This Venerable One Really Didn’t Abandon My Familiar

Feng Ci pacified the Four Seas, created the Six Sects, single-handedly rescued all life under Heaven, and was regarded as the Grandmaster of Salvation.

Later on, he grew tedious and randomly found a cave to seal away all of his magic items and a small, skinny black snake that was unable to change form no matter what. Manipulating the boundaries of the realms with Dao, his spirit left to wander the great cosmos.

This abrupt journey lasted 3 thousand years.

3 thousand years later, Feng Ci’s divine consciousness returned. Not only had his little black snake and the magic items disappear, even his physical body vanished without a trace.

Feng Ci settled into the body of a youth who just lost his life. Forced to leave the mountains, coincidentally, the Immortal Alliance just happened to be accepting disciples.

Sitting above on a high cloud terrace, with black silk covering his eyes, the legendary coldblooded and merciless Leader of the Immortal Alliance, Pei QianYue, said coldly: Terrible innate constitution. You can go sweep the floors of the outer sect.

Feng Ci: …… Who talks to their Master like this???

After that day, a new disciple arrived in the outer sect.

Good-looking in appearance, cultivation hard to describe in words, and exceptionally lazy. A salted fish who did nothing but eating, sleeping, and waiting for death all day.

Everyone joined in the wager, betting how long it would take for the Leader to sweep him outside the door.

Until the Immortal Alliance turned traitor and the rebellion army marched straight up LinXian Terrace.

Feng Ci casually broke off a branch from the cold plum tree. With a light wave, the sword light shook the Heavens.

Then after that—

It’s said that the Leader knelt in front of the room of that outer disciple for three days and three nights, but still didn’t manage to enter the door.

I actually finished reading the main story quite some time ago. It's been months since then. After finishing the main story, I was not really in the mood to read the extras just then, so I had bookmarked it.

Just now I finished reading the extras and honestly, I'm kinda mad at my past self who was also thinking of just not reading the extras at all (especially because of the sumeru worlds extra, because I didn't think that they would be that interesting and how wrong I was about... more>> that!)

The extras are really really really freaking good and I feel so glad I read them! Especially the sumeru world ones! They r the cutest. I was thinking of not reading them because I thought that I don't wanna read the whole story in modern world and how they would die and all but I was completely wrong because the extras are mostly of their childhood and super cute! The late stage of their lives and death isn't even there in the extras so I feel dumb for not reading them before lol.

But yeah anyways, about the story, all I can say is - AMAZING! I definitely recommend this novel to everyone, it's a very good cultivation, master - disciple novel and I am very satisfied with reading it. As I read the main story quite some time ago, I can't write wat I might have felt after completing the main story but rn all I feel after reading extras is that how glad I am that I came across this novel. It's definitely 5/5 stars worth.

The story is so interesting and I just love this couple. They r absolutely adorable! This was a great read!!! I'm very satisfied with this novel.

Good Novel! But don't expect an exciting one. No annoying characters and the characters are well defined. But this novel seems a lil monotonous due to lack of story tension and some dialogs/monologs.

The ML never force the MC in the novel, though the ML is a little pushy and acts pitiful most of the time, u won't get annoyed. Well, I will really feel bad too for ML, waiting his master for around 3k years alone in the mountain, getting a false hope, was hurt and had his eyes blinded.... more>> Fortunately, the MC, returned (a little late).

I wish for more world hopping in the extra but doing so will make the quality of the novel low. <<less

It's quite early (10c) so there isn't much inside into the story or characters.

So far the MC is likeable enough, he's somewhat childish, mischievous, not what you would expect from someone his age.
ML is the typical cool, slightly tyrannical danmei Gong, but he too is interesting enough and not too unlikeable.

The story is promising, yet I already feel somewhat annoyed, mostly because of MC's and ML's interactions.

MC doesn't want to reveal his true identity but keeps poking ML's curiosity, trying to make him guess who is is.

Whenever ML asks questions that would partially lead to the right answer, MC lies... then gets disappointed/annoyed by ML not wanting to keep guessing.

It's like an elementary school guessing game but one party plays dirty, then blames the other for not winning.
Both are thousands of years old, not children.

Hidden identity can be thrilling when done right, but this isn't it, I only hope they end this before I'm out of patience because the story isn't half bad.

