Qi Leren had just cleared the bad ending of «The Nightmare Games» when his laptop died well before its time. His luck seemed to follow him as he was transported, along with the other passengers, to a hospital following an accident between his bus and a truck. Upon waking in a transfusion hall rather than a ward, QiLeren felt a familiar sense of dread as he took in the hospital that held no trace of other people…

This review is for both parts 1 and 2 of the "Welcome to the Nightmare Game" series (although I specifically didn't read till the end of the second novel because the TL isn't finished yet~). This novel seemed like a fairly simple infinite flow/survival game type of novel -- which it is! But, it's a bit different from most of the ones I've read in that the important instances are all connected to each other (if you've read "The Earth is Online" then you'll know what I mean) -- it's... more>> all one big story, and the MC triggers a big chunk of this story after playing the original game and then being sent into the world of Nightmares.

I expected this novel to be a horror -- but it's actually more of action/adventure/thriller. There are horror themes, and the story can seriously get creepy at times. But, for the most part, you don't have to worry about being in high-tension all the time from the scares. The power system in this novel involves cards, and the MC's main one is the ability to reload a file (although it's a little bit more tricky than just simply going back into the past to try and try again). There's gore and death, some of which are from highly likable characters that play a key role. There's also tragedy and angst -- but it's wrapped with sweet, hopeful romance.

IDK it's really hard to describe this novel LOLOL. All I can say is... that you should definitely read it! It passed quite a few hands when it comes to translations, but they're all of good quality. I also think it's possible to read the novel now even though the series isn't completely translated yet. If only because there's a good stopping point before the mid-point of book 2. If you're willing to risk it, I swear you won't regret it~ It's a story with lots of exciting ups and downs, and the characters are well-worth the care invested.

CHARACTERS: 10/10

The characters of this novel are great! The author likes their subtext, so there's lots of complexity in them. I can't help but love and care for these adorkable idiots and hope they get their HE.

Qi Leren (MC)

The MC doesn't have any outstanding skills when he starts out. But, he's the kind of MC whose heart is always in the right place. He's kind, but not so s*upid that he's willing to trust and care for everyone and everything.

Ning Zhou (ML)

The ML is the cold beauty type lolol~ His outer appearance is definitely very cold, but his insides are warm and fluffy. T.T Altogether, he's an innocent boy with OP strength and a horrible background.

ROMANCE: 8.75/10

I can't help but think that the romance of this novel is a lot more classic than most. It starts with love at first sight and awkward encounters... and... idk, it's all very innocent! I've seen such developments in anime before (mostly shoujo type). At the same time, I can't help but think of romeo and juliet, since these straight boys (yes, you got that right, they both start off straight!) are truly star-crossed lovers.

In terms of dynamic, their sweet and innocent love is not really my preference, but I think it suits the characters and the tone of the story. Kind of contrasts the darkness.

SETTING: 10/10

Ahhhhh! I love the worldbuilding for this novel! It's truly great! There are lots of things going on in the background, a lot of which have yet to be revealed. The instances are pretty interesting too since they usually tie together with the main plot.

PLOT: 8.5/10

There are times when I think the pacing could have used a liiiiiiitle bit of work. Maybe it's also just the author's propensity towards extremely flowery language. IDK. The plot is also currently a mess since not much is known. I like the development of the plot, but the execution was just the slightest bit clumsy at times. Enough that I got distracted because certain parts didn't interest me as much.

RATING: 4.65/5

I'm looking forward to the day that I can read this novel completely! I didn't want to end up being disappointed by a cliffhanger, so I stopped while I was ahead, but I really want to know what happens next. Some developments are easy to guess, I think. But idk, the novel has shown a tendency of being surprising~ <<less

I'm not saying this is my first time reading Novel with Multiple Volumes. But I usually avoiding them. But I finally click this Novel and finally finished the first of the trilogy... I suddenly remember why I always avoid them unless the translation is completed...

The author doesn't play the usual theme like many people do in the beginning. ... more>>
Spoiler

I'm talking about who the ML is. The fact that ML doesn't appear in any kind of form in the first Game, nor evel get hints or any foreshadowing. But what we seen is someone else WHO IS NOT AN ML being Nice and Sweet toward MC. But I'm not even surprise about who Su He suppose to be in the end...

