It's been updated after several years of Hiatus, thank you author!

This novel maybe one of best entertainment genre novel. If there are some novel that have same quality like this, maybe I would recommended "first year max level manager"

I feel like the story could go down any path and I'd enjoy it regardless; it's that well-written.

Every character, encounter, and problem is realistic. Some people are really petty, but that might be a thing in show business for all I know. I get why some reviewers feel that the MC's premonitions occur too conveniently. But if he didn't have them, then we would have complained that his decisions were s*upid, and that luck or plot armor was the reason for his success. Moreover, his premonitions are actually quite rare, and from what I can see, they're not so much answers to his problems as hints, and the MC has to decide how to interpret and react to them, and then actually try to work towards a better future. His ability is much less overpowered or cheaty than... really any other novel's cheat ability, actually. Huh.

I also really like how the MC responds to his visions: uncertainly, viscerally, yet carefully. He doesn't put his future at their mercy, but doesn't s*upidly ignore them either. He never gets the full picture, and often worries that he's making the wrong decision off of what he's seen. Despite that, the novel's feel isn't one of angst, but of hope and tension as the MC steadily progresses and grows along with those whom he manages. His trials and successes are very well-balanced, so the MC never seems to have a too easy time or gain too great a reward, while it also doesn't seem as if the author hates the MC; instead, every step presents challenge and opportunity, and requires hard work, consideration, and risk-taking to overcome. Even then, everything isn't inside of the MC's control, since he lives in such an organic, realistic world that other characters are very much a part of.

Oh god oh no you can’t do this to me. I saw the score, read the reviews, and silently laughter off the hiatus tag and warning. I thought it would at least pause at an opportune time, like a season finale or something. BUT NO. LITERALLY A CHAPTER BEFORE THE START OF ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED EVENTS IN PROBABLY ANY NOVEL EVER, they drop the hiatus tag on me. And not just any hiatus, an indefinite, currently three year hiatus that leaves as much despair in my heart as... more>> Jung was about to leave in Director Choi’s.

THIS NOVEL HAS RUINED ME. I actually have to take a break from reading on here for a while to tone my expectations down. Now every novel I tried to read after feels like poorly translated Chinese drivel. I honestly wouldn’t recommending reading this until the author comes back from hiatus, if ever. Sure, it had a bit of a rocky start, and I really didn’t like how he described the girls in the beginning, but once it got on a roll it never stopped. Sometimes it seemed like it was giving to much away or his power was being to overpowered, like with the initial director Joo visions, but it always flipped my preconceptions on their head an left me dying for more. Well, I guess I’ll try to put this on the back-burner for now and join the wait like all the beautiful people who warned me before. Although I doubt I’ll be able to forget these characters anytime soon. <<less

Don’t read this.

Seriously.

It’s a hazard to your mental health.

I have never felt so stressed reading a novel. Each chapter that I finished only widened the growing void of despair in my heart. The inevitable fate that is the hiatus.

Gonna use "I'm Really a Superstar" for an easy comparison

IRAS: it's okay really. But I could never really root for the MC, mostly cause of the whole game element inserted into the story, what with the super convenient memory recalling pills, skill books and save point bs, plus all that face smacking business gets tiring pretty quick too.

you just know nothing's ever gonna go wrong for the MC cause, again, the game element is there to save the day. Though I admit there are some funny moments

... more>> and

all hail chenchen, the real MC in disguise.

Top Management: game element is missing in this one, instead you get future sight and a whole lotta social maneuvering. Future sight is definitely an ability to die for and it does work wonders for the MC. But just wait one moment. You'd think a guy with future sight would know the future like the back of his hand, no? Hoho well not this guy.

The MC's ability to look into the future is uncontrollable and unpredictable. (As of chapter 203 anyhow)

How. Deliciously. Ironic.

While there is a certain amount of plot armor, it's at a very acceptable level. The MC is also a very likable persona, kudos to that. There's a surprising amount of suspense and excitement by the way.

I also really liked how the characters and their interactions were so alive. Figuratively.

