Ling Xing opens his eyes to find himself transported to ancient times, becoming a “chong xi” bridegroom, married to a man on his deathbed. The wedding ceremony was conducted with his husband’s younger brother standing in as a proxy. Three days after the wedding, his husband passes away, and Ling Xing is transformed from a bridegroom into a widower.

The original Ling Xing had fled famine and hardship, leaving him with no place to call home. Fortunately, the Shen family takes him in and allows him to live with them. The Shen family is poor, struggling to make ends meet, often going hungry and lacking adequate clothing. They subsist on a meager diet of porridge mixed with wheat bran, barely enough to fill their stomachs.

Ling Xing, in his past life, was a food vlogger, skilled in recreating various cuisines and an excellent cook. To earn a living, he starts selling steamed buns, rice noodle rolls, and grilled skewers. His small food stall gradually grows into a two-story restaurant, becoming quite prosperous.

As Ling Xing’s business thrives and his life improves, more and more people come forward to propose marriage. The matchmakers chatter incessantly, saying, “The Shen family, you shouldn’t stop Xing Ge’er from remarrying.” “In our Yu dynasty, there’s no rule that a married woman or ge’er must remain a widow for life.” “The one proposing marriage is a scholar!”

Ling Xing is constantly pestered by these matchmakers, feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately, his brother-in-law, who had given up his life as a hunter to pursue studies, returns after completing his imperial exams. Under his cold gaze, the matchmakers quickly disperse.

That night, Ling Xing is pinned down by a tall, shadowy figure.

“If you are willing to remarry, I want to marry you,” the figure says.

Ling Xing is stunned, exclaiming in disbelief, “Shen Hui, are you crazy? I’m your brother-in-law!”

Shen Hui lowers his gaze and replies, “You were married to me, so what kind of brother-in-law are you?”

Note:

The title “chōng xǐ” refers to the traditional practice of marrying to ward off bad luck.

I like the poor to rich aspect, but there was so much unnecessary drama that I gave up reading out of fear I’d have a heart attack from anger. I’m someone who can handle dramatic stories and have read my fair share, but this took it to a whole new level.

Not to mention, I’m astounded by MC being a bit of a Gary Stu. Every man seemingly falls in love with his smile, he’s so selfless it’s like he craps out rainbows and butterflies to make sure others don’t hate... more>> him (aside from the villains), and somehow he not only has an encyclopedia of modern recipes in his brain despite not having a background as a chef but also uses recipes like Pokemon cards to get what he wants or needs, even if it means stopping his business which he did at least THREE TIMES in like 50 or so chapters. And why did he need to do that? Because author wanted to throw endless rounds of drama for plot that wasn’t plotting. But sure, he ain’t perfect, because he has imperfections! Yes! He can’t knit like a god... nor does he have enough control to make some kinds of noodles. Sure.

And the romance. Half the time I’m like, what romance. 95% of the book is second Shen brother pining over MC, his “sister in law”, even though his brother’s been dead for months, everyone agrees it’s alright for MC to get married again, MC literally knew the brother for like 3-4 days before he kicked the bucket, etc. Was author going for a forbidden romance, because it’s ridiculous.

If it sounds like I have a lot of hate for this novel, look at my rating, I don’t. There are a few enjoyable aspects. The entire Shen family actually being decent people is one of them. But my sanity flew out the window reading this, so beware. <<less

I was drawn in by the cover art. Overall, it’s on the better side of decent for this type of novel.

Pacing is good. There are undercurrents of various political intrigue happening in the background that MC is peripherally affected by. I wouldn’t say things are resolved super fast but MC always resolves with the upper hand.

I love the interactions between MC and ML. There’s a lot of sweetness. But don’t expect mutual romance relationship. They get together literally in the last few chapters. It’s more of ML pining for most... more>> of the story and then MC slowly realizing his feelings in the last ten or so chapters.

I like MC’s character. While not too complex, he’s a cheerful guy who cares immensely for those that treat him well. He wants everyone in the family to do well. And he goes extra hard for his younger brother.

The main focus of the story is definitely MC’s cooking and business from cooking to go from poor to rich. <<less
