What if you have a smart, playful and faithful boyfriend?

When dating, he said: “I have no interest in these sort of things. But if you kiss me every ten minutes, I am willing to do any sort of silly things with you.

When jealous, he said: “Compared to me, this man had s*upid written all over him. The only good point he has is that he knows you are a good woman too.

When making love, he said: “Although I have no experience, my intelligence and ability to learn far surpass normal people. Just to add, I am very observant as well.

When proposing, he said: “I have no words to express myself. But if I have to sum everything up – I love you with all of my wisdom and life.

I took him from a lonely world, back to the warmth of the bustling city.

While he drags me from a quiet and ordinary life to a exciting and unpredictable life.

Love Me If You Dare (When He Comes Close Your Eyes) began when JY, a soon-to-be graduates, freelanced for BJ, a young professor that often worked together to solve crimes with police and FBI. Who knew that something that was planned to end in a short time turned into a “lifelong agreement” between the two? But their love story had to thread a twisted path, as their works brought them to meet mu*derers and psychopaths.

It’s an awesome novel of romance-suspense genre. The characters, plot, pace, development, narrative, everything were great.... more>> Well, this is Ding Mo’s work, so need not say too much, just read and you’ll see how solid this novel is. You could even feel the author had done her research well. It definitely deserves a five star rating or more.

There are two things that stand out from this novel: the characters and the cases. Both are fascinating and uncommon. The male protag with high-IQ low EQ and the smart female protag combi was consistently developed with continuous ups-and-downs along their journey. You’ll be laughing funny at their antics, also confused and worried when they’re in danger; all in all, extremely relatable.

The only problem I’ve got is that... the cases in this novel brought back my trauma when reading an old manga titled “MPD Psycho” years ago. There were bloody tortures, mutilation on living persons... well, not all the gruesome details were written, and it’s certainly not as mind-bending as MPD Psycho, there were also funny, sweet and ‘sweaty’ moments, it’s actually well-balanced... but you’d better be warned. <<less

This series needed more romance which is the main reason why it turned out to be disappointed as heck. First of all, the synopsis of the novel is misleading, when you read it, it gives you an idea how the male lead of the story acts when he is in relationship/love, it gives you hawty, proudy and egostic expression which is true, but only till the first half of the story. Our Male lead's personality takes 180* turn when he starts going out with our protagonist, he starts treating her... more>> like princess out of nowhere. I am not saying that is wrong love changes person, but it should come one step a time, although he still treats everyone pretty much everyone the same, and the lines that our male lead said in the synopsis, he never said those in the actual story except the top line which he said only once during the time when story was going through fast-forward pace of their relationship.

-The 2nd major beef I got with this novel is author never sheds light on MC's past clearly.
Spoiler

We come to realize bit and pieces of it, but some of the misunderstandings were never clear like the fact that did his father really killed his own mother infront of him?

[collapse]
and MC decides midway through the story never to talk about this to his GF because it makes her cry, WHY? These are one of those moments where your relationships deepens as you tell each other about your dark past and lick each other's wound and some psychological support. In the end, he never does it, although our female protagonist realizes some of it through "different means", but we never saw a moment of it because most of it happened in the background.

-The third reason as I mentioned above is romance which I will go in detail now. The main characters starts going out somewhere in the middle of the story, yet the lovey dovey moment they share can be count single handely (No, I am not gonna count the generic "take it slow, it is my first time" shoujo style s*x scenes"). I am talk about dates, trips (where no third wheels or cases are involved), some small cute fights out of jealousy. Although, MC does get jealous a lot, but he never tells it to her directly. Oh that reminds me, the worst part when our female protagonist got suddenly kissed by her childhood friend in the airport when he was just about to leave. Yea, another typical shoujo scene, but what infuriates me. She is completely fine with it and neither she told his BF (male lead) about this. I know I have read a lot shoujo genre and this is really common as heck, but WTF? If someone kisses my GF and she didn't tell me. I would go mad as hell! After that scene, there was never mention of it which still bothers me to this day.