Well. Simply put, I really enjoyed reading TM. Yup. <<less

SUMMARY
Probably one of the best modern-day slice-of-life Korean translated novels out there (the other being "Chemistry").
Perfect light-hearted novel filled with comedic elements and believable heart-warming interactions.
Highly recommended for fans of the Korean entertainment industry (kdrama/kvariety, "Running Man" etc), you'll absolutely appreciate all the subtle references in this story.

PREMISE
MC is a passionate cinephile who just joined the entertainment industry as a manager. He gains the power of precognition (glimpses of the future) that he has to interpret to aid his career (and his cast of stars).

WRITING
The writing, pacing, subtlety is top notch. The world building is very well done, you totally believe the constructed reality of the Korean entertainment industry. It acknowledges the shadiness of the industry, the legacy of s*xual favors/scandals, which is a great... more>> nod towards the recent #MeToo movement and Harvey Weinstein problems. That alone is worth 1 additional star.
There's NEVER excessive exposition, dialogue is kept to the minimum, characters don't just narrate out their feelings. It's just the right amount of subtext to empathize with while filling in the blanks with your imagination, something seriously missing in most Asian novels.

CHARACTERS
This is where the novel really shines.
MC is a genuinely likable movie fan with a passion for his work and wants to develop his own team of stars, so that presents a realistic goal which moves the story along. He struggles with the reality of his shady environment, and tries to make the best of his situation without compromising all his values.
It's great that MC's not just a damn boy-scout like other generic novels.

Most of the side-characters personalities are also incredibly well fleshed out, from their mannerisms to speech patterns. They have their own believable ambitions and motivations. There are some odd turns with villain characters, but I'm ok with turning a blind eye when the rest of the cast is fantastic.
Spoiler

A bit*h villain who suddenly turns tsundere makes zero sense. But I guess author had to introduce a love rival just to spice things up.

[collapse]

We easily focus on the various characters because the emphasis is on their struggles and not on the MC's precognition skill (which rarely appears). We're emotionally connected to their day-to-day life, whether it's the mundane training and work they endure, or star studded events and performances. It reminds me of a great (and award winning) Korean drama called "Misaeng", where the story was entirely about employees struggling through a corporate environment.

MILD ISSUES
The plot has a lot of deus-ex-machina. But if you accept that it's slice-of-life then that's fine. It does correct itself midway with the introduction of MC's other protege.
Spoiler

Nam Joyoon, a 30+ down-and-out actor who struggled his whole career because of unfortunate circumstances despite having the talent. MC doesn't rely on his precognition to help out Joyoon, but genuinely hones his own ability to scout and develop Joyoon. The bromance is REAL.

[collapse]

Overall kudos to the author (and translator) who are obviously avid fans of the entertainment industry. I'd give it 4.5 stars out of 5 but since that isn't possible, I'd rather round it upwards.

RESPONSE TO EARLIER CRITIQUES:
It was commented that MC Jung lacked a purpose/goal. MC's goal was presented at the beginning by his Chief/mentor Hyunjo, who stated that they continue to work hard despite the griminess of the industry, because the feeling of breaking through obstacles and nurturing a successful celebrity was "addictive". The MC repeated that line afterwards when one of his proteges made it. For reference it's in Chapter 10 and repeated at Chapter 62 and Chapter 99. Basically it's like watching your kid grow up. It's a simple goal, yet you realize it comes with many side goals that have to be achieved.

EDIT -- COMPARISONS TO "GOD OF MUSIC"
A lot of comparisons have been made to God of Music, a novel also written in 2015 around the same time as Top Management. I posted a review on the other site. Basically TM avoids a lot of the pitfalls that GoM made. <<less

Decent. Instead of time-travel, the MC has precognition: the ability to see into the future. It manifests like a daydream without his control. Using this information, he begins to influence events of his present self while constantly questioning his ability as well as doubting the people around him.

Reading the chapters made me realize why many such stories prefer straightforward time-travel or being gifted with an item instead of this MC's limited viewing of the future. The precognition ability in this story seems very awkward and unwieldy and I can't help... more>> but wonder if the author would have an easier time if the MC had just returned from the future or received a future diary of sorts; instead of experiencing a random dream out of nowhere whenever it is convenient. So far, it seems to trigger whenever he meets someone new (except the first one which paved the underlying premise).