Update Chapter 18:

Still not resolved but now they are pulling the aphrodisiac/h**ny poison crap with a sprinkle of bestiality between tiny immortal and giant snake (literally and metaphorically).
Ight, imma head out, good luck to whoever's going to stick around.

Pretty boring novel with limited world building and lack of developed side characters. ML is the type I don't like and pushes into non con territory which I can't stand. The first time it happened I wanted to put the novel down and give up on it since it displays the attitude of the author and indicates such things will appear again. I saw I was already half way through and thought I'd skim read it for the plot. There was no point as the story didn't get anymore interesting... more>> and so I officially gave up the 2nd time it happened as it made me too sick to finish (ML sexually harrasing MC when completely paralysed). I wasn't convinced by the relationship so I was pretty flat reading it - MC sees ML simply as his pet who he needs to pamper for the first part, then realises ML desires him sexually and seems to go with the flow since his teenage body is h**ny. Up to where I read MC doesn't seem to have any particular romantic feelings to ML but ends up in a s*xual relationship with him due to guilt, the fact ML is the only friend still around, horniness and the fact ML will go crazy/kill himself if MC leaves again so he's stuck with him with no other choice. The only redeeming thing is that MC actually returns the s*xual interest from the start so their relationship isn't completely non con like other bl novels. Another thing which annoyed me is that MC is 3000 yrs old but still acts like a teenager around ml, I suppose this is simply so ML can bully MC and take advantage of him so they can have the same relationship dynamic as other bls. In short - don't bother reading this if you're looking for a good romance novel. <<less

A super chill, lighthearted and fairly fluffy cultivation story.

I enjoyed it a lot because I was looking for something more purely simpleminded for entertainment.

Don't read it if you expect something earthshaking or super dramatic/mystery/action based.

... more>> IMO the story is fine as is. It's like a light bubbly drink, good to read when taking a break from the heavier stuff.

I also really like super strong MCs, and the main couple are both very OP. In this case, the MC is even stronger than the ML since he is really the OG grandmaster.

Translation was pretty good, cultivation novels are not easy to translate, so I give the translator kudos. <<less

It was interesting then got a bit anti-climatic for me...I think this story would be more suited for a more brainless romance and fluff plot... this novel reminded me exactly why I prefer modern bl and avoid historical/cultivation novels.

Disappointing. I really had to fight on to get through this novel.

This kind of "romance" is worse than no romance at all. They are dragging it out as much as possible, they are together for all the wrong reasons and have zero communication. It feels like the writer wanted a tsundere MC and a cool but pampering ML.... went wrong on so many occasions. It ended in an indecisive s*upid MC, and a ML with a personality disorder like there were two different people.

The story itself is just strange.... more>> The idea was good but it can't draw a person in. The side character are 2d, well... the main character are 2d too. There are lots of logic holes.

I would not recommend this novel. I read it to the end but felt rather bored and annoyed with it. <<less

Pretty good. To note, the pacing is done extremely, extremely well. Even the ending was well paced.

The mystery wasn't too complex, but it was satisfying enough. Not too shallow. The characters are good too. The ML and MC are a little 2D but fleshed out enough that I never got bored with them. Their dynamic was very nice; with MC spoiling his snek snek ML. ML is really, really cute, in a tsundere black-bellied way. And it's refreshing to see him having MC wrapped around his finger, instead of the... more>> other way around. And MC is very willing to spoil his snek snek.

As another review said, this book is very straightforward. Nothing too flowery, or over the top. The straight-forwardness might not be to some people's taste.

The mystery/background context
Spoiler

Is that, 3000 years ago, MC left the world after saving it. But before that, he passed on his knowledge of the cultivation of the Dao for his disciples to carry on. Note that, 3000 years ago, there were barely any cultivators. There were no big sects or cultivation books. Rather, people had to figure stuff out on their own. So when MC passed on those "sacred cultivation texts", that basically gave people a way to cultivate, the world's population of cultivators exploded.

As the years passed by, more cultivators = more exploitation of natural resources, i.e. spirit stones, which power everything. Think of spirit stones as coal or oil. The world basically became very greedy, and heavily exploited the natural land. The "Heavenly Will" predicted that, in the present day, if this went on, the world would become extinct in 1000 years.

When MC ascended, he left his physical body behind. The Heavenly will basically wake that physical body, and randomly selected a bunch of sects for the physical body (without MC's soul) to kill. Basically, by culling the cultivators, the tax on natural resources would lessen.

