Yu Ziyou and Zhong Wan served different masters.

They had once been the closest of souls, and were the bitterest of enemies.

After losing the fight for the throne, Zhong Wan brought his two young masters with him far toward the borders for the sake of survival. He relied on the little friendship that existed between him and Yu Ziyou when they were young. He borrowed some of his personal belongings while also dropping various hints around which made everyone think that there was something intimate going on between them.

Given the Yu Clan’s powerful authoritative presence in the imperial court, this appearance of a close tie allowed Zhong Wan to live a much better life than before. As such, the stories he cooked up began to carry more and more weight.

As rumors of their lovely romance spread a thousand miles into the horizon, Yu Ziyou, who was located in the distant capital city, eventually caught wind of his deeply moving and epic love affair. In a trance, Yu Ziyou, who had been completely brainwashed for seven years, believed in them. He guessed something special really did happen between them back in those years…

Political intrigue, toxic ambition and greed lead to one of the most complex, straightforward and engaging romances. Our leads are loyal to a fault. Most obvious our MC to the family who raised him. The slow reveal of his connection to his family, the ML and the truth of the ML's painful existence is mesmerizing. Their interactions are funny and bittersweet. The ultimate conclusion of the throne and our Leads places in the greater world is satisfying. The politics are handled so they propel all the action of the story... more>> without taking over the touchingly funny romance.

I really adore this story and can not emphasize enough that anyone with even a bit of interest in romance should put this at the top of their list. <<less

To be fair, this may be more deserving of a 2.5/3 rating, but the ratings are way too high for what is a pretty mediocre novel.

Joke's on me for actually finishing this. What a waste of time...

I thought the premise sounded fun and the reviews praise it to the sky, so it must be good, right?

Not really. It starts of well, recounting a court intrigue years before the beginning of the beginning of the actual story. The MC is the foster son of a disgraced prince whom he owes a... more>> debt of gratitude, so he's toiled for years in a God forsaken part of the country trying to keep himself and his young foster siblings alive and safe from court schemes and a mistrusting emperor. He's partly relied on a past relation / friendship with the ML, a son of another powerful prince to maintain some standard of living and has spun a fake tale of romance with the ML (whom he hasn't seen in years) as proof of his close relationship. Now he and his foster siblings are being called back to the capital, where he has to avoid court intrigues and comes face to face with the ML, in the meantime as changed from and upstanding and gentle youth to a blackbellied, deranged man - a man who knows all about the fake love story the MC has cast him in.

The plot summary on NU isn't that accurate. The fake romance rumor is used for some funny parts in the first few chapters, and then it fizzles out. For a comedy this novel is surprisingly unfunny, mainly because the humor is just wobbly and weird, with the MC being scheming and smart one moment, and the next oblivious and sometimes downright dumb.

The characters are two dimensional and never really come to life. I got Wei Wuxian vibes from Zhong Wan, but he was never convincing as a supposedly smart character. As for his shamelessness - I guess it's there, but it's just juvenile without really being funny.

The ML, Yu She, could have been an interesting character, but the author doesn't seem able to go more than skin deep into the characters, so the ML feels like a missed opportunity. He's borderline obsessive with the MC, but we never really see how he develops feelings for Zhong Wan, so his present day obsessive behavior doesn't seem all that justified. I get the idea of him feeling like he only has the MC to live for, but the relationship between them is pushed forward in odd leaps and jumps. The rest of the characters are very much under-developed, although the long-suffering steward who's a hard CP-shipper is relatively amusing a bit of the time.

The first 10-20 chapters where okay, I was waiting to see how the writer would develop the characters and the romance, and how the crazy rumors about the fake love affair would provide some good comedy. But nothing truly interesting ever happened. The real plot was boring. There's a twist to the ML's identity that's revealed way too soon, and then it's just very boring court schemes and fights for the throne.

