One day, my little granddaughter asked me, “Grandma, why did you marry grandpa?”

I answered without thinking, “In order to make He Yu regret.”

My granddaughter didn’t understand, “What do you mean?”

To understand it, we had to go back to the time I was five years old. We were playing house with the theme of an ancient wedding. He Yu lifted my veil. I winked at him, but he screamed: “Mom, it’s a ghost!”

I vowed to hold my grudges and one day he will regret that he provoked me.

I planned to fascinate He Yu with my beauty. And when he gets crazy about me, I will not marry him. I will marry someone else. He Yu will cry bitterly and fall into madness, as he missed the chance to be with me for a lifetime.

Ooof the little jiang mingzhen is so unsufferable that I just can't continue the novel. I would never have thought that a 5 year old character could give me this much angst.

I tried to control myself so much thinking she was just a child, a five year old child but I can't help it, I hate her so so much. I feel really bad about hating her and try to see the positive but there IS no positive at least up until the chapter I have read.

Mainly I just feel... more>> so so bad for He You, it isn't just bullying. To the point that Mingzhen does it, it's abuse like emotional and physical abuse.

She can kick him, take his things, take his food, not allow him to sleep, treat him like a s*ave, make fun of him, literally slap him but it's all fine because she's a kid and it's cute right, but he's a f*cking kid too !!! And the worst thing of all is noone is on his side, noone helps him, noone defends him. Even his own mother takes her side and pacifies HER instead of comforting him.

And the most blood boiling thing was that the girl's parent's knew about the daughter's bad character that she was spoilt and a brat and that all the kids hated her because she would bully all of them but they never tried to teach her or advise her or even tell her right from wrong.

They literally used He Yu to make Mingzhen do things because they spoiled her so damn much that they, her parents, couldn't control their own daughter.

Spoiler

In He You's narrative, "the adults would come to the room to look for him and drag him out to Jiang Mingzhen to set an example. Sometimes he would get an expensive little cake, sometimes he would be dragged to the room and half the girls toys would be stuffed in his arms. He wondered whether he should take the things, whether he should co-operate. After a long period of observation he came to the conclusion that he can't eat, can't take and he has to co-operate. Because everything was reserved for Mingzhen. All the things that belonged to her would return to her arms. He couldn't cry even when things were stolen, couldn't refuse because he was a good kid.

[collapse]

The girls parents are villains, at least to me. They think that all they're doing is spoiling their little princess and kids should be spoiled. But in actuality they are creating a bully, a menace to society, and a villain. They didn't even care that their daughter was bullying the poor kid. She would do it in front of everyone and He You would be so uncomfortable and would keep his head down but all they cared about was that their princess is eating a lot and is happy. F*ck them.

This is a romance, slice of life story so I don't know how they'll handle this. But in real life, He You would become a withdrawn kid, with an inferiority complex who would harbor deep resentment for his mother for putting him through all that. And possibly have twisted morals.

And of course Mingzhen would be a spoilt brat who thinks everything and everyone belongs to her and her parents would regret that oh they shouldn't have spoiled her so much. <<less

This novel is.. Sigh.

I was fooled by the fairly good ratings. The MC personality is, idk, unlikeable to me? ML too, he was just so-so.

Spoiler

her parents were rich at the start of the novel and the 5 y.o MC was spoiled, so I get why her personality is like that. ML is her nanny's son that the nanny brought back from her hometown because of her husband's death and ML had no one to take care of him, so she got him to live with her in mc's house. MC and ml's interaction at the beginning is just like what Imsobored described, and I was like oh it's alright she's just a kid. And then there was a time skip when ML went back to his hometown with his mother because they had to settle something (i forgot I think it was bcs his father worked at construction site and he along with other workers' death was work-related so their family demanded compensation from the company they worked at, and his mother got some money from her family's clothing company too, cmiiw) and ML with the mother had their lives turned for the better, so they didn't come back to mc's house.

