What’s Wrong With Seeking Death?

After being killed, Xu Turan was given a system and got pulled into a certain thriller romance novel. There, she became the crucial female supporting role who seeks death. However, on the first day of transmigrating, her system was urgently recalled for repair as it was aging.

As their farewell was imminent, the system was worried about its new host so it repeatedly reminded Xu Turan: [Your role is to be a supporting character who is always seeking death. You do know what that means, right?]

Xu Turan recalled her rich experience of doing just that in her previous life and she replied affirmatively with absolute confidence.

So the system withdrew with its mind at ease.

After a few days, the system that had been away for repair finally returned. When it looked at the situation, it almost malfunctioned: [What are you doing?!!]

Xu Turan, who was busy arguing with the Evil God, answered without thinking, “I’m doing what you asked me to do – trying to find ways to die.]

System: […?!]

*

What the system thought about seeking death: provoking the heroine, vying for the male lead, ignoring the advice of her boss, being the potential villainess of the story and stepping on others, seducing handsome men and humiliating herself, and finally being punished for trying to seek death.

Xu Turan’s understanding of seeking death: provoking elite monsters, robbing supernatural weapons, ignoring the auras that terrifying entities were desperately honing, belittling the dormant pseudo-Gods and raising them in captivity, and somehow dragging a male companion for outings.

It was impossible for her to die. Even if she danced frantically on the edge of danger, it simply was not possible. At most, she was just a little crazy and a little intimidating.

And then as time passed, both traits got increasingly stronger.

Till the end, it was both terrifying and legendary for one to change oneself into a Horror itself.

The system almost went insane: How is that even possible?

I liked it. Probably 4 stars would be more reasonable if you compares this to a well thought out novel, but for an instance dungeon horror comedy web novel genre it's good. The early chapters are definitely more interesting but it actually stays pretty fun throughout. (One of the later arcs is really good too) The horror is itself actually isnt cliche I mean the enemy designs are generally pretty unique and the tension is actually there for a comedy series, which is very fresh and fun to me. The... more>> romance plot honestly is secondary and I kinda didn't really need it.

I get the feeling the 1 star reviewer did not read the novel, as they made several factual errors about the premise. (The number of procogs, the not wanting to mu*der, how the power system works etc) One point I do agree on is the authors does fudge the power system a little bit at times, but not dramatically, and when you get the lore later on it's reasonable. I do think there are some misunderstandings that could be resolved a lot quicker if the MCs had more realistic writing too. <<less

Sooooo I almost didn't read it cause of that 1 star review but I did and ended up liking the story. As the tag states this has comedy and it's shouldn't be expected to be top tier horror. It does have horror but nothing too over the top, mostly suspense and a bit of a twist really.

Romance is not the main focus, it's an add-on and my only complaint is that I wished the author had added more romance. It can be considered to be slow burn, and I quite... more>> like how the story hints at ML liking MC at the beginning, and how it progresses, ML is very open about his feelings.

This story isn't for everyone, some people will find it unpleasant but that doesn't mean it's a bad read. It's all just about personal taste.

On a side note: I actually like the ML, he isn't like most mls I've seen in transmigration stories. He isn't all powerful, cold or calculating. He is quite human, shy, calm, very sweet, thoughtful and yes he's a kind person, does what he needs to help other and that refreshing. <<less

Honestly a pretty funny novel, it's got horror elements, and it's a delightful read. I'm mostly just making a review because of the low rating first given, I really don't think this novel deserves that. Like another review said, it's not something you should expect to be a top tier horror, or something to be taken that seriously in general, especially with the description of the actual book, it's a little silly.

There's an interesting background set up for our main character. It seems like there are higher powers that know that she would be coming, so that's pretty interesting. There's been a lot of foreshadowing that she's a part of something much larger, and I can't wait to find out what part she plays. At the beginning though, our system basically just dumps her into the novel a year before she's actually supposed to be there, so that's why a lot of the "original novel" hasn't even happened yet.

Honestly the relationship between her and our ML is also pretty nice, it's a slow building romance, but the trust and cooperation is nice. The fact that they always come back to each other, and are always aware of what the other is doing is super nice- our ML is very caring and kind, and I love that. It's a better look than an arrogant overbearing ML atleast. Their relationship hasn't been made official yet, but their feelings for each other are pretty clear.

Overall a good read if you don't want anything too serious, and are just looking to pass the time. It's more comedic than horror, and it's pretty interesting.

Novel extremely disappointingly not recommended to read.

Better Summary: MC is a mysterious psychopath-like Mary Sue OP girl with a system that upgrades her based on death value. She wakes up in a Horror themed world and proceeds to bully a bunch of horrors. There’s also a loser male lead guy who is kind, has premonition powers, and is oddly attentive to the MC and can detect her even through illusions and will always heal and comfort the Mc! He is also the perfect match to her lol. So yeah, it’s... more>> mostly a two person show or mainly the ML being shocked at how crazy MC stirs things up!