A lot of character motivation seems like the author just picked it out of a hat:

Spoiler

The MC has been in love with the ML since they studied together as teenagers, but this is just a fact that gets dropped on the reader halfway through the story, and it doesn't feel realistic because it's not described why he falls for the MC. The MC's constant devotion to the ML in the beginning seems really out of place, since he places care for a crazy guy who literally bought him as a s*ave and kept him (instead of setting him free if he actually wanted to help him), and later harasses him - I know the MC did it first back in the day, but he had a clear motive (wanting to escape and join his family), and there's a huge power imbalance between the ML who's an actual prince and the MC who's technically still his s*ave when they meet again. It makes little sense that the MC would leave his foster siblings back home to care for a crazy guy simply because he had a crush on him 7 years ago.

[collapse]

There's a side couple that could have been fun to ship if it had been developed beyond mere cameos, but is too half-hearted.

The writing is easy to read, but bland. I don't mind characters who drop swearwords all the time, but here it felt out of place. The dialogue doesn't even come close to resembling how semi-historical aristocrats would speak, the dialogue is so crude. Could have been good since the premise was actually interesting, sadly the author didn't have the skill to write a coherent story.

Can't believe the author spent 16 years on this story, and it baffles me that so many people like this book. I guess it's more enjoyable if you enjoy the humor, I've just read better and funnier novels as well as better court intrigue stories and romance stories, so to me this didn't deserve the rave reviews. <<less

Going to aim for this to NOT have spoilers.

I saw this book in a list of recommendations a long time ago and while the dramatic set-up sounded interesting, I never got to it until I saw the manhua adaptation. The level of comedic WTFness against a backdrop of some really sad and messed up events was intriguing, so I switched to an English translation of the novel and read from chapter 1 of the novel, and can't be happier that I did that.

The novel has a charmingly written narrative, and... more>> the part I saw beyond the manhua unfolded in a way I enjoyed and that broke open some of the tropes one can expect out of a couple gets closer to each other. The banter between the couple and their interactions with other people include a lot of light-hearted and dark humor, which helped characters to be memorable. The discoveries they have along the way makes this a novel worth re-reading, as some of the lighter moments have more shadows and knives hidden in them than one would think upon a first read.

While I feel that this novel had a simpler story than some novels I read involving political intrigue, because the two lead characters were so fun to root for as they tackle external and internal conflicts together, I felt that I would definitely re-read as a favorite.

Just to give context into my taste - when it comes to the humor and chemistry between a couple, my favorite couple has been the couple from Peerless/Wushuang and I'm happy to find another couple that enjoys flustering each other as much as that couple did. <<less

If you enjoy comedy, hilarious miscommunications, fluffy CP and a decent dose of politics sprinkled around, you'll definitely enjoy this novel. However, if you wish for a more powerful plot with heavier politics, lesser amount of comedic misunderstandings and more on deliberately supportive CP, check out Qiang Jin Jiu don't expect much from this novel.

The Plot and writing:

    • I'll start off with the writing. It's genuinely good. As a person who prefers reading political intrigues, this novel did not disappoint in terms of the language and tone of the novel. In terms of descriptions of characters and feelings too, the writing itself is superb. I could not find major flaws in there.
    • In terms of the plot, the politics is decent. There were some things I could predict, some I couldn't, and it gets better towards the end.
    • The comedy is hilarious, although at some points it did give me second-hand embarrassment.
    • In my personal opinion, the miscommunication and misunderstandings (all of them are comedic in nature, not angsty) were overdone a bit and it gets boring after a while, but then again this is just personal preference.
    • The overall flow of the plot was decently smooth and well-paced.
    • Overall a 9/10 for plot, I just don't like excessive miscommunications.
The Characters and CP:

    • MC and the ML both are decently written characters, although not very deep. It doesn't dampen the enjoyment, as the novel is more of comedy than heavy plot, but for a person like me who loves more rounded characters, they do feel a teeny tiny bit mechanical.
    • One pleasantly surprising part was that the characters are generously flawed. Not as much as I'd like, but way more than I had expected. That is a very big plus.
    • MC is somewhat stereotypical (a genius, drop-dead gorgeous, master at politics etc, etc) but that does not matter much. He's shameless and I love him for that.
    • ML was (again) surprisingly non-stereotypical. I mean he still had the perfect-crown-prince-material, genius and all those perfect ML characteristics, but he was also darker, with mental illness and depression, something not commonly seen in dameis, especially one with such a comedic feel to it. I am very very impressed.
    • The CP as a whole is endearing at some parts, hilarious at some, very powerful at some and yet annoying at some parts (again this is more of personal opinion, you have to read the novel to know for sure).
    • The side characters are also pretty good and interesting.
    • Overall the characters are a 8/10 and the CP is 6.5/10.
Translations:

No problem in this aspect, the translations are great!

TL;DR: Great novel to read for fun, not very heavy, yet cute enough to make it enjoyable. Give it a try!

This is currently my favourite novel and has been since I finished it last year!

I have to admit the plot may be a bit confusing and some of the mysteries a bit meh, but characters and dynamic is REALLY good.

Fell in love when they were young, separated by their own responsibilities yet they've been saving each other despite the distance all along...

I might be one of the rare breeds out there that thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

My biggest gripe is the synopsis. It is VERY misleading in my opinion. A better one would be:

"Yu Ziyou and Zhong Wan were childhood reading partners. Circumstances in their teen years forced them to become close souls. They eventually parted ways and political matters forced Zhong Wan to bring his 3 young masters to a distant city for survival. Using his friendship with Yu Ziyou as leverage, he was able to gain favor with the locals/city... more>> officials which otherwise would have been impossible. He even went as far to create stories about him and Yu Ziyou being intimate.

Undoubtedly, these rumors spread, making their way to the capital city. Yu Ziyou became to know them very well. Zhong Wan thought he was in the clear by making these stories up, "I'll never have to see him again." he says. Until, the 3 young masters he's been serving are called to the capital for an event. Yu Ziyou is aware which families will have estates and will make appearances, but Zhong Wan thinks he's still in the clear. Until, by fate, he is met with a chance encounter: "Tall, with a black fox-pelt cloak draped over his body. Standing outside was Yu Ziyou, his face an expressionless mask."

This original synopsis I think gives some information, but almost feels like the book was changed after the synopsis was written. A VERY political novel. But it was a breath of fresh air, seeing politics and power struggles, instead of the normal fluff in novels. I am a simp for character building/growth and this novel had some pretty damn good examples of this. They could have been fleshed out a little more, but when the novel finished I wasn't concerned about things being left unresolved. I felt like my questions were answered. And I felt warm and fuzzy too. You can tell there is a decent amount of comedy, but it helps lighten the dark themes this novel explores. For those of you triggered by reading certain topics, I'd highly suggest checking the tags.

If you need something light to read and would like to experience a throne power struggle/politics, check this one out. <<less

I really love the interaction of the main CP, they are hilarious. I just wished the writer explored more on the side CP, I think they are also cute.

The MC's sweet and a little pervy. Lol But don't get me wrong he's really smart and can think of ways to save people most especially his loved ones, he's a tactician actually which helped Prince Ning's household-the children a lot to survive the heavy political burden they were facing. He sacrificed a lot.

The ML, ohhh poor guy. He's driven to almost... more>> insanity because of the people around him. Thank goodness our MC gradually heals him. I feel bad for him turning deranged because of the palace intrigues and political power struggle, when he's definitely the victim here. There's trigger warning for his case here (su*cide), and you really can't blame him.

I love steward Feng, poor guy! Hahahha! Good thing he's loyal to our ML, he's a little wingman. I also love the twins and feel bad for their elder brother. *Sigh*

That said, please give this one a try. There's a lot of flashbacks in between and you might get confused at first. But after a few chapters you will gradually adopt to them. Also be mindful of the tags, it's there for a reason so if you're not comfortable, then might as well skip this one instead of givingit a low rating just because of that. <<less

I finally made an account to just write a review for this novel because it's really nice. I wanted to add on to the people that stated good points about this novel because I almost got discouraged due to the mixed reviews but pushed myself to try reading a few chapters and it is very interesting.