[collapse]

So...

Spoiler

The plan was, the soulless body would go on a mu*der spree to cull the population, and then MC's purpose for being called back into the world was to kill the soulless body after the culling was over.

[collapse]

The mu*derer is

Spoiler

MC's physical body. Who is being puppeted by the "Heavenly Will"

[collapse]

How did ML blind?

Spoiler

MC's soulless body needed a sacrifice to return to full power, so it was hinted by the Heavenly Will to take ML's eyes--but those eyes had to be willingly offered, so the soulless body tricked ML and took ML's sight.

[collapse]

MC's original wish

Spoiler

He thought that he was supposed to die, 3000 years ago, but somehow he continued living. So his goal this time, originally, was that once he finished his mission, then the Heavenly Will would free him and he could be a mortal and die. Because being an immortal is super tiring, and taxing on his mental.

[collapse]

The ending

Spoiler

Is really good, and not very rushed.

I'll make this short. They basically spoil Heavenly Will's plan, and ML tries to sacrifice himself, offering his 3000 years of cultivation up, to take on the punishment MC would have received for resisting the Heavenly Will. MC arrives in time, just as ML is about to die, and subsequently, Uno Reverses ML and takes ML's place as an envoy of the Heavenly Will again. The deal is that he has 1000 years to try and prevent the world's extinction, and if he succeeds, he will be free again. If they both fail, then they will be greatly punished.

MC laments that he's once again bound to immortality, but this time, having recognized ML as his love--and realizing that he had come to see ML as a reason to continue to live, so he has ML to accompany him the entire time. They are super lovey-dovey.

[collapse]

Revised ending

Spoiler

I didn't like the revised ending, but in the revised ending, MC basically fights the Heavenly Will and takes his place. This happens in the last two chapters. I didn't finish reading it because I wasn't interested, felt a bit too Deux Ex Machina for me. Because for me, I felt that, even if MC ultimately fell under the Heavenly Will in the end, it was not a bad end by any means. He is happy, and he has a forever lifetime to spend with ML. Not all endings need to be grand and crazy and circumvent the current norms. Being ruler of the world is cool, but it's not my style of ending.

[collapse]

If there's one thing I didn't like

Spoiler

Though the ending (original) was good, I'm not fond of how MC and ML basically left the world to triapse around in parallel worlds together. Because even though they came up with some measures to slow down spirit stone usage, like, it feels a bit irresponsible. Especially considering the horrible end that awaits them if the world goes to sht at the end of the 1000 year time limit. MC's attitude is basically "leave the troubles for future me", which I'm not a fan of. I thought they'd go more hardcore, implementing rules and regulations, etc. etc.

But they don't leave for a long time, so it's aight I guess.

Not a perfect story but I have a thing for OP protagonists so I gave it a 4 rating otherwise it'd be 3. The actual reveal of the mysteries felt bland and the final fight/solution seemed so half assed but I still enjoyed reading this novel. Focuses more on their relationship than the plot and that's what some people like but this novel would be so great with such dynamics if the plot was written in a better way.
Spoiler

I want to read more about the sumeru world extra especially the angst part. Felt like author wanted to avoid making people sad but I really wanted to read about MC dealing with the grief of losing ML. It only said how MC cried so much and followed after ML but I wanted more details and some angst as that life for them ended in a tragic way. Welp I guess that's what reading erha more than five times did to my mind

It's an easy-going read with all its own mystery.

I think the way it's written focus more on the relationship rather then the mystery or the plot. But the plot is still there.

I actually really enjoyed it.

... more>> There are a lot of interesting side-characters to cover the lack of world building. Although there aren't much stories about side-characters, but their presents are enough to make the world feel lively.

The relationship between the main pairing was a bit dull (because how easy it seems), but at least imo it's healthier than a lot of xianxia out there. Their interaction also still entertaining to me.

Overall it's a solid four for this one. But I will give five stars to make the rating higher. <<less

I’ve managed to make it to chapter 35 of this novel and although the translation is good, there’s just something about the overall characters that fell flat.

Maybe it is due to it being more 2d and the lack of world building, but I tried to keep reading only to be constantly bothered by the characters and the whole mystery surrounding the sects.