Downsides of the novel:

1) Overarching plot weakness: The pacing is rather bad, with author dropping exposition dumps for world building about the horrors and hinting that MC has a mysterious past that has been targeted. She’s also got the powers or order and chaos and may or may not be an ancient deity. There’s lots of action of events taking place, but in the overall scheme of the Mc’s story and of the plot she’s “supposed” to be in, the heroine of the world MC crossed into hasn’t even met the ML yet.

2) Mc’s character is... well all over the place. She was titled chaotic for a reason, but author also added order. MC is perfectly fine with dealing with blood and monsters but has little common sense - something the author sets up earlier but then doesn’t end up doing many inventive things with. And somehow after hacking away at human people, monsters that look like humanoids, and evil monstrous mu*derous humans - she still has trouble attempting to kill (or even think of killing) the Psychopath mastermind behind killing tons of helpless students? It all seems rather ridiculous with what the author built up earlier. These inconsistencies run through the story considerably, much with how the expert supernatural incident group people are actually happy go lucky imbeciles or decidedly incompetent. (Yes, I know that’s how all these stories go, but having supposedly seasoned individuals always lose their brains and not to horror pollution is a problem. At least the author often mentions illusions or the like for that.)

3) Horror Versus Comedy theming - Novel is more comedy than horror but at some point the two genres really cut into each other violent killer style. One quick example: It’s hard to appreciate the deadly mu*derous pen cultist deity when the MC is laughably tricking it into writing over all the walls and squiring ink. At the same time, it’s not quite as funny when there’s lots of implied blood and sacrifice to the pen cultist deity and hints of previous evil behavior. Timing can also be off for a lot of parts. For example - emphasizing how pitiful the malevolent house fish monster is while simultaneously showing it consume phantom people weakens both portions. There’s also an added bit of frustration over the MC not being able to finish off an enemy for comedic effect when the situation clearly necessitates quick action. (Though at least few humans were harmed in the current story due to Mc’s actions due to her alignment).

Mostly though, the novel really tends to drag on in each horror scenario and the time spent after is filled with middling exposition. The world feels rather empty, with the MC sort of latching onto the ML and system. There’s not much look into Mc’s background, but lots of exposition hinting at it. The other main issue is the real lack of reasoning itself for the MC to upgrade. Sure, MC was told once way back that the only way to continue is to gain death value but her method has only worked due to the insane plot armor coverage. There’s also a certain lack of a imagination in the story when it comes to all the mystical abilities and severe over reliance on the most ridiculous of items (paper that explains horror rules or mystic props like the overly consumed drugs). The action is also extremely weak basically boiling down to using plot item A (A Mystic Sealing Box!) or by mysterious ability B (MC ice powers? Precognition by some other person despite there being only 2 human precogs left [One of whom is the ML]. The final nail in the coffin though has to be the author’s strange obsession with temporary flashbacks (thankfully with time stamps though time and space are warped so practically anything could have been pasted in). If you read the novel you’ll see it being used here and there for dramatic effect.

-900Octillion/10 Interesting premise, lackluster execution. <<less

I just finished reading it by MTL and wow, was that a ride. I really liked how the story went and I think the author wrapped it up satisfactorily too.

  • About the MC
I think Xu Turan was a fun character to follow. She's a strong female protagonist who uses clever ways to solve her problems. Honestly she is a bit OP, but I don't feel it detracts from the story.

  • About the CP

Spoiler

Placing under spoiler just in case, but it's not really a surprise. Xu Turan's love interest is Yang Buqi. Opposite to Xu Turan, he is very gentle and caring towards her. While he doesn't approve of her methods, he won't hesitate to bend over backwards to accommodate her.

In the beginning I didn't feel like they had a lot of chemistry. There weren't really any moments where I thought that one could really make the other happy or emotionally fulfilled. But there were some sweet moments further along the line that sorta made up for it. I still Lowkey think they woulda been better off as platonic partners but *shrugs*. If they're happy then I'm happy.

Overall, romance is not very present in the story. If you are looking for sweet moments, then you'll likely be disappointed.

  • About the horror
Overall, the horror is best depicted in the beginning arcs. The latter ones are less scary, but still hold a unique twist and helps uncover more details about the overarching plot. The villains of each arc were very unique though. I like that the author didn't go with what we usually see in horror stories. Along the same line of thought, the story follows gifted individuals/organizations who's job is to deal with these abominations of a more eldritch origin, which I thought was original and refreshing.

If you want to see what the arcs are generally about, you can take a look under the spoiler below. Of course these are very briefed to avoid big spoilers. These may be slightly out of order lol

  • The overarching plot/mystery
While I don't think the reveal is the most original concept ever, the journey to it was worth it. I think all if not most loose ends are tied up by the conclusion as well. Gotta give the author props for that.

  • About the writing
I felt the writing was pretty solid. It had good descriptions and very little to none useless flowery fluff. The latter half does suffer from some info-dumping but that is more after the reveal. Characters/allies introduced in the beginning of the story are utilized and referenced quite a bit. Usually I find side/minor characters to be one use in CN novels, so that was a pleasant surprise. Author makes good use of foreshadowing with formerly mentioned settings and details. And the ending gives a nod to all these characters before giving the final farewell, which was nice.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience that I would happily recommend to anyone else! <<less
