When A Mage Revolts

Kubei was just an ordinary pencil and button pusher working a day job, hating his boss and making horrible speeches when one day he fell asleep after pushing an all-nighter. When he woke up, he was bound to a chair, facing three creepy robed women and in a body way too young and way too weak to be his own. As he slowly came to, he realized that he was no longer in the same universe as he was before. He had teleported to the Kingdom of Helius, where an all-powerful church rules its lands and wages war against the elusive group known only as Mages. Armed with an incredibly c*cky neural interface that just won’t shut up and his own sheer wit, our main character will find himself not just fighting to survive, but maybe even for something bigger than himself.

Real Score ☆☆☆ - 3.6
I didn't read this for a long time because of reviews about A.I. + my own conceptions. The A.I. the MC has isn't like any modern A.I. in that it isn't connected to anything other than the host, so obviously it won't evolve like a traditional Sci-Fi A.I. - Which is good. Unlike what the other reviews say, the A.I. does NOT actually do all that much, nor make any choices, it's simply a tool with perks and consciousness. I will say though, the A.I.... more>> is SO annoying in the beginning, but becomes much more silent later.

This novel starts off really slow but does pick up. I really enjoyed the atmosphere it created. If you can ignore plot holes (and there are many later in the story), then you'll eventually end up liking this novel. The MC is a little bit of psychopath for a modern day human, but not a serial killer. There is no harem so far which is nice. It's definitely about a mage that causes revolts.

All in all, not the best nor the worst... just around a 4.0 for my taste. Not as good as Warlock of the Magus World imo. <<less

TL;DR. Either you love it or hate it novel. I just write a review because it compelled me to drop it after 10 chapters. In a sense, this is quite amazing.

This is the first novel that I dropped after reading 10 chapters of it so it's worth to be reviewed as I usually give it like at least 50-100 chapters before dropping something (the usual introductory phase). I know it's unjust but this is somehow so amazing that I just want to review it for my collection. From the statistic... more>> of the reviews, there are a lot of 1 stars and 5 stars which means this is either 'you love it or you hate it' novel. For me, the author managed to write something that compelled me so much to drop this, in a sense that's amazing. Some of the reasons why.

First, you can find the author as a character in this novel, the author is casting as the AI. I concluded this because the AI is too human like using try-too-hard annoying joke just to piss the MC off and break the story flow so it'd not end up so serious. Not to mention, the AI is mostly useless for the sake being a comedy element. Second, the author tried too hard to make a dark joke. The author wrote a huge chapter for backstory of a character to force it as a joke. That's really a lot of work for a forced joke. Third, the flow and the narration managed to bored me. I found it like reading a dull history book. These 3 are the major reasons why I dropped it. Then again like I said, it's either you love it or you hate it so it's just doesn't work for me <<less

Despite the comedy tag, do not expect to laugh. It's a transmigration story into a crapsack world where every character is dark, outright evil, broken, or simply s*upid. The MC takes on the world as the last option, and the AI leaps between plot armor asspulls and useless idiocy that someone thought to be amusing - and it isn't.

After 60 chapters, I haven't found a single sympathetic character, or a plotline that I though was engaging enough to justify wasting more time. Avoid.

This is great comedy. It makes fun of usual tropes in these kind of stories. It also has interesting story and characters, and good action now and then. MC gets a cheat which is almost useless yet funny AI.

It's also not clear-cut "church is bad, mages are good"-situation like in similar stories. Mages actually cause more harm to MC than the church, as they torture him and try to kill him several times. He still wants to become mage, not because he is dumb but because that's only route for... more>> power for him. <<less

Meet Benjamin, a boy who transmigrate from a regular Chinese guy.

from every story you read in a Chinese novels, you would expect a golden hand MC, every single danger come with an equivalent rewards in return + plot armors. But nope, not here. In here, our boy Benjamin (along with his uselessly smart-ass System) experience hell in every single moment, unexpected plot out of nowhere, improvise new ideas right on the spot, nothing ever go the way he expected, but in the end he still win along with his... more>> companion.

Overall this story is very enjoyable.

I find this novel to be fairly enjoyable. The AI is kinda annoying instead of funny, maybe the comedic factor is lost in translation. I really liked the main character for a while but he's starting to become more and more like every other psychopathic character that you see in most Chinese cultivation novels. In the beginning the MC had justifiable reasons to kill certain people but later on his reasons became flimsier and flimsier. How long until he kills someone just because they were in "his" seat at a... more>> bar? Yeah, I know, it won't get that bad because he's the MC instead of a fodder villain, but still... <<less

The MC accidentally slept on his Windows 10 laptop and woke up being transmigrated into another world. Unfortunately for MC, Windows 10 main feature, the personal assistant Cortana, has been embedded into his brain.

This novel revolves around how Cortana screws the MC over and over again as the MC desperately trying to live while going against a psychopath witch and a church that like to 'cleanse' people while being the troubled heir of an aristocratic family.