MC and ML met again in high school and ML found out that mc's parents went bankrupt but they managed to get MC into a really good school, which was where ML studied, as her mother now worked at a furniture store and her father—idk where. By then I thought her personality maybe changed a lil bit better than when she was a child, but nope. She's still unlikeable. She's the definition all bark no bite, and the her catchphrase "i'll make you regret it" had become a joke to me. At least in the chapter I'm at.

well there's character growth tag so I know that she will have one later, but I really can't muster the energy to continue so I dropped it

[collapse]

The only things I love about this novel: first, I like how the story is narrated by the older MC to her granddaughter, and reading the interaction between them along with ML is heart-warming enough for me to not rate this novel at all. Second, the novel started with the granddaughter's pov, and looking back from where I'm at now, I wish the author made the story about her instead. She's lovely. <<less

This is the cutest thing ever 😭😭

The novel tells a story of how an elderly couple, who were once childhood friends, came to love each other. It's a realistic bittersweet coming-of-age story focusing on MC and ML's personal growth and mental struggle.

It's truly a beautiful story full of warmth that left me feeling regretful for not having any opposite-gender childhood friend.

This is such a complex psychological story. I have read many, but this one really the book that tells what is relationhip means. At first I hate FL, but I cant really hate her, because she really didnt understand!! Then my hate for her was gone and I started to hate ML. Until the end, I have mix feeling for ML. Yes, he is the one that makes FL happy, but he is the one that makes FL hurt because she have to face reality. I know that that act... more>> will make FL better in long run, but, it really make her hurts, and alhough in the future she will happy, no treatment can heal the scar. Sometimes, I really thought that maybe it will be good to stay the same. Idk, it really hard to make a choices if faced with that situation. <<less

This novel is a hidden GEM. There are some pretty poor reviews on this page, however, please don't be so quick to judge - I am 100% sure they have not read the entire novel, only up to the translated parts. "To Make He Yu Regret" is a bildungsroman, a coming-of-age novel where two childhood friends of very different backgrounds reunite again in their youth, only, now their statuses are switched. Like some other reviewers have already written, there is a lot of character growth the main leads undergo throughout.... more>> To be honest, the struggles the female lead, Jiang MengZhen, faces throughout her youth are some of the more realistic challenges you will read about amongst the CN novels you will find on this website. She struggles with things many modern women struggle with, her behavior may seem odd at first glance, but it will make a lot of sense once you read through the novel. The way her relationship with He Yu develops is also very realistic. I strongly encourage anyone who chances upon this page to read the novel, if you're eager for more past what has already been translated, the MTL is good enough to understand what happens.

Spoiler

I see a few comments bashing JMZ's behavior as a 5-year-old. Well, what do you expect? That's how she was raised, it's not correct parenting by any means but this type of behavior is not at all atypical of spoiled kids. Not to mention, children are very frank with their words and behavior, they are not able to mentally put themselves in someone else's shoes until around 5 years or older, it's literally a developmental thing. Imo, it's a realistic relationship dynamic. Further, when JMZ and HY reunite again in HS, it appears that JMZ's behavior doesn't change. Her family is no longer rich, her parents are good to her, and yet she still behaves like a brat. This is just a book but the author does a great job of making her characters three-dimensional and realistic. At 15/16, if you can infer unfriendliness from a stranger's rude tone, then JMZ sure as hell can pick up social cues that she is disliked by nearly everyone in her school. So why does she still act like this? Why does she behave in a way that makes her life much more difficult? The answer: it's her protection mechanism (Others can't reject me if I reject them first) and her parents' expectations. When her family fell from grace, her parents loved her very much but became obsessed with restoring their previous standard of living for their daughter. They excessively sacrificed themselves to try to give their daughter the opportunities she would have had if they were still wealthy. In return, JMZ sacrifices herself to play the role her parents want her to be: their darling little princess. HY helps her when she gets bullied in school and helps convince her parents to let her be and is the only one by her side when she emotionally breaks down. They become good friends and she is very grateful towards him. However, although she loves him, she suffers from an extreme inferiority complex. He Yu is popular, handsome, and has great grades. She does not think she is worthy of him and keeps a distance from him due to this... which causes some friction between them

Cant tell if the romance its good since this its a story that starts since they where little kids and they havent grow up yet.

But I can said that this novels gets top marks for having children acting like actual children! Not minuature adults, one dimensional little angels or evil spawn in here so far. Its so refreshing.

