A ruthless man, an indomitable soul, and an entanglement that was wrong.

Four years ago, she sent him to jail and was only appeased when he was executed.

Four years later, he dragged her into hell. Despite seeing her hurt, his resentment failed to subside. This was a carefully prepared revenge, yet a relentless one. Fu Shenxing had always thought that He Yan would be in his palm.

Ultimately, who is the prey? Look in front, don’t fantasize about the gentleman’s soft-heartedness. Look behind, don’t expect the heroine to let go.

Let us be clear : this is not a love story.
This is a very harsh novel. The author wrote it with the idea of protesting against all of those ceo novels where the r*pe victime falls in love with her assaillant and forgives him like it's nothing (cf : Rolling Love that really traumatized me)

Spoiler

In here, the victime gets r*ped several times (and even gets threatened with a video) and is forced to leave her beloved husband and to live with one of her rapists, the one who orchestrated it all but she never forgives him or falls for him. She may get kinda attached to him or get used to be him at some point (though it seems to be more out of survival) but not once, she forgets everything he's put her through (even though she's sometimes so emotionally broken and exhausted that she considers forgetting it all, and just letting days go, allowing her jailer to have her and even pretending she likes him : however, we quickly realize she's a fighter and so, even if she's tired, even if she's down, she'll always get up again, always remember that she can't live like that, live with someone she hates and lie to herself that she's okay with living with the one who ruined her life and had her r*ped, even though he now loves her. Like I said, she's a fighter)
and this is where we understand the origin of the title : « Who is the prey? »

At first, it seems the female lead, He Yan, is the prey of the psychological torture imposed by Fu Shen Xing. And then, things slowly start to change, at least, on her jailer's side. Fu Shen Xing slowly falls for her, and in that way, he actually becomes her prey, or at least, prey of the love he has for her. But it's too late : he's hurt her so much that not only she could never love him but she can never forget the scars that are in her heart and will always hate him.
And this is his punishment : not only he falls in love, and therefore has a weakness, but he must now live with the pain of knowing the one he loves will never love him back, and with the guilt of knowing that he only has himself to blame for that.
He's now not only prey of his love for her because she doesn't love him and never will but also of his guilt and torment to have hurt, sullied and shamed the one he now loves. He may have her, have her body but he'll never have her heart or her trust and what's worst, he knows that he did everything to deserve her treatment. Sometime, the pain of knowing she doesn't love him, even hates him, and the remorse almost make him crazy and for us readers, that feels good. When she's kidnapped by the first man to whom he sold her in the past, a pe*vert and a sadistic, he clearly realizes how much he hurt her and how impossible it is for her to love him : when he finds her being tortured by him, full of scars, after hours of crazy worries, her first reaction is to remind him that two years ago, he almost forced her to go through this for his personal pleasure. However, at that time, he didn't care and even rejoiced of her suffering. For the 1st time, reality strikes him, although he had always known but he always tried to forget, to forget that this woman he's now very in love with, he's had her raped several times, r*ped her himself, used her r*pe to threaten and torment her in every way possible, forced to prostitution and even threatened her loved ones to force her to sully herself. But at that time, he didn't care. Now that he loves her, of course it doesn't feel the same to see her sufferings due to all of that and to remember what he did. All this time, he had tried to escape and forget this guilt, hoping everyone (especially He Yan, the victim) would forget, because not only it made him crazy with shame and remorse (nothing to be proud, after all, to have done all of that to a woman to a woman when you're now claiming for her love) but also because he thinks that if He Yan were to forget, she might love him : but now, he can no longer be blind about his guilt. But his current feelings don't matter : the wrong is done. Now, he's confronted the fact that he did that and unlike him who tried to forget it all, hoping she would forget it too, she had to live with this. Fu Shen Xing must live with the fact that he had the woman he loved r*ped, tortured, sold, aborted (yes, at some point, she was pregnant with her husband and he forced her to abort, out of jealousy, even though he was already in love with her) and that he's the one who gave her all of her sufferings when he now wishes to make her happy.
i will give this a 3/5 because this is very hard and angsty and I'm not into that
and there's also one thing that I hated about the end : He Yan keeps Fu Shen Xing's baby. Not because she wants it, not because she can't do otherwise, but because her husband (the one she truly loves) convinces her to do so because he thinks that this would be wrong.