I’m usually not one to stop reading with the mystery unsolved, but I feel like I already know where it was going and I feel like I got confirmation... more>> after the monks scene. MC is a world-hopping immortal on a continous mission by Heaven's Will, one day he's given a premonition of apocalypse in his home world and goes back to find 1) his physical body is gone! 2) the cute little pet snake he raised is a brazen sect leader and 3) someone is mass-mu*dering the lesser sects and needs to be stopped. This starting concept felt very unique and intriguing to me, and I went in with high hopes. After all, you don't need 500+ chapters to flesh out a nice... more>> story, look at Cherry Blossoms Upon a Wintry Sword and The Wrong Way to a Demon Sect Leader for cultivation stories of similar lengths which turned out quite nice reads. What let this story down is the broad strokes with which the author painted everything.

Spoiler

MC and ML have been tragically separated for 3000 years and at the beginning, when MC's soul inhabits the body of a youth who's a total stranger to ML, they often play this tug-of-war mental game with guessing MC's identity. And as soon as ML stops "pulling" aka trying to guess, MC gets all petty about it. Like... ? Why are you so intent on lying and keep your identity hidden if it bothers the fact that ML doesn't press you for answers? This served the author the function of establishing that MC is not the perfect immortal that the side characters think him to be, he's fallible and human, but considering his eons-long life, it just reads as childish. Even when I read till the very last word and understood what the author wanted with this kind of scenes, I still think that a world-hopping thousands-years man would not be this petty, and it left a jarring impression on the characterisation. Like, if this character contradicts himself and acts irrational, why bother with his lofty background story at all?

Another instance of the author using broad strokes for this novel can be found in the plot. If I had to put a tag on it, I would use "Case Fic" cause the underlying rationale behind what these characters do comes from the imminent catastrophe and the mass mu*derer. both of which suffer from the author moving along a bit too fast for my liking. Imagine if the scenes of the MC and ML finding the slaughtered sects played like Record of a Missing Sect Master? That would be so sick. Each scene would have been described poignantly and give you shivers of anxiety and terror, and each plot point would be foreshadowed just a bit for those readers who pay attention, and introduced properly when the time comes, so that everything flows at a nice consistent pace. Whereas here, you mostly hear about the massacres, and the protagonists only inspect two mu*der scenes very swiftly, and visit one potential victim sect (which marks the only properly fleshed out arc). So much wasted potential.

And finally, I don't like the fact that the author starts the novel with a focalized narrator on MC and shifts to omniscient narrator with additional momentary shifts between MC and ML. This was very bad because you don't need to show scenes from the pov of ML at all, his utter devotion for MC bursts at the seam from the beginning, that part is written quite well. Whereas MC, the character who has most need of being carefully analysed due to his background story, ends up not being described properly. How does he change from a lofty, impassive person to a tenderly loving shou? Who the hell knows. The texts goes from "my family's snake was so small and cute, now overbearing and ruthless" to "I just want to kiss you all the time, of course we can **** any time babe" Like... lol. There's a gray area in the middle of these stages where MC is often incapacitated and ML rubs himself on MC sexually and MC gets hot and bothered and frustrated before pushing the other way, but as far as feelings development, you need to read the author's mind to fill in the gaps.

What's half-assed the most is the world-building. Half-assed Heavenly Principle role, half-assed the whole 1000 years catastrophe, half-assed """"solution"""" to prevent it and half-assed lifestyle that the protagonists live after the ending. Like these two deadass hear a premonition of worldwide catastrophe and go "who cares about that as long as we get our thousand years together and spend our honeymoon world-hopping, let the secretary deal with that shit" Most half-assed ending I've ever seen fr.

If a 3000-year long yearning isn't bait enough, then I don't know what to tell you...

This is MY cup of tea. Putting aside all my usual disdains when it comes to cultivation novels—due to my lazy disposition—I'm actually a sucker if you insert a juicy romance. I'm talking longing that feels like my chest is about to collapse, a slow burn that could evaporate my soul, & at least some proper smooches if censorship is apparent. This novel's not the best in terms of overall execution, but it sure... more>> is a pretty good & straightforward shizun-disciple take. Reminds me of White Cat's Scratching Post, especially with the parallels in leaving behind a cute pet for thousands of years until they cultivate into a human. I don't know if you can even consider a snake cute though...