The story itself is just bang average, but combined with comedic MC's interactions with Cortana,... more>> this novel makes for a decent read.

This novel is a recommended read for any die-hard fans of Windows 10, Windows Phone, Xbox console or the Halo video game series. Especially the latter. Android or ChromeOS users should instead read the 'Help! Gooogle-sensei!!' novel, which being a JP novel, is way inferior to this novel.

For iOS/MacOS users, they should read Martial God Asura for an educational 'triggering' experience.

????from me as of chapter 54. <<less

This one's enjoyable for a lot of reasons, but a large part of it is that it's 300 chapters long by now and still hasn't descended into pure wish fulfillment. The MC has advantages without being OP, the plot seems to be advancing in a more or less rational direction, and there's no out-of-nowhere harem. Certainly worth reading!

A ton of the humor doesn't land.

The system is more annoying than funny, like having a poor system can be funny, but it needs to be aided by a MC that wouldn't otherwise need a system.

I get that this is a parody, but it's too weak. Tons of characters that aren't relatable. Too much humor for convenience.

Like not being able to absorb memories on transmigration is okay, having the system brief you is okay, but having the system forget to tell you important information to make you the joke is... more>> just dumb, not funny. Like maybe make the system just joke all the time, or read sizes, or do other s*upid stuff, but at least let the MC operate on something other than luck to progress through the plot.

MC even attempting magic is dumb. He should just stay home.

People rating this five stars probably like fart jokes.. <<less

Woah. That was such a ride. While I could nitpick here and there, I think the author still did a great job executing the story. I just didn’t like the ending that much.. It left me hanging. There’s no romance, which was completely okay. I wouldn’t wanna force a romance here tbh. Many lives has been lost, people died, suffered etc etc. The conclusion was satisfactory and I commend the author on that. Thank you for bringing in such a wonderful novel.

Since this story is new I won't give it 5 stars but the story so far has been really good. It is not a run of the mill story about the MC being OP right off the bat with some magical power. The system or (neural interface) is not much help to him so he is not very OP. The situations remind me a lot of "Release that Witch" but in this instance he can actually learn magic.

I don't know why people are giving this a bad rating. I guess... more>> they expect him to get every he needs right off the bat; It's not going to be like that. This is a harsh and real reality in this story. <<less

This is a mash up of the start of coiling dragon and warlock of the magus world that is more of a satire on why bad things keep happening to him and why he is unlucky. Rather than being hardworking and Having purpose, control and power. It's more a more lighthearted 'how am I going to get myself out of this one' gag. The A.I. Tries to act as the comic relief but I find joke overplayed and will predict that the joke saying - press 0 for a human... more>> will get repeated alot during the novel. If you can stomach the flippant use of crude words to get a laugh then you might enjoy the rest.

As for how this series will turn out, It will be up to the execution of the premise and the story. I'll assume if you have read the two aforementioned novels then you won't be missing out on much if you don't read this as its a parody. But it's early days and we will see if more tags are updated that are interesting enough. <<less

I've read many mage novels but this one takes the cake for the worst novel I've read in my novel reading career. Development that doesnt make sense, character that are thrown out left and right, plot that doesnt go anywhere and a very s*upid ending. Honestly I really loved this story, a great premise, a smart protagonist and lovable side characters and really interesting villains. The story overall was really good. I'm only giving this story a 4 star because at the end I felt like the author was rushing and trying to wrap up everything in a messy way. The writing felt all over the place in the final few chapters. To say the ending was not satisfying would be an understatement. It is good at first. I like how he acts during the time when he accidentally became a mage and his transformation by burning on the stake. The real thing that broke the rope is when Michelle sacrifice herself. After that his actions is consistent and very great. Writing books and newspapers, it was a great way to fight. The only thing that I think is lacking back there is the "drive" - I know he is driven, but I think it is better if the author wrote the MC... more>> started as mad, feeling creature or something, unlike the cold and stoic personality. Regardless, these parts are great.

However, the flow changes when during and after the Kingdom of Icor Arc. It became smooth sailing - there are waves in the ocean but they safely sail through and there is no tension anymore. The plot holes started appearing like the MC's and Antagonist's character, the other civilization, system, etc. I don't want to say anything further about these, it is best for you to read to discover these plot holes.

Lastly, I have hope that a "God" really appear, so there is really a emphasis on the "revolt" part. I don't really see why there is revolution when the entire drama became predictable or the author gave so much plot armors. I think the more appropriate title is When a Mage Risen or The Rise of the Mage. Additionally, introducing God will also make the fanatical churches something to back their words and actions. It might lead to an ending of God punishing the MC or the MC making a last stand to his death. <<less

For those who said the MC in this story act according to his own decision, it made it more human and stuff,

Quote from compass96 (who review this novel as well)

"I really love this novel. For one, I liked the mc's calmness and caution. When the novel began, the main character transmigrated but didn't have the privilege of getting memories of the previous owner of his body so he had to play it by ear. He even started in a pretty bad situation where he was kidnapped and the... more>> kidnapper wanted some answers but naturally he couldn't answer anything because he didn't receive any memories. He had to speak to the kidnapper in a way that would satisfy the kidnapper while picking up clues to understand his situation. Even though he is clearly intelligent, other people are also intelligent and powerful and the MC takes that into consideration."

