To Be A Virtuous Wife

Description

As a virtuous wife, does it include tolerating his cousin, enduring his concubines, bearing his mother?

If you will not let me live freely, why would I let you live in satisfaction?

Did fate let women time-travel so they could learn the three morals and four virtues?

Rather than act like a coward and live, it would be better to live in satisfaction and die.

Beautiful. I was looking for soft novels after reading such a tragic one called, Cold Sands.

This is very heartwarming and easy to read.

Spoiler

I know Rui Wang was an a**hole, but his death scene was poignant.

MC is really great. She is always an unforgettable encounter for people. Her love of luxury being one of the reasons the ML falls for her was refreshing.

As always this author writes great stories.

Translation is great quality.

It's been too long since I read it to make a detailed review, if I end up re reading it I'll put more into it. One of the notes I had on this novel was ''kinda makes ambition out to be a bad thing in women tho'' and like, lol it be the truthhh.... more>> Past me was on point. Also wanted to 4* it but don't know how to edit the 5*. <<less

Okay, this novel is so good. I give it 5 stars. In the whole story. The only one I feel pity is ruiwang's second wife, lou guiping and heng fei. I mean, I hope in their next life they can have a man to love them too. And for ruiwang second wife, I hope in her next life get a man that can really love her, not just superficial feelings.

Even ruiwang's first wife is not that bad, just that jealousy filled her heart, afterall she wasnt treated how she was... more>> suppose to. If only ruiwang is not a scum then she wouldn't end up that way. That half sister was disgusting though, I hate her from beginning to end. Some might like ruiwang but I dont like him still. His regrets came too late. Many people are already harmed by him. Pls dont forget that. Even Ning wang is still better than him. Also I feel like ning wang's wang fei is not appreciated enough. That scum ning wang. <<less

I like it very much. I've seen a lot of reviews associating this with Eight Treasure Trousseau. It does have similarities in terms of its simplicity but I'd say this is better in my preference.

It's simple, right amount of fluff, and satisfying ending. It does have schemes and all those stuff concerning the succession of the throne but it's not so serious. It's not mind boggling, it's not something you'd think deeply about—but still it's balanced with the romance.

I am satisfied with the ML and his attitude towards his woman.... more>> He's kind of different from those overly possessive MLs and those obsessive types. He's more on a normal scale in my opinion.

About the FL, I like how she handled the women. She didn't maltreat them or unreasonably make their lives difficult just so she could have the ML all for herself. She's got that strong modern woman's sense. If ML loves her then good, if he does not then she won't beg and wallow in self pity. She does love him, it's just that she have a big amount of self respect enough not to depend and invest her entirety to the ML. That's how I see her.

I also love FL's relationship with Jing guifei. Their interactions always cracks me up! I also like He Ming's ending. Such a good boy deserving of all the good things in life 😭

Overall I'm satisfied. Honestly. It's just that I kind of got hurt with Rui Wang's ending. Dudeeeee it's sad! In terms of how his fu and family ended up, I have no complains, it's just that it's SAD!

Spoiler

Dude, remember how during his 2nd wife's pregnancy he kept on going to some tongfang? Then some servants said that those girls have the same brows and eyes with the wife? DUDE NOOOO. Y'all be having the same brows as Qing Ju!!! And don't get me started about their wedding night when he told her "pretty brows".

And that painting 😭

I mean Rui Wang is definitely not the most pleasing character and not even favorable at most but I feel sad and pity his unrequited love. I'm not sure if his wife did love him romantically but I wonder how she felt when she found out who he kept on painting all along 😭

This is a sweet novel. Good romance, nice and simple plot and rounds up in a simple manner.

Like the MC was this amazing woman who stuck to her goals and didn't waver in front of the harem and I genuinely want more novels where the MC is clearly talented and can handle concubines

I must say that what the author planned to do do was executed well enough and the translation is nice as well. A good novel to relax and enjoy.