:The only reason why I gave it two starts because of the Extras which had much MORE ROMANCE THAN THE WHOLE NOVEL COMBINED. Do yourself a favor and read something like Lovely Complex, Kare Kano, Mars, Faster Than a Kiss or Horimiya. <<less

First of all, I love Prof. Bo Jinyan. He is arrogant and self-centered *high IQ low EQ*, even when meeting the Heroine, he still is. More, actually. In a way where he is selfish/possessive.. and... pe*verted.. when it comes to the girl. “She is mine” Enough said. I love him. Okay. Love him.

Jian Yao is lovable. She may be a bit scared, a damsel in distress sometimes but it can’t be helped, it’s a different “world” after all. Still, she is strong. She doesn’t let anyone protect her–standing by, watching,... more>> crying-is not her cup of tea.

Other than the romance element, mysteries and actions are breathtaking. It makes you fall on your seat. Cry. Be afraid. Cry more. Even turning you into a detective at one point. And cry again. + humors.. I laugh so hard, I cried.

All in all, 5/5. Now that the novel ended– chance that I will reread this in the future is 100%.

Update: I highly recommend the Chinese Drama, Love me if you dare. It follows the novel properly. Well, of course it's inevitable that there will be a few changes but it didn't disappoint me like the other novels adapted to drama.
And I especially love the actor of Bo Jinyan. So lovable. <<less

It is good for the most part but there is one case that bothered me so much that it inclined me to write a review which I never do... more>>
Spoiler

The FL is kidnapped and she was injected different drugs and hallucinogens and was supposedly whipped for numerous days. I get that she doesn't hate the ML for this which I would if I were in her situation cause imagine if you were held captive you should atleast began to lose hope and began to self doubt and self hatred plus blaming the world which she never do.

It's totally unrealistic and the worst part is that she's completely fine like she doesn't have any trauma or anything and goes on with her normal life after she was rescued. It's as if the author doesn't care about the FL mental health. Anyone who's a sane normal human would at least have trauma, nightmares... Etc but she doesn't. I can't comprehend that. It totally made me lose interest in the story.

[collapse]

Ps: my ratings would be 3 but I accidentally cl**ked 4 and I can't change it <<less

I dropped this novel. The story is a big yawn with bucketloads of sexism.

Not every FL needs to be the gold standard of interesting, remarkable and cool, but it's a sin to make her the perfect example of a female archetype that perpetuates negative gender stereotype. Even more unbearable is the ML's negative masculinity.

He actually says, "[It] looks like our frequent and passionate s*x is not affecting your work. You are as smart and efficient as usual. Good. Keep it up." Barf!

Why she excuses his condescending behavior and offensive remarks... more>> as "immature", I will never know.

Only Chen Mo, the super cute tortoise who is sometimes the innocent sidekick, gets 5 stars. <<less

First of all, don't let the synopsis fool. It might come out as a typical romantic story with cold ML but it's more than just that. I absolutely fall in love with the couple. I registered here just to post this review so that people can give this novel the chance it deserves.

There's mystery, comedy, romance, thriller etc etc. It will never disappoint you. I don't if this can be a spoiler or not but I hide it anyway:

Spoiler

The ML is shown in first few chapters as a cold man who shuts himself in his home and when in public he comes out as a creepy dude who's background is mysterious. But as you further read the interactions between the two you will find him absolutely cute and adorable. His personality and character is quite fresh.

[collapse]

I swear you guys this novel will keep you hooked till the end. You will find yourself unable to keep it down. Do give it a chance.

And an advice while reading the novel ignore the comment section, because as many of the readers have watched the drama of this novel, they might reveal something unintentionally which might not be true as the plot is little different from the drama as I observed the comments about the drama. <<less

Very very good read!!

It's not the 'The moment I saw you, I pampered you right away.'