I agree with this, MC start out playing mind game just to survive. However, as the story progress, It change, MC may feel human with some of his decision making related to magic, however, when it come to human relation, Author done a very bad job.

His kidnapper was so cruel to him at first, and if not for him still being useful, he would have die a long time ago, however It shift to her saving him, but after that, he actually start to trust her so much as partner even when knowing that after he give her what she want, she might still kill him later. But later Author try to redeem her even more by sacrifice herself to save MC. It end there.

Next problem, MC is never cautious at all, knowing magic is ban in his kingdom, always out scratch himself thin in situation that will go against him. He try to find an assassin who try to kill him, so go find an info guy, info guy tell him to kill church people to get what he want. He decide to do it instantly, no hesitation at all, not even thinking if the guy would lie to him or not, in this story people always lie to stranger. So it feel very force for MC to just act like that. He never try to find a safe place for himself or anything, act very immature for the sake of the joke. However this story try to go for not serious vibe and serious vibe at the same time, so the joke is not funny at all since it get him put under even more pressure.

The only reason I still read this is because I want to see him thinking of unique way to use his limited spell, but after 100+ he been using basically the same thing, and it won't work half the time because author need more word so fight are very long, and very much, church people have too much trump card and MC need to fight for a long time for it.

He has 3 water spell;

  • water ball
  • Ice
  • Steam
Ice could have been use in many creative way, but that too op so ice magic is very bad in this novel. It basically a bow in a gun fight with full armor.

We see MC out-smart bishop once, but that is the only time MC have ever been able to out-smart important people, and it was due to mostly luck or plot, since he see thought the Bishop scheme because he see the person who suppose to be mage is actually a priest by chance.

Anyway, Wonderful magic system, but Character act according to plot not his human like decision making since he made mistake he knew he could avoid, and trust people too easily in a world where people always lie. Mostly from people since author don't want a bloodbath, but too lazy to make story adapt properly. <<less

Great. [Eng. Names] I don't get why this novel had such bad review when this novel seriousness was masterfully utilized and the realism of characters and their behaviors are top notch, even I can't help decide who to side with when reading it at the start. I also sympathize with how he ended up at the stake, from start to there it was a very immersive read.

I'm giving 5 star due to the INJUSTICE of the REVIEWS

I've been binging this novel for the past 3 days, and I think it's great.

Of course, it's not a masterpiece, but I certainly believe it deserves more than 3 stars. It's a very enjoyable novel. For some reason, I was reminded of Lord of the Mysteries while reading this. While it doesn't really measure up to LotM's quality nor world building, I felt like it wouldn't be fair to disregard it either. The main characters of both novels are also similar in that they slowly grow stronger and become pretty... more>> OP. They're both pretty independent, though I feel like Benjamin (WaMR) does build closer and more involved relationships.

I prefer novels where they isn't any romance at all, so this was completely my cup of tea. I also found it interesting how Benjamin, from an outsider's perspective, really does seem like a villain. His cunning, his dubious actions, his c*cky attitude. It's so easy to think of him as a villain later on in the chapters, if you were to think of everything from another perspective. I just personally found that exciting.

Lastly, I saw a reviewer criticizing the author of being homophobic, sexist, and racist. I don't really understand where they got this impression. One of the characters was revealed to be gay, but I personally didn't see anything homophobic about it. The religious church discriminated against them, but as a parallel to Christianity, I think that makes sense. The church is also portrayed as the antagonist throughout the story, so if anything, the author is fighting against h*mophobia (though I wouldn't put it that far haha). I guess there's also when the MC found out, he was rather shocked, but beyond that I couldn't sense any further prejudice. Later on, he even debates teaming up to defeat the church together. As for racism and sexism, I literally don't even know where that came from, so I don't have anything else to say.

Overall, I feel like this novel is pretty good. Enjoyable, and exciting. It definitely deserves more than a 3.3 rating. <<less

Pretty bad novel if you want even semblance of sense. The characters, especially the MC, are soo s*upid I can't bear to read anymore. Constantly, constantly, in every single chapter, the decisions made are soooo forced that I can't bear to read more. I'm pretty sure the author is homophobic (hey, opinions differ), sexist and a tad bit racist (everything bad that happens, I noticed so far, has never happened in the east?) ?

I won't go into too much detail because this novel is literally so easily spoiled. All I... more>> can say is, this novel deserves less than 2 stars but I give 1 more because I liked the way this was going... in my head.

Would I recommended:

If you have nothing to read and don't care about things making even the slightest bit of sense, then sure. Otherwise, ofc no. <<less