What kept me interested is the dilemma the MC faces: he is aware of possible multiple timelines due to his actions and cautious about his co-worker. It's unlike the story The Princess Wei Yang whose MC returned to the past and had no qualms in immediately taking pre-emptive revenge even though technically some of them haven't wronged her yet in her new life.

Whereas the MC of this one realizes that the changes he had caused might affect people differently than those in his future memory. He is doubtful but still alert against the potential enemies of the future. The writing is easy reading, nothing strenuous. As with other stories that deal with popular culture in Korea and Japan, I keep wondering if the characters within are parodies of real-world persons. I suspect a native Korean reader might enjoy such trivia, though it shouldn't detract fans of the genre from giving this a try. <<less

The best part that I loved was MC exposing that snake bastard.

I've seen this novel since it started serializing on Korean web pages. It enjoyed sensational popularity at the time of the series, but there were many malicious readers. The writer continued to be hurt by the malicious feedback from the readers. After announcing that he was being treated for mental distress, he failed to continue his serialization and quit. I'm still waiting for the novel.

Brilliant. I don't have any interest in idols, K-pop, acting, or the entertainment industry, but you don't need to like that sort of thing to enjoy this gem of a story. The author manages the pace flawlessly, keeps exactly the right amount of tension to leave you breathless and eager for another chapter, and uses the MC's visions of the future with subtlety.

There are plenty of stories where the protagonist never faces any tension and the plot becomes a joke, where there's no narrative tension and no real sense of... more>> drama. This is not one of them. <<less

I'm liking this, alot. I would say I love it but I need to read more chapters before that.

The glimpse into the future are fuzzy sometimes and does provide opportune moments for the MC. But MC is still a normal person that has to struggle, think and make decisions. He's not OP and not one of those that is confident everything will go his way since he knows everything, so it actually make you curious how the information will be used and how everything connects together. I'm also happy that... more>> the novel actually focuses on the plot with no excessively flowery description of the idol members or attempt at harem/relationship lines. I'm tired of novels where all female characters have jade like skin, starry obsidian eyes and are secretly in love with a clueless (or pe*verted) MC. He's just an office worker who's sincere about his work and doesn't sneer then ruin/embarrass every person he dislikes. It's not AMAZING but somehow you end up not only caring about the MC but also the people he cares about as well. <<less

Truly a bit disappointing. The story is not as it is hyped up to be.

The writing style is a bit hectic. The pov changes abruptly sometimes and the writer can't stick to 3rd person or 1st person sometimes. The chapters are also filled with the MC's thoughts, they are everywhere! In between dialogues, in between actions, even in his visions, it's very disruptive to the story flow.

The setting is unique, no cliche rebirth or reincarnation, just brief glimpses of the future, love it.

The characters are interesting though, the MC is... more>> likeable (I just wish his thoughts didn't make me feel like I was trapped in his head the first few dozens of chapters). The side characters band antagonists are interesting. The management part if the story is also satisfying,
Spoiler

though I wish the girl group he manages didn't turn from loveable to sticky, possessive chewing gum, especially the character being pushed as a potential love interest. I liked her cool nature at first but then she turned unrealistic. It's natural for a manager to occasionally be assigned to others too later. And worse, the MC seems particularly dimwitted about their over dependence. The company colleagues seem to know and encourage it, did they forget that relations between celebrity and manager is a delicate thing especially with male and female?

Overall, I had trouble with writing style, their "negative" character development and the book not living up to its hype. <<less

Wow. It truly deserves its rating. Honestly, when I read the description I wasn't expecting much. It wasn't until I saw the good rating and awesome reviews that I decided to give this LN a try. A great decision. Is it the best LN I've read? not really, but damn, I think I really like it. I don't have much experience with Korean novels but I feel that perfectly embodies my idea of a Korean LN, this would be a perfect webtoon.

