I suggest sticking with this story for a bit before making your mind up on the two leads. They're BOTH driven by being deeply insecure and it's a long journey to figuring out how to communicate with each other. I honestly really love it and despite a rough start it turns into a very sweet relationship.

I think you shouldn't judge the novel if you hadn't read enough to judge it as a whole.

As far as I can see. The development of Max is well done. I love how she made the decision to change
Spoiler

she's scared that she'll be discarded by ML because of her own incompetence and start hurting her ? As what her father did to her.

[collapse]
and start accepting help from others. At first you might think ' oh another misunderstanding' or a 'weak boring mc' but as the chapter continues you can see her development on how she's becoming more confident with herself since she basically knows nothing.

Honestly it might be frustrating at first since she can't speak her mind but remember she's been abused and neglected, so she has low self esteem. Don't expect a confident/calm MC if she has that kind of past.

I'm sure that her low self esteem is not gonna drag because of the tag 'Character Growth'. And I love how the ML loves her so much. Its so heartwarming. Even though he might misunderstand her, he doesn't judge her whole being just because of that misunderstanding.

It’s only been four chapters so far but I don’t see their relationship going too well, it’s rocky and their personalities don’t seem to match well.

It's SO good. Too many reviews are from people who barely read any of it... blargh. To be fair, it's hard to get your hands on the story.

The ML is far better of a person that he initially seems. No spoilers, but keep in mind he's: Insecure that he's not good enough for her, bitter that he can't give her more, afraid she won't love him, ignorant (and outright misled) of her real history, legit terrified that she could get hurt or he could lose her, and genuinely traumatized to... more>> a terrifying degree... despite all that explaining things, the walls he puts up and his short fuse can still be a bit much, so if you DON'T know all of that, you'll be like "wow, forget this dude" and possibly bail before you realize how powerful the love is between these two. And yes, it's powerful.

The FL is absolutely justified in how she behaves. Our sweet girl is broken and does what she can. You'll often be frustrated by her weakness, but she's a stronger soul that anyone that actually exists, so cut her some slack. Often, being innocent and naive leads to her being in difficult situations that can make you side with the ML's overprotective behavior... while also making you go "argh, give her more credit, dude". Both sides have valid points. Give them a chance.

The writing, plot, translation, characters, romance, drama, action, fantasy, developments, storyline that builds to something much larger, and delicious spice add up to a wonderful novel. It has a lovely R-15 comic as well. I've recommended the novel to people I know personally, and definitely recommend it to anyone considering reading it. Don't sleep on this or make hasty judgements. If you get the chance, give it a chance, too. <<less

(warning: a long confession of how much I love this book)

I don't read korean lightnovels until I came across the manhwa of Under The Oak and found thru hearsay that smut is hotter in the books lmao. I've been binge reading a bunch of kr novels since then. Unfortunately, Oak is still reigning the top spot in my heart.

Everything is just amazing. Riftan is so hot. Maxi is the cutest. And ruth is my husband.

The translation team that used to do the eng was great. It's eloquent. Even... more>> the writing style of the author is amazing which is why = perfect. So unfortunate that they had to stop. Also the immersion is chef's kiss. Among the books that I've read with similar plots, oak is the only one that really made me feel that I'm a part of their world. I was growing along side of maxi.

I saw a lot of comments that says the progress is too slow. Personally, as someone who loves slow burn, the pace of the story is perfect. In fact, it's realistic.

Spoiler

I also struggle with self-esteem and self confidence my whole life and letme just say, life wouldn't be suddenly perfect just because a hot loving husband popped in your life. So yeah, there's that.

[collapse]

Another thing that I looovveee in stories are the lovable side characters. The knights' funny banters is a lifeee! I could read a whole book just about them (theyre also so hot). Authors who can do that are so not common.

Really looking forward to the progress of riftan and maxi's relationship and life ㅠㅠ 파이팅 우리 애기들!

In conclusion, I love ruth and I need a riftan in my life! <<less

I'm estimating when I dropped this novel, although I'm not entirely sure.

I don't have any complaints about the ML and FL, in terms of their characters and personalities. What I do take issue with is the EXTENDED DRAMA from their horrendous communication in the relationship. They don't communicate. Yes, yes, they have back stories and trauma. But do we really have to drag their communication issues through the whole novel? It was frustrating.

I wanted to love it, and was so invested in it, but eventually dropped out of rising frustration.

MC is terrible at first just like ML, at least she has her excuses for being a coward, but ML, like all ML really, has become obsessive for no reason whatsoever. Just saw her one day, and that was it. She even went to war and nearly died and killed her subordinates for it.

Honestly, I still don't know if I like this novel or not, there were points that I liked more than I hated so let's leave this note and comment on what caught my attention in this novel.