[collapse]

The novel might not be about Romance. It's barely about it. BUT the Emotion itself IS also an Important part in this Novel. Get it?

How it ended the first trilogy is actually in a not bad way...

Emotional... And I imagine the scene like a Movie and it was Beautiful but also makes you want to scream "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA MOREEEE!!!!".

Anyway... I don't know if I should read the second series or wait for the complete version of the Translation... <<less

Ahhhh TT this book. I can't yet judge part 2 but part 1 was fantastic.

I shall tell everyone reading my review: If this is a genre you like, don't hesitate. Go and read this book. The rating is only not so good because the translation stops early on. HOWEVER Quazar edited the mtl and did an absolutely great job with it. It can be read just like a normal translation so y'all don't worry.

Also fun fact: This book series is not a trilogy. It has four parts. The last one... more>> is being written currently.

And an advice from me: Don't spoiler yourself about who the ML is. Finding it out through reading is much better, 100% worth it <<less

It was sooo good that I didn’t want to stop reading it so I followed my heart religiously and lost one nights sleep. Luckily there are still two books coming up soon so I wasn’t really despaired when it ended.

Every instance MC entered was entertaining and well written, and characters have wholesome and unique developments throughout the story.

i didn’t like slow romances in horror genre but this one changed my mind and it didn’t even feel like an slow romance considering S.

It’s neither light nor heavy reading, just right one with a soul stirring emotional excitement and curiosity. The gore isn’t bad and neither is the horror, it was more of a thriller comedy romance. <<less

I think this is one of the best web novels of this genre. The love line between MC and ML is consistent, logical, and makes you burn. In fact, I didn't quite understand MC's interest in ML when they first met, but I can see that they have soulmate relationship.
The plot is interesting, although the beginning is quite typical. I am very pleased to see how the characters really develop, grow up, and their relationships do not occupy the main part of the plot (conditionally). At some points, the... more>> book may break your heart, but its not bad.......... <<less

This was good, to be completely honest, it was a bit cringe on the second arc but if you get through that it's really good HAHAHA I mean, we don't really know how 'Love at first sight works' of you've never experienced it and I'm actually envious of them, but it still is somehow cringe HAHAHA aside from that I love everything else, the side characters not taking too much attention cause the reason I'm reading a novel cause of the main characters. The growth of the MC tho could... more>> be more detailed? I mean in specific parts, it just skims through it with a sentence but its not that big of a deal cause the MC doesn't change much after that, and the detailed part was explained in part II. The action/horror part is good for me, I think it is explained really well and I get to imagine it nicely. Nothing seems too rushed. I like it

Spoiler

The plot twist I honestly did not expect, , because I literally though Su He was the ML on the first part... ML is not so much MY type but he seems to fit the MC's type very much so I'm pretty happy for that.

[collapse]

I hope this gets translated faster, but I stopped at part II chap 56 to not stop at a cliffhanger hehe <<less

I absolutely love this book as well as its series. After I finished this book (book 1) I immediately went and mtled up until the current chapter (somewhere 100+ in book 3) and I can say it does not disappoint.

What I loved about this book when I first started was that the main character truly was quite weak. Not frail. But weak enough so that I could see character growth and potentially a zero to hero story. That was what hooked me in at first, but boy can I tell... more>> you everything after that just pushed me into the pit that is Welcome to the Nightmare Game.

In terms of characters, I really enjoyed both our main leads just because I found them interesting but realistic in a way. Our MC comes across as quite plain at first, but later on throughout the rest of book 1 and even more so in book 2 and 3, I really fell in love with his compassionate character, I promise you there is a lot of growth in terms of strength ; he's not weak forever. And damn, our ML is just.... the best?? I just love him so much he's so cute ajxbahxjkss.

The romance is slow, and quite painful if I'm honest, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. There's a lot of angst. Haha. Yeah, a lot stands in the way between our main leads....

