On the day of my eighteenth birthday celebration, my parents brought along their real daughter.

I knew better than anyone that from this moment on, all the honors that once belonged to me would vanish like smoke.

When my father held her hand and led her to the podium, announcing to everyone that she was the real daughter of the Zhou family, I could feel all the scornful and mocking gazes fall upon me.

But just as I was about to leave, someone stopped me.

The girl who had suffered in my place for eighteen years blocked my path.

She extended her hand to me, her smile radiant.

“Isn’t today both of our birthdays? Come on, let’s cut the cake together.”

Those hands pulled me out of the darkness, bringing a long-lost light back into my world.

Just as the summary promised no real daughter vs fake daughter trope and no intrigue of any sort!

Spoiler

Real Daughter grew up in common family in a small town; her parents loved her to bits, and the town is super warm.

Fake daughter grew up in a rich family in a major metropolitan city; her parents emotionally neglected and suppressed her, controlling every aspect of her life (hence the title). She was only ever given the stick and never a carrot.

[collapse]

The real daughter in this is more in line with how I expected them to go irl if the baby swap was completely accidental. Like, unless her family s**ked in the worst way, she would've grown up well-loved and not a completely resentful white-eyed wolf like in other series. Then again, greed and pride are a thing, so eh

Little focus on romance, most of it's on the awful rich parent-daughter dynamic and the sisterhood between the two girls

So many emotions invoked in a short novel. This was a refreshing take on swapped-at-birth plotline focused on freedom and sisterhood between Zhou Zhi Yun (FL/fake daughter) and Zhou Wang Ning (true daughter) of wealthy Zhou family.

Spoiler

Both grew in different environments. FL grew in wealth but have neglectful/strict parents lacking freedom... while Zhou Wang Ning grew with so much love from deceased family. She experienced happiness and free life albeit not having a wealthy life.

Their meeting brought realizations to each other. ZWN realized that she's lucky that grew happily in loving parents without the Zhou family. While FL enabled to be more courageous and decisive in her life choices. They were able to escape and leave the Zhou family and have a happy life.

[collapse]

The romance was not the focus of the novel but ML was also a good guy who loved FL.

Spoiler

ML was Liu Ji Yuan who arranged to marry the daughter of Zhou family. He initially the fiance of FL, their parents wanted to change it to ZWN but he and ZWN disagreed... with also FL's first time saying "no" to parents.

ML got short appearance time... but in narrative, he did so much for FL to be able for them to be together in end including being successful businessman and making Zhou family fall.

[collapse]

For tragedy tag, it's for side characters. I wish to read their own story or if ever chance of rebirth (but no extras for them). <<less
