If you happen to have a few minutes to spare, then don't hesitate to give this a try!

  • To sum it all up, 'Unconventional Blessing' is a realistic story about Xu Ji, a gay man, and the discrimination he goes through because of his orientation.
  • It has everything, be it love or hate, confusion or self-acceptance, fear or pride, every single emotion is there and is depicted at its best.
Don't ignore it because of the tragedy tag, the ending would make you more proud (of the MC) than sad.

The MC's puppy love ended up as a failure because the person he liked was homophobic and couldn't accept him, but that didn't stop the MC from accepting himself. The author's end note also mentioned that he later found someone who truly loves him back, therefore, I'd say it was a good ending.

Furthermore, the author's writing style is simple with everything described in a fair amount of detail, it almost reads like a poem, And this oneshot also had many meaningful lines that managed to hit me right in the feels.

But I felt it the most when it came from his mouth.

It felt as if my heart was being hollowed out.

My body was cold all over.

I wanted to cry for a moment.

But I'm strong.

I'm gay, but I'm not weak.

Homosexuality.

Everyone says it's disgusting.

But I never felt that I was wrong.

I just happen to like someone of the same gender as me.

It simply overcomes the existence of the positive and negative poles' mutual attraction.

I never felt that there was something wrong with me.

I don't think God is wrong.

I don't think homosexuality is wrong.

I don't blame the worldly vision.

I don't blame all of this.

I also don't regret it.

I see a world different from everyone else.

This [as in being gay] is an unconventional blessing.

Edit: Talking about the sham marriage issue tho, I doubt it was supposed to be likable to begin with... just like rest of the homoph#bia in this story, it was there only for realism and the mc's fake partner wasn't even shown for once so it wasn't that unbearable to read.

Sham/forced marriages of gay people in China and Taiwan are unfortunately too common (google it, you will find tons of results) so judging this part with western lenses is weird. You can hate the sham marriage, I do too, but... more>> it wasn't something the writer added for no valid reason.

LOVED IT!

I'm not good with words so finding the right ones to describe this brilliant piece of art will be hard for me. I can only say that reading this was the best decision of my life, the story and characters are well written, the writer's style is great and all the scenes are described in a beautiful way, even if you are not a gay person (I actually am but still, I assume yall would understand this too) you can empathize with message that this one shot is delivering. <<less

I wouldn't call this novel a tragedy but it was saddening for sure. I had this "lump in the throat" through most of the 2nd part of it. These close, almost real feelings, the first love, the heartbreak... it was all beautifully presented! And it's quite odd to see that someone would consider such a realistic portrayal bad because the author dared to write the cruel reality rather than a fantasy. If you were disgusted by the discrimination the main character faced in this novel, congrats.. that's the point.

I like the writer's style of writing. The storytelling is unusually relaxing, yet I can still feel the tension building up as the story progresses.

The plot is also realistic. Honestly, given the tragedy tag, I expected much worse of the outcome.

As it turns out, the story isn't even sad. It's about an unsuccessful puppy love, and in the end, they both just moved on with their lives. It's a happy ending for me, and I'm glad with the author's endnote too.

I'd rate it 4.5/5, with a deduction of 0.5 points because I wish there were more details about the characters' growth, rather than just a few sentences and then a time skip.

I liked it.

I appreciate the writing style which was so minimalistic and smooth. I just felt calm reading it.

This story really showcases the harsh reality of being homos*xual in such a society, even though it was really short.

I appreciate the realism in the story. Just one thing which I disliked was that MC apparently got married go a girl (a sham marriage) and I just don't like that kind of thing at all. Like these deceptive marriages disgust me. Otherwise the story is good. You should read it

The story is so short and it still managed to make me cry. It's really beautiful, like a poem. In just a few minutes, the author managed to make me root for MC, love him, feel bad for him, be proud of him, and shed tears for him. If this is not a good oneshot, then what is?

When MC says, "I'm strong. I'm gay, but I'm not weak, " my tears fell like waterfall, I tell you.

You could read the story within a few minutes, so you should really give... more>> it a try. It's worth it. <<less

I read this to feel the pain. Instead, I was given strong hearted MC. He fall in love, admits his true self and accepts negative reaction with generous understanding.

I really want to curse Chen Yuan. Okay if you feel disgusted when your bf confess his affection. He may acts cold since he felt betrayed. But his action of asking MC's spouse is male or female when MC announced his marriage, is out of the line. Ok, not everyone is open-minded and accepted. But everyone has common sense. It's so good... more>> they never ended together. <<less

What a strong MC. The story was also very realistic. Not something that was tragic no, but something that made me smile after reading the whole thing. I came looking for tragedy and found this lovely work. I definitely recommend this!
