Yu Ziyou and Zhong Wan served different masters.

They had once been the closest of souls, and were the bitterest of enemies.

After losing the fight for the throne, Zhong Wan brought his two young masters with him far toward the borders for the sake of survival. He relied on the little friendship that existed between him and Yu Ziyou when they were young. He borrowed some of his personal belongings while also dropping various hints around which made everyone think that there was something intimate going on between them.

Given the Yu Clan’s powerful authoritative presence in the imperial court, this appearance of a close tie allowed Zhong Wan to live a much better life than before. As such, the stories he cooked up began to carry more and more weight.

As rumors of their lovely romance spread a thousand miles into the horizon, Yu Ziyou, who was located in the distant capital city, eventually caught wind of his deeply moving and epic love affair. In a trance, Yu Ziyou, who had been completely brainwashed for seven years, believed in them. He guessed something special really did happen between them back in those years…

Really heavy into imperial plot. That's all I've got to say about it.

I am not a person who much enjoy this type of novels and there is a good reason - it is always goes round the same thing - 100 sentences of contemplating about throne succession or country struggles - 2 sentences of actual action - repeat indeffinetly. Completely boring, to be honest. Though, I must admit, almost everytime writing style is incredible.

Anyway, to call yourself BL you have to have a good romance line - and here it... more>> is, emmm, awkward as hell. And also hilarious. Just a mild spoiler to summer up the romance essence:

Spoiler

Zhong Wan took a deep breath. Striving his hardest to suppress his pounding heart, he said in a hoarse voice, "I... Can I kiss you?"

Yu She was speechless.

Incredulous, he looked at Zhong Wan, lip twitching.

Zhong Wan feared that Yu She would call for his guards to beat him up, rushing to clear his throat. "If it won't do, then it's fine. I'm leaving."

"You... " Yu She's expression worsened after he had heard Zhong Wan's words. He stared at Zhong Wan with disbelief flashing in his eyes. "Can't you read the atmosphere?!"

Probably this type of romance made me finish the story? <<less

It's one of the best historical romance BL novels I've read, and I totally believe that the author had been writing this novel for 16 years - and very, very grateful for their work.

It's funny, it's full of drama but not to the point you kinda wanna kill yourself rather than continue reading, as it is the case with similar stories (Lord Seventh I am looking at you), and the relationship between the MC and ML are still captivating even if you know they're both love each other early on.... more>> There are still stakes, there's powerful desire to keep reading and find out what's next, and there's the best ending possible. <<less

Honestly I love this novel! The two protagonists, Zhong Wan and Yu She are absolutely lovable. I just feel so bad for them because they have to suffer so much! The MC, ZW, is just hilarious and his antics either give me second hand embarrassment or make me laugh on the floor. The ML, YS, is also hilarious, but because his way of thinking is just absolutely bizarre.

The plot is incredibly well written, I've cried for the characters a few times and the author makes sure that something interesting is... more>> always happening. There is a lot of backstory as well as scheming that just fits perfectly with the plot of the story. I also love all the foreshadowing! The schemes are really well written and although the protagonists do occasionally don't have all the info and occasionally get tricked, they still are strong and are able to maintain everyone in the palms of their hand (after some hard work of course). The author does a good job of mixing in scenes that make you want to claw your heart out from pain and scenes that make you want to face palm. All in all I have no complaints whatsoever about the plot and I think it is very well written!

The characters are all loveable! The MC and ML are just hilarious, and although they are very smart, they are still s*upid in our hearts. The twins, Xuan Congxin and Xuan Yu, are precious. Congxin is a strongwilled young lady, and Yu is a s*upid little brother. I love them so much. I also really like Lin Si (i think thats how you spell his name), he's just amazing. Xuan Jing is s*upid and I love him as well. Really, all the "good guys" are just loveable. The "bad guys" are all really well written as well. Everyone has motivation and a purpose. I really like how their backstories entwine together to either make you hate them or pity them.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS NOVEL IS AMAZING. I 100% recommend this novel, although, it can be very heavy at times. The plot, characters, etc is all just incredible! <<less

This story is really a great example to writers about how misplaced humor can ruin a story. The author could clearly not decide what sort of story they wanted to write. Is it a tragedy? Or a comedy? Whichever it is, it isn't executed particularly well.

This novel is hilarious yet at the same time the story contains a lot of angst. The character build up of the main characters are so so, even the world building is so so. Nonetheless, this became one of my favorite BL Novel. I really really love the interactions of the MC and ML. Their craziness (mostly of the ML) and misunderstandings (believe me there were a lot of this) made this novel unforgettable for me.