That really annoyed me. I know China doesn't have the same opinion about abortion than us, even though it's legal, because they consider it to be immoral, to be mu*der but I cannot force myself to understand that.

In my opinion, a woman should not have to keep a child she doesn't want, and especially not the child of a man who r*ped and tortured her just because society doesn't approve. A woman's body is her own, she should do whatever she wants with it : forcing her into s*x is already unacceptable, forcing her into having a baby she doesn't want and who was born from this forced-relationship-that-shouldn't-have-happened is also unacceptable to me. If she wants to have the child, let her be, if she doesn't, then also let her be.

nevetheless, I give this a good note because even though I hated it (too hard for me), this is a good writing, and the author fulfilled his goal by showing how toxic this kind of relationships are and that they shouldn't be shown as acceptable or romantic. This was also original : she showed a toxic game of strength and madness between two people and we can't help but want to know what will happen, how this will end. Will the female lead get through this hell or will she be destroyed ? Or will she fall in love with her jailer, like we usually expect it.

and when we see her finally getting out of this hell, we are finally relieved and we have no mercy for Fu Shen Xing who finds himself alone and unloved (I think he even deserved worst).
this is a bittersweet ending : Fu Shenxing now regrets but accepts to let He Yan go and even though He Yan will never be the same, never forget, she is finally free and can now take the time to rest, to learn to live with her scars and accept these with the help of someone she loves and who loves and treats her well

[collapse]

i wouldn't recommend this to those who love happy stories and who are very sensitive. To be honest, I even regret having read because even though I acknowledge the talent of the author, I don't like this kind of angsty story.
I've read it because I will watch the drama adaptation for Peng Guan Ying but I really hope this drama won't be faithful to the novel (and I actually don't think it will : the drama seems more focused on crime, detective and action than on the toxic relationship between Fu Shenxing and He Yan. Moreover, where the female lead gets r*ped by the male lead, they tend to censure it, thank God for that !)

Finished reading the novel and currently waiting updates in manhua. This was also adapted to a live drama. It got a cool trailer but I have no time to watch all 44 episodes. This is NOT a love story. This is a DARK PSYCHO THRILLER. When you thought everything is ok, switch PoV, it's not. When you thought he already trust the heroine, switch PoV, he does not. When you thought it's already game over.... it's not. See how FL traverse this mad man's ruthless game with very little hope... more>> (there are times she's almost at the brink of insanity), deceipt, and help from people who truly cares for her.
Spoiler

I'm very much satisfied with the ending. The villain's (that jerk, bastard, a*****e) regrets at the end is 10/10 angst.

The male lead is tr*sh. Complete utter tr*sh, but that's the point of the story. The female lead never forgets, never forgives even for a moment and that's why it's such a good story. She's smart and noble yet vindictive in all the right ways. She never misplaces her anger and pain or most importantly, her love like most abused female leads (cough cough abandoned empress). It's empowering and gut wrenchingly satisfying seeing her use what he's done to her against him.
Spoiler

Because he ended up loving her in the process of his cruel game, he wanted to give up half way and forget everything he's ever done to her (the gang r*pe, prostitution, s*xual abuse). There's a scene where she looks at him and tells him to disinfect himself before her because he's dirtied himself with the touch of her friend. He gets upset tells her he's never touched her friend, and only kissed her in the time they spent apart since she escaped. He didn't know it was her friend at the time, so how can she think he's "soiled and disgusting" as if she's never kissed anyone. She looks at him mockingly and tells him it's okay if he finds her disgusting too —after all he made her a prostitute and forced her to sleep with his friends. He panics, not wanting to think about what he did because now it hurts him to think about her being touched by anyone other than him. He covers her mouth with his hand and apologizes repeatedly calling himself a bastard. She was so powerful in this part, cause her eyes were cold while his were sad and love driven. She's beaten him in every sense of the word, to the point where he willingly lets her deceive him.