Spoiler

The moment was when the princess and Max decide to use her excuse to be a mage so that ML could escape her father's accusations, after the beating she took from Riftan when she found out about the abuse, and also so that the protagonist could grow up training for three. Years away to be a real mage, and step out of her husband's shadow (or something).

[collapse]

Max was amazing in that part, although I didn't like how the author needed magic to solve the key point of the protagonist's problem, but what I liked the most was Riftan at that moment. When he says he's had enough and will stop loving her if Max really leaves.

WTF? It was Max's release and development moment and you talk about Riftan? Yes, here he really caught my attention.

It was a shock to me. A good shock. ML's are always obsessive, for no reason at all, and don't give up no matter what, in novels they always "love" until the end once they start. So it was a relief when he actually says he's going to let go. That he's tired of feeling miserable. Because whenever I read romance with ML's like this, I always ask myself "Doesn't he get tired? Can anyone really live like this? Isn't this similar to the villains who throw their lives away to get in the way of the protagonists' romance?"

At this point, I really didn't care anymore if they ended up together or not.

In fact, I really wanted Riftan to move on. That this obsessive love would be broken and that he could become a better person too. Because protagonists becoming strong we have thousands of stories like that, but an ML who actually manages to give up his obsession before a tragic end and move on is rare. Obsession is not love.

The development after that wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst. <<less

Attention negative reviewers, you NEED to read until over chapter 150-200 to understand the worldbuilding author create that contribute to the so called 'flaws' of both MC and ML

There's no secret from early chapters so no spoiler- that Riftan's behaviors and some other male characters that's not Ruth (the wizard) severely offend the feminist readers. However please remember the universe this story takes place is medieval era. It's not stated plainly but about over chapter 200 somebody stated plainly that woman's status is quite low. They're practically the property... more>> of their father and later their husband. Not to say Riftan treat Maxi like object, but this culture contribute to why Riftan is quite overbearing on what she could and could not do. He ACTUALLY by that world's standard, a very open minded and permissible husband by far. Of course by modern standard we feel he is restricting Maxi too much, but we shouldn't uphold him to our modern standard in the first place.

Maxi herself is abused since she was eight years old, and one of the charming points of this novel is her growth. It's really gradual and you can tell author tried to be as realistic as possible in each steps Maxi takes. This is not for the impatient readers but trust me, she is really growing!
    1. I am such a useless person, but I will at least try to decorate my home
    1. I am still useless, but my husband entrust me as lady of the house, I will do my utmost to look a bit competent
    1. Negative thought still there, my issues is not as important as my husband and our people!
More spoiler on the issue

Spoiler

Later on Maxi will befriend several ladies she learn more positive traits from, in particular is no other than Princess Agnes! Who is apparently more like Riftan's

second vitrolic best bud after Ruth and they actually think "yuck" about being matched to each other. She is the amazoness princess basically, very confident and more typical strong female lead. She quickly realize Maxi has the potential to be great and strong woman, and they have the desire to be more than just a lady. However unlike single Agnes, Maxi has a protective husband. Agnes I think is the most positive role model to Maxi. Agnes understand Riftan's behavior, but at the same time encourage Maxi to follow her footstep, overcoming limit of their gender.

[collapse]

Oh- and Ruth is the best chara aside from our main characters!

Most satisfying moment, even though it's terrible in hindsight.

Spoiler

Duke Croix revealed himself NOT to be a doting and noble father he sell himself to public. The knights who were still grumpy about Maxi being his daughter and not coming to Anatol for three years in Riftan's absence after marriage all got eureka slap on their face. They seem to just remember women in general aren't as free as Princess Agnes, I think being around her for years screw their common sense a bit LOL

It's a harsh reminder for them that of course even if Maxi wanted to, she has no say in that three years about being in Anatol of Croix Palace. So all this time they have blamed Riftan's misery at the wrong person.

I am so obsessed with this book, ever since it was recommended to me on the r/UnderTheOakTreeBook subreddit. It starts out as hardcore romance/smut, but once Maxi starts to learn some stuff (don't want to spoil anything), there is a lot more action and adventure.

  • I binge read this all in one day and it's a good story in the sense that the FL grows a lot from the time she leaves her abusive father till now (ch.257). She has steadily made changes to herself that are earned and don't just pop into her life now that she has a super hot, perfect (?) husband. ML on the other hand kinda sucks, he talks over her constantly and treats her like a child with the occasional insult and treats her like a doll, never stopping to listen to her answer.
    Spoiler

Not the biggest spoiler, but when Maxi says he treats her like she's only involved in his bedroom life, it true for the most part. Most interactions outside the bedroom are him getting angry at her or obsessing over her or giving her the cold shoulder because he has the emotional maturity of a preteen. He has the same mindset as the rest of the men in this world which is "your my wife, therefore my property and you must obey me" but this is supposed to be a romance not human trafficking. When for the first handful of chapters are her quaking and can't look him in the eye, all the while getting some "spicy" scenes tossed in there like that's supposed to make it feel like everything's okay.

