All Chu Lian had done was to read a book where the female lead had cheated on her wonderful husband. While wondering why, before she knew it, she was waking up in the body of that very same female lead!

Wait, did that mean the handsome husband from the book was hers now? Chu Lian decided to welcome him with open arms!

However, what she got wasn’t the kind husband she had been expecting. Instead, his personality seemed to have been completely flipped! He left her all alone on their wedding night… and just five days into their marriage, her dear husband abandoned his loving wife and left to enlist in the army!

Fine! Be that way! She could pass her days perfectly well somehow, even if she had to do it alone!

Chu Lian put her household in order, charmed the rest of her new family, and did a little business on the side. She even opened up some new trade routes! Her days passed peacefully and leisurely… Until her dear husband got into trouble at the frontline of the war.

Hmph, isn’t he crawling back to me for help in the end? Forget it, I’ll go save him myself!

MC and ML Characterization: 3/5
Supporting Cast: 4/5
Plot and Pacing: 2/5
Setting/Concept Execution: 3/5
Translation: 5/5

Notes: My ratings are all over the place, sort of like the story itself. At times I really liked the MC and ML, other times I wanted to drop kick them into the sun. I enjoyed how smart the MC was in most situations, but then she seemed to eat s*upid for breakfast whenever she interacted with the ML. And the ML was fine sometimes, but then other times he could be creepy abusive... more>> even after he and the MC resolved their differences. The food p*rn was a delightful superpower for the ML to have -- it was a nice change to have a female transmigrator have a useful skill that wasn't medical -- but it stretched my suspension of belief a bit on how bad the native food was portrayed.

I loved the concept of having one of them be a transmigrator and the other reincarnated and remembering the story as it was before -- such a great way to set up an ongoing misunderstanding that wasn't easily resolved. But then, when they finally did discover the truth about each other, it was almost completely glossed over and not addressed/discussed at all. So disappointing after 700+ chapters to completely ignore the resolution of the core concept. I'm baffled by the author's decision to do that. <<less

I almost didn't read this book because of some of the reviews, but I'm so glad I read it, and read it twice. In no way is this novel perfect but the beauty of this story comes from the small interactions of the male and female leads. I really love the progression of their relationship.
Spoiler

After their wedding and a few interactions, the ML and FL were separated for so many chapters, and this is where the FL developed her character and her relationship with the people around her except her husband.

While he is in the army, there were some exchanges of letters between the Chu Lian and Changdi and this is where their relationship starts. (The FL transmigrated to the body of the ML's wife, but the male lead suffered and died in his previous life because of his wife and her lover, thus he wanted revenge when he reincarnated, but he couldn't kill the wife because of his family.) She's a naturally caring person who only wants to live peacefully with good food and laze around and her actions in the capital have positively advanced her husband's army career. Later, she followed him to the north where he is serving as a soldier in order to look after him and find a medicinal flower in the mountain close by and their relationship grows from here on.

[collapse]

What I love are the small things she does for her husband and the people she cares about, like sharing good food and sharing her blessings with them. And this is where the male lead eventually started caring for her. What I love is that the FL didn't need to act like a female lotus nor had she need to act like a tough female to get the man, she naturally took care of him like making sure that he gets a comfortable bed, giving him some gloves and feeding him good food.

The antagonists here are seriously small minded and petty but there are some good characters that becomes friends with the male and female leads that I wished the author have spent a little more time expanding their stories maybe like in a side story or something. That's why the ending seemed rushed.

I would definitely recommend this book. The romance at the beginning is almost non-existent, but the characters development is solid and the food p*rn is heaven, esp the translators at volare took the time to post pictures of the food. The romance is there and it is not sickeningly sweet, but just a good measure of a good relationship between two people who share a life and love together amidst some people who wanted to tear them apart.

This is the best boy x girl novel I've ever read, number one in my list of BG novel..

MC is smart, charming, not too cunning but quick witted, and the ML is not that tyrant but kind of cool, handsome, strong, caring but quiet male lead. Ah and he is possessive too but not too overbearing. The plot is good, and I've finished binge reading 700 plus chapters in just three days. Worth my time and

tough. Love it! Recommended

This novel is so good!!! Though the rebirth troupe is cliche, this one did not disappoint.

I love how ‘normal’ the MC was portrayed. If you’re looking for an smart and knows how to handle things maturely, I RECOMMEND THIS!!!

A pretty good read, I would give it a 3.5/5.

The development of the relationship between MC and ML was definitely what kept the novel going. ML was an as*hole in the beginning based on how he treated her, but he had his reasons. It was quite funny to see how bewildered MC was about his attitude. All she wanted to was to live a simple, comfortable life with him. While she didn't understand why he treated her the way he did, she also didn't let it affect her and just... more>> continued on living. It was nice to see how her actions slowly changed his mind about her over time and he began to differentiate between the now MC and the MC he thought she was. The romance later on was cute to read, but it wasn't very exciting either. ML is the typical obsessive ML and wants to possess her.