It's the biggest character growth novel I've ever read.

As a child, MC was a spoiled and selfish child. Her wealthy parents literally treated Jiang Mingzhen as the meaning of her name was "Precious Pearl in his parents' palm". The author did a great job, making me really dislike how MCs treated ML when they're little, who was the nanny's son in her's family.

It's a beautiful story, which made me fall in love with the MC character.

This novel is not realistic at all. I mean it is just absurd think about it if someone did the same things to me when I was a child I would never forgive my mother or the other people and probably become a person with a lot of mental problems and traumas. I can't forgive MC no matter what even. Everyone says character growth and whatnot but it is only because MLs childhood trauma doesn't really exist even though it should exist

Reread this again.

The story is refreshing take on childhood friends. It's not about your typical OP girl meets OP boy. It's about the love story of two ordinary childhood friends. The MC is not beautiful, but rather "fat and ugly"; in fact, its emphasized that she didn't inherit her mother's beauty and grace. MC struggles with this, and it's something that she still struggles to overcome. The ML is your typical, handsome, tall, smart kind of guy. What makes him stand out is that he isn't 100% OP. He knows... more>> his strength lies in Art, and he makes up for whatever he lacks (ex. His accent.) He's also aware of his appearance, and wonders if the MC (now a grandma) regrets loving him now that he, as a weak old man, is not the same He Yu as he was in his prime.

It's really a refreshing story. Often times, you read stories about the most nicest, smartest and prettiest people around. It's a good way to escape, but what about ordinary people? I'm sure the majority of people aren't like the textbook examples of what it means to be nice and perfect. This is He Yu and Jiang Mingzhen. He Yu saw Jiang Mingzhen for more than her appearance and status. It's cliché, but his love is extremely genuine and natural--it never felt forced. It gives a little hope that even the most ordinary life can be so beautiful if put in the right words. Of course, I'd say the most unrealistic part of this story is that "He Yu" exists.

A take on the childhood part of the story: I think it was crafted okay. Jiang Mingzhen's arrogance is expected of a spoiled kid like her. Her parents have been spineless towards her, so it's natural that her attitude towards He Yu was so extreme. Children's ability to see people in different perspectives is not well developed as in their case since they met so early in life. In contrast to when they met again in their teens, they have enough emotional maturity to see past the impressions they made when they were kids. When they do so, they naturally grow closer.

Indeed, when they met again, JMZ still acts like the brat she was as a child. Only now, is it really genuine? <<less

I finished reading the novel and it is beautiful, there is an enormous growth in the personality of the protagonist, at first she is hateful but later you realize why her behavior as a teenager is like that (I cried), she just needed that push that He Yu gave her so that you can break free and realize that you can do more than you think.

The characters are portrayed in a human way, they have strengths and weaknesses.

I cried at the ending. This novel was so good. It's a quick read and I am happy and sad that I finished it.

The character development was fantastic, Mengzhen really changes though out the story. And He Yu is such a treasure.

Reading about these two was amazing and the way they came together was so wholesome and heart warming.

I was very interested when I read the description, but I decided against reading it for one reason. Whenever there is a tag of from ugly to beautiful, there would be a tag of from fat to fit. I know this is a stereotypical thing in chinese novels, but it's a little too much. I close my eyes when every MC is beautiful with porcelain skin. But making her ugly because she's fat is too much. And more times than not she would be chubby not even obese or something... more>> for her to have a problem with it (since it's unhealthy). This is a thing I hate in Chinese novels, so I decided not to read it. <<less

It’s a 3.5 I honestly disliked both leads at different times. The story is quite sad though it’s an happy ending. Their romance is really difficult one and I still don’t believe the ML deserves the FL even though he was the only one who managed to shake her off and save her.

It's unfair to give it so low rating when you are only at first few chapters. It only has 58 chapters so kist finish it anyway. Sure she was nasty when she was young but she went through a very difficult life after before she became successful again. Don't dwell on the kind of her as a child.. Wait till you see her change in highschool, how the ML misunderstood her and how they progress till the end. I just felt the ending wasn't much elaborated, in one second there... more>> were together, dating then married <<less
