(A more accurate rating will probably be a 3.5)
I personally enjoyed the first 100+ chapters of the novel, the main characters had brains and the FL's interactions with her family are adorable and amusing. In fact, this is one of the smartest families I've seen in these type of novels as they actually actively protect the FL and that was what made me go on reading. Although I did find the age gap between FL and ML rather weird (because her own father is just 7 years... more>> older than the ML), I was able to ignore that. Why I eventually gave up the story was due to the ML's methods.

Spoiler

The ML practically forced FL to be his. Ok in his defence the FL didn't put up too much of a struggle and pretty much just gave in, and he didn't use violent methods either. But I didn't like how he used his title as an emperor to get his way with her. Yes it's expected they would have ended together either way, but I was hoping that he had actually won her and her family over rather than simply using his status as the emperor to force her to marry him. And it's quite disappointing because this ML's character was quite likeable, until I came to this part. But then again his forcefulness does make sense as he's the emperor after all.

[collapse]

It was a decent read, but that just wasn't for me which is why I'm not going to continue. I'd like to highlight my rating is for up to c220 where I stopped, the novel is up to almost 2000 chapters and there could be better developments to the story. The characteristics of the main characters are very important for me and I just didn't approve of the ML's methods, so I didn't see a point in investing so much time to read the remaining hundreds of chapters. <<less

i don't like it how ML already has a harem full of women. MC is only 15 and ML is 30, though age doesn't matter here but isn't it weird how their entanglement will become justified in the name of true love later?!Even if he later disbands his harem, what about those women? Till now I only read about concubine De, she has been with ML for years, hoping for him to look back and yet she couldn't compare to an interesting15 years old who only performed a CPR.... To me it would've been nice if MC had a ML with clean slate because till now I only see hypocrisy..

Honestly the story and plot is great. The real problem is that every characters IQ is slightly lowered so that the MC can shine.

If you haven't read a lot of books in this genre, then this work is very good. But to those who have, the petty altercations and clashes aren't satisfying for a few reasons.

First, the minds of the other characters are shallow and easily swayed to favour the MC. To satisfy these people, the MC just has to lift a finger or prepare a snack or read a... more>> book and they are immediately swayed to liking her... really bland.

Second, most side characters the MC wants on her side (e.g. family members) are grinded into being good people. This means they are not multi-faceted. Since they are on the MC's side, then they have to be "perfect" people with no flaws in their ideology despite living in ancient times. This severely reduced the amount of conflicts/obstacles the MC has to face. <<less

Please tell me why this has such a bad rating? The only possible reason I can see so far (unless something questionable happens in future chapters?) is that there's going to be a 15 year age gap between the two leads - the emperor (ML) is 30 and Lu Liangwei (FL) is 15... :/

Spoiler

<<<In historical novels>>> If you don't take issue with 15 year old FLs getting together with 20 year old MLs (which happens fairly often) then I don't think you can take issue with a 30 year old ML. It's difficult to talk about this subject without sounding like you support child marriage, but the context of the novel (ie it's historical) does matter. I'm not the biggest fan of such a huge age gap >_> but whatever.

[collapse]

Anyway, this is a fairly standard but still readable transmigration novel. I'm usually fairly hard on these kind of novels, so when I say "still readable" I mean "better than the majority of novels with a similar tone". And tone is important. This is no Eight Treasures Trousseau, the author isn't going for that kind of detailed, realistic world and subtle interactions, this is more like... idk. Mesmerising Ghost Doctor minus cultivation? Anyway, the tone is lighter and less serious.

There's the standard white lotus sister and ex-fiancé scumbag, but the father does take action to protect his daughter (... finally?). I low-key like the interactions between the emperor and the FL. He is only attracted to her because of her beauty (and the "aura" she has) but their interactions alternate between joking and "I'm the emperor, don't forget it."

Finally, the description does the FL a bit dirty - she never actively goes out of her way to make anyone fall in love with her. Her goal at the moment is just to live comfortably. <<less

Read this if you want to read about palace story with:

    • A transmigrator MC as an empress who had medical ability
    • A devoted emperor ML who only had MC in his harem with a huge age difference (15 years) to MC
    • A scumbag ex of MC who dumped her for white lotus but then regretted it when he realized that MC was awesome
    • A white lotus villain who wanted to rob everything from MC
    • An obsessive love rival who was desperate of ML's love and was jealous of MC and did everything to get rid of MC
At first, I really like the story since MC was a likeable character but like other reader, it changed when the emperor tried to force MC to marry him. However, I still force myself to finish reading this since this is one of my favorite genre. It wasn't that bad after their marriage but too many fillers depicting MC and ML's intimate moments together made me bored over times. The story was also dragged for long with neverending dramas that made me almost gave up the story in chapter 1400++. Then I started skimming through the story until the finale. In conclusion, don't expect anything exceptional in this story.

Ah, it's a bit boring?

If you've read a few novels of this type then this isn't anything special. I might even say that this one is slightly worse? There's little tension and everything gets resolved with any hiccups. Even when something dangerous happens, it doesn't actually feel dangerous.

There aren't any moving scenes either. It doesn't make you laugh, angry or sad. It's all a bit bland.

... more>> Same for the characters, they all fall a bit flat, some lacking depth more obviously than others.