Although it confused me at first, I stayed for the dynamic of the MCs. I label this novel under my "light read" which only focuses mostly on the good vibes and could re-read if I... more>> ever wanted a laugh (I also put Golden Stage in this label but they can't be compared to the plot and heaviness). I strongly suggest this to people who wanted to read those things!

Bless the author and translators <3

Spoiler

When the occassional angst hits, it really hits... or maybe I am just a bit too emotional because I got attached to the MCs and only wanted everything good for them. They're both extremely wonderful by being the same level of shameless (MC Zhong Wan actually kind of reminds me of Song Ci from FDCM except ZW is 100x more shameless). The MCs misunderstandings are only funny ones so it's 10/10 for me.

At first, I wanted to quit because of the lack of romance at the beginning and the odd narration style that mixed both tragedy and comedy typical of 'tragicomic' genre. It is difficult to read about torture, violence and cruelty, and right after, having the protags or others laugh it off or making light of it. 'Tragicomic' is not my fav genre, but it fits well in this novel, as it serves to emphasise the conflict and contradictions in the protags' mind and hearts. It also conveyed well the chaotic... more>> mind of a madman. ML is called a madman here but of course, it's more likely he has mental health issues, specifically bouts of depression, suicidal tendencies, occasional fits of violence, irrational behaviour and reasoning. For an ML who does not even know who to love or who to hate (by his own words), the tragicomic style fits him well. Like him, I also could not discern the who, the why and the what. Author skillfully makes me laugh one moment and cry right after. This tragicomic style also fits well the personality of both protags. Both protags are extremely conservative, introverted, pure, shy, proud, arrogant and easily embarrassed. Communication is difficult between such people. Thus there are plenty of theatrical misunderstandings between them. The misunderstandings lead to more laughs rather than melodramatic angst, or else I would have given up. There is no real angst in this novel. My tears were mostly from their nostalgia and happiness and also silly antics. Hence, in order to enjoy this novel, one must get used to the theatrics of the characters. This type of comedy is quite prevalent in c-novels.

Because of the lack of romance at the start, I almost gave up but the romance does pick up after 30 or so chapters, as the protags unravel the past and learn to trust each other again. Author conveys well the depth of their feelings and how conflicted they are. They both liked and resented the other. They both wanted to protect each other, yet both had no power to do so. They both had deep feelings but due to nobility status, politics and familial complications and countless other implications, they could only conceal, pretend, lie, mislead and suffer in silence, for 7 years. Following that is pure moments of sweetness, forgiveness, nostalgia and fluff. This novel feels very complete and well-written, not surprising since, apparently, author spent 16yrs writing this!?! <<less

A cute (most of the time shamelessly cute), fluffy story with cliche but at the same time, not so cliche palace politics. It was interesting in the beginning but got boring towards the end, I was reading for the sake of finishing the novel. The ML is mentally ill, I am not sure if he manages to cure, or rather, manage his mental illness better in the end. I am ok with mental illness, but I don't think that it was particularly handled well in the novel.

What I dislike about... more>> the novel is that there are modern terms used that ancient people won't use. That adds to the comical element which some might appreciate. This novel is not a WOW, but if given another chance I would rather not waste my time on it. The chapters are too long as well. But I would say, the pacing of the story is good, though boring. <<less

I LOVE THIS

I didnt expect that I would love this so much. It started slow, but since ive time I kept reading and eventually binged till the end. The build up drama, the feelings of both MC n ML, the side characters, and the ending is so beautifully well done. Ive been thinking of several situations for the ending but the ML said nope- my kind of ending is 100x better. I love both the ML n MC so much ❤❤❤

MC - Zhong Wan

Spoiler

He has so much loyalty towards his foster parents, that he would do everything for their childrens and doesnt care about his future n feelings at all. At first we readers would thougt that the rumors he created regarding his and ML loves affair is just a play, but he actually had loved the ML since long ago! That's y when he come back to the capital he feels so much for MLs suffering. I love it how he's upfront and shameless with what he wants, since the ML is so much tsundere that if the MC doesnt have this kind of personality, they would be virg*n for life. I also love how his heart doesnt waver and he stay by MLs side always, coz honestly, thats what the ML needs the most. And then I also love how when they got together, MC doesnt keep things in secret with ML anymore. He straightforwardly tell his findings, the things others threat him with to the ML (which saves a lot of misunderstanding and drama)