I love how they were never on the same page.

I love how they low key... more>> care fo each other.

Spoiler

I also really like the low key confession of the MC before he left the ML 7 years ago

[collapse]

I love how they live for each other.

And many more. So in short even though the novel itself is not that great, the main characters interactions greatly make up for it. ❤ <<less

The rating is a placeholder only... until I find out how to not vote. Since I want to read more, to properly rate the story.

The biggest selling point until now is, in my opinion, it's humor, which reminds me of a Shakespear comedy. Every person has their own goals and they usually clash in a hilariously way. If this is something you enjoy, you may give this a try.

The plot is logical enough and most characters got at least two dimensions. Some may even get three in the future.

One last... more>> plus - at least for me: The ML's characterisation is one I rarely (never?) encountered. So I like him a lot.

(Sorry for the crippled English.) <<less

It made me laugh in every chapter, there were moments of tears, and I can see myself re-reading. Irregardless of any flaws, these simple aspects are enough to make a great story.

I usually don't care much for the plot if the main characters are interesting enough and have enough chemistry holding the book together. Such characters can overturn a lackluster story for me. This is exactly that type of novel. I am a huge fan of slow burns, even ones where they don't confess till the very very end. This was a great slow burn and I absolutely loved their chemistry to bits. Plus Yu She being suicidal but wanting to stay alive for Zhong Wan was surprisingly beautiful. Zhong Wan... more>> being absolutely shameless while Yu She having his sets of rules and beliefs was another thing I liked. Overall, I really really enjoyed reading this novel. <<less

3.5 Stars: Dropped - C67

Personal Enjoyment/Overall: 3.5 Stars

Stopping at C67 because I am satisfied with where the story is at. The couple have admitted they really like each other to the other person and most of the important mysteries are solved. I'm not really interested in the rest haha.

... more>> Writing/Translation

The translation I read is from Perpetual Dreams. The translation is pretty good.

Plot

The plot is a mixture of the advancement of romance and political intrigue with lots of secrets. The first 30 ish chapters or so was kinda eh because there are so many hidden things. You read from a surface level perspective of what is happening right now. Then, we unravel the first few layers of the past for these 2 characters and start to get some interest in them. Then, from the 50th chapter onwards, oof, all the barriers break down and you completely understand their emotions, thoughts and feelings. I admit, it was so full of the feels and angst and love haha. From this point on, the view of the mad and reckless ML kinda changed completely. He's actually really doting and loves the MC like mad. I stopped at chapter 67 because I feel like the romance has reached its peak and I don't feel like it's needed to read to the end. It seems like the rest is political intrigue which I’m not really interested in since we kinda know the ML’s origins now and that was the main mystery. The couple is also together now, so no more suspense there haha. What's left are the Mc’s ongoing effects to get laid which isn't interesting.

Romance: 3.7/5

The romance is okay for me. I admit, the constant breaching of consent everywhere is finally getting to me at this point. At the beginning, I wasn't bothered because of the writing. It was humorous and kinda lighthearted and the definitely didn't not like it so I wasn't bothered. But there are so many throwaway and joking comments to give sleeping drugs wtc that it is starting to bother me. Consent is sexy.

Characters

The main characters are the most well developed. The side characters are kinda just there. <<less

Worth the high rating.

Way funnier than I was expecting. Author knows how to balance humor with gut-wrenching angst.

TW for the ML, he's a bit suicidal and in a bad mental space but don't worry. He's a good boi. Anyone who thinks the ML was 'creepy' and 'unfair' to the MC is just... adsfkj missing the plot frankly.... more>>
Spoiler

And hey guess what, the ML is allowed to have boundaries too, not just the MC and shouldn't be called 'abusive' just because he doesn't want to have s*x with the MC immediately. yeesh honestly these bad reviews are so ridiculous.

[collapse]

MC is very clever but also the places his brain goes is hilarious. His belief and love in the ML is so good, because yes! the ML is good! and his outrage over what happened to ML is also great to read.

What's better than a badass couple being protective over each other.

The political stuff is fairly easy to follow (especially in comparison to some other novels phew). Even if you don't get it immediately, it's all explained over time.

Read it and have fun <<less

The book at the beginning was interesting and a nice read, but honestly it quickly got boring. The politics of the novel didn't amount to much in my opinion, I just couldn't bring myself to care about ... more>>
Spoiler

the identity of Yu Ziyou's parents.

