When Jiang Yanyi, heiress to a traditional hotpot family, opened her eyes, she found herself transmigrated into an ancient romance novel as the villainous supporting character.

After framing the female lead, she was exiled to a border military camp, where she was treated as mere entertainment for the soldiers.

Touching the scar on her forehead left by the original character’s attempt to escape, Jiang Yanyi quietly picked up a cooking ladle. As a minor character, she figured she had no need to follow the main plot.

The soldiers in the Western Zhou military camp all said that the new cook’s skills were unparalleled.

The noodles she made could be eaten dry or, with a bit of hot water, became a delicious bowl of soup—essential for soldiers on the move!

Jiang Yanyi: “No, this is just instant noodles.”

The tea she brewed had bubbles rising from it, a slightly sweet aftertaste, and even a hint of strong alcohol.

Jiang Yanyi: “No, this is cola!”

The hotpot she prepared had a red broth with ingredients from the land, sea, and sky that could be thrown in to cook—its taste was divine!

Jiang Yanyi: “… This is really just a common hotpot from the modern world.”

The fiancé who once broke off their engagement wanted to rekindle their relationship, but the famously ruthless King of Liaonan, Feng Shuo, threw his spear and declared, “Back off, this is my wife!”

I'm gonna be honest. I did not read majority of this book properly. I skimmed through every chapter just to see if the male protagonist, second male lead, and heroine were mentioned. I did not really like this story. I didn't like how we we were in the middle of important matters dealing with the court and military and then boom, a scene dedicated to food. It just really throws the vibe off. I started the story because of the chef aspect and then there was serious matters involved. Also... more>> maybe I missed it, but I don't think that the second male lead really wanted the MC back. Again I could have just accidentally skipped over that part because of me only skimming through all the chapters. <<less

I didn't understand what reviewer DemiUchiha meant until I read it and now I agree completely with their review. This novel tries hard to go for light-hearted but also deals with serious themes/topics so it doesn't mesh well. Dropped at C35ish. I tried skipping here and there too but I just didn't enjoy reading it.

Basic storyline:

FL transmigrated to a novel as the cannon fodder villain BUT she transmigrated after most of the novel events have happened. It is when the original owner has died after being sent to the border... more>> to become a bedsl*ve for the soldiers. The original owner committed s*icide and FL takes over. The ML is the General and he has forbid the soldiers to do this illegal thing and plans to release these women who were wrongfully sent to the border.

Before he does that though, in order to survive, FL shows her cooking skills and she ends up wowing the General. The General has some disorder where he is gradually losing his senses and has lost his sense of taste. So when he finds that he can taste the food that FL cooks, he is intrigued!!!

FL ends up opening a stall and staying right beside the General's home at the border lmao.

He wants to keep her close as he suspects her identity. FL actually pretended to be a commoner instead of her real identity as she wants to be free. However, her uncle is now going to rebel because he thinks she died at the border. The General also suspect some foul play and he thinks the Emperor is bonkers as he sent a few people to the border unjustly.

So yeah, instead of a lighthearted foodie novel, you get one that mixes foodie moments with serious political issues.

Other drama that happens is FL almost gets r*ped due to evil people plotting against her, her ex-fiance being reborn and thinking to save her this time, ML having a tragic past, throne ascension drama...

It would've been okay if the novel wanted to focus on the drama.. but it insists on making it foodie related too! FL cooks alot and her adventures in food are described alot. Unfortunately it isn't fun to read about how she's creating new dishes because suddenly the next chapter is about spies and rebels and how the Empress Dowager is plotting against others.

If you want a cute casual food related novel, this isn't it. <<less

4.5 but rounded down. The ending feels a little rushed, there are unnecessary scenes and some characters just fall off the face of the earth. Not included in the rating but here as a warning is that the translation begins to go down hill as the story goes on (wrong names are the least of it).

The MC of the story is Jiang Yanyi, a woman who transmigrates into the body of a woman who had been sent to a military camp to be a prostitute as punishment for tormenting the... more>> female lead of the original story. The MC is a gifted cook and quite loyal to the companions made along the way. Eventually, she falls for the ML and eventually dominates the world as a businesswoman and then as Empress.

The ML is Feng Shuo, the uncle of the current Emperor, who has been reassigned to a new district/county by his nephew. He is very stern and sets about undoing the corruption of the previous person in his role. This includes getting rid of the prostit**es at the army camp. Through this interaction, he encounters the MC and discovers a cure for his lacking sense of taste. First, he believes her to be a spy but gradually falls in love with her.

