Valhalla Saga is pretty much the novel equivalent of a Shonen Jump manga.

The main character is mostly in the classic shonen mold, but there are a few twists with his pro-gamer background, as he learns to exploit the worlds' power system and cheat a bit with it, otherwise, he is the normal Ichigo/Natsu action hero. The other members of the main cast are well-made but simplistic, with two or three traits that define their personnalities and roles. The only complex character is the first (of two) lover interest, who is... more>> pretty good. The antagonist are, for the most part, presented in a simplistic way, wanting to destroy "because it's in their nature".

The setting is a shonen adaptation of the viking mythology at first, pretty well done in fact, especially when it comes to the "Saga" power system, which is quite simple but presented in a entertaining way. Other mythologies are introduced latter in the novel, each with its corresponding power system. The Celtic one is also well made (although the power system is more confusing), the Greek one is fair but with a power system barely explained, the Chinese/Korean one is shortly shown and the rest (Egyptian, Hindu, Sumerian...) are barely evoked. [A side note on the Chinese/Korean mythology, the names of the heroes and divinities are the Korean ones, which may confuse some readers used to the Chinese ones.]

The plot itself is simplistic, with a few surprises, good twists and plenty of comedy, but with an overuse of plot armor. I got nothing against "starts-small-saves-the-world-at-the-end" scenario, but not when the author abuses the deus-ex-machina and extends the battles and the suspence meaninglessly.

The translation is good and understandable, but does not lacks typos and misspellings, especially toward the end, where you'll also find plenty of name confusions and translation errors, which downgrades the reading pleasure. Moreover, the webmaster of the site made mistakes in the arrangement of the pages of the last chapters, which forces the reader to make detours and somewhat cut the epic crescendo.

To sum things up, Valhalla Saga gave me the same impression as Bleach, Naruto, Rave or Fairy Tail. It's entertaining, but it has got nothing out of the ordinary or surprising, it has the usual tropes of the shonen genre, the expected plot armor and deus ex machina, the characters are fine but shallow, carried more by their guts than their preparations, the setting is okay but lacks depth and the plot is in the shonen norm too. It can be a satisfying novel to a young reader coming from the shonen manga/manhua, but a more experienced reader will consider it a barely above average filler and either pass it without regrets or be relieved to have finished it.

Thank to Chwiryong for writing this novel and to Tsubak and Raigeh for translating it. <<less

Nothing constructive, just some thoughts about what I got from this novel.

It's mildly contradictive, inconsistent, simple minded, very shallow (and I'm not even a fun of 'deep' novels).

Also every major battle seems to hold a 'piano in the bush'. MC levels up too fast, somehow keeps winning against opponents good few times stronger than him.

On the bright side:

Characters are okay, it's generally fun to read

Good world, a nice and light read, but writing of the action scenes is pretty... subpar. It's partially because of the shoddy, barely proofread translation, but the writing itself is just paper thin. Kinda disappointing.

While the novel isn’t anything particularly special/amazing, it was enjoyable, at least for the most part. Honestly, things were good up until the last stretch of the novel where the MC started power creeping. Though I guess that’s nothing new.

In all, it’s worth a read, but you surely won’t be missing out on anything if you choose not to do so.

It's pretty okay, but I can only read it for a short time and need to take a break afterwards.

This novel is clichee, but pretty nice with constant epic battles and a fast paced story. The novel has one-dimensional characters, but character depth isn't needed in this story. This story delivers what it promises in a pretty good way. If you are not in the mood for this kind of story, you won't like it, if you are in the mood, then it will fulfill your need.

What I have to... more>> complain about however, is that this novel is for a mentally less mature audience. I'm okay with the MC saving the day and epic battles, but the scenes of the MC saving the day are over the top and cringe. I need to take a break of several hours to days to recover from the cringe.

If you are in the high phase of chuunibuyo or generelly an angsty teenager dreaming of being some epic warrior or something like that, then this novel is your cup of tea. For reference: Had I read this novel when I was between 12-14, I would be full of praises. Around the age of 16 I definitely started to outgrow this kind of novel.

