It took a long time for Yu Qingjia to learn that she was the original heroine in a Mary Sue Novel, and the other party held the female supporting system in their hands, and She was gearing up to grab her opportunity.

Hehe…

Anyway, sooner or later, she’s going to die, so it’s better to live a more comfortable life. Yu Qingjia completely let herself go, relying on her status as a legitimate daughter, she played her life against her father’s new beautiful concubine. This little concubine is not a good stubble either, as they come and go, the relationship between the two of them becomes bigger and bigger. Later, she gradually realized that something was wrong.

Why is her formidable enemy a ‘man’?

He is also a wanted man of the royal family, the youngest son of the deposed prince, and a famous tyrant in the future!

The royal family of this dynasty has a secret. For example, although these royal men are all beautiful and good at fighting, they are bloodthirsty, paranoid, and cruel from their genes.

Murong Yan fell from the clouds into the dust when he was young, and even had to disguise himself as a woman to avoid spies in the backyard of his followers. After great changes, the tyrannical element in his body could hardly be controlled until he met Yu Qingjia, his nominal “daughter”. In his restless and dark world, the sun suddenly radiated in.

Well, colour me surprised. I really did not expect to like this novel and MTL all 158 chapters of it.

Especially since I nearly dropped it in the early stages. Tbh, it was a little slow/boring at times but mostly, I've grown a bit tired of "paper tiger" MCs matched with "wolf-in-sheep's clothing" MLs. This pairing is designed to be cutesy/funny/light but, for me, with a heavily skewed power dynamic comes some degree of infantilizing behaviour and condescension. Thankfully, as this particular story progresses, so does... more>> our MC - with a little bit of added wit and maturity.

So, I kept on reading.

As the story goes, its premise is one you've certainly read a thousand times (and still enjoy, like me), but it sets itself apart from the herd thanks to:

1) The romance (kinda) : MC and ML go from slight animosity to tentative friendship and then love. You get a beautiful time progression of 3 years during which both get to know each other, slowly care for each other and mature into adults. They met when the MC is 14, and for once, they actually feel like teenagers with their bickering, clumsiness and sometimes dumb moves. I found it refreshing. The MC is more of an "ingenue" type at the start (it gets a tad better) and the ML is a yandere.

2) The system: I originally thought it would be a useless and boring add-on to make this more than a simple "girl dreams of an awful futur and now wakes up and plans to change her fate" kinda novel but boy was I wrong. This twist took a life of its own and a big revelation happens in the last few chapters.

3) Emotional growth/depth for all characters: this is what, in my humble opinion, makes an average novel a decent one. While some characters lend themselves more to villain tropes (and justifiably so), I could still feel compassion for them. A good exemple is the MC's half-sister. She's painted as villain with delusion of grandeur (which she is and her obsession will only get more intense as the plot unfurls). But that's not all of her. She is also a 14 year old girl who grew up without the heartfelt love and care of her father. A girl with a mother who, while loving her dearly, would still lament and pin incessantly after her husband who btw, hates her guts. A girl with an absentee grandmother and a great-grandmother, the matriarch of the family, who does favor her but it's always been somewhat conditional. A girl who's always felt second best, and who's suddenly offered by a strange system a path to a majestic futur if she's willing to cooperate in destroying the MC. All the chips are set to make a villain yet I can't hate her entirely. I like when there's more grey area to the psychology of a character and growth and this author delivers on it (even if it's dodgy at times) while still keeping the novel light-hearted.

4) The pacing: took a little time to gear up but for a novel of 158 chapters I'm surprised that even up to last ones there was still cool/odd things happening! I've been dropping a lot of novels 2/3 of the way in lately cos the story is clearly over, but the author will keep on stretching it on and on. Here? Not the case. Towards the end, it got "triangle of Bermuda" type of weird but I never really got bored and I prefer it that way.

5) The plot: well... there's not much there lol The beauty of this novel is in its characters, their interactions and their slow progression. But the pacing was done well enough for me not to drop the novel if that makes sense.

Sooooo, in a nutshell: it's a very light and tranquil novel where the characters are cool, the friendship/romance is fun, the pacing is on point, and there's interesting/weird things happening even in the last chapters!

So I'd only recommend if you're in the mood to kill time with a slow and somewhat uneventful story. Also, I don't think this is a novel that lends itself to binge reading. I liked better when I just perused through a few chapters a day, if that makes sense. <<less

I read this a while ago, so I don't remember everything. I do remember that I thought this novel was going to be a comedy because of the blurb, which is different from the one on the page. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it. And I would recommend it if you liked the author's other works.

Basically, the MC is the favorite daughter of a minister. Her mother died long ago, so it was just her and her dad. One day, she is furious when her dad brings a concubine home.... more>> He had broken his promise to never remarry. Only, it turns out that the concubine is actually the ML. His uncle the emperor is looking for him and wants to kill him because he's a threat to the throne. That's why he's hiding at the MC's estate.