Rating a story in a haste where the FL, initially portray as weak, who has not yet picked up her backpack to start her journey, is sooo unfair. 😥 The author is really good in building up the main character from scratch.

If you don't have patience and just looking for a plain-surface type of a story, dull, and cliche, this isnot for you.

I don't think it's fair to rate a story when you haven't yet reached near half of the novel.

This novel is so deep as it digs into the very... more>> core root of why the FL behaves like an empty shell. Fragile and yet thriving amidst the heavy storms come her way.

All she knew was she was useless. That's what had been engraved within her by her sadistic father. No one had cared for her deeply.

She was love-deprived. She couldn't express love when she didn't even know what it was. All she knew was fear. We cannot blame her for that. She dreamed of someone who could "rescue" her and taste the freedom. She had been treated lesser than a human. That's why her first instinct would be to hide inside her shell because of "fear" whenever she got into a humilhiating and unfamiliar situation or met someone intimidating.

But since she started living away from her father's roof, she was starting to grow. Like a little seedling finally getting sunlight.

Thanks to the good people she had met especially her husband, who, by the way, has also an inferiority complex.

She wanted to change for the better not only for herself but for the people she cared for more than her life.

Since this little seedling, the FL, is now receiving sunlight and rain, she is not as weak as before as long as the rootcause of her fear is out of the way and hopefully completely subdued.

She has become "useful" which made her happy, contrary to what her father had instilled in her. That's character development ya'll. <<less

For those who think ML is overprotective and too possessive, I think, he has a really bad trauma from his past or a loss of loved one, so maybe that's because he is afraid sth might happen to her (based on his worries and how much he likes Max and a feeling I sense from him but not completely because he's not the story's point of view) as for MC she is hurt hard and real bad from her cruel father. First because of running from her father and later... more>> because she fell for Riftan she really wants to make him happy. She thinks if he finds out about how and why her father treated her that way, so he may dislike her and leave her. But they don't talk about their worries, again because they don't want to show each other their weakness, let the other live so peacefully and happily.
this is so frustrating but I really hope they start talking about their worries and solve their problems together. But we all know they will find their own happiness ^^ <<less

One of the best out there. I have read bad reviews and honestly, I did not have the same sentiments though I respect them. But in the MC and ML's defense, their flaws were all very valid. Their characters have pretty good foundations and the Author pretty much made sure of that (check out Riftan's POV because boy, that was such an eye opener). Moreover, this novel has the best MC character development and it was such a joy to see MC blossom out as the story goes by. World... more>> build was pretty much clear and well thought out. The side characters were remarkable but its clear from the start that the story would mainly focus on the lives of the mains. It would catch and keep my attention even without the BS but boy, their matures scenes definitely kept me waiting for more.

Kudos to the Author for such a magnificent novel and I can't wait for more translated chapters. Thank you for the hardwork dear Translators! Such quality translations, thank you all so much. <<less

I found this masterpiece through its manhwa. This story might seem clichè but the way how each character compliments each other makes it unique. I have read bad reviews. I do not agree with them but still respect their opinions. But to those who wants tho read this wonderful novel, please do not be discouraged by negative reviews. See for yourself before any judgement.

Thank you very much to the translator for allowing me read this masterpiece in a language I can understand. Thank you for your hard work~ More power!

This is some good sh*t I tell you. Yes, the ML is a little harsh and rude to MC at the start and I admit it but after about chapter 30, his attitude started to get better so don't get swayed by it at the start of the novel. First of all, for someone who is abuse by his father, her behaviour is totally logical and you can see how much those childhood traumas affect her. It was not something that you see in the typical novel or manga. Usually,... more>> it was always some confident and over-powerful genius MC but this one is different. The MC started from the bottom and slowly work up from it and it just very refreshing to see it. Even tho it was quite slow, you can see how much had she improve from the start and it was very heart-warming. Also please take note that ML spend most of his time on the battlefield or improving his castle so you cannot really expect him to become a white knight or something like that. His attitude is something that he learns from childhood and something that you had to expected especially from the environment he living in. Anyway, I recommend it very much for everyone to read it and I hope you have a great time reading it. 😊😊 <<less

Well, it's a good smut story (it's hawt 🙈) but I'm not very much fond of the characters (except for Ruth, the wizard). The FL is so timid and pushover. It's all because of her damn father, but still I hope a bit mature thinking of her to not afraid about just everything. And also ML, please don't think about s*x all the time when you see her okay?! 🙄

Well, despite how I feel irritated to the both of lead characters, I want to see their growth, how they... more>> influence each others. 😎 And, I want to see more of Ruth too, 'Dear Ruth, please don't be so ruthless with your blunt words. '

Thanks translator for your hard work. 🤗 <<less