[collapse]

This was one of my favorite scenes, mostly because I love groveling and regret tropes. So if you wanna read a story where the female lead is actually smart and the evil ass male lead gets what he deserves in the end (by that I mean nothing but loneliness and pain) this story is it.

I must admit that the frightening amount of r*ape, physical and emotional abuse in this work has a way to overshadow all its good qualities in my eyes (though it might not be depicted as graphically as in other works - which makes it all the more realistic to me).

Some readers have argued that if one were to ignore it all, one would realize just how excellent this work were. And that is most probably the case. But the abuse, especially the s*exual abuse that includes everything from gang r*ape... more>> to forced pros*titution, passing through revenge p*orn (without forgetting all the forced abortions), is not something that I can easily disregard... especially since it is very central, if not the very origin, of the plot.

Obviously, because of all of the above, my 1/5 rating should be taken with a grain of salt. I was left shaken and disgusted by the sheer diversity and creativity in the means of torture described here. It was jumping into my face chapter, after chapter, after chapter. But had I been stronger and able to stomach all of the violence, I might have given this a 5/5.

Well, a 4/5. The ending seemed quite unnatural. It just did not seem to fit the story. You are left on your hunger. I believe that both those who dislike this work as much as those who worship it could feel that sort of emptiness that is left once everything wraps up. The ending felt rushed and surreal, in my personal opinion.

Besides that, there is one thing I would like to commend this work for... and it has to do with what I dislike about this novel, ironically. It puts r*ape, gang r*ape and s*exual coercion at the center of the work. 62% of women have had r*ape fantasies at least once in their lifetime (a r*ape fantasy does not mean a woman desires to be r*aped, fantasies do not equal reality). And for a long time, women were getting their dose from yaoi. Because of the fact that depicting such scenes in a heteros*exual setting would have implied that the cartoonists and authors condoned actual, real-life s*exual violence. At times even risking to provoke s*exual violence against themselves in their respective industries. However, the Chinese female authors completely disregarded this idea, taking advantage of the anonymity their pseudonyms and internet portals confer them to live the fantasies of 62% of the female population out in the open. Knowing how harsh China's laws can be towards what they consider to be p*ornography, it took quit some courage to start this wave.

And I honestly believe that part, maybe even a big part, of this novel's popularity in its home-country stems from the depiction of this particular type of violence (and that is ok because fantasies do not equal reality), though it may not be as graphic as in other works.

So how fair is that 1/5 of mine? Not very fair, I admit it. Or, at least, not very objective. Nonetheless, the trauma and anguish this story has caused me does not permit me to give a higher mark.

I sorry.-. <<less

This was honestly a rough psychological ride with a strong female lead. I would've rated this higher if it was a bit shorter as there were plenty of unneeded parts. Altho this is shorter than most chinese novels, the story just dragged too long for me. There were some parts that, when removed, wouldn't change the plot one bit.

I loved the story, characters and the message. While this is with very violent and disturbing descriptions I love the fact author condone those actions never justifying or should I opposite of common romantisizing of abuse. three women romantically involved with ML in story mainly. He yan, her bestie and daughter of police officer. Among them he yan is outstanding, While her bestie normall one and lastly younger and s*upid girl she represent all the s*upid female leads in cnovels and get the realistic ending fit to them.

I know many don't like the fact he yan continuing pregnancy. But I think it makes sense. They were (he yan and hubby) were pushed to edge of their morality by ml, they became vengeful hate filled individuals who themselves don't wanna become if not for their arduous journey of survival. They were losing their selves. Last thing they wanna feel they are as bad as ml. So they decided to make a different choice to be different from ml.

I read the manhua first and decided to look for the original novel. I can only understand basic conversational Chinese so I had to rely on an online translator to get through the text.