Anyways, the ML doesn't spend a lot of time dressed as a woman. There's the usual fight for the throne and backyard drama. I normally don't like books with systems, but this one has a nice twist. The MC's female relative has the system. As a result, the deck is stacked against the MC. You'll have to read it in order to see how she gets out of this predicament.

While I wouldn't consider this my all time faves, it is definitely above average. There's a happy ending and the ML is NOT r*pey. <<less

Novel absolutely not recommended to read.

Shorter Summary: MC is a weak woman who discovers her sister has a system and wants to destroy her. She basically does nothing to protect herself, and then ML appears. There’s your usual nonsense where they get close due to ML feeling MC is brainless and also MC is awestrikingly beautiful. Time passes and ML easily defeats system girl and becomes emperor. MC still has no clue ML is Emperor but he tells her and she instantly forgives him: the end. The fodder sister with... more>> system is fodder all the way and there’s some fodder family like Mc’s garbage scum father who is always white-washed.

Overall an extremely mediocre and boring novel. MC never shows any common sense, mostly coasting in life and being toyed with by the ML. MC gets to mock some fodder but that’s about it. Extremely silly cardboard world with super fodder ML’s villainous evil emperor father and brother who ML easily crushes. -900Nonatillion/10 tr*sh. <<less

I really like this author's books, but I found this plot a bit slow. FL basically sits in her maiden home for ... more>>
Spoiler

75% of the novel while her female cousin schemes against her with an evil system. The ML is a beautiful, psychopath prince who loves the FL but spends most of the story away from her. How they defeated the evil system is interesting, but not enough for the female cousin and her system to takeover most of the novel. I wanted to rate this 3 stars, but cl**ked 4 stars by accident.

The translation is good, but I'd recommend the author's other stories before this one. <<less

The story is cute. I like both the FL and ML. The FL is only 14 years old at first and was a little bit naive but that's what makes this whole novel special. The romance was fresh, and cute and although there was an annoying system and cousin, they just added some spice to the story.

Since I like the "gender bender" genre, I decided to read this novel because it picked my interest that the one that swapped gender was the male lead instead of the female lead.

It's always fascinating to read novels with women disguised as men to prove to the patriarchal society that they can be as valiant, smart and courageous as any other ancient men. So, It would be nice to see men disguised as women to highlight the struggles and strengths of women... When I think about gender bender, I always... more>> remember the legend of Mulan.

At first, I decided to give a three stars rate, because, I'm a very petty and nitpick reader, so since I didn't like the female lead in the beginning, I gave a mediocre rate. Also, another thing that bothered me, is how I started noticing the sexism in the Chinese Ancient Time Novels (at least in the majority of the novels that I read until now, the difference of power and intelligence of men and women is too big)

But I decided to upgrade the rate to five stars, because throughout the story, female lead proved to have a decent amount of EQ (emotional quotient) and her personality improved in the end, and despite the permanent and big difference of power and intelligence between the female and male lead, one of the scenes of the novel that involved blood and fight, physical and emotional wounds, a confession of sins and love during a rainstorm, and after all that, stars in the sky and fireflies on earth, a deep and sweet song accompanied by the sound of swinging swords, made me really like this story.

Beware ⛔️ Big chunks of Spoilers, and long Reviews mixed with nonsense Thoughts...

Spoiler

The story is exactly as explained in the summary and in other reviews. I'm totally being repetitive, but since I have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) I need to explain everything in an orderly and detailed manner. 🤯

Spoiler

Female lead Yu Qingjia, in her previous life was the Mary Sue (golden finger) main character that had a happy ending, while her half sister Yu Qingya, in that previous life had a horrible fate.

So in their second life, the half sister with the help of a System wanted to eliminate female lead and replace her as the main character. But through premonitory dreams, female lead discovered the plot.

While trying to survive, female lead faced another problem: her father that swear would never have another woman after the death of female lead's mother, brought a young and beautiful concubine to the house. The concubine was actually a disguise of the male lead Murong Ya, that was a Prince that was trying to survive and hide while strengthening himself to dethrone the tyrannical uncle Emperor.

[collapse]

But with my pettiness 😅, the behavior of the main character and the sexist story really annoyed me, since...

Spoiler

First, female lead was a childish fourteen years old girl. Of course, she was a spoiled noble young lady, so we could ignore her behavior.

But if you think that in Ancient Times, girls at the age of fourteen or fifteen were getting married and having child and men at that age could be crowned Emperors. So a fourteen or fifteen ancient youngster should be more responsible and mature.

Of course, this isn't realistic literature so in fictional novels, an Ancient young girl could behave like a teenager Modern young girl.

[collapse]

But it's something that I hate in Chinese Novels that portrays the Ancient Times...

Spoiler

... I started noticing that for me, majority of the novels I read about Ancient Times, the male leads are more mature at younger age than female leads.