I also personally felt a bit uncomfortable with the ages. An age difference is fine but a 15 years old with a 30 years old is another matter entirely, especially knowing that our MC has no interest in romance. With the ML pushing her subtly and unsubtly regardless, it feels a bit too close too grooming.

I wouldn't recommend. <<less

The heroine is cheeky but not mind-numbingly reckless.

Blocking the faint fiance Crown Prince and White lotus "heroine" sister by preventing his rise to power is best of all worlds for her.

Her doting male family and strict but reasonable matriarch has many sweet moments.

... more>> She wastes no time in getting the conniving ho concubine (the half sister is mere days apart from her) neutralized and focuses more on prevention of tragedy than vengeance. She doesn't play around with "make them suffer longer" plots but simply protects herself and family while blocking.

The Emperor is interesting and is a adept statesman. His brother is not yet regular character but it is a suspicious thing that the poisoned Emperor is stuck using his unlikeable son as heir.

Also the ML is not a r*pey weird sociopath/bath peeper/night visitor as so common but simply the ruthlessness-as-needed required of a monarch.

The age gap is not unusual for most time periods. Even modern day can have a decades large gap between a powerful person and their spouse. Her being 15, she would be married off anyway so does it matter WHO sleeps her? (Then again this was the exact gap between my parents so maybe that dulls the edge for me)

********** because for the length there were some stagnant areas and not every reader will enjoy so many sub arcs dedicate on spinoff characters. All and all it is a All you can eat Dog Food buffet start to finish <<less

The story began nicely enough. The MC is really likeable. She isn't filled with unnecessary amounts of pettiness or feelings for revenge. Even against people who have done her wrong, like her father's concubine (stepmother?), she just does enough to make it inconvenient.

Spoiler

Her stepmother, for example, was sent to the temple. The MC just told her dad what she had done, which was the truth, and her father took care of it. There was already distrust between the Duke and his concubine so really, he used what happened at the palace as an excuse to send her away. Also, there was another girl, surname Lin, that spoke bad to the MC yet later on in the story, MC helped her escape being killed.

[collapse]

Basically, MC doesn't go overboard. She is very quick witted and I love how she interacts with her family.

What turned me off and made me actually stop reading, and for the rating of this story, is the ML. I don't care what what they say about this being set in ancient times and its "normal" for the time period. It's a fifteen year old girl and a thirty year old man. That is a 15 year gap and its hard to get over that mentally. Also, she is not consenting to any of this, especially in the beginning. The MC was pretty normal in her interaction with the ML. She would try to keep her distance and always considered the ML's actions at face value. You know, not read too much into it. On the other hand, ML was more than willing to think that her actions and words or how she spoke was seductive or suggestive when they never were.

When he finally received treatment for his condition, I had to stop because it gone beyond what I could tolerate. Now he was giving free reign to his libido and was openly sexually aggressive toward an underage girl. Again, without her consent.

Perhaps if she had been a little older, or he a little younger, I wouldn't have much of an issue. I have seen stories where the age gap is not so glaring and they made it work but this one just made me feel bad. <<less

You will like this if you are new to CN novels. It's fun. It's a little like the book, To Be a Virtuous Wife, which has been recommended for beginners-- but with more action. The translator removed most of the foreign terms, so you won't be overwhelmed. You don't have to know the difference between a di and shou daughter, for instance. Also, there's so much subtext that goes on in the dialogue that you can miss many of the verbal darts the speaker is throwing. In this book, the... more>> speakers are more straightforward. I think you will like it more if you are new to the genre.

You will also like it if you are a fan of romance. The emperor is a lovesick simp.

Experienced readers will recognize the tropes right away.
Spoiler

The Mary Sue character that used to be a a doctor and a specialist in poisons. (Why are they always doctors?! At least she wasn't an assassin too. This one is an underachiever!) The poison that renders the handsome ML, um, unable to perform. The cannon fodder half-sister, etc.

[collapse]
This may not be the book for you, as you might find parts of it to be a bit predictable and reductive.

There's some action. The main couple has good chemistry and the repartee between them is interesting. I'm having a good time watching their relationship develop. The proposal was great.

It's mostly a fun read, and the author takes some liberties.
Spoiler

For example, the MC likes to stick her tongue out at everyone-- even when she's at the palace. It was cute at first, but started to get annoying. Also, the MC and a rival threw drinks on each other at the emperor's banquet, of all places. That's pretty crude and just wouldn't happen.

[collapse]
This isn't meant to be a serious read like To Be a Virtuous Wife. <<less

At the beginning of the translation I read they said that the FL was 19 and the ML was 30, I thought OK thats kinda plausible and her being trusted to treat his medical condition at 19 is a stretch but she could be a genius in their eye. Then in chapter 67 they say shes 15 and considered an idiot. Now you can give me that ancient times BS all you want, but I've read enough Cnovels to conclude that the authors just want to sexualise pre/teen girls. Even... more>> though fertility in ancient times was high, mortality has high also. Life expectancy ranged form 22 to 35. People needed to marry early and have children early to replace themselves, so if people are living well into their 70s (the FL grandma for example) and apparently still strong enough to practice martial arts, why get married so young?? The whole time they are saying shes always been beauty presumably when she was a pre-teen and all the men are leering at her. Honestly if you want to sexualise children just say so, why hide behind convoluted "historical context" <<less

I actually enjoy the writing style and the heroine a lot. I'm not giving it full stars because I don't know what happens after, since I can't pay for the rest of it lol.
