Once she woke up, Gu Xuejiao became the arrogant and willful stepsister of the book’s male lead. Her specialty resided in breaking the relationship between the male and female lead… she is the nth female character.

Gu Xuejiao thought about this character´s ending. A desolate, abhorrent annihilation… and decided it’s better to continue to practice the Wu San workbooks she just finished in her last life.

The Cheng family watched in alarm:

The girl who was rebellious, and only served to let others worry; asked with a simple expression:

“Do you think it’s better for me to apply to Tsinghua University or Beijing University?”

Cheng family: ….

Note: Wu San workbooks is the Chinese version of Barron’s and Princeton’s for the SAT

This novel has many good ratings and reviews and I think it is deserved.
I will try no to repeat the good points that many had already pointed out in their reviews, but to add some. This work is the first one that made me want to have a take on translating.

Our MC in her past life had a pretty shitty starting point in her life. Abandoned, then adopted, then orphaned and poor. But still from the few good things life had given her, solely on determination and hard work her path was sure to be a promising one - if she hadn't died before.

She got reborn in the body of a girl with the same name as her, similar appearance but with a really good starting point in life, but it got shitty afterwards. Actually, the funny thing is, if you compare the two Gu Xuejiaos, one life had given stones to take out the milk, and the other life had given her milk but it became spoiled. What I understood the message that the author wanted to pass was - It doesn't matter your starting point in life, what matters most is your mindset. And this is too much of a wide range of a topic but basically is, if you have the right mindset, your life will be better. Well, this is a truth for anyone but very very few can actually apply it in life.

And the reborn Gu Xuejiao had the right mindset, and we got to know her life from this history, and it's a rewarding experience.

We have her experience from awakening in a family in shambles, reputation in the ditches, and miserable school performance to fulfilling her desires in life. She isn't ambitious - she just has things that she really likes to do and chases hard for her dreams.

One of the things I like is how she herself knows she isn't very on the smart side, both intellectually and emotionally. She knows her shortcomings well and just covers them up with determination and hard work. Well, to be hard-working, you really need to be determined. Gu Xuejiao knows that while a genius needs 1 day she may need 30 days. If a genius can be an athlete, school bully, and have a high EQ, maybe, she can only dedicate herself to mathematics and life her life having an average physique and be a little s*upid on the emotional side. For you to get your shortcomings an advantages right, this in itself is an achievement.

As for the text, some parts can seem a little too dragged on but this doesn't make the novel bad - it's just a bad part of it. I like how it portrays her family, her social circle, and her mindset on her future and studies. Especially her relationship with her mother, it's a very common problem nowadays and the way it shows it, I like it very much.

We too have love interests and an ML but as far as our emotionally impaired MC is, expect a SLOOOOW romance, but it's worth it. It's really sweet. We do have an overbearing-president ML but he isn't a possessive scumbag. He does is possessive but he respects her much more than that. He can be seen as an ass-wiping one but he only does wipes her ass when it's something really overboard - if he can't even cover up that then it's really being useless. He really loves and cherishes the MC... Had I already told their romance is sweet?

I personally believe that the things you read can affect your mood, your desires, and your mindset. That's why I like to read positive-minded histories more and this one is a really good example.

I would strongly recommend this for hi-school students, university students, or simply someone who is felling shitty and wants to cheer up in one way or another. Maybe I can actually call this history a motivational one. A worth read. Kudos for the translation team.

One of the best written novel!!!!!

I don't usually read BG novels since most are shallow, especially when the theme is about school life. But this one is really great. I like the story and plot?

MC is a little mature for her age (19y/o prior transmigration), in terms of her calmness. She's not smart but she's hard working and kind. Kind but not like a Mary Sue or white lotus.