Anyways, I absolutely recommend anyone hesitating to read it because it's just such a journey and it's one of those great novels where you can really tell the plot was planned beforehand and not written as it's released. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that it makes for tasty foreshadowing and well planned plot twists. I can't wait for book 3 to be completed :)))) <<less

3 words: IT’S SO GOOD!!!

I was sobbing so hard at the end. I promise it’s a HEA (happily ever after), kinda. And we have hope for more lovey-dovey scenes in the next 2 books. Can’t wait!!!

Also, I really appreciate the efforts of translators Quarzar, Sigma, and DreamPotato. Their translations were wonderful. It read so well. I didn’t even notice any grammatical errors, so I was free to immerse myself in the story. I also appreciate their efforts to interpret the original text in a way that translates well to English,... more>> like the Chinese idioms and such. Thanks a lot!!! <<less

It's to early to say much about this novel, however, albeit that I wasn't really attracted much by the first arc thing did manage to become more interesting towards the end and I found myself being drawn into the story and was in the end sad when I realized I'd caught up with the chapters.

The author and translator are very good at describing the ambient atmosphere which adds a lot to the quality of the reading experience. It is not just terror but so much more.

There also seems potential for... more>> character growth and interesting grains of wisdom on the matter of life or death though it is to early to say for sure.

There's a bit of mystery as well ad the story backgground seems well developed and complex.

I'd differently recommend to give it a try or save it as potential gem to read later. <<less

I have read this and now it's starting to have a manhwa/manhua!

I also love of how realistic it's romance is, and how torture it is for being slow, but that just make's it more fun to read (´ε`*)

But that's just my opinion

I would give the first book about a 4.3. Good book, I love the escape game genre, and this one has interesting plot twists that I really liked, and unique MC characteristics. At the start of the second book, the genre is all over the place and irritating religious stuff started to pop up, so I ditched it there, but sometimes I wonder if it starts to get back on track later on..? Not sure if I really want to push through what it turned into though. Anyway, it is... more>> great if you just read this first book and stop there, albeit a bit tragic. good stuff. Cliffhanger ending.

Its really long and really slow. Su Hue is not the ML. My first time reading, I couldn't get into it, but my second, I pushed through. Is it worth it? Well I wish the story is complete, but its not. Its part of a 3 part series, and the 2nd part is still being translated. I thought the love was kinda sweet.

I finally found this after a year. This one is good actually, there might be angst and stuff but for survival/horror genre, I like it. It was slow burn romance but bearable. I like the plot, there are times when I cried *sob* but its worth of time

I enjoyed this series, the games are interesting, so are the plots. Though there are moments that made me feel a bit bored because honestly some plots are so dragged out. But overall, still an enjoyable read. I read it in raws, this is a rare case where the author did not lock any chapters and all chapters are available for viewing for free. But I think the last book of the series is not completed yet so I shall put this story on hold. I like to read it... more>> all in one go.

Love the interaction between the MC & ML! <<less

The first book is so so good that I actually went to find the machine translated version. The ending is a bit tragic but I think it gets better in the second book. I love the slow burn and realistic romance. The horror part is done well and the plot is all linked. I love it so so much. Highly recommended

Uwaaaa~ It's unbelievably amazing! Each chapter had me hooked and looking forward to what happened next. The small little hints and the air of mystery--build just a beautiful and horrifying world! I don't even know why it took me so long just to read it, I should have done it sooner!!

The MC is just a regular person, who isn't super lucky, super-intelligent, athletic, etc.--he's just a normal person trying to survive being placed in an unknown realm/world. His reaction is logical and funny at times, it's very fun to watch... more>> him go on his journey and read what he experiences.

The ML...

Spoiler

You get to meet them in the 2nd arc and their interactions are hilarious. The author spoils who is the ML btw, so it's kind of a bummer... lol.

[collapse]

Although I'm not a fan of the 'slow romance' subgenre and seeing the tag had me hesitating, I don't regret reading it. All of the events and interactions make up for what most romance focused novels have, so you're not missing out on anything at all, really.

I highly recommend reading this novel and I wish that the translations would continue because it's simply amazing! <<less