For me, the plot definitely dragged when ML left to go North. I wasn't very interested in MC's restaurant business nor her interactions with his family and skipped some chapters. The political schemes of this novel was quite boring as I wasn't invested in those characters. I did like how she developed friendships with strong female characters though.
Spoiler

The idea of the original soul trying to take revenge was good, but I felt like the author didn't do the storyline justice. She was easily dealt with.

[collapse]

The ending of the book felt very rushed. The last few chapters became a summary of everything that happened.
Spoiler

Her real identity as the Emperor's illegitimate daughter had no affect on the storyline.

The relationships between the side characters also fell flat. <<less

Did Chu Lian apathy bother me at this point? Not really. For now, I could appreciate a MC who decided other people thoughts and actions were none of her business.

Was the ML the worst at this point? Not really. He choked her on their wedding night but there’s been worse ML who were later redeemed so I was hoping that would be the case for this story.

What’s really bothering me is that the author expects us to believe that every time she’s walks into an ancient China kitchen, her food... more>> comes out perfect.

  • first of all, just changing kitchens in modern times is enough to make me flustered.
  • Second I’m supposed to believe that she’s able to use all these old time equipments and ingredients to make 21st century meals perfectly. Tiny details but I would have gotten over it if the author acknowledged that limitation but nah, the MC would just come into any kitchen and throw down. Like how sis?!?! You can’t even control the temperature on an ancient oven.

This story is from start to end about a woman that was honest to her self and the people around her. Coming from the past and knowing that you can't escape your current life and doing your best to live well. I loved it. Many ridiculous situations made my day.

Pf course it has all those clichés but I love it just the way it is.

I recommended it as a light read.

MC is totally a foodie and cute! This novel isn't very heavy-reading, and it's enjoyable 'til the end. I love the story flow, and there's no wasted arc. I recommend this novel for reading!

Obviously, it was not a perfect story. But Chu Lian is a fun character to follow because she's not too calculative, and she's lazy so she knows when to cut her loses, or where to spend her energy, and I really like that. I can't help but laugh when she laments how people can't leave her alone because she just wants to laze around.

Plus, as a foodie myself, this series is a real treat for me, I got to discover food that I might try in the future.

I am... more>> neutral about romance and is especially lukewarm to He Changdi (ML), I just really followed the series because of Chu Lian, and her interactions with her friends.

I like that some of the villains are not too dumb, and that there are fixed events that she can't change.

Hmmm, what else. You can't help but root for Chu Lian, I guess. Since she's clearly an underdog.

If you're in for romance, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you want to read about underdog stories + foooood, this is for you. <<less

Honestly, after this, I will probably dislike every other similar book.

The male lead is very tsundere, and honestly shows realistic behaviour if such thing DID happen to you. He has very high IQ with very low EQ. So beware, he is sometimes forceful.

The female lead, I have to say, a bit Mary Sue, I mean come on, does this woman managed to be pro in every economical aspect in modern world? Other than that, she was fine, she didnt provoke pity for me, however I did found some of her... more>> behaviours believable, her EQ is quite low too however, not as much as ML (no one can beat him in that aspect lol)

If you like seeing bunch of food, a bit violent ML, extremely a lot usage of "almost eyes" and "noises made with lips during sleep, or eating", I hated that last lip part honestly.

For pros, the translator is already a group I read, they are very good, the story itself is fast-paced enough, but not too much. Ending is but abrupt, otherwise, if you like Passive Aggressive ML and Transmigration stories, you would probably like this. <<less

This novel was a joy to read initially. I dropped it quite a few times but finally decided to finish it because I was almost done.

The FL was carrying the plot on her own and it was so interesting to read. The ML was also understandable, I could see where he was coming from.

HOWEVER. Once the romance starts, there is a huge downward spiral in quality and character.

I would recommend this novel for the first part. Afterwards, not so much.

Translator put a lot of effort in this one. There're pictures of good food and links to recipes etc.

I think overall, the story's pretty nice. I love the part where she's doing business and cooking all this great stuff. The ML becomes very infatuated with her. I feel that it's a little sudden though, the way he changed his mind.. Though he doesn't show it at first.

Really like the personality and character of the female lead. She is at turns, mature (in a light-hearted way) and cute. I like how... more>> even though she can be cunning when people tried to take advantage of her, she still retains an untainted outlook in life.

Towards the end, when the couple have reconciled their feelings for each other, the ML lead becomes quite demonstrative with his affections. I thought the plot kind of slow down from there (after they returned to the capital).

It's quite a light-hearted read. And kudos to the translator for finishing 709 chapters and updating regularly! I really appreciate it and admire her dedication in completely translating this story. <<less

The novel just finished translation today and just want to leave my personal views out there. For those who don't want to read the whole thing:
The Good: Early story buildup, food, translation quality
The Bad: one dimensionally bad guys, extremely rushed ending
The verdict: 3.5/5. I recommend it. It's worth the time I've sunk into it. It went down from 4.5 to 3.5 due to the unsatisfactory ending.

