Jiang Xichu served as Chen Man’s secretary for many years, attending to her every need. Workplace disagreements were common, and one day, after a heated argument with Chen Man, Jiang Xichu left the company. Tragically, she was fatally stabbed by a vengeful neurotic shortly after exiting the building.

Shortly after her demise, Jiang Xichu received unsettling news from the underworld’s officials. It was revealed that not only did Chen Man feel no remorse for her passing, but she also had unlawfully withheld Jiang Xichu’s rightful salary. Moreover, her funeral was conducted hastily, denying her colleagues the chance to pay their respects. Fueled by anger, Jiang Xichu returned to the human realm with a vengeful resolve, intent on terrifying the callous Chen Man to her core.

Upon reaching Chen Man’s bedroom, Jiang Xichu beheld a disheveled figure clutching her urn, gazing solemnly at images from her past.

A year later, Chen Man also died, her cause of death: su*cide due to severe depression.

Departing Chen Man’s abode, Jiang Xichu’s emotions were tangled. She felt compelled to return to the underworld, seeking answers from Chen Man herself.

However, after stepping out of the house, Jiang Xichu found herself reborn.

Encountering General Manager Chen once more, whose mere words had the power to leave her breathless, Jiang Xichu: …

You sly woman, you are really adept at playing two-face.

This novel is here and there for me. It was appealing at the beginning, but I felt like the decline that came with it wasn't the best. Still a good three stars. If I could I would do 3-1/2.

Jiang Xichu and Chen Man are coworkers who have been through university together. Despite being friends for so long and knowing each other well, they are always caught bickering. Do they get along or not?! Their other coworkers can't seem to figure it out...

Jiang Xichu ends up meeting a fate: being involved... more>> in a mu*der that occurred at the entrance of her office building. After dealing with what she sees as an annoying, long pain of waiting in the afterlife, she returns as a ghost to the real world. In being a ghost, Jiang Xichu ends up seeing the distraught Chen Man and learns that she had been harboring feelings for her. She even brings home her urn, because Jiang Xichu has no close family members to have done so, so Chen Man is able to. Her feelings are so intense that Jiang Xichu's death resulted in her own su*cide a year later.

A twist! Jiang Xichu's fate had been messed up! The Heavens lost track of her when she slipped away and finally found her, so they are now able to offer her a restart, but she is still able to keep her memories of the time she died. Jiang Xichu is returned to two months before she "died" but at the cost of mental unwellness.

This plot is genuinely so good. The execution in the beginning was quite smooth. I didn't even feel like the twist was carried out in a corny way or something to scoff at. It was really well done! The concept of the title being this idea that someone moved her ashes in the first death but can also be applied to the second life, that Chen Man owns her ashes in both lives. It's beautiful. Who moved her ashes... it was Chen Man!

The realization that Jiang Xichu loved her back was quite good. That seeing Chen Man in the first life being so wrecked from her death made her realize she had feelings. The development of them getting closer now that Jiang Xichu was a hundred percent confident in reciprocated love. There was even a good questioning from Chen Man like, "She would usually scold me for this. What changed?" It was good! The storyline is the progression of their relationship as time reaches to the day where Jiang Xichu's first life ended.

But there were some... eh things about this novel. It was cute! but had some things.

There was this slight romanticization of nightmares from Jiang Xichu. Stress on slight. Maybe I've read too many novels where they portray mental illnesses poorly and I have high standards because of it. "Oh, come sleep in my room if you're scared. I'll hold you to sleep." and suddenly the nightmares are easier to deal with. Bleh.

Things progressed a bit too quickly, and I say this with taking in account that this is a quick and short novel. There wasn't much questioning on actions. It felt like... Well, the characters had personality, but it felt like their reactions weren't there enough. Like, "Oh, this happened? Okay." and moved on. Too quickly. Way too fast.

Jiang Xichu's sleeping gets to be a bit troubled, and Chen Man drugs her with sleeping aid, which was a bit... uh, okay. Not a fan of this drugging your significant other idea.

Other than that, it was cute. Their dynamic was adorable and funny, but I do wish there was more liveliness to their characters. It's hard to explain. It kind of felt like situations played out and they had the same repetitive reactions to it with no flavor. Their characters had developed, but it happened at the start of Jiang Xichu's second life, which is like chapter three. After that, they feel kind of flat.

One thing I noticed too was there was not even a description of their appearances... which is kind of disappointing. I wish the author included at least that.