ML was aloof, won't even let her use his jacket but the gradual increase in their intimacy can be seen. And slowly but surely, you can see that ML doesn't want to lose MC by his side. He keeps on persuading her to be his assistant even though it's out of her degree. But dayumm, the moment they got into a relationship, I want to comment on ML: Wolf. HE IS SUCH A WOLF. SHAMELESS.... more>> But that makes him even more endearing, he wants to kiss or to be kissed at least every 5 mins. He wants a lot of things that married couples have. HAHAHAHAHA He's low EQ but a natural born lover.

Before, I would have rated this as 4.9/5, because I was kind of dissapointed with MC. In the beginnjng, she showed so much promise in her observational skills but after a lot of cases, she hasn't really contributed much but keeps on asking for ML's views. It's reasonable but at least a few skills should have upgraded after all those cases. BUT THEN BOOM!!!

Spoiler

The su*cide/goodblye letter she wrote. Even though she was tortured, under drugs, and was physically and mentally in pain, she still wrote a letter that hinted about the killer. It was so dayum awesome. Only Bo Jinyan could decipher her clues so it was unnoticed by the killer.

[collapse]

That move was like that one guy who was kept prisoner during the vietnam war and was then later interviewed by the vietnam government to send to the US and advertise that the prisoners were treated fairly and good. But that was not really the truth. They were tortured. But he can't say it during the broadcast due to the guns pointing at him behind the cameras. So he used his eyes to convey the truth by morse code.

Due to that move, I give it a 5/5. MC is so brave and smart at that time. Really like this story! Idk if I'll read the sequel especially since this is already happy ending. But maybe I will because I really like how the couple show their love. It's still not fully translated but maybe in a few weeks, it will. Only a few chapters left. <<less

This one of my new favorite complete novel. Its so sweet plus nice to see balance of both romance and work 'career' in their lives. Plus their romance moment is so sweet that you can tell how much both love each other. Positive:
-No s*upid drama love between MC! Like no third party or evil family bother them as what most novel does.
-Real good process romance building up
-Good amount mystery of case not just one!
-Female MC is very talent in her job but as she learn new... more>> from Male lead. Negative:
-Some case can be much for some people but that what is crime mystery novel. <<less

Loved it. (I have no idea why it was in my "to read" list for soooo long)

Its is dramatic, sweet, interesting and a little dark. Overall, its enjoyable and entertaining.

I won´t spoil anything, so I´ll just say that the ML is damn awesome, MC is really likeable and the combination between criminal cases and love is my just twisted cup of tea with a great rythm.

Recommed.

BJY clearly deserves to be the male protagonist of all times. As always, the summary of the story doesn't nearly prepare us for the epic content of this novel.

Clearly a 5star novel. I'm not sure I'll be able to write a review without spoilers so I just want to say this is one of these novels that make you feel like you are watching an HD movie on a giant screen. It's a whole new level of enjoyment. The balance between the genres (romance, psychological) is so well done... more>> and the whole package is just wow.

Definitely a story I'll want to re-read <<less

Maybe this is not everyone’s cup of tea. This is crime thriller mixed with fluffy romance. The crime scene is sadistic and gruesome, while the romance fluffy and a little bit HOT. I love this piece, so for everyone like me who likes a little bit sherlock holmes nuisance, you should read this.

ML is a low EQ egocentric weirdo, but sweet and honest. 1st day he confessed already got french kiss and tried to jump to her bed, LOL. Their romance is slow then grow in lightning pace. MC is... more>> smart independent woman, kind of MC who loved by the reader. Story telling is smooth, and translation is great! Love it so much. <<less

Romance and crime investigation is just my cup of tea. Thrilling mysteries and crime investigations with a sprinkle of fluffy romance with a bit of snusnu to spice things is just perfect for my taste. While some say the romance is pretty fast, I'd say it was quite nicely paced though. Not too fast to get you "the f- happened?!" nor too slow to get you frustrated, the build up was done pretty nicely, which is alr good for a supposedly "low EQ" male lead. I also enjoyed the slighty spicy elements included, which makes this story all the more appealing to me since it depicted a realistic mature romance (unlike some who has leads in mid 20s but they acts like pre-pubescent kids).

