All Chu Lian had done was to read a book where the female lead had cheated on her wonderful husband. While wondering why, before she knew it, she was waking up in the body of that very same female lead!

Wait, did that mean the handsome husband from the book was hers now? Chu Lian decided to welcome him with open arms!

However, what she got wasn’t the kind husband she had been expecting. Instead, his personality seemed to have been completely flipped! He left her all alone on their wedding night… and just five days into their marriage, her dear husband abandoned his loving wife and left to enlist in the army!

Fine! Be that way! She could pass her days perfectly well somehow, even if she had to do it alone!

Chu Lian put her household in order, charmed the rest of her new family, and did a little business on the side. She even opened up some new trade routes! Her days passed peacefully and leisurely… Until her dear husband got into trouble at the frontline of the war.

Hmph, isn’t he crawling back to me for help in the end? Forget it, I’ll go save him myself!

For a book that has 709 chapters, I remain woefully blank while writing a review for it. Since it's somewhat tough to encapsulate all that happens, let me list it in short.

- Food p*rn. Lots of it, at least in the beginning. It is well done and makes up an interesting part as our MC uses a lot of modern recipes that she has collected over time as a traveller and food connoisseur.

-Strong female relationships. This is probably the only good relationship in this book. The friendship our MC forms... more>> with most of her new acquaintances are long lasting and without ulterior motives.

-as*hole husband. Ok, he reincarnated and thinks his wife is the adulterous schemer, but he's also very very dumb. Who tries to mu*der their wife on the wedding night?? And the fact that his wife comes around from that is just...
He does come around when he realises she isn't acting as she used to, but the author tries to make him cool and aloof too much. The developing romance feels rushed and lack luster.
(It says something when her brother in law treats her better than her own husband).

Which brings me to the next point.

-The ML's brothers. He Changqi and He Changjue have better personalities and I'd want them as the ML more than He Changdi. That should say it all.

-The underlying plot. Which is so underdeveloped, it's basically nonexistent. It's as if half way through the book the author realised you can't just have food in the story. It is rushed and dumped all at once on you. There is no foreshadowing or inkling, the "villains" come out of nowhere and are defeated so easily one wonders how they managed to even create a mess in the first place.

All in all, come for the food and feminism, complete it because, well, you've read 650 chapters already, so why not read another 50?

The translator has done a WONDERFUL job, though. And put a lot of effort in, also providing pictures to each and every food item mentioned in the book. Kudos to them! <<less

Simply put, every single character (including ML and MC) are either ret*rded, cliche or delusional. Throughout the book, there was not one character that I actually liked. Plot is non existant. Romance is fcking painful to read and their relationship is completly one sided.

ML just treats MC as his tool to vent and Although MC gets mad, she doesnt do anything. Everytime the ML is completly in the wrong cuz of his communication issues and MC ends up apologizing. ML's way of apologizing is to just f*ck her without her... more>> consent. In only one of their s*xual interactions did MC actually want to have s*x and every other time it was ML forcing himself onto her despite her complaints. MC says doesnt want trouble but she's actually just a doormat saint template.

ML and main antagonist are both Yanderes. As much author wants to call ML a Tsundere, he's simply not. He physically hurt MC so many times and r*pes her daily after ch 500.

The amount of cliche tropes in this is simply befuddling. Every single ancient china drama cliche you can think of, it's in here. If you're just reading this cuz you liked the premise and the first 100 chapters, I suggest you drop this when ML finally decides to love MC. After that point, this novel progressively drops from a 3.5* to 0*.

There s just so many reasons to hate this novel but what really killed it for me was the relationship between ML and MC.

I d rate this (Made me wanna commit su*cide) /5 <<less

This novel has an interesting premise, but never really takes off. CL (the main character) is a very lazy protagonist, so a lot of the mysteries in the original novel are only revealed through forced villain monologues. There's almost no description of the political landscape and extremely little about what HCD (the male lead) does to build up his political and military power. The inner courtyard scheming is especially s*upid in this novel since the villains are mostly morons who can't set up an effective plot, and due to the... more>> lack of focus on the imperial politics, there isn't a lot that's interesting about the grand scheme of things, either.