The novel as a whole is gr8 but does have it's fair share of faults. The translation quality is great just as... more>> I've come to expect from this translation team. It's completely worth the time I've spent with this novel.
Starting with the good stuff. The novel has quite a good build up during the first 400-500 chaps. A good sense of mystery prevails as we get to know more of the story. The translators have done a good job with the translation and also making the readers hungry with the foodgasmic pics scattered throughout the series. I personally don't like the cliche CN op MC cultivation genius bs. So I'm glad there's barely any of that here. The good guys are likeable and their interactions r entertaining.

Now let's talk of the bad. As likeable as the good guys r, the exact opposite is for the bad guys. All of them are so unlikeable and just one dimensionally bad. Feel sad that their actions don't reflect human decision making sometimes. Some good guys make such an abrupt change to the bad side it's s*upid. (No they weren't hidden bad guys. They just switched personalities it felt LUL)
As good as the buildup is of the first few hundred chaps the ending is just as rushed. The ending to this novel is the most rushed one I've ever seen. Inspire of that I've enjoyed this novel thoroughly and I believe that implies that for all it's faults it's a good read. <<less

The start is good but I really don't like the Male lead attitude so I'm dropping. It was understable that male lead is a bit mean on the start of the story cause he has a reason. Besides the female lead find ways to counter it which was fun. Sadly as they finally clsoe together. Male lead started to turn into a pe*vert who have no consideration to the female lead.

Saitama reviews have better explanation for this problem...

I'll dropping this sadly

Originally I'd like to give 5 stars rating because the translators are doing great job. But I decided to give 4 stars because in my opinion that the last quater of the story, the plot was getting ridiculous. I felt like the story line was being forced to give main characters some reasons for "face slapping" action and the ending was rush.

The story was starting in a good pace and nice plot but I feel a little bit disappointed for the ending. Don't get me wrong, ... more>>

MC is cute and the food in the novel is delicious and very nice to read about. She has no overpowered cheat honestly unless you count her ability to cook which is only a cheat since she's from the modern world. The ML is disappointing in the novel, the fact is his whole family, her whole family and all the antagonists are pretty disappointing as a whole. There are only about 2-3 characters in the novel that don't seem to have it out for the MC even though she just... more>> wants to be a lazy wife. I for one am very glad that most of the initial chapters are focused on her, the MC. <<less

Different from the usual boring ass doctor/assassin type of novel from the usual.

I Enjoy the misunderstanding between the Protagonist since that's the main focal point of the novel to those who's complaining about the food filter and the misunderstanding then get the f*ck out of here, it's the same as the a Xianxia without the antagonist, boring dulled and s*upid, and some of them even said that the protagonist "apathetic idiot" their personality is normal which in most xianxia are exaggerated especially the protagonist, Anyway 4.0 Stars since even though... more>> the romance is great it still lack the jealousy and drama which I liked to spice things up with, In the latest chapter though

Nice food p*rn story, later on she fights with her husband less and he starts to hate her less. I kind of didn't like their not so hateful interactions but that's just me. Probabaly used to the story of them not liking each other, it's been that way almost 300 chapters straight so the change feels off.

Cute story the transition of them not hating each other or indifference is a bit off but I guess its reasonable in a way.

Wish she took credit for her achievements.

This is a fun read. I like how pragmatic the MC is. Unlike some of the more emotional MCs who are ruthless and take everything to extremes, she is much more tolerant and does not bother much with people's insults. She is able to let things go. Her character flaws are that she is lazy and childish, but she still gets things done. She knows her limitations and is fully aware that her strong suit lies in cooking and design and maybe some business skills only. She knows some self-defense,... more>> but she's not a fighter and knows it's better to run for her life. Likewise, she doesn't know miscellaneous things like music. She practices calligraphy every day to become decent at that. She works hard and is lucky thanks to her hard work, but she's not a Mary Sue.

I've really enjoyed seeing her overpower everyone with her food, despite being the underdog.

I'm not interested in romance, so I hope it doesn't bog down the story too much when it appears. Considering how much fun it's been so far, I'm optimistic about how it continues.

UPDATE: I used to like this series, and then chapter 404 happened.
Spoiler

The MC barely escapes with her life while the ML, who is her husband in name only and doesn't have a romantic relationship with the MC, strips her and gropes her chest so hard, he leaves bruises. She wake up after fighting for her life with someone attempting to r*pe her. He shows no consideration, self-control, or common decency whatsoever.

[collapse]
I am disgusted. I cannot like the ML anymore, and I want him dead even more than the villain. How can you have a relationship with someone who blatantly violates your trust? I am strongly considering dropping this series. <<less

Not a bad story but not great either. The pacing is really slow in my opinion. I've tried to read a head in the raws and not much is happening.

I do like how her power is food but I hate how she allows some s*upid misunderstandings to happen. She has no problem proving herself but she just can't tell the other guy to stop... she seriously just stands there and says nothing.

I really stay around to see how she impresses with food. As the restaurant and romance isn't anywhere to... more>> be seen yet.

Overall not a waste of time but not worth all the 5 stars. <<less
