After rejecting his childhood friend due to h*mophobia, he ends up bending himself to pursue love.

On the eve of graduation, Jiang Lin received a confession from his childhood friend, Ji Minglun, on his birthday.

At that time, everyone in the private room was drunk, and only he and Ji Minglun were somewhat sober. Jiang Lin, who was homophobic, took Ji Minglun’s confession as a boring joke from a game of Truth or Dare. However, he didn’t expect that later, back in their hotel room, Ji Minglun cornered him against the wall and gave him a hot, wet kiss that awakened unfamiliar desires.

The friendship that had lasted for sixteen years was completely overturned. That night, he fled in embarrassment and even advanced his date to study abroad, flying to Los Angeles with his luggage.

For the entire year that followed, he disappeared, making it impossible for Ji Minglun to find him. Until the next summer came, he could no longer suppress his longing and decided to return home to test if Ji Minglun still liked him. However, he discovered Ji Minglun embracing someone else, looking at him coldly as if they didn’t know each other.

The somewhat clumsy bottom (Jiang Lin) who is proud and aloof on the outside x The hard-mouthed yet honest in his physical reactions top (Ji Minglun)

The top has not changed his heart and has not had ambiguous relationships with anyone else.

The bottom starts off as homophobic but later bends himself and returns to pursue the top.

There is a slight age difference; the bottom is a few months younger than the top.

[Not angst] [Not angst] [Not angst] , the overall reading experience is a mix of sweet and sour.

An enjoyable read, I’m glad they got their 2nd chance. The MC is an introvert so it was hard for him to properly express himself especially when he suddenly left year ago so he doesn’t know if the ML had given up on him and moved on and the ML didn’t know if the MC just wanted to have a friendship like they had previously so that’s why it took sometime for them to really open up on how they felt but after they did it was really sweet.

first off, I don't know why the novel summary insists that MC is a homophobe or super straight when the only indication is that once (1) MC saw two guys kissing and felt confused and weirded out because he had never thought of it before. The ML saw that and assumed he was homophobic (like the others in the school were) because he's in love with MC and was overly anxious about the whole scene. MC has a roommate who does drag and MC is close friends with him and... more>> never shows any disgust or stuff, and he actively searches for answers for his confusion when ML kisses him. He's more afraid about ruining the bond between him and ML because they both have been together as friends for years and the idea of romance is terrifying to him.

Also, MC is not 'super straight', he never dates or shows any interest in girls, he just assumed he would marry one some day because heteronormativity and that's what the people around them do.

The novel opens with MC coming back and trying to reconnect with ML because he's sure of his feelings and also wants to make amends for his behaviour. The novel is both slow burn and also not, because both MC and ML love each other, but before they get together they need to reconnect and trust each other again, especially since MC broke ML's heart by cutting him off. It's a good, slow novel that isn't dragged out because it only has 53 chapters where MC pursues ML and ML is afraid of reading too much into it and getting hurt again. If anyone is concerned about the whole 'straight guy bends after being homophobic' trope, then don't worry about it, it's really not like the summary makes it seem. Also, MC is a very quiet and sweet person who is slow in emotional matters but not an AH. He has always loved ML but it wasn't until the kiss which made him panic and flee that he realized that he also felt romantic love and desire for ML. This is all established in the first few chapters so no major spoilers for the novel either. <<less

I actually want to give this story 2.5 stars, but that's not possible sadly.

I never thought I'd feel bad for a character who's described as a homophobe in the synopsis... but here I am.

Jiang Lin isn't actually a homophobe, he just doesn't understand his sexuality and is scared off when his best friend makes a drunken physical advance on him. Honestly, I think anyone would be scared if their best friend that they grew up with forcibly kissed them while drunk. The way Jiang Lin handled it was terrible, sure,... more>> but Ji Minglun definitely shares some fault there.

Jiang Lin did something pretty crap, but... He only did one thing that was crap, and then he finally came back, figuratively on his knees, begging for forgiveness. But he only ever receives scorn, the cold shoulder, or blatant disregard for their past friendship.

I'm not saying Ji Minglun had to forgive him, but man...

Let's get this out of the way: The note in the synopsis of [Not angst] [Not angst] [Not angst] isn't true. Multiple times the author's note at the bottom of a chapter had to basically spoil the story for their readers because of complaints they were probably making specifically about the angst going on. This isn't an exaggeration, and it happened way too often for a story that's labelled "Not Angst".

Also "The top has not changed his heart and has not had ambiguous relationships with anyone else" is only barely close to the truth. Ji Minglun acts completely ambiguous with a couple of people in an attempt to make Jiang Lin go away, and see that he can live happily as a gay man without his friendship. He also continues to let Jiang Lin have misconceptions about his relationships with other despite understanding very clearly how Jiang Lin sees them. Then Ji Minglun actually very nearly moves on from his love of Jiang Lin, attempting to shift their relationship to purely friendship. There's literally a chapter titled "letting go" that is about him attempting to move on by shifting his attitude towards Jiang Lin. And the tone of the chapter basically makes it seem like he really is moving on and only considering Jiang Lin as a friend. This is more devastating to Jiang Lin than just staying mad at him. The author even puts a note at the end of the chapter about it because they know that it's going to be misinterpreted.

Finally there's Dang Yi. There's nothing more off-putting in a story than a character that refuses to take no for an answer. If it were a man in her place, constantly pestering someone to be in a relationship with them when they've been repeatedly turned down, people would be throwing hands. But Dang Yi is just tolerated for the majority of the story, even her brother just brushes her behavior off and tells Ji Minglun to "get fat and maybe she'll stop liking you." (I'm paraphrasing). She also is the perpetrator of the majority of the misunderstandings in the late story. She constantly tries to convince Ji Minglun that he could just try it despite knowing that he's gay. She seems to think that because her brother likes both men and women, so must all gay men. If this were a straight man telling a lesbian woman "how do you know if you don't try", they'd be slapped on the spot. She even assaults Jiang Lin at one point.

The story labels itself as sweet and sour love, but it's about 60% sour, 20% misunderstandings, and 20% sweet.

It wasn't what I was expecting at all. Had the synopsis not tried so hard to list the story as "Not Angst", I might have been more generous about my rating. I don't mind a story that's reasonably angsty, but don't falsely advertise. <<less

I swear one day I’ll purge the misunderstanding trope, but I confess... it more or less always sets the table for a really good drama.

Story was what I expected. ML confesses to MC, MC is taken aback & hides away abroad to reflect on his feelings, MC comes back to now chase after ML. It’s straightforward & as much as I just wanted them to kiss & make up from day 1... I also appreciated that it took time for the two to settle their feelings. A year can change... more>> a person significantly & seeing them be awkward around each other was sooo juicy to read for me. I like the drama ok. Pretty cute read to pass the time <<less