For the ML, he's my male god. LolXD he is a Gary Sue type and has the aura of second male lead... more>> that protects the MC from the sideline. <<less

It's amazing. There are so many fresh elements in this that despite the usual transmigration troupe, this stands out from the rest. The MC is really different from other FLs, like instead of blending in with the new world and worrying about the plot she decides to fulfill her dreams. I love the character development in this, especially MC's family. If you are looking for a romantic novels with lots of fluff, this isn't one of them. ML appears early in the novel but he's like a teacher, confidant, mentor... more>> to our MC (there's an age gap of 9 years but it's very sweet) and the romance between them is slow burn. One thing I especially love is the 2nd ML (I actually thought he'd be the ML lol). MC and 2nd ML have a really a amazing chemistry,
Spoiler

He is MC's first love but gets rejected by her because he was not really able to understand her and every time he appears there's a sour feeling and I think ML also knows that MC will have a special spot for him forever

[collapse]
This is probably the first time that I had a SLS but could understand properly why they weren't suitable.

The story genuinely follows MC and her academic pursuit and as she grows as a person and learns about the world. This also tackles issues of academic pressure and su*cide through the side characters.
Spoiler

Shulan and Yu Cheng have the saddest end T.T

[collapse]

I cried after reading the last epilogue and kinda regret reading it but it makes the novel end in a circle. The circle of life and death. It's very bittersweet but we realize they both lived happily till the very end and their end is only the beginning of another new life. It's really beautiful.

Lastly, I'd like to say how much I appreciate the ML. The ML and MC have such a wholesome and beautiful love. It's a love which is patient and understanding of another. There's mutual support and reciprocation (ML is usually the one who waits for MC and cares for her but slowly she understands him and reciprocates his feelings and care, it's natural and wholesome) ML is an absolute gentleman, he never forced his feelings on her but waited till she graduated from HS
Spoiler

and helped her get over 2nd ML and was there for her whenever she needed him and also when she didn't need him

[collapse]

Really good read, will come back to re-read this after its translated or maybe just binge read the MTL version again (it's pretty easy to understand) This should get more views. <<less

Truly lovely novel. To some it might be a bit too slow, but there is plenty of depth within this book that does not revolve around the main couple that makes the story grow smoothly. Non the less, the main couple was the absolute best!

The story has a character who is extremely self aware, which is truly refreshing. Through reading this novel it felt as though I followed Xue Jiao (MC) through life, and what a beautiful life it was. The development of our characters, both the MC and our ML, was sweet and heart-warming. The epilogue has me gushing tears of happiness; it goes to show what a wonderful story this is. I will definitely re-read it in future and I recommend people to give this book a chance.

The author honestly played the genres (drama, romance, school life) so well, I did not get bored even though the chapters are more on the academics setting. The pace is also just right, the characters are great and there are valuable lines or lessons thrown at you from time to time. This is one of those rare romance novels that could touch your views in various aspects of life. It is carefully written and there were no insignifcant events, everything is interrelated.

Moreover, I enjoyed the slow romance between the protagonists... more>> and find their interactions sweet despite it being mostly phone conversations at the first half – it's sweet and get even sweeter once the MC starts attending university. I unknowingly became emotionally invested into them that I'm actually writing this now with tears still rolling down my face after reading that last extra chapter. This novel just ended in the best way possible. The author is reaaallly good, I hope to read more of his/her works. <<less

... it's beautiful. Just beautiful.

Edit: I like the portrayal of relationships (not just the romantic one between MC and ML, but family relationships, rivalries, friendships, etc), and I honestly recommend this for... well, everyone. I think everyone has something to learn. And I think I'll keep this tabbed, and try to re-read some parts at least once a year. There's something for everyone. It's really a rare gem.

The author of this novel is really good. There's a lot to learn from this novel while following the challenges of FL from her studies, family relationship, friendship and love life... It's heartwarming and full of moral lessons... I cried a lot on several situations and this novel helps enlighten my understanding on some aspect as a teacher myself, when it comes to guiding students to reach their dreams.