Now, with the story, it truly has a good... more>> plot I guess, it doesn't stop being interesting I guess, which also annoys me since we won't be having many chapters any time soon. I'm glad the novel hasn't gone in a bad direction though, I truly didn't want it to become a typical manager x celebrity LN, at least not at the start of their career as it's too risky and basically, not realistic.

A kind of regret is how I can't really picture Sunwoo, I have an imaginary cast on my head but I still can't picture him at all. Besides that, I don't really like how they've skipped some things as if they were irrelevant.

I don't know if it's just how the writer tells the story or if they truly forgot about stuff like this, also I have a little complaint
Spoiler

Not having a comeback in 2 years?? even BLACKPINK hasn't been starved this bad, damn... irl if that had happened people would've already speculated they had disbanded, just look at PRISTIN. If you are a kind of famous idol group you NEED to have a comeback, yes, variety shows, acting, modeling gigs, that helps, but they are idols. Even those super popular groups with actors have comebacks, why couldn't Neptune have one? Even one as a filler, you see, if you have a year without comebacks then what are you supposed to do at the end of the year? You can't be nominated for most things... Idols need comebacks.

[collapse]

Besides those complaints, I think this novel is awesome, I find it interesting and funny and I love associating certain events/shows/companies with irl things, haha I can even picture some of the characters as some real celebrities out there. Oh and a very small complaint... lmfao, the names of the idol groups and some shows are truly... bad.

Ugh but enough of my complaints, you can see how I gave this 5 stars, those complaints aren't enough to make this a bad novel, I think this is really a must-read LN. It doesn't have a s*upid plot, even now I still don't know the direction the LN is going to take, this isn't your typical "weak MC gets bullied, MC gets stronger and gets revenge", this feels... kind of human. I don't think this is a spoiler since we still don't even know why he got those powers, but it feels as if his future self was trying to get him to fix his regrets. I mean, isn't that the point? We saw that our MC was a CEO in the future, if he kept going like that he could just achieve that, but even then... he wasn't satisfied, was it because of his regrets? Could it be fixed if his present self avoided it? Just what is he supposed to do with his habilities? Even now, I don't know... <<less

This novel completely suits my taste. I’ve been finding one for ages and stumbled upon this by someone’s recommendation! The characters and the story are so good that I want more but sadly it’s been 4 years since the last update. I still very much recommend this novel even though it’s on hiatus because it’s just that good.

The last chapter the author uploaded was 219 or 220. I’ve done some researching and found out that the author was facing some issues but still said he was going to come back.... more>> The author said that himself as he posted it on Munpia as a notice on December 2017. Then I found someone that might know some info and found out that on 2019, a special lecture on novels hosted on Munpia, the Munpia representative said that ‘he’s writing for a comeback’ but then many fans have given up since it has been 1-2 years since that comment. There’s only news of him returning but I don’t think I can confirm since I’m not proficient in the Korean language to search around their websites. The author also has no SNS from what I’ve heard. If you guys heard anything new from the author, please let me know too!

I don’t know how long it’ll take for him to come back or if he is willing to continue but I hope he does as the stories still has a ton of potential left. I’ll also continue to check up on the author and hope he does come back and also hope that the translator picks it up again! <<less

The novel is really well written. The beginning of the story is enjoyable as the characters are introduced.

But the deeper we go into characters exploration, the darker it gets.
That's what stops me from enjoying this story further, the story gets darker and darker as we find out the circumstances and traumas of people working in the entertainment industry.

Characters we thought were "good" are later revealed to be "grey" (thinking of the CEO), when to me his actions are anything but white or grey and straight dark.
Maybe that's how... more>> the entertainment business works, but I don't read novels to be reminded of how perverse our society is, and I think the author focus only on that. He takes a lot of time to introduce characters that had their personality twisted by their experience in the entertainment world.

There is just too much focus on the dark side of the industry, the characters who are under the most spotlight are those who have twisted personality.
In conclusion, if you're looking for an entertaining read without a heavy theme, this novel is definitely not it. <<less

im in love with this novel.

the character interactions, the drama and more importantly the satisfying resolutions, the MC is not generic, but normal. He has a personality, but he isn't ridiculous either.

