrapes they get into or the cases they face. As a person who hasn’t read much of the genre “slice of life” with an emphasis on building relationships between two mature men, I’m very impressed because the relationship between the main couple is something that I really craved in other novels. Tao Xiaodong and Tang Suoyan are not infantile, they talk, they trust each other, there’s no sulk and silent treatment, no manipulations, no speculations, no groundless jealousy. And at the same time their relationship is not sterile, they have conflicts and they resolve them.

Also, OH MY HEAVENS, I'm fascinated by how gradually the chemistry between them develops. How they SLOW BURN, how marvelously and brightly they flare up and deliberately turn the knob down to a slow fire!!! <<less

This was the sweet love story of two more mature leads. I liked it enough to finish quite quickly, however there were some things that really annoyed me.

The relationship takes forever to develop. The ML was in a long term, 15 years, relationship with someone else at the start of the book. Mind you that relationship seemed quite toxic and frankly was not good for him. When they finally break-up everyone makes such a big deal of him ending a relationship that was so long. Even the MC refuses... more>> to pursue him or even believe that relationship was really over for the longest time simply because of how many year were invested into it. I find that to be quite ridiculous, doesn't matter how long you invest in a relationship if the other person becomes selfish and toxic then good job to you for getting out of there.

Once we move away from that a bit and the ML and MC start dating, the other man just decides come back a couple of times to try and get the ML back. But he comes back like 6 months later, then a year or more later. It makes no sense for you to expect someone to be waiting for you after all that time. Just seemed unrealistic. But even then those encounters were very unsatisfactory, there was opportunity for some well deserved face slapping, but the author never acted up on that.

The last thing I didn't like was how it ended. The "problem" that was thrown in at the end. It seemed to come out of no-where and just made a sweet story sad. I know the author was going for a "we'll be together through better and worse", but as a reader it just felt like needless melodrama.

All in all I finished this quite quickly and I wanted to know what happens next, so definitively worth a read. <<less

A mature, heart warming, relaxing read, which will make you feel all comfortable. Close to reality with characters with their own struggles in life and emotions, and how it affects their dynamic and romance.

A beautiful healing read. Highly recommended.

This novel is a bit of a pain to read, can't lie. I got tired of the two leads dancing around each other for so long, as this author really likes putting characters in the ambiguous period for longer than they need to be. The characters are slightly better than Tattoo (at least I wasn't as annoyed with this MC as with Tattoo's MC), but the MC here also suffers from the same issue of being called "mature" but acting with all the emotional maturity of a teenager.

Like please make... more>> it make sense why this 34 year old man spends three weeks freaking out over a handjob, to the point where he almost entirely avoids talking to his partner and basically nearly ghosts him. I'm sorry but I just don't understand why this author feels the need to produce such avoidant characters that can't seem to speak three words of communication to their partner before running off and leaving them on read.

I liked the story with the ML's ex, as I find his perspective relatable, being more as*xual myself. He wasn't a terrible person, just not the right person for ML, and it's sad how their relationship ended up. <<less

Although when searching for a new read I usually find myself going for light-hearted comedy based novels, I really end up falling for these kind of mellow, more dramatic, mature with serious issues kind of stories that have depth and can properly engage your emotions and attention.

The self awareness but still with room for growth and the slow character build as you get to know them better as they get to know each other better. The flirting and chemistry, yet still careful to keep the boundary in a very adult... more>> manner—not just outright going for it, was written realistically yet still kept the magic of tugging at your heartstrings.

Oh the heart twinges were gooood. Teared up on the train towards the end, was so scared of a BE (found myself thinking oh I should have stopped earlier). But going through it and reading their reactions & side character reactions just brought it to another level.

The only thing I wish had more dimension/I got a better understanding of was the ML's ex. It was mildly confusing and on the verge of 'existing to further the plot point'. But as a whole didn't really matter that much because the focus was on the main leads in contrast, which I'm happy with anyway.