I'm currently reading another novel written by this author titled 'Live Goddess' and it's also good. I will be reading all of... more>> her works soon!? <<less

I was on the fence with this because of various points. The romance is slow.... sloth slow; too much academia info (MC is a mathematician) and her journey, her homework, her math problems are a huge part of the novel.... in detail. I love the ML even though he is a typical overbearing president who has a tragic backstory, loves only MC and has never had a reaction to any woman beyond MC. Now, I love how they show the growth of MC, her character growth is very well done... more>> and this novel has some very important family issues/lessons. You can really feel how invested the author was in this. Not a bad read but its not one I'd read twice. <<less

The reviews really put me off from reading this one for quite a long time, with comments about grooming or what so not, which is not really surprising given the number of characters I have read in the Romance genre that fall in love underage, and the age gap trope.

The other aspect that surprised me was the extent to which mental health and relationships were discussed. It was not framed in the best or most positive way, but it did something better than what I have seen far. It often... more>> depicted the cruelty in the real world, and the struggles of people, and seamlessly weaved into MC's life. It also felt like multiple stories in more, making story world more 3D. The relationship with her mother also made me feel strangely nostalgic, as it made me think about my relationship with my own mother to find it was surprisingly similar. I was happy her mother learnt from her experience and embraced MC as she was.

Controversial opinion:

Spoiler

At some point as I read I felt that there was nothing wrong with their relationship, though I did despised the intentions he had when he approached her. I would say it is wishful thinking to fall in love so badly after meeting a couple times. I do have say that the mindset of the other characters like ML's parents were absolutely disgusting. Yet, regardless of what thoughts he had, the ML never crossed the line, never harassed her, openly profess his feelings, or pester her to like him back. I started thinking what is the right thing to do when you like someone you shouldn't? ML never liked her because she was a child, but he simply liked her as a person. The original MC was already 18, so her soul was not old either, so what was wrong about this whole situation? Now, I am not saying ML was right, he should have thought twice about the fact that she was 16, he should have questioned his own morals. I just feel it is too harsh of a criticism to call it grooming.

There are so many ambiguous situations that make it inappropriate for someone to like another, due to their roles in society, making it an ethical issue of relationships in power imbalance and exploitation. Yet, as two single individuals whose only purpose is to like each other it seems justified.

He never interacted with her inappropriately, neither did he manipulate her emotions or thoughts in any way. Even if he himself calls it a 'perfect plan' all he did was sincerely show her his care and waited for her, I did not see any sort of manipulation. Even if he did make salty comments about Yi Tianyu, and divert her attention away from the situation, I feel like a 17 year old jealous teenager would have done the same. MC had all the freedom to choose otherwise, which the ML always felt insecure about, but MC chose him. From beginning to end there was no exploitation. If it is solely because of the reason she is not 18, I think 18 is just a number without any meaning. It only means she is a legal adult. 25 makes more of a significance than 18 does, because that is when the brain is fully developed.

So was their relationship wrong? No. Did it have the potential to become something of an exploitative nature, and morally wrong? Yes.

[collapse]

I really don't want to discuss in depth about the characters and development, it was pretty easy and straightforward to understand. I was in fact a little disappointed about the reasons why ML likes MC, there could have been more of a connection made before ML started liking MC. It was a little abrupt. I also feel that ML's character setting was made typical rich ceo to give him invincibility buffs and make him seem cool, could have just made him a teenager with a cool personality or mature outlook. I like the way the ML brain work though when he analyses the human relationship politics with MC. I also was pretty disappointed he was one of those 'I will like as long as you like it' like pls have some likes and dislikes of your own or there is just no substance to your character.

Overall, it was surprisingly better than I thought, if you overlook the age gap. Like definitely not romanticising it, but this story would be just fine and all the same without MC being older rich male, and it is a detail you can just gloss over while reading. <<less

Things I liked about this: the FL is a mathematician, which I've never seen before, and wants to go to Tsinghua, which I've also never seen before lol. Also she realizes both of the parents suck and doesn't waste any time on them.

Things I didn't: I've read other stories with Adult Guy x High School Girl and enjoyed them, so it's not for that reason that I don't like the ML. On one hand, he wants to be there for the FL and accompany her through... more>> ups and downs, but on the other knows he doesn't have a good reason to do any of these things so he sneaks around like a scammer. On one hand, he wants her to grow by herself and enjoy her life as a student, but on the other wants to monopolize her and keep all her attention on him. If the ML at least admitted how contradictory he was, I could respect that but he's all self-righteous about how he deserves this. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but that's not for him to decide.