Note: If you are really bad at English and your language comprehension is too low to comprehend the cringeness of this novel, then you can enjoy it too. <<less

Yeah, Valhalla Saga is great! The Worldbuilding is easy to understand, because they are based on myths. Furthermore Special abilities and Magics get created, based on the belief or impression others have of you. Therefore, you have to beat the bad guy in the flashiest way possible, while trying to grub the attention of all the muggles in the mortal world.

The Protagonist powers up, by slowly but surely filling the shoes of the legend he created in his gaming days.

This novel is about glory and merit, as well as a... more>> MC who shines the brightest under the sun. <<less

Great start but slightly deteriorated as the story went on. I mean, it's nice that the story is happy and all, but the lack of setbacks for the MC really hurts the depth of the story. Well, to each his own.

The epilogue and short stories were great though. This is where most korean novels are better than japanese ones. They at least know the value of a good ending and epilogue.

I tried to give this novel a chance many times but it is just so dull and lifeless. The pacing is so fast it doesn't take any time to give any basic information about anything: it is said that the warriors alot points to stats but we don't even know what those stats, we just know MC alots it equally; I didn't find any meaning to their battles until more than chapter 30; and finally, there are a f*ck ton of major battles that had happened but every time it... more>> happens, it happens without any build up and ends in just around 5 chapters so you won't even get immersed in the battle. The next problem are the characters, some of the relationship between characters happened because the author said so; take the MC and his legion's valkyrie for example, MC fell for valkyrie which I believe is already in the realm of obsession when all the interaction I saw between them is she acts as the teacher and caretaker for MC. Likewise the valkyrie fell for MC too for some reason, seriously suddenly she started getting jealous whenever MC gets close to other girls and I was like "When the hell did you two have that kind of relationship!?". Also the characters here aren't exactly interesting and don't have any qualities to sympathize or connect with them which makes the life-or-death situations pointless since it is hard to care about the characters. Speaking of battles, it is bad, because the major battles are almost always resolved by either of two things, MC gets a power-up mid battle (which already happened 5 times and I'm not even halfway through the story yet) or Thor saves the day. Also MC has way too many "chosen one" priveleges,

One is enough to make a main character, you don't need to bloat it up to 3, at least give it to other characters. Honestly I see this story as something I would have seen in an RPG adventure video game like Ys 7, there's so many enemies in here that could act as a boss battle, there's so many methods to increase the MCs power throughout the adventure and the characters are present only to act as guides, quest givers, info giver, and helper. Hell the author may have had that idea when writing this. <<less

Amazing story, from beginning to end.

The side characters have depth. I enjoyed the progress the side characters made during the adventure of this novel.

The main character Is well balanced. Great personality.

The main 3 women in the harem are very lovable and adorable.

The mixture of multiple mythologies from various cultures was entertaining as the author intertwined them within this story.

Author did a good job. I'd recommend this novel to everyone.

First of all, pardon my grammar on english.

I'm not korean (because one of reviewer tells about korean boy overrated this novels), I like this novel, or at least for my self.

Its concept was someone reincarnated that on earth (on novel its called by terra) was originally a professional gamer that has claimed the highest throne on the Dark Age game that he was played most, became the strongest god among all the worlds. First of all, all reincarnator that not come only from earth but also from another... more>> worlds (on concept that brings mith as well, it has ten worlds/realms, including earth, it has asgard, olympus, etc.). The past of MC that became professional gamer plays a big role. The power (on novels it calls by saga) of MC is unique one because the MC has been reincarnated on asgard but he was the citizen of earth before. So because of it, he can claim the power of gods from every each worlds. Of course its novel wasn't suddenly gain strength, MC obtain new power through a lot of battles. So because of it, you will being through the thrill of battles. Of course for me, the author has succeed because I feel I can understand the situation on its chapter. Not every novel can make me feel it, but everyone has it own preference. But, you will also have "heart warming" as well, but not that much. You can imagine like your beloved person come back from great war. Well that enough with abstrac

For me, the unique was;

1. The plot setting was different from another novel. The author not take myth of one realms, like asgard only, but another realms as well like olympus, temple (if you know sun wukong)

2. The strength doesn't come suddenly, and its grown is stable. Not too long or too short

3. It's action was solid, the story goes mainly on battlefield. Because it genre mention about wars. Do not have too long conversation that doesn't relate too main story. 4. The scene not only contain wars, but you still can feel its atmosfer. Well if you not judged it by one side.