[collapse]

ML - Yu She

Spoiler

Damn this one ML really makes one heart ache. At 1st he was shown as crazy overbearing ML who wants to force himself upon MC, but he is actually a tsundere virg*n who learns things from BL books! He is all talks and no real action (in romance) , which makes MC frustated. He is actually an honest gentleman turned mad cuz of the harsh palace drama. I feel so sad reading about his depression and suicidal thoughts. He literally attempt su*cide several times! He feels like he is not worthy of MC and feels like he doesnt have much to live so he only tease MC but never tried to have a relationship with MC cuz of that thoughts! Everyone around him wants him dead, hes so pitifullll I really felt his sadness when he had that depression fit after he thought MC left him. He really only cares about MC and not everything else. On the silly side, he loves to brag about his relationship with the MC to random ppl and that is so adorable! He's tsundere power and ability to misunderstanding things is pure gold, MCs reputation amongst the ppl is destroyed thoroughly bcuz of the MLs silly side

[collapse]

The Side Characters -

I love how we get just enough about each of the side characters, and the story revolved mostly around MC n ML. I didnt really like when authors focus on side characters too much that they all got background story etc. Here the side characters just have enough appearances that still makes me fell in love with them. The twins, the stewards, Xuan Jing and Lin Si. All adorbs!

The Villains -

I love it how the villain is also not given some tragic backstory. They are thoroughly black to the bones, up until the end. They each deserves their endings

The ENDING -

Spoiler

Yesss.. So I really thought that Yu She will become emperor at the end and after a while passed it to Xuan Yu. I sometimes thought that maybe Xuan Jing had a chance bcuz even if hes s*upid, hes not that cruel and scheming. But I never thought that Yu She will just f*ck it with being emperor, all I want is Zhong Wan, and Xuan Yu became emperor right at that cute age!

[collapse]

The Translation -

Good job to the translation team/translator. I dont read much ancient/ royalty related novel becoz of the terms sometimes confusing me, but the translations have this notes that explains those so I enjoy this novel thoroughly.

This novel is definitely in my REREADING list, I would reread it again, the whole novel and not part of it bcuz its just my cup of tea! <<less

ML abused his power to arrest MC's friend (who he called 'mute dog') and threatened to torture him just to get MC's childhood nickname. And he felt pity for MC because the mute dog gave out the information without getting any injury. He must be so proud of his achievement. Jack@ss

YOU HAVE TO READ THIS GEM

I can’t believe how many times I laugh while reading this novel. My nurses even looked at me with scare when I read this while waiting for my next patient. The story well written, the translation is top quality, the plot is marvelous, and don’t even let me praise for the author’s humour. One os the best comedic duo I ever read.

This could be written as tragedy. The MC should be someone who could live in glory, noble bloodline, wonderful family and step parents, brilliant... more>> brain. He should live as someone who could make greatest achievements in history, but all ruined and demoted to s*ave. He then using all of his effort to raised the three children of his savior’s remnant at very young age. Lower himself and throw all dignity just for raising these three well. Then we have this gentle and upright MC who went crazy after learning the truth about his birth.

It could be tragedy, but the author decide to throw these tragedy and turn it into comedy. In one chapter we could have our mood from almost crying into bursts in laughter. There’s a thin line between genius and s*upid to the core. The MC is so smart but shameless (and h**ny) while the ML is crazy. Literally crazy, he sometimes having episodes of madness. And all side char also adorable. You’ll love the twins especially Congxin, and also steward Feng. Poor steward Feng, LMFAO. The misunderstanding created between all of them are hilarious and top of the top.

Read it, and let us laugh together while we learn that in life, we all just need simple things to be happy. <<less