Spoiler

The lack of ability to taste is due to being poisoned as a child. The cure, however, is never really explained. It's just that whenever the MC is around, he can suddenly taste things. This also plays out in amusing ways as it's used at least once for him to realize that she is nearby. Mostly, it's just him occasionally discovering new tastes or being annoyed that his food has no taste because he's not near her.

[collapse]

We join the story partway through the "original". All of the evil deeds of the original host were done, resulting in her and her brother's punishment. Her time in the military camp is relatively short but it does start with her building up her cooking empire as she makes a few connections there. The story feels like it doesn't move all that fast, but it actually does. Everything gets solved relatively quickly. What does take longer than a few days will end up having time skips.

Some of this is clearly meant to be very light-hearted, but there are some incredibly dark themes hidden throughout.

Spoiler

Such as the ML's backstory.

Turns out, his mother looked like the deceased former Empress so the former Emperor took her into the harem. He then forced her to play out being the former Empress. After the ML was born, she was then forced to ridicule her real self a sl*t and her son as a bastard child for stealing the affections of the Emperor. No surprise, she goes insane.

Following that, the ML was then poisoned. After that, the former Emperor sent him to the army as a child/teen. After the former Emperor died and the new one took over, the new one treated him as an enemy and exiled him to a county. All while holding his insane mother hostage.

Also turns out, his mother would have recovered but her maid was a spy from the previous dynasty who kept giving her poison to make it worse.

[collapse]

The interesting thing about this story is that the MC doesn't ever meet the original MC and ML. She does see the original MC in passing, but that's it. Never even meets the ML. She does interact with the original second ML (who is not a second ML in this story) and points out a few events she remembers from the book, but otherwise, the intersection between all of that is pretty negligible.

In true transmigrated into a villain form, the originals are bad people. Especially once we're told about their story in the original as that turns out to be more of a tragedy than a romance story. It was just kind of nice to read that neither of them were interested in the MC or ML of this story. It did have a nice slap of reality for the original story's 2nd ML.

Spoiler

He regressed from his previous life and immediately set about trying to undo some of his mistakes. He's immediately repulsed by the MC but gradually thinks about why he was and eventually realizes that she was a teenager and made mistakes and so on. Another dose of reality hits when he tries to live a happy life with the original MC but she's still flip-flopping about whether she loves the psycho Emperor or not. She basically leaves him which ends up screwing him over with the ML.

After that, he's kind of a non-entity for a bit before travelling to another country to get help. There, he encounters the same princess who wanted to marry him in the previous life but he had refused because he loved the original MC. This time around, he decides that he will marry her if she asks and dedicate his life to treating her well. Only for her to be more infatuated with the person he took to translate.

That slap in the face is where he wakes up from his dream of doing various meritorious things and that he would probably have zero interactions with any of the important characters again.

[collapse]

The ending for the novel is where it falters hardcore. Most villains have fitting ends but we don't really see a lot about the endings of the other characters. Some just fade away into obscurity (like the MC's master, and Lady Xie) and then we get a timeskip of sixty years. There was a nice final few paragraphs but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

While I liked it, probably not going to ever reread it. <<less

In response to some other reviews: Just because a novel is cooking based doesn't mean it has to be all fluffy and lighthearted. There IS a lot of description of cooking inter-spliced between bits of drama but it's not like it's randomly smack dab in the middle. The long cooking descriptions only come in moments when MC has free time and that's generally during when the drama eases. So yea, if you want ALL fluffy, this is not it but it doesn't detract from the story.

Personally, I think it's a... more>> good blend of foodie elements, political intrigue, drama, and romance. MC and MLs relationship is sweet and develops at a nice pace. MC is competent and smart and cooking isn't the only thing she can do.

I also enjoyed the different types of women portrayed in the novel that showcase how they've decided to live their life in a time where it's hard to be a woman doesn't quite follow societal norms. <<less

I enjoyed this quick read. Usually, I get annoyed when novels are extended for hundreds of chapters unnecessarily, but this one actually made me feel like it could have more chapters, since many of the plots were rushed or lacked information. If you're a fan of detailed cooking, this is a good read. Both FL and ML is not perfect. ML is also not overpowered so there are times where I did feel angst. I like that even the side characters have a story. Overall, it's not the perfect novel,... more>> but still entertaining. <<less

This story is really good. It's not a super lighthearted story, but it is written in such a way that it has actual depth to it. The characters are all decently written with plenty of nuance in their motives and actions, the pacing is slow but steady without losing consistency, and the overall plotline and way it's written makes you feel that the world is more than just the characters without losing focus on the direction the story is going.

If you're looking for another lighthearted junk-food face-slapping comeback story, this... more>> isn't it. This is a slower paced story that is more than just a book of clichés and melodramatic plot-twists. <<less