To be honest tho, I enjoyed the mystery parts more than the romance. It was really much more exciting and thrilling. I really liked them solving together and seeing Jian Yao learning to be a great detective at the same time. I'd say this one is a pretty good read for its short length, though there are areas it lacked and needed more focus (i.e, Bo Jinyan's past, Jian Yao's childhood incident, the origin of Flower Cannibal & Bo Jinyan's thing), I enjoyed reading it.

It’s just a so-so. I like the cases more than the romance. It’s like a downgrade version of Sherlock Holmes if Watson was actually his lover.

The romance moved too fast for me even though they only became a couple in the middle of the story. There wasn’t much building of FL’s character for me. I know not every FL has to be this strong badass woman but the author makes it like half of her personality is with ML. And like a review I read, it did

And the ML. The... more>> usual unfiltered, narcissistic genius ML. He’s alright and I like that he pursued FL after he realized his feelings and didn’t go for the pining trope. If the author only implied that he’s some type of a neurodivergent which isn’t really not impossible if he’s really a genius, then maybe it will make more sense why he doesn’t understand social cues or talks unfiltered about their s*x life (not gonna lie I usually laugh at this part. At least they’re commutative.)

What’s not cool are the stereotypes on female. The usual “women are emotional” and whatever.

Spoiler

Ziyu slept with 17 year old girl when he’s 20??? The hell I liked him! I read on his chapter and I’m disliking him more and more. Ok he brings a gorgeous girl to the birthday of the girl he loves and has ambiguous relationship. He’s 19 at this point. Of course girl will misunderstand and find some time alone. Another boy comforts her and ask her to be his gf. Ziyu enters and beat the crap out of the boy. Then they make out. Like the fak? If I knew I would have skipped this.

[collapse]

I wrote this after I read the last chapter but not the extras. Should’ve read it all before rating. I would have given 2 stars just for that. Maybe even 1.

The girl has an english name of Joe (yeah I don’t understand either) and she was amazing though minus her crappy choice in man. If you don’t want to read Ziyu’s side story but wants to know her ending, I got you.

Spoiler

She got kidnapped by a guy who’s fiancée got injured by a robber. The robber also got injured and they both get sent to the hospital. Robber lives and fiancée dies. So kidnapper took the girls that are directly or indirectly related to the medical team who saved the robber because in his mind, they should’ve let him die and saved his fiancée instead.

Joe is not even related to the case. The only reason she was kidnapped was because she’s Ziyu’s gf who was the most outstanding doctor at that hospital.

The one directly related were killed while the indirect one were given a choice since the police are closing in. He will let the others go if one of them went with him to die at sea. Of course the other girls are quiet but Joe volunteered to save other girls.

[collapse]

Another let down in the story. Part 2 of I should’ve read before rating.

Spoiler

Training you 10 year old son to be a detective?? 10 year old??? You’re already exposing him to that???

[collapse]

It’s not that deep but I wish the author/translator used another word for “blushed”. A chapter wouldn’t go by without “blush” in it. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you read/are reading the story. <<less

Love this.

This book tells the story of a genius crime psychologist and his relationship with an ordinary but quite attentive girl.

There are little details revealed in each written word so I suggest don't binge-read. The story itself will start to get interesting and tense as it comes to an end and I am very satisfied with the ending. I didn't expect the storyline to be like that, and I have to admit there were a few knots that doesn't break down completely.

Some readers said the ML are cute but for... more>> me he is kind of freak/weirdo but his personality is really strong. As for the FL, maybe for the sake of story' progress or to give more thorough understanding about ML character for us readers, her personality keep changing (sometimes strong, sometimes s*upid, sometimes calm etc) so I can't grasped clearly what is her true personality. This is so far a weak point' from this novel.

Still I will recommend this book because this story deserves it. Happy reading.

The extra are really cute and funny so please read it, it will satisfy your romance craving heart. <<less