I read the Pale Mirror translation. This translation was good, but I had a few nit picky things as someone who favors writing has. There was an excessive use of semi-colons when sentences should have just ended, making a difficult reading flow. Once you treat them like periods, it's easier to read, but it kind of bugged me while reading. I didn't check the other translation because I saw a review say they switched to check both and found PM to be the more desirable one. Translating is hard! I could never do it. Not tr*shing the translator. They did an excellent job. It wasn't hard to understand what was being said at all. Just something I'm nit picky about.

It's hard to say about recommendation to people. I definitely wouldn't tell someone to not read it, but I wouldn't be walking around telling people to read it if I was asked to recommend a modern yuri; it would not be the first to cross my mind. But it was a cute read! A swift modern story read. <<less

Translator here:

I rate this novel 8/10; it's a romcom and has fluff and mutual love between the characters after the first 2-3 chapters of heartbreak which makes MC fully appreciate FL and willing to have an open relationship with her.

I can see why others who read the raws felt the ending was lacking, but I think the author was in a rush to finish the novel. The ending does end with them being happy and it doesn't feel like too much plot hole as it explains a couple of... more>> thing and FL realization that she can't live without MC and she is her forever.

Would say that the last chapter is too sudden of an ending, story needs epilogue for it to truly give readers satisfaction.

Edited:

Uhh... five star instead of 4 star on accident. Woops. <<less

I really liked this one. Without spoiling anything, the expectations and situations were well executed, and the translator did a good job of conveying the tone of the story. Honestly, the only problem I could find was that the world building was VERY flimsy, but that's to be expected from such a short story.

I don't know if it's worth 5/5, but it's definitely worth around 4/5. I'm rating it 5/5 simply because most of the yuri on this site is tr*sh, so that automatically upgrades the rating of everything that's... more>> not tr*sh. <<less

Both the MC and FL were reborn but at different times. The MC had a slight mental disorder that was diagnosed as moderate anxiety and I think that that was portrayed well. It was very sweet and while it feels a little unfinished, it's a great novel.

A short and sweet story.

This story reminds me to live and cherish the present.

Furthermore, If you have feelings for someone, just gather courage and confess even if that person is your best friend. I had done that and felt much better even when it was a rejection. I had felt more free than when I had to keep that hidden. Time heals wounds and dilutes feelings.

The FL had kept such feelings hidden for years, but she ended up losing the person she loved without that person knowing anything. Rebirth will... more>> never happen in real life for you to redo your mistakes. <<less

probably one of the best shoujo-ai novel I've read. It's not too complicated, there's a lot of feelings, the characters are interesting and the story itself is interesting. Just the "paranormal" side was a bit too far-fetch though.

all in all, if you like Girls love, go for it, it's short and nice :)

A short lovely story of two friends who are everything to each other in life. And in death they discover they could have been so much more. The characterizations are good. Its too short for proper world building. Still the after life and living world were both interesting. The romance was great-even when mixed with unrealistic almost obsessive levels of feeling. It wasn't used to torture or harm their person. I recommend if you are up for a story of grief and second chances. It has a sweetly funny ending.

There are only few Yuri Novels that are actually good and this one is it.

I enjoyed it very much. It was fluff and emotional at once. Though I felt it was too rushed but I think it was still perfect.

A quick and heartwarming read! It executes the pining and requited unrequited love tropes quite well. The protagonist and love interest are very realistic and I am a big fan of their dynamic and relationship in general. My only complaint is how abrupt the ending seems to be. It does tie everything nicely and it did not affect how much I loved the rest of the story, but it seemed as though the author was rushed into finishing everything in that chapter. Despite wishing we had a couple of extras... more>> I was satisfied with how the CP is at the end of the novel and I'm sure I'll be rereading this in the future!

Spoiler

About MC's change of behavior in order to get along with FL, I really appreciated how she could still be herself: she only had to learn how to manage her temper and that's the sort of effort one must into a relationship. Her love for FL is genuine and it isn't born out of obligation.

And 5 stars to the translator as well. <<less

It's hard to find a good yuri novel so I'm glad to find this one. It's a short one with a good short story. Yes, it looks like it's rushed, but it's expected from a novel with no more than 20 chapters. Still a good read though.