Maybe thats all, but its novel has its own flaws. I think this novel flaw on its ending. More precisely, its anti klimax was extreme. Maybe if ending a little bit different, it will become masterpiece. <<less

The main focus of this novel was world building and power system. And autor f*cked it all up.

World building. Start was quite good, with Valhalla mythology, Odin, Thor, Valkyrias, heros who died in the battle with fanatic view to everything related to battle. Then author added Celtic mythology and it went into a sink and became info dump, where you pick an item, that happen to be a legendary artifact or figure, give it one line of description, and throw back in to pile to never be remembed again. And... more>> if you managed to memorise everything from last 100 chapters here Greek Mythology, still remembered - Korean Mythology, Egyptian, Hindu...

Power system. MC has many skills that do something. The longer into a novel, the less description of power, that MC have, given and in one moment it became a list of abstruse words. <<less

Honestly a really interesting novel. I haven't read a lot of light novels, but the concept that the other world the MC is reincarnated to is one that revolves around myth and legends makes a really fun plot and background. If I had to say, I wouldn't say it's a one of a kind work, but its more like a collaboration of multiple works and stories about myths. I would say that if you read the Percy Jackson series, watched Marvel movies and have a bit of understanding with fantasy/game... more>> aspects you can visualize the setting of the story. But, the plot itself is pretty interesting and the MC really does go weak to strong and what I like about the author, is that they make the MC go through close call situations to get stronger as well. Unlike a MC that always gets saved last minute, or someone who. Completely annihilates an enemy in one swing, this MC has multiple factors that makes him strong and not just solely on 1 skill/move/power. I want to point out that the harem tag is light at the beginning but gradually goes into it towards the end. This said, he is spending time with a lot of girls but only actually has feelings for a handful of them and isn't too intense about it. It's not like one of those novels where a girl falls for the MC every 5 chapters and in this novel, the girls that he ends up being with are all people who're actually into him and it's pretty heartwarming romance and interaction between MC and heroines are fairly light in the beginning but as the novel goes on, it gets into the heroines and makes a lot of connection between the MC. Overall the 'game like interface' that the world the MC goes in has a really unique way of explaining 'skills' (sagas) along with its interesting way of providing 'experience' (runes) and attributes. In my opinion, I think this novel leans more towards the serious side but only by a little. Humor can be seen here and there, romance is and short scenes of MC - heroine interactions are seen throughout the chapters and various emotions can be seen to be felt in this story. Each battle is a life and death battle for the most part and the action scenes are well portrayed. In addition, the comraderie seen in this novel is nice and heartfelt as there's a lot of scenes portraying these behaviors. Great novel 5/5, if I can have any comments criticizing it, it would be that there weren't any side stories at the end of the novel. Ending itself was great in my opinion as it didn't rush it too much, but still a lot can still be used as materials for at least a couple of side stories if the author wanted to. <<less

I really enjoyed the novel and the world it had created. It has a lot of action and humour and I think to truly enjoy this you shouldn't take it seriously and just go with the flow. This novel gives me the same feel when I was a kid watching cartoons, exepct this time I know what the adults are lauging at too (if you know what I mean). It has the basic MC gets cheat and blasts trough everything after struggling at the beginning of every challenge. The characters... more>> are very memorable through out the novel even though almost none of them get any deep backstory. I recommend this to those who want to read an action story with a light tone and without much complicated stuff. <<less

The good:

The fights are actually pretty decent. Sometimes it is hard to mentally keep up with what is happening and there are more than a few asspulls but they are pretty enjoyable in a shonen novel type way.

The lore is enjoyable to learn about and you can really tell that the author didn't just do namedrops but actually looked into the myths he writes about.

Even though this is a harem, the MC isn't wishy washy about it nor is he a manwhore. I personally wish he would humor some of... more>> the other girls more but that is just me. There is also a main girl that can be considered MC's OTP.