Also, author, did you really have to do that to the deskmate?
Spoiler

The whole thing about how his life was ruined because of this one night was totally unnecessary, since the FL will never know and it doesn't impact the plot.

[collapse]
It was also shoved into the middle of an otherwise interesting chapter, which made it obvious that it was just there to play up the drama. Every time I think about continuing to read this story, I remember this and it kills my mood. <<less

Pretty great story, the female lead really wants to study haha. Even when she has a boyfriend its more like he following her like dog, that's why he has a chance because what she wants to do is to study and do her business. She is of course perfect but she does a lot of hard work too.

I liked school part more and ending was so-so. That boyfriend was like not a real person but she could have just gotten dog idk.

I will give 2 star. 1 for Face slapping and 2 for their FL and Ml’s relationship after she became older.

First I wanna say is there is so much better novel than this so just don’t waist your time with this one. Because author wrote this unbearably boring. I just skipped the half of it, because I can’t drop what I started.

is step-dad is the best. He loved her even when FL is the worst. I guess only him loved her when she was at her worst, not even her... more>> bio mother and after her mother’s slapping just because she doesn’t act how she wanted made me hate her more. We all know mother wouldn’t love her is she stayed the same. And I think she was so young to treated that way. Just talk to your daughter. Even after she became good, her mother still doesn’t know how to act to her child, if her stepdad wasn’t with them, mother and FL couldn’t even live together.

At first it was quite entertaining but after that everything became repetitive and boring. ML who is 26 years old attracted to 16 years older, high schooler. I know she is 19 before transmigration but he doesn’t know that and following and watching her from anywhere and any time. Stalking and Creepy.

Btw I look up the meaing of grooming and yes what he did is grooming her. It was so oblivious. He literally guide her to became grown up WHILE loving and attracted to her. He was like, I will wait her to became older. Umm, sir what? Why don’t you just love someone at your age but not a high schooler. Waiting her doesn’t make it better. And what bothers me is after they get together everyone was only saying she was to young, author didn’t let us forget they age gap.

And the most unrealistic and one of the worst part is She's jumping in the car of a man she doesn't know properly. She act so defenseless and careless.

Btw when she like some boy and boy loves her to and they could have been a been sweet couple but girl thought it was a temporary love and rejected him and cried after him. While she cries he manipulated her to think this will fade away and take her to his apartment.

-reading their romance is boring at first because she is high schooler and can’t even meet with him. After graduation from high school it got better but when they started doing project in college it got really boring because author just wrote the whole progress and I felt like I am reading scientific article, so yes I skipped those part and just read their love but there were very few, and her father’s reaction was so realistic, I like it. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel. I initially doubted this bc of reviews... but if you can separate reality from fiction (esp agegap), you can fully enjoy it.

I find this unique from other school transmigrations bc FL (Gu Xue Jao) really enjoyed studying. She's working hard not for revenge or to make her life better... but mainly because of her own love on education and achieving her dream. Also, this novel tackled other students' life and pressure including young love. (Some events can be triggering such as d3pression and unaliving)

For... more>> the romance...

Spoiler

- Other than age difference, ML (Lin Zhihua) was decent. I doubted him bc stalkerish (due to his odd nature) but he took care of FL and became her friend/mentor before being together. He never demanded/forced her and respected her decisions but continue to guard her wellness. Even took years to wait for her. His maturity suited FL.

- Also, I liked the twist of author on FL's puppy love to 2nd ML as part of her teen life. Same feelings but wrong time. As a reader, we thought the same as 2nd ML's POV... not knowing the FL showed her feelings to 2nd ML in her own actions.

[collapse]

I also like almost all supporting characters and passerbys + character developments. They got depth and some might appear shortly but got huge impact.

The ending was also very satisfying.

