“Welcome home.”

This should be a very simple sentence.

But not everyone knows that for some people, this is a sentence they will never hear nor speak.

A sentence out of reach.

***

“I killed my mother.”

This was the first thing A-Xiao said to me when he hurriedly got into the passenger seat of the car.

I will talk about this book in two aspects: The way it was written, and the characters.

The author clearly was trying to convey a message through this book. I am not sure if the readers understand the extent and intensity of that message, but the author clearly succeeded in sharing her perspective and worldview. The author wrote a book so simple yet extreme that it will make you unable to read further, but you would never stop until you reach the end.

The characters are repulsive in the beginning. You wouldn't... more>> want to empathize with them. Especially the ML because he is just not humane enough. Or maybe that's what makes him human and will make you want to feel a bit for him towards the end. He is as worse as a person can get, but I personally, couldn't help but shed a tear for him in the end because even though he's at fault, he wasn't asked to be born that way. The MC is pitiful and also a little relatable (only a little) if you are a person living a normal, ordinary life. Since the story is written from his perspective, reading his thoughts, his actions, his fear, his love, and his pain, it is just so raw and real.

This isn't the best book I read. It isn't a piece of work that one would be in awe at. It hasn't got the best plot, pace, or story flow either. But I find it beautiful nonetheless. It might be a messed-up book that'll test your limits of endurance, but it has some life to it that one won't understand until they read it. <<less

Rating: 4/5- Wow... this was a difficult read.

My heart broke for the MC, his weak and indecisive character was very well written. He got wrapped up by a psycho and ended up almost throwing it all away for him.

I wonder if he ever found himself after everything happened.

... more>> Anyway- this s a really good story but it’s incredibly dark and twisted. It’s not romantic or sweet. It’s about despair, helplessness and the fact that you can not run away from your choices.

Read it but expect to feel severe melancholy and pain when you’re done.

I’m still not sure how I felt about Ah-Xiao even after I finished the book. <<less

It's short, both simple & complex, and Heavy. Full of emotions that there were times I wanted to stop, but at the same time wanted to see where their journey goes. Truly felt pity and sorrow for the both of them. They gave it all for their own reasons and to live.

The characters were well written. It's focused on our MC and ML on the run with the reason stated in the summary. It is not for the faint of heart (those tags are real but the rating should've been... more>> higher). Both of them have undesirable pasts. The MC really portrayed his unconditional love. And the ml, molded by his environment, is an aggressive and abusive partner. We see them struggle in their escape, which really felt raw, especially at the end. The emotions were really there along with their fluctuating mental health/sanity (Like with each stop and choice they make). Their choices, their actions, and their ending, was a massive ache for the heart. The bulky depressive feeling makes me feel satisfied for it as a one time read, but won't deter me in appreciating this underrated solid and melancholic piece.

Thank you for the work and for the translation! ❤️ <<less