And probably one of the better pros is that the novel doesn't just throw all the women to him. There are actually developing romances besides the MC's and I was satisfied with them even though she was one of my top picks.

The bad:

So if you have read enough novels, you know there is always that reoccuring theme that is meant to be the comedic relief. This one gets pretty old really quickly and it was much better when it had utility but said utility drops off quickly until waaaaay later. This also segways into other issues with this novel.

I don't want to say the MC is generic because that won't really tell you much but he doesn't have anything redeemable personality wise to make him memorable as a character.

I have my gripes with the heroines. Main heroine technically has a lot of screentime but hasn't actually been useful besides moral support. Her role in the novel also doesn't feel like anything beyond "MC's woman".

The power system in this novel has little explanation and that which is explained seems to mean nothing much anyways. This is also attributed to the fact that it is way too varied and imbalanced. First we got a rune system that acts as stats, then we get the geass which we use like once, then sentences which I am not even sure about myself and then like 5 more other things that I won't go into. You just know that the MC got stronger but you shouldn't expect to compehensively check by how much compared to before.

The lack of foreshadowing, cliffhangers and plot twists makes the volumes kind of hard to read en masse. Your attention will drop often and will make this medium sized novel feel longer than it is. Kind of a dangerous spot as it might just cause you to drop it and move on.

Overall, it isn't a bad novel but won't be topping anyone's personal favorites. More of a timekiller than anything. <<less

Long story short, Asgard arc = great, the rest = only so so. At least Asgard is the longest arc, but still...

Spoiler

During Asgard arc, the plot is well-woven and well shadowed, with even comedic moment like 'the one who rode a Valkyrie' meme contributing to what was happening and all the love interests were relevant. Important support character like Odin, Loki, etc all have their agency which play an important role in the plot and the others at least have a good presence. The rules given was well introduced before they come into play and easy to understand.

During the Olympia-Temple arc, we have chapters that were pretty much just filler that even contradict what was established till now (Hydra chapter) and irrelevant fanservice like all Olympian goddesses giving him a meeting because LOL meeting meme. Supporting characters also seems to lose all their agency and their presence amount to extra hand. The cast more or less focused on giving the MC all the praise and power up they can squeeze out, because the MC is too OP and basically no plan or strategy beyond 'send him to the hottest spot' was needed.

[collapse]
The very last stretch/conclusion was suitably epic, but suffered due to the build up before that being mediocre.

I'd still recommend this story for the Asgard arc alone and if it ended there I'd rate it 8 or even 8.5. As it is, i'd only rate it a 7. <<less

A good light hearted novel. By light hearted I mean you will feel good or should I say your mood will improve. If you are bored with general killing, dirty tricks and political planning, try this one for a change as we know only good hearted warriors get a chance for Valhalla even in actual Myth. And there are not many completely translated novels in above mentioned topic and mythological wars.

The only thing genuinely good thing about this novel is the fight scenes. Most of the time, they are EPIC to the MAX, as long as you ignore rolling dragons. The story line itself is just plain average, not helped by a couple of overwhelmingly OP skills that the MC has. Yes, I'm talking about the dragon eyes technique that can differentiate between friends and foes. The romance fared worse than the story line, because it is non-existent. Character developments outside the MC's is also non-existent.

Just to be precise, I would give this a score of between 3.5-4.

First, I will start talking about the pros. I will admit that the plot is very good. The whole idea about Valhalla and the use of actual legendary heroes is a very fresh way of doing dimensional warfare which is a common theme in many Korean novels which makes it somewhat original. The main character doesn't get OP instantly and gets stronger steadily and it was entertaining to watch him grow. This novel is very similar to I... more>> am the Monarch so if you enjoyed that, you will enjoy this.

Now for the cons, I rated this novel a little low because the characters are SO FREAKING ONE DIMENSIONAL. The side characters, like in I am the Monarch, ALL worship him. I used the word "ALL" because everybody who don't worship or even admire him are all dead or will die later on in the novel. All the side characters seem to exist just to make the Main Character look good rather than to drive the plot. It's fine for the Main character to be worshiped and admired but he gets elevated to a god-like existence for the side characters way too quickly. <<less