HCD and CL's romance is painful to read about. 1/4 of the later chapters describe food or this couple's s*xual misadventures. CL seems to equate s*x with suffering, and HCD never takes no for an answer. Then the author likes to spend lots of words on describing how terrible their s*x is. And apparently, HCD is the sort who feels comfortable

, WTF.

I started reading the translated novel a while ago but decided to finish it in Chinese because I'd lost interest in it and mostly wanted to skip to the ending. I would say that the novel retained my interest until the couple returned from the north, and then it got boring. If you want to read about a lazy wife... Eight Treasures Trousseau had a more likable couple and more interesting scheming. <<less

I like this.

Characters are nice, plot twist are decent, business management is quite up to date and reasonable, translation is great and thriving.

romance has it's own twist, fluff and flaw. Something realistic that shows every relationship needs extra work, patience and understanding from both sides, sadly more from a woman's part which rings true even in modern society.

The only downside for me is the cannon fodders, I wish they had more depth to them. Most cannon fodder are simplified, but it's a light read after with only 330 chapter after... more>> all. Translator split it and make it to 660 chapter might felt very short for readers who are used to binge read. Beware, Timebun's pictures of cuisines will make you drool, keep your mouth and device at safe distance. <<less

at start was brilliant her relying on herself to do everything

All the food making was funny

Gradually ever since the reincarnated husband fell for her it has went down due to her relying on him to much

No longer is the angry misunderstanding communication between them which gave it a twist compared to other novels

Hope it goes better

The villain is annoying and persistent

I usually avoided Chinese light novel, mostly because of the confusing terms, BUT this light novel is really, really, interesting. I read all 390ish chapter in around 2 days and sacrifice my beauty sleep, because this is real good, I tell you. MC was likeable, calm and calculating, while ML was too focused, the interaction between MC and ML was funny and fluffy in my opinion.

This plot is great, because no matter what the MC did, somehow the 'story' seems to turn around to get the plot moving. More importantly,... more>> food takes important part of the story <3 thumbs up <<less

I absolutely reccomend tgis book if you are looking for a LN that isnt too heavy, too bloody and too steamy. Lol, just ignore the steamy part.

I would like to put a few spoilers but in the end, I guess you find out by yourself is better. On the rough picture, the original CL isnt dead completely, surprising turn of CL origins, how Sanlang and CL turns every situation to their favour, and the best part is, mostly like the real insight of marriage life.

This is not for everyone.

First, the good points:

There is fluffy romance, lots of interesting food descriptions (do not read while hungry), and some great slice of life moments.

... more>> Timebun is one of the better translators out there, will post pictures of the food mentioned in the story, and even hangs out in the comments sometimes.

Now, the bad:

The main character is the most competent woman in the story; plenty of time is devoted to showing how s*upid and inferior those who dislike her are, and every moderately moral or intelligent character likes her. She is, in short, a Mary Sue.

If you can't take the occasional intermission in the plot just to see the main character completely outclass a "hater", maybe skip this one. Otherwise, it's pretty good. <<less

I read up to chapter 109 in two days!

The story has been a lot of fun so far.

I usually tire of food novels, but this one manages to make food a large focus without spending forever describing everything.

If I had to find something to criticize, I would say that some of the characters haven't been seen in a while so I forgot their names (e.g. The 2nd martial arts guard for the protagonist).

There has been only once when I noticed totally self-serving logic that doesn't match reality, which was ... more>>

One of my favourite genre. I love all these transmigrated female MC novels. I like the MC. She's calm and cute. The ML seems like a childish brat due to his obsession for revenge. But I think he'll change later on. Reading this novel will make you hungry with all those food description.

HOWEVER. The chapters are too darn short. This is just like Hidden Marriage all over again. Better wait for the chapter to pile up and binge it later or you'll suffer just like me.

Started off well, developed well, but when you get closer to the end the quality lowers.

Spoiler

Not to mention her being the emperor's secret daughter, the 180 of the grandmother and them treating her like she's 80 when she's less than 50.

The male lead, I truly dislike, there's violence on his part, and dubcon. I really am not sure why she stays with him.

Her methods of earning money is the most interesting about the story. I really preferred the part of the novel when it was focused on her.

The MC is actually fairly likable and has a defined personality. She's laid back but hard working and she doesn't panic easily. She isn't a completely generic self-insert and she isn't passive. The translation is also pretty good and includes lots of food pictures. This is why we have two stars and not one.