Spoiler

Like the ex seemed ok, then had some mental (?) issues/revulsion to sex/physical contact. Some deeper issues of why he got together with ML which wasn't that much explored properly. Stayed for 10 years in what they make seem like a dependent relationship with ML spoiling him that's not really explained entirely. Just wish they added depth to his character to better understand his motivations which came across quite one dimensional.

[collapse]

Favourite to re-read in the future.

Add on: "Except, this time, he was a step too late. Tao Xiaodong had long made his move." > somewhat misleading bc ML had already made the decision to move on and close that chapter which I felt was a point I really liked about the relationship is that there was no half-hearted push & pull deciding between partner A & B kind of situation. There was acknowledgment of the past but just focused on their mutual attraction and different emotional states and figuring out their feelings and making it work. <<less

Now where the heck are the extras, San Jiu??

This story is a break from the nonsensical romances I love to read. This is a slowburn, a heartwarming yet also bittersweet love story of two very different people. On one hand, you have cream of the crop, God-sent, hunky ophthalmologist that makes you wonder why your ophthalmologist isn't this hot. At the other end, you have the lowkey philanthropic, affluent tattoo artist. Similar dynamic contrast to that of Tattoo, which makes it so interesting to read. I love love love... more>> when unrequited love is finally reciprocated, especially when it's your longtime crush. Two mature men, falling in love at an undeniably good pace. There's ups & downs, bittersweet & passionate moments. Their resilience is what really strikes me.

But GOD, SANG JIU, how dare you make me cry the night before work. I kind of wished the end was a little bit longer; I'm curious to see more future events. All in all, a well-written novel!

Spoiler

On the topic of Tong Ning, I just think he's frustratingly human. It's easy to scold him because he really chose a harder path not only for himself but for Tang Suoyan too. I do hope that he finds genuine happiness with someone else in the future. Maybe in an extra... maybe

This is such a beautifully written and translated story with great depth and plot while being all fluffy and sweet it'll make you wish for long lasting romance it'll make you want to be a good partner and wise communicator. It has a good series of emotions and quite realistic about topics. One of the best stories I've read recently. The characters are very matured while still having their own personalities and problems it was a treat honestly

I’ve always been a fan of novels/stories that include people with disabilities. This novel in particular really made me happy. It made me feel like the author really took their time writing this and it offered a lot of insight on the different levels of blindness or eyesight loss.

I also loved that the MC took care to actively hire kids that had different disabilities. That warmed my heart.

i enjoyed it thoroughly and really hope that I can find more novels such as this.

To me its truly 5 stars.

It's a well written cohesive romance. It was a pleasure to read and as a romance a cheered for them since the begining starting from ther subtle interactions.

I recommend this story for anyone who wants to read a romance with mature characters where there's no dogblood props or tropes such as rebirth, second chance, identity swaps etc. There's no love triangle either.

It's a glimpse into the life of two people, both are mature and in their thirties, have their own lives, worries, profession and... more>> aspirations. I think is a very mature outlook on a relationship where both are adult and independent and work to build a stable relationship.

Overall the story is fairly realistic, you can say it is a slice of life because is a glimpse into the ordinary life of these characters during a certain period of time. As such I don't think there's a problem with where the author stopped the story. Their lives keep moving but we only can't get to see.

If you read Wildfire go ahead and read Ferocious Dog of Old. The focus of the story changes, but we can see further in the future and maybe somethings left unanswered in Wildfire will be there. <<less

This was a great read.

The main characters were engaging, and it was a really nice change of pace to experience relationship development from a more mature perspective. I felt like the pacing was really good and never got bored, which I often experience about 2/3s of my way through a read 😅

Though the younger brother didn't show up as much as I'd expected, I also felt like the disability aspect was handled really well throughout.

I think my only con would be that I feel like the translator misused a few... more>> minor words occasionally, but other than that the translation was really polished and easy to read. I'll definitely look for more of their work.

All in all, I absolutely devoured this novel and highly recommend it. <<less

I didn't know this was from the same author as Tattoo. No wonder the quality is definitely up there.

I was quite surprised at the ending though, I feel like it came too fast.

I'm quite confused what happened with the MC's little brothers. I think there's a separate story for them.

But overall, really good read and great translation quality too.