Since male leads are normally going to become Emperors, Ministers or Generals that are going to deal with politics and wars and decide the future of empires and their people, they are always smarter, mature and more capable.

Meanwhile the female leads are somewhat childish or not so mature and not so smart, only becoming Empresses or Noble's Wives that can only deal with the harem or domestic and s*upid matters and sometimes even worse, they have to borrow the intelligence and power of the male leads to solve those internal domestic affairs. This is such a sexist mentality, that only reinforces the incorrect belief that men are inherently more valuable than women or superior in some way.

Of course, that was the reality of Ancient Times, the men, the Emperor are responsible for the nation's politics and the the women and Empress are responsible for the internal and domestic affairs of the harem and palace. But, for God's sake, again this is fictional, not reality. So why can't we have more strong female leads dealing with politics and the future of Empires?

(Oh dear God, where are my Chinese Mulans, the embodiment of strong and smart Ancient Women that changed and challenged the fate of nations? Despite Mulan being only a fictional character of a legend, it's true that throughout history really existed some intelligent and strong women leading armies and changing the fate of nations like the medieval French girl Joana D'arc)

[collapse]

But look the female lead of this novel that is a classical example of sexism in my opinion...

Spoiler

When she saw her father bringing a "concubine" home, she kept pouting and trying to argue with the "concubine". But instead, why she didn't act like a grown up and had a serious conversation with her father to understand why he was breaking his promise of not bringing another woman in the house?

Besides, she was trying to annoy and anger the "concubine" like a spoiled child, but while female lead was pouting and throwing tantrums, the "concubine" male lead that was only one year older, was training to govern an empire and become the next Emperor, surpassing female lead by leaps and bounds both in intelligence and strength.

We can see the big gap of their mentality and maturity in this situation when female lead asked her father who was more important, she, the daughter, or this "concubine" and her father avoid to answer, saying that he couldn't compare both, so she started crying, and the male lead "concubine" told her:

"Just a little matter can make you cry. It's really useless.

What's more, what is the use of crying?

You can't even fair well in both civil and martial arts (since we are both studying together), and now you are also abandoned by your father. What you should do now is to surpass me or expose me in front of Yu Wenjun (her father). Hiding and crying by yourself.

What is the use of it excepts to give me one more reason to laugh at you?"

That only shows how brainless female lead was... her father asked if she wanted to study politics and have horse riding and archery lessons together with the "concubine", but she said she didn't want to. In the end, she was forced to study and learn... 🙄

But Omg, she knew that the villainess of the story would try to kill and overpower her but instead of polishing herself and get more knowledgeable which maybe could help her to avoid death and defend herself, she didn't want to learn anything...

Meanwhile, the male lead that was in a similar situation in which the Emperor was trying to kill and overpower him, in a intelligent way, was sharping himself by learning the max he could, to survive and face the Emperor head to head.

[collapse]

Why the level of maturity and intellect are so different among the genders in some Chinese novels?

Spoiler

Maybe I'm exaggerating. It's just a silly novel, so why bother? But if we deeply think about it, isn't sexism to portray a young woman as childish, spoiled and brainless noble, while the male lead of almost the same age is portrayed as a smarter and more capable noble? 🙄

Of course realistically and historically speaking, in ancient times men always had more privileges than women, having access to education and being able to interfere in politics thus overpowering women. Also, women only had the right to vote around one hundred years ago and in a patriarchal world, women rights still have to be fought even in our modern times.

But for God's sake, this are fictional novels not reality. So why women can't be as capable as men in these Chinese ancient time novels?

I really wish to find novels like that...

[collapse]
[collapse]

Since I brought up the discussion about gender equality in Ancient Chinese Novels. I concluded this review with one of Mulan's speeches. A legend of 1500 years ago that was defending the ideal thoughts of equality of men and women. She said:

The male hare* wildly kicks its feet;
The female hare* has shifty eyes,

But when a pair of hares run side by side;

Who can distinguish whether I in fact am male or female?

hare* - a kind of rabbit

This paragraph tells that although there exist differences between genders, you cannot distinguish male and female when they are "running side by side". Figuratively, men and women can't be different when fighting together for the victory of the same ideals.

It’s a 3.5

I liked the novel but the flow of events wasn’t very smooth. The FL was a bit half assed... she was a little smart, she was a Mary Sue but that was useless to her. The ML story part was a bit funny at the beginning but then afterwards was meh. There were some interesting themes brought out but nothing was explored well enough.
Still the story was interesting, the romance part was bittersweet but more sweet than bitter. It was a good read overall

I love the writer's works, but this book's problem for me is the long winding inner monolog, especially the FL and the villain, and mostly repetitive words, back stories and their worries over and over again in the first fifty chapters, which is quite annoying and I skip most of them.

Hopefully, it'll stop in later chapters. *Begging

plus point, love the translator work, very smooth and nice.