First of all, the relationship in this novel is completely toxic, but I don't it's intended to be a romance. The (twisted) love is pretty one sided and never reciprocated. I'd label it a psychological thriller more. Without spoiling, I'll just say readers will be satisfied with the female lead's response to everything the male lead does.... more>> He is truly one of the most despicable male leads I've read and anyone that romanticizes his actions is not right in the head.

The -1 star is for the obvious plot holes as well as how overpowered the male lead is written, especially in his ability to monitor others. I don't think even the secret service would be able to pull off some of the stuff he does lol. There was also one important character whose betrayal kind of came out of nowhere for me. It just seemed too convenient that suddenly the female lead had someone on the inside that helped her when she was seemingly stuck at a dead end. <<less

Overall rating: 6.5/10

What does it mean to be a strong woman? Unwavering persistence, indomitable wit, or fatal charms? In the case of this novel, a strong woman simply just needs to be described as such and the reader should believe it.

"Who is the Prey" or 《掌中之物》 (lit. "Object in the palm") is a story centered around the subversion of several tropes: the tyrannical CEO (霸道总裁), Stockholme romance, and the weak female protagonist. While its attempts to subvert these tropes are commendable, the storytelling itself comes out very flat.

The story is... more>> good at grabbing your attention. It has all the essential elements that make up a thrilling story about a young woman in life-or-death situations, trying to bear the weight of the world while fighting against an abuser that is hell bent on destroying every aspect of her life. However, there are many problems with the writing.

The pacing is wildly inconsistent and starts to drag in the middle until the end. Character development is even more bizarre. There are many interesting characters introduced throughout the story, but none of them are given any depth (except Chen Heguo to an extent). I would even argue to say that our main character, He Yan, barely undergoes any change whatsoever. She started off as a strong, unwavering, spiteful woman, and she ended as just that. Nothing fundamental changes about her (and her husband, who just serves as a plot device due to having no character development).

It is because of this that I would argue that the true main character of the story is our male protagonist, Fu Shenxing. Throughout the journey of this book, we get to see his actions, thoughts, and attitudes change. By the end of it, we even develop sympathy for him in spite of everything he has done. He is the character with the most complexity and depth. Contrast him with He Yan, who is ever only depicted on the side of justice. In the author's attempt to write He Yan as an unwavering, strong woman who will not fall in love with Fu Shenxing, they made the grave mistake of making He Yan's character uninfluenced by Fu Shenxing. As a result, the only character in the story that is relatable and feels like a genuine person is him, and not our female protagonist (who is depicted as being a sub-perfect person from beginning to end).

Spoiler

If we were to count all the instances that Fu Shenxing has assaulted and terrified He Yan, then you can say that he did have an impact on her on the visceral level. The lack of change I am referring to here is the absence of any difference in attitudes or morals due to reflection.

[collapse]

Overall, this story is an entertaining read and a breath of fresh air for the hetero romance genre. If all you're looking for is a fun story on trope reversals, then I would recommend checking this out. However, if you're looking for a novel that compels to you to reflect on the gray areas of morality or a story that introduces a breakthrough in the "strong" female protagonist archetype, this is a pass. <<less

This is a suspense writing. We want to know more and more at least the ending.

Nonetheless, the plot is terrible. Teriible. O said twice.

I don't like this troupe and will never will with the mess up setting. So, I want to give 3 star, but omit one for the ironic setting.

I know it’s a great novel and I didn’t know about all these abuse and r*pe when I first start reading it, I couldn’t reading more so I directly went to spoiler and now I regret it BECAUSE I am the type to overthink and putting myself in her place kinda person and now my brain hurts and I feel depressed and traumatized but what I want to say is that I really really respect her husband who was in her side till the end even after all the things... more>> that happened. (From manhua, when the abuse happened the first time I wished she told her husband ik it’s easier said than done but like they could move or get police help or smth idk she might have kept quiet for her husband sake as well but still the fact that the abuser made her miscarry her child with her husband makes me want to chain him and cut his d*ck off slowly without giving him anesthesia.)

AGAIN DON’T please DONT read this if you have weak heart like me like PLEASE!!! Save yourself from mental trauma and don’t regret later like me!!! <<less