It was my first Chinese novel that I like very much. It is my favorite novel because I like the MC so much. I like how she was not blinded by love and how you should treat yourself better. She was really inspiring and the plot was interesting to me. I like the MC personality and how the plot played out. It wasn't too heavy like the one where I read where they kill each other for the throne and not too much plot on how the women try to... more>> kill each other blindly. Overall, it was nice to read the novel. ^^ <<less

I'm glad I read this one. It had been a few months since I came with novel but I don't want to read it because the DESCRIPTION/SUMMARY is DEPRESSING af. It was very misleading to the readers. Honestly, the first few chapters are unbearable because of too much chinese words that aren't translated. Ugh. But so far, it was worth it trying. The plot is solid as well as the characters. From now on, our MC and ML here in this novel is my favorite characters in all novels. ML... more>> here is not the typical 'overbearing and TOO possessive' on some of other novels. The flow of the story is good tho I like to see more in-depth view of some of the characters in the last few chapters.

It was very nice story... so glad I read it after all the negative comments. I still prefer if the ML is possesive though, this is the 1st time I read a novel where I'm always scared if the the ML will be swayed by other woman..I mean the MC is strong willed and would not reallay care but I still prefer the story where the Love of the of the ML is so strong that the readers won't have to worry.. and thinking back it has already indicated that... more>> it has a slow romance so I should have expected that. All in all its good and I love the personality of the MC !!! <<less

Reborn in ancient time, Qu Qing Ju tries to adapt with her current life as wangfei of He Heng. Been in the entertainment circle in her previous life, QQJ does her best to capture He Heng's heart while at the same time guarding her own heart.

Unlike other woman who want to be the only one for their husband, QQJ is rather easy to accept HH for having several concubines (before marry QQJ, HH already has several concubines). She even manages HH's harem well.

I love QQJ'a character. She's smart and independent.... more>> Although she's a bit cold towards HH but it's understandable because for her, HH is destined to have many womans and she doesn't wanna live a miserable life because of love.

I love HH too. He's loyal towards QQJ. He also tries so hard to prove that his love for QQJ is real.

Spoiler

Although after becoming the emperor he still has 2 concubines, but they are merely decorations in the harem. In the end, QQJ is the only woman in his heart until his death.

Very romantic novel. Both MC and ML are likable and quite realistic. There were not many actions or suspense moments, but the plot is still interesting (I finished reading in 2 days). The only drawback is that it was somewhat hard to read in the beginning since there are a lot of Chinese terms.

I love the interaction between the couple, the ML fall head over heels for the MC, and the MC is level headed, too level headed. She's being realistic, people in ancient times used to not have a monogamous relationship, thus she keep her heart to herself. In the end, times would tell about the love between the two of them.

The women in here some of it are intelligent (as the MC said; the empress, MC popo, and one of ML cefei) but too bad they lived in an ancient times,... more>> so they bound with some rules.

"Man with ability, usually they wouldn't care how much women spent and how valuable was what she wore. There were only two types of men that criticized women for being extravagant. One type was the type that had no ability. The other type was he had a change of heart."
I love MC thought about that, maybe it's just justified herself being extravagant, but she surely try to live to the fullest.

I also like the MC's popo thinking, she doesn't try to dictate her son, and though in the beggining she doesn't like her erxifu but she doesn't try to make it difficult for her in front of others. Also, when the MC acting naive towards her, it's just makes me giggle.

The translation is very detailed, there's also lot of footnotes and some of them contains pictures. It's interesting, we can learn a bit about the chinese culture. Thanks translator. <<less

About the title:

Plainly, it is a mockery. What is the meaning of virtuous and who decides it is so? Is it women, is it men, is it society? And a woman working by her own designs within society's framework... how far can she go without her virtues being put under question?

About the summary:

It is so misleading, that I held off reading this story for a long time. This isn't about a transmigrated female character out for revenge, this is about one who cares *nothing* for revenge and just wants to... more>> enjoy life. She's struggled in her original life to live well and meaningfully, and takes her 2nd life as a bonus where she desires to, for once, go after what she wants without worrying for the future. After all, she's died once, hasn't she?