[collapse]
That they went to *such* lengths to build tension for. Long paragraphs about the certain nature of political strategies and the relationships from one high ranking official to another and their background, ahhhhh, had me really wanting to skip them.

I seriously felt this book dragged on for longer than it should have.

And what other reviewers mentioned was the highlight of the book was the critique of mine: the relationship between the two main characters.

Yu Ziyou was so wishy-washy it was annoying, I couldn't figure out at all what he was thinking. He treated Zhong Wan terribly and kept enforcing these weird rules and expectations?? Then getting mad at Zhong Wan for expressing interest. Honestly, what a jerk. You could argue that he was confused and didn't know what he wanted, plus battling low self-esteem and some bitterness at Zhong Wan and their past history. And in that sense it really is a lot more complicated than it looks, but these things were too complicated and in the end it didn't justify his actions.

And Zhong Wan wasn't completely faultless either. They both exhibited bad behavior. I don't know... I don't think trauma is an excuse to lash out at other people in Yu Ziyou's case. And with Zhong Wan... it's complicated. It's hard backtracking and figuring things out when you have an unreliable narrator. I'd need to reread to properly understand the motives of early Zhong Wan and I'm not willing nor do I care enough to do that.

Eventually the two left those things behind and had a really fluffy and cute dynamic (Zhong wan is hilariously h**ny, it's occupies his mind 95% of the time). But for me the damage had already been done.

But well, if you enjoy political drama and questionable male leads, humor and lots of embarrassing moments, then hey maybe this is for you. It's not really a terrible book, I just didn't like it for the reasons stated above. <<less

3.5 stars. This is kind of a comedy despite the dark story - political intrigue, mu*der, tragedy, etc.

This is a bit like a tragicomedy, if there is such a genre of books - crack-ish with zany moments, but serious when it needed to be, full of mystery and political intrigue, with the past being the key to understanding the present. The political intrigues were really fun to read - a large part of my drive to continue this novel was to unravel the suspense and mystery behind Yu She's past... more>> and identity. I even drew a relationship tree to figure out all the different bits of information and how everyone related to each other. Lots of fun. I also loved the crack and comedy between the main couple lol. It's hilarious. There was also emotional angst and more serious and intimate moments.

Unfortunately the suspense that kept me going kind of dies off at about 70%. Yu She's past is revealed, and the last 30% is just a bunch of political schemes as he and Zhong Wan maneuver the other characters to where they want. It felt like the novel was steadily increasing in tension, and then plateaus at about 70%.

Still, quite a fun read if you're looking for something a bit tragic but also a bit comedic. <<less

A great read if you're looking for some humor and not deep extended plot.

It's lighthearted for the most part but it can kick you the moment after when it's serious and make you heart ache.

I loved the two main character and their dynamic/history with each other. While unraveling Yu She's character chapter by chapter I couldn't help but feel very fond (and sorry?) of him.
Though when the main duo are together their shared braincell just vaporize and it's hilarious LOL

The side characters aren't that fleshed out but they're likable and contribute mostly to the humor, and oh boy if they do (honorable mention goes to Steward Feng and his *attempted* tries to be a wingman).

I would recommend this if you're looking to laugh your guts out while having the angst (that's never heavy) balancing out the sweetness lol

Couldn't separate from my screen ngl ngl.

Plot vise, story vise, chara vise, it's brilliant. If there's one thing that bothers me a little it's that it lacks spice. Likeeee, it's not that I'm obsessed with spice or smth, but the fact is, this smells so spicy but it got no spice. Makes you feel a little like someone stole from you? Truly the MC is just my type of fave. Their dynamic is so great, and the whole time it be looking like ML fell first but as always the... more>> tags do not lie, and it is indeed MC who fell first, tho it looked like ML was the one chasing the whole time. The other CP is real interesting too, too bad it's not made into a side story. The twins, tbo just let them switch places? I mean, if they gotta cross dress so be it lol, tho the end result is not bad either way.

Loved it! It's great to read while you are in exams period at university (lol talking from experience). It's entertaining, but not super heavy plotted. As long as you remember the important characters you have no trouble understanding the plot.

The MC really deserved to be happy, I'm glad his bitterness isn't in vain. He's also really cheeky and entertaining, a true bother to the ML at first so I enjoyed his character a lot.

All in all an easy reading, with nicely written characters. Btw the background characters also have personalities... more>> so I appreciate that as well. <<less