I loved it. It's a short read, but it really stirred my heart. The beginning was very angsty, but it led into some really nice romantic development later. The set-up of the whole story was really interesting, but don't be fooled. It's only important for the set-up and the actual content is a case of lesbian pining and wanting to fix their regrets. It moved my heart, and that's all I need to give it a five star review.

Its a good read for a short series. Its lighthearted, warm and fluffy. Reading just reminds me of why I don't really like tsunderes, unlikely most portrayals, its frustrating af to even start a relationship with a tsundere, especially the ones who are damn stubborn and tsun 99% of the time. That kind of dynamic only works if the other party is really emotionally perceptive/sensitive and not dense. Being a tsundere might have its appeal but... its better to be just plain honest because you never know what may happen... more>> in life. Better to live without regrets. Thank goodness Jiang took the initiative. <<less

this was a very cute and (relatively) light read! A great quarantine time filler. I read it in chinese and it was so funny and sweet :,) I agree with the fact that after they got together the ending seemed a little bit rushed, but it wasn't detrimental to my reading experience and overall i'd definitely recommend it!

I'm not much of a feels person, and this story has a lot of those moments, but it does have the funny parts of typical romcoms and they are enjoyable.

The story lost some luster to me a few chapters after they got together, in my opinion the funniest moments were on the way to their relationship, but it does have development and a major enemy to to beaten: the insecurity of the day of the tragedy. I, for one, didn't quite enjoy the ending, and this left me with the... more>> impression that the story should have ended not long after they got together.

If you're in mostly for the comedy, like me, it is a neat one until that part, and for how much time you invest, it is worthwhile to finish it. Bonus for being well written and well translated. <<less

A good short read. Plot is simple, romance is pretty sweet. There were some cliche drama about MC's step mother but it was quickly dealt with by the awesome big boss chen man.

At first I though that the characters of both the leads were hardheaded due to how the novel started, but it was actually quite different. Chen Man is more on the white lotus side while Jiang Xichu's character was pretty similar to the one in description.

the novel ended where it started, the day the mu*der happened. It's quite... more>> poetic if you think about it.

Spoiler

MC didn't try to save anyone who died due to the mu*der except for herself, it was selfish but understandable. She was warned not to change other people's fate or she would receive misfortune.

Read from Pure Love Translations/Novice Translations. Superb.

A very sweet short story with angsty moments that made me tear up. The angst is because of almost lost love and not because of drama.

I won't spoil much cause it's so short but its a must read! I love it! It would be even better if it was longer with more fleshed out personalities and backstories for the two lead characters. Despite that I have no complaints as the story did deliver.

It's a good short read. The relationship between the couple is pretty cute, even before the accident happened lolz. It's clear that Secretary Jiang cares about her which is why she scolds Chen Man a lot. It's kinda funny seeing Jiang Xichu hold back the urge to scold and fight her because she wants them to live together peacefully haha. Just fluffy and sweet stuff.

This would also be a good novel to recommend to those who are just starting to read baihe, highly recommend. Not a lot of drama or... more>> complications. Just two characters in love. Although it did felt rushed so this could've been solved if the author extended the story for one more chapter, the ending was still satisfying. <<less

There's def tears but it's def got that dokidoki vibe.

While devoted FL is so hesitant sp put MC has to chase. They're long time friends and coworkers and I think MC can be read as aro or smwhr on the a-spectrum.

So short! The story was light and sad but it was a happy ending! There's hints of a take away trauma from the scene that Jiang Xichu witnessed after her death but she was sent to a therapist by Chen Man, you know what this is? A real keeper. Chen Man, you know, harbored unrequited love for years but she did not take advantage of Jiang Xichu at her weakest. Chen Man is also cool! She can slam you down with words and facts- the way she made Jiang Xichu's... more>> stepmother be banned within the perimeters of her company? Gold.

Chen Man is adorable, truly. She's a pingpong ball of anxiety and insecurity but ayee, I think they both would be on their way to healing after all they all have the cards now. They both have the knowledge of what transpired and what stressed each other out. Now that I think about it, she's a human disaster too based on what Jiang Xichu said. Huehue, I'm kind of scared for her in the first two chapters tbh.

Spoiler

I feel a little complicated. It might be a little bit blur because I'm still at loss whether Jiang Xichu fell in love with Chen Man or did she only do that due to guilt and indebtedness.

In support for this observation is when Jiang Xichu was internal monologuing the fact that she realized she did not owe her step-mother anything and at the same time, she said "Only Chen Man is the person I owe".