The problem is that she is completely overpowered (seriously, a modern girl who is highly independent is thrown into Ancient China and can somehow perform as an obedient, well mannered, filial daughter? And can also coolly avoid... more>> assassins? And cook at a level above everyone else?) and the entire plot is just people fawning over her. Apparently, the entire history of Chinese cuisine can be summed of as "bland and gross" so her modern food blows people away.

Narratively, she is always right and people who don't bow down before her are treated as jokes. The worst example of this is with her husband. In a story sense, they should be the perfect foils for each other and it could have been a great way to play with two really common tropes: how different are isekai stories when the character has lived through a story vs just read the story? His hatred for her is actually fairly justified--she completely ruined him in his past life after all. A slow burn where they understand each other and he realizes she's different and deals with the emotional fallout would have been interesting! But instead, he's treated as a petty villain for not falling over in praise of her and the unfortunate things that happen to him when he runs up against her plot armor are treated as jokes.

Separately, I can't believe I read nearly 200 chapters of a story that I rated two stars, what am I doing with my life? <<less

Started out decently, and the FL wasn't OP with knowledge unlike other novels, so I enjoyed reading about her going form strength to strength.

Unfortunately the rest of the characters (especially antagonists) seemed to have a paper thin lack of depth. Characters that appeared decent and rational at the start suddenly turned disgusting with no hope of redemption. "... so and so was not s*upid and could see through the tricks played..." etc, previously intelligent suddenly became s*upid when the author decided it was their turn to make trouble for the... more>> FL.

Ending was also ridiculously rushed and finished in a single chapter. <<less

TLDR: Overrated book, waste of time, only read if you like food

PROS:

  1. Detailed description about cooking and eating food
  2. The way FL runs businesses (I study business so it's somewhat interesting)
  3. FL not obsessed with face slapping (thank god) and actually has a brain
CONS:

There's a lot of minor problems with this book, but that's common with all novels, so I'll just list the major ones:

  1. If you're looking for fluffy romance, there's a lot of other books that do it better. Like 2/3 of the book is super frustrating in terms of romance since ML is s*upidly dense and h**ny, and FL unrealistically reverting into a s*upid teenager personality with love matters (she has no love experience, but her mental age is like 25... unrealistic). And honestly the forced s*x takes away from the romance imo.
  2. So many fillers...709 chapters for an average cliche plot. Pacing is slow
  3. If you're looking for plot/political scheming... it's pretty average, not that much depth. Again, many other books do it better
  4. 2-D, zero IQ villainess characters. Literally the moment they show up you already know they'll be dead in a few chapters... author just put them in for "face slapping" and fillers. Not all characters are like that, but there are quite a few of these braindead ones
  5. Similar to other reviews, I hate the way FL and author dealt with that @!#% Xiao... most frustrating part of this book.
Spoiler

Regarding other reviews, ML's treatment of FL in beginning may be justifiable... if we actually knew what happened to him in previous life since author never mentions anything specific. ML's actions were super unrealistic though, he hated her to death at the beginning but only resorted to petty revenge (like stealing food from your mortal enemy? wtf??)

This is my first review on novelupdates ever, all because #5 triggered me so much and the lackluster ending...I only finished the book because I'm stuck at home due to COVID with nothing to do -_- <<less

It's okay, no more no less.

The main idea was good but some elements were only added to create drama and had no real connection to the main plot.

It isn't the worst novel I've read but it's definitely not the best.

I really like this book into the ML became relevant. There was so much lead up and I was hyped to love the ship. But this guy literally uses every opportunity when the FL is unconscious or injured to kiss and touch her. All these non concentual advances are supposed to be cute but I found it disgusting and entirely disagreeable. And it’s not like the book has much to offer outside of the promo romance. So once that failed I dropped the book.

I lasted until Chapter 676. I can't read this any more. I gave up all hope. I won't say anything bad about this novel, since every person who disliked it before me already did that in their reviews. I gave it one big star for the beginning of the novel and for its excellent translation, it was very entertaining, gripping even. And from there it went downhill all the way. It's a novel that doesn't reveal its characters or a world, or two worlds: real and written, modern and ancient,... more>> etc. Instead, it's a novel that thoroughly reveals the personality of its author. If you know this person personally and want to know more about her, read this novel. The author is quite a character! If you want to be entertained, educated or inspired, if you want to read to feel understood, then don't read it. Read something else. <<less

When I first read this novel, I was hooked instantly. Everyday, I would wait for the translator to update and I would never miss an update.