Like, its weird, if you looked at the individual parts of the novel its really bland. But what makes this so good is how the author glues everything together. It gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling reading this, but it doesnt feel cheap or fake. The neptune girls are cute, and when they are happy or excited there... more>> is a good reason for them to be.

It isnt a novel about the MC failing to prevent fate, but instead an adventure in how the MC fixes the future, or how the MC finds out the future is different than the vision led him to believe.

Its kind of ingenious the way its set up. The MC gets a vision, he doesnt know how the vision is connected to the current issue nor can he control it, but the visions are where most of the "bad things" happen. And because the bad things only happen in his mind, the readers still get to feel fear and such without the bad things happening. Also, because we know the MC eventually succeeds without the future vision when he is old, there is always the doubt in the back of your mind that the MC won't be able to fix the current problem.

I usually only read action adventure novels and I certainly dont read dramas about idols and music and acting industry. However a truly good story can be enjoyed by anyone, like I said before its the glue that makes a good novel, and the glue in this story is amazing. <<less

This is not like ‘Im really a superstar’ were everything gets boring after a hundred chapter because of its repetative format. The fleshing out of the MC’s character as the chapter progress is just one of the things that can be... more>> enjoyed, as he can see the his future succesful self is not acctually a character to be desired and how he would struggle with himself to change to not be cottupted by by this dirty industry. Never thought managing other people could create such a top tier story, but it happened.

characters:

I have found that I care a lot about the characters and their eventual ends in this story, which is good. There has been a ton of character development and unique characters so I actually know who someone is when I read their name instead of skipping past their name because they're unimportant and bland. The side characters have major roles and they affect the plot in a big way.

... more>> plot:

There have not been any unexpected plot twists but the enemies are realistic, they're serious, and the protagonist has to utilize his available resources in a clever manner to defeat them. The protagonist himself is weighed down by inner demons and some character flaws, including his sometimes over reliance on his partial future sight. Many have criticized the vagueness of the MC's trigger for his ability, but I see it as one of the central problems plaguing the MC. The MC has to figure out how to deal with his unpredictable powers, if there are any patterns associated with his visions, and then he has to interpret the few visions he does have. The reader is drawn as well to try to figure out the mystery behind his visions and how to interpret his various visions, which ties the reader further into the story.

romance:

The romance is subtle but constant and heartwarming. The girl (s?) that become infatuated with him all have reasons for liking him that can be clearly understood by the reader and affection is shown in an assortment of small loving actions. We are brought to the understanding that a character likes the MC not because she confesses, but because she starts trying overly hard not to show her love. The MC isn't dense, but the ways that affection is expressed in the story are small enough that the MC seems to have trouble always catching on. So a really nice romance and a really nice story with clear objectives and solid tension. <<less

Terrific.

I always avoid this kind of 'entertainment' novels since I didn't really interested but I decided to give this one a try since the rating is the highest I've seen on this site yet, and I didn't dissapointed in the slightest. This is sooo enchanting, really gives you a ride of rollercoaster even though the premise is simple. The plotting, connecting schemes, developing the characters, I haven't found a single fatal flaw here. If anything it's the fact that this has been on hiatus for over a year now that... more>> I'm worried how the story will end.

A little about the story, the MC can see glimpses of his future, just like the description synopsis. This can be OP, yes, but as we all know the cliche about future foreboding, the main problem is how we will react knowing what our future will be like.

It's like we already settle in our car, behind the wheel, ready to drive out of the garage to the work, when we suddenly saw a glimpse of our future where we will be scolded for being late. Back to the garage, we will contemplate why we're late, since we're ready to depart with the car. Is there a problem with the car? Is there a traffic jam? Should we use a public transport instead of driving the car? Call a taxi? Which one would end up with us late to the job and which one will bring us to the job on time?

Those kind of worry.

And the author manage to grasp this concept creatively. The arc smoothly connected, the character relationship didn't seem bland, the process to conclusion leave some twists. This novel is really an oasis in the middle of novelupdates desert. <<less