As for the story review:

In a setting where the 2nd Prince He Heng has just married a Princess Consort, he desires a wife of equal standing, who isn't meek and timid and bows her head to everything. He himself has a strong personality, is subtle in his ambitions yet determined to see them through and often uses indirect ways to get them done.

So really, the transmigrated Qu Qing Ju is PERFECT for him. She wakes up in the ill body of the original consort and goes "welp, guess I'm stuck here. Might as well make the best of it." Practical, pragmatic and also super indulgent, her motto is 'live well for as long as you can, so that you have no regrets'.

Spoiler

Considering it's an arranged marriage, they have to go through the whole process of falling in love together, but our MC is, like I said, very practical and realistic. In such an era, where harems are the norm, how does one expect fidelity of one's husband? So she's pretty blaise in her attitude towards the ML, if he likes her, he can keep liking her and she will reciprocate equally. If he stops liking her, well, it was good while it lasted, she'll just continue on living her best life.

Poor ML feels as if he's getting strung along by his devious, pretty and clever wife, but seeing as he genuinely loves these traits of hers and feels it is compatible to his own personality, he keeps pursuing her. He wants someone who can keep up with him, and honestly, MC seems to be doing it without trouble or conscious effort. He Heng really falls HARD.

MC slowly realises she's catching feels though, which makes for a beautiful ending where she expresses as such to her husband, who has been patiently waiting for this.

[collapse]

The transation is really good. At first one might find the chinese terms used excessive, but they add a certain flair to the story. Just keep pushing through, this is one of the sweetest stories I've read with very little angst between the main couple. <<less

Rate: 8/10 - Such a good story to read, simple and outspoken.

A romantic fairy tale with the "eccentricity" of ancient China: the abandoned bride, the harem, the palaces, the jealous women, the spoiled daughters, the handsome princes, the "to get the emperor's favor", the destiny... and time-travel and transmigration! hahaha

The only flaw, at least for me, is the lack of depth in many moments, especially in the descriptions of the sweetest moments: a little emotion is lacking. There is no development of major conflicts or a plot twist. There... more>> is a very peaceful and pleasant plot to read.

ML: A typical wang ye: proud, superficial in appearance, but with many ambitions. Polite, he is not cruel, but he is also not benevolent. He Heng really respects and has a fatal attraction to FL, however, there is a long development of his true feelings towards FL, his beloved wife.

FL: Live without regrets. Live without fear of death. She lives one day at a time, taking advantage of life's opportunities and pleasures. Realist. Calm. Indifferent. Elegant. She doesn't know how long her husband's favor will last, and will go to other women. That's the reality, so she doesn't fall in love.

FL and ML are very compatible! I like it.

This is the world of men. Women are only objects / properties. How a noble family raises their children will determine their entire future, the future of the entire family. For the first time I was not angry with the antagonists, I just felt that they were a little regrettable. : ( <<less

This was the first C-novel I read and I didn't have any expectations going into it. I've now re-read it three times already and each time I noticed an extra detail or a hint of foreshadowing and can't help but like the story more. It's beautifully written.

The story is very slice-of-life. There's no major conflict, but the relationships between the imperial family and the development of the MC/FL's romance keeps the story entertaining.

FL is one of my favorite characters. She's realistic and pragmatic; clever... more>> enough to know how to survive in the world of men, yet smart enough to not be entirely dependent on a man's affections. Her EQ and ability to handle herself is praiseworthy, yet she's also vain and proud. I really liked her outlook on life and on love.

The many Chinese terms used in the first few chapters might be off-putting for some people, but I think they're really important in establishing setting and atmosphere of the scene as the social hierarchy and structure affects each and every interaction. The translators / editors provided footnotes and a glossary which was extremely helpful!

TL; DR - One of my favorite stories. Excellent translation. Definitely recommend. <<less

So the novel is at most an entertainment.

Spoiler

I resent that the evil women all got terrible fates but the evil men only got a slap in the wrist. Third prince, after beating up his concubines and wife and letting them die, shouldn't have died peacefully in bed surrounded by his wife and kids. I don't care how in love he was with MC. I understand the time period was misogynist but in a way the author is too, even if she's unafraid of critiquing the society at the time.