I love it at the same I don't.

The plotline of the novel is very used already (female transmigrating into another world) but I liked the twist of the ML being a Reincarnator. Although the romance starts of slow, I was okay with it. I liked the food p*rn and the comedy. And did I mention the food?

The beginning of the novel was pretty good its... more>> just that I don't what the fudge happened near the ending of the novel. It's like the author was building and hyping something up, keeping the readers on their toes, eyes ready to check and see what will happen and then poof! Nothing really happened.

It felt rushed. RUSHED! That when I read the few last chapters I was so lost for words and when I finished it, I was thinking to myself, "That's it? THATS IT?!" ノಠ益ಠノ彡┻━┻

Its like the author was like; "Im so motivated, lets keep up the good work!" to "I'm tired. I don't wanna do this anymore."

To be honest, I felt dissapointed. This novel made my emotions fly so high only to let it free fall without a parachute. So much for letting my hopes up. This is one of the few novels I really liked and its also one of the novels that I wont ever reread again.

Kudos to the translator though. You did a good job! <<less

First of all, before reading reviews, it’s better to look at those who completed the book first. I’m tired of all these people who didn’t even manage to get past thirty chapters before proclaiming it’s unworthy to read.

I won’t make this review too much to read. Along with the other reviewers, I do like the food p*rn in the story. It’s described to great detail, and I love how FL isn’t arrogant at all and willing to give other people second chances. A lot of transmigration stories now feature a... more>> cold, scheming ruthless type of FL, so I’m glad to see that there’s one who knows how to give people second chances. Also, the characters beside her have been developed pretty well.

For the romance, the FL gives as good as she gets. He ignores her? Fine, it’s a cold war between both of them. He pampers her? Alright, she’ll pamper him too. In one literal example, when

he doesn’t give her a reply to her letter since the ML was away at the northern border, FL gives him blank pages in return.

It was a very enjoyable story, in my opinion. Very well-written. The only complaint I have is that it ended a bit too hastily, seemingly a bit rushed, and a novel I have been reading just ended like that. I would have liked for the climax in the plot and all the revelations to have not been too cramped in the later chapters. The romance could have also been a little bit better between the two, but it’s alright for me.

Mmm, I think that’s all. <<less

Pardon my words but she should realise that when dealing with a man blinded by romance like Bojian, it is better to be straightforward and be more outspoken. Ever since her poor attempt of confronting Bojian back in her home estate, I have just been skimming the scenes whenever theres a confrontation between them.

[collapse]

and theres also that thing with whos-our-male-lead-again?

Spoiler

I understand where he’s coming from and that he’s blinded with rage and he’s having a hard time to truly accept that Chu Lian is different from before. His reaction is realistic, I have nothing against it. BUT our dear protagonist...... haah.... Honestly, I’ve skimmed over some parts of the novel that seemed too cliche and mundane so I’m not entirely sure if she’s realized that the male lead is not the single f***ing bit similar to the novel and if she’s already processed that fact but— Again, she should realised that she cant just keep putting aside the fact that her and the male leadms relationship is not doing good. I MEAN THE CHAPTERS WITH THE MALE LEAD JUST SEEM LIKE EXTRAS TO ME. And it just doesnt seem like she has any plans to mend their relationship at all. Like yes I understand, being strangled right on your wedding night isnt nice and isnt too easy to forgive but— if she truly processed that the life she has now is truly her reality, she should realise that nothing good if she just leave he male lead alone in drowning in his speculations. SHE SHOULD REALLY BE TRYING TO MEND HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. God I’m so frustrated... I mean she’s barely even thinking about the male lead now.. like she’s already forgotten him and like she’s only been adopted by the male lead’s family.

[collapse]

Wheres the romance, right now I only see cliche face slapping and cooking stuff and some cringey, frustrating scenes.

Right now I’m only continually reading to see just when the fck will our main lead go back home and when the fck will our protagonist finally slap the reality of things to Bojian cos she just keeps the the fcking things on. <<less