CONS ⤵️⤵️ (but still give it good rate bc I enjoyed it after weeks of novel slump)

Spoiler

- I repeat, need to separate reality from fiction... some subjects esp research parts.

-I didn't like author making 2nd ML lonely even became secret godfather of the kid... the only saving part is he might got happy ending with OG GXJ with snippets in his dream (especially poor OG owner needs to have happy life too)

- One cannon-fodder's d3ath became catalyst to leads to be together. If only author wrote scene before or after they became couple, I'll understand it as part of Young Adult experience of FL... but nah, did it during FL's love doubts making it felt that other characters was served as sacrificed.

- As I said, ML is good but can't blame bad reviews bc there's grooming indication... bc he already loved FL when she's still minor and already got intention. Even "guiding" her in her decisions. (good points, that he's patient and willing to wait and FL is transmigrated so her age is quite okay)

Just the age gap makes me feel disgusted. The fact that this guy is obssessed with a girl that isn't even an adult yet is absolutely jarring and leaves a bad taste. I'd still give it a chance of the male lead was even 2 years older than FL at most, but from what I've read so far, I presume he's at least 7-8 years older than her and she's 16. F*cking pedo.

Pushing aside the disturbing age difference between the leads, the writing is just bad. Don't get me wrong, the translations are really great and I can tell that the translator has put a lot of thought and effort in including cultural context and meanings of phrases. It's the writing tone and flow that feels so hollow.

It's so bad that scenes that are supposed to be humorous come off as jarring or crass and scenes that are supposed to be touching come off as ineffective word padding.

Spoiler

For example, the dialogue between her and her deskmate I think is intended as humourous and teasing, which should set him up as second male lead. But the way the conversations are set up makes the words themselves sound badly scripted and it's actually makes 2nd-ML very annoying.

The scene between MC and her Mom where she tells Mom that she recognizes how bio-Dad has treated her Mom badly and she plans to cut ties with him, should come off as a special moment but sounds hollow and out of place. There was even a comedic resolution thrown about her mom's bad cooking that just comes off super awkward.

[collapse]

Overall, it just reads like a more descriptive journal of events or detailed log of events.

I do plan on continuing with the story because the premise is refreshing and I enjoy her joy of studying, but the writing is seriously throwing me off. <<less

about a 2.5, I guess. dull, dispirited, lacking in plot cumulations that actually satisfy, drags on with uninspired looping arcs that don't change that much.

I don't really care about the ML being problematic, but he's just so f*cking perfect at everything that I'm about to fall asleep. He's insanely handsome, insanely rich, insanely smart, physiologically can only accept MC = insanely loyal, insanely devoted, insanely caring towards the MC, insanely composed and calm... you know, there are a lot of Mr. Perfects in webnovels, but how dull.

and then the MC... more>> is... all her problems feel trite. it's not that she doesn't have any, but they're written and resolved in a way where most of the time I can hardly feel any tension at all. Like if a highschool fight novel protag was getting beaten in a fight and went, "oh wait! I have the ruyi bang in my pocket! ehe, oops!" and insta-KOs everyone. Except instead of the monkey king's staff, MC has the ML on speed dial.

the whole story's like that -- it's all too simple, clear-cut, and packaged in kid-friendly extra-large puzzle pieces.

Do choices have consequences? yes. do other characters get their due from their bad choices? yes. but is MC only ever making 100% studying-devoted good choices? also yes. and does she ever f*ck up? not to my knowledge. seriously, does the MC ever f*ck up?

the MC actually has some legit family issues and image problems (from the previous body's soul going wildly emo), but the way the novel's written, it all becomes rather insignificant. and after the MC transmigrates over, she basically exclusively makes good, rational life choices (aside from befriending a 30 year old man and going places with him), so all there's left is to patch up the OG owner's mistakes.

I liked Liu Jiaxue's arc, but wasn't that into the resolution.

(ah, personally I like the second ML's character more, even if his misunderstandings/internal monologues can induce an insane amount of second-hand embarassment. at least he's slightly funny and significantly more humanoid.) <<less