Let me emphasize this again, I was in it for the romance, NOT PLOT. The latter is kinda rocky & I will turn a blind eye from it for the sake of my pairing. <<less

Dropped around chapter 52. Picked up as a light read but couldn't bring myself to finish it.

The pacing was not very good and got very boring for me around chapter 40.

The characters are... fine. I'm not too big a fan of the MC, I had a hard time grasping his character, I guess hes smug?? but also nice?? The ML is a bit better, he's ruthless but in fromt of MC he's selling meng it's very cute

Some of the scenes had very cool imagery and the premise sounded really nice... more>> but overall this was a bit of a letdown for me.

Quite a satisfying read. And the tester is somewhat different from typical novels, so it was even more satisfying.

For me, this story was quite down to earth in way of emotions, relationships and characters. And, strange to say, I’ve enjoyed it. Main characters and they conflicts and relationships were not plastic, but complicated and layered.

I like the main couple. I can clearly feel they pain and happiness, the same as how they develop and grow though the story. There is no dog blood, and I can’t say it’s a fluff,... more>> but there is good enough amount of nice and sad. They relationship are quite down to earth, not overly fantastic with flowers in the air. I feel like this is a one more kind of love, but more realistic and cozy. Not even sure how to explain it normally.

There is a comedy undertone here. I’ve really enjoyed those funny moment and jokes to my fullest.

Recommend to not leave out the extras, as they are making the story ending a bit more complete and sweet. Also, there are two versions of the main text ending, I’ve decided to choose an original one. Not sure why people are unhappy with it. It’s not a BE. But yes, like the whole novel, it’s not a pink colored one. Still, like it.

About plot. It’s not bad. I, personally, guessed most of the things early on but that didn’t change my evaluation of the story. It was still very nice read.

Recommend you to give it a go. It’s not long, but the plot, characters and comedy are all here to make you feel good. And it’s vibe is really quite unique. So, I recommend. <<less

Fun and entertaining read. Our MC is op and funny (because he is the heavenly son) ML on the surface cool and dominating, but infront of MC always act pitiful and sajio and alot of schemes. (Can’t blame him though, MC leaves him for 3k years, anyone will be mad or gone crazy with that) This story is actually quite short, but what keeps you reading is the paces and the little bit of mystery that keep you wondering and those face slapping moments MC gives out. And... more>> of course our little snake ML acting cute and clingy are all the fluff in the book. Even with the comedic undertone of this book there’s also abit of drama and why even ML wanted to be salted fish is more than feeling tired. Really recommend this read, if you like the genre. I didn't expect this novel to have such a Completed Perfect Ending without leaving us wondering curious, but the author actually cleared everything!!! The Extras completed everything!!!

Sure it may not be a 'perfect' novel, but the story was Clear and Easy to understand, not cliche nor common, but not exactly new either. But the way the author wrote it was Enjoyable and Pretty Good!

No Evil, just people and 'God' with their own believes and all. Dislike people or stuff, so yeah, there's Villainess, but can't say purely Evil whatsoever.

Enjoyable Characters... more>> and Smooth Story line. So yeah, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! <<less

I loved it so much. Wonderful work. It is well-written and interesting. What I find intriguing is that most novels about cultivation are plot-oriented, romantic scenes are scarce or contrary relationships, romance comes first, and plot is neglected. But in this case, it is well-balanced. The story-line was interesting, and we also got a lot of romantic scenes and interactions between MC and ML. There were a few good plot twists, too. Also, it has many funny and lovely scenes.

The title of this work kind of gives us what the... more>> core problem of the novel will be, but at the same time, it isn't completely true, and there is much more going on than this. Yes, the novel mainly revolves around MC's relationship with his abandoned little cute snake, but it also deals with the investigation of the mass mu*der of cultivation sects. There are a few arcs that are truly interesting. I liked that the reasons behind those mu*ders were truly unique. I think the plot developed logically, and everything was connected perfectly.

The characters are very good, too. MC is a chosen one; he once received immortality in order to save the world, and he did, but the cost was too great, and now he is tiered and numb. At the beginning, MC's actions feel a little bit off. He doesn't act like a 3000-year-old immortal. I thought that maybe the author made a mistake, but later I found out that I was wrong and that this character acted like this for a reason.
Spoiler

He is just tired. He saved the world, but he was left alone with terrible memories. He tried to escape from this, but even after all those years, he is lonely and can't find his place in this world. Everyone he truly loved is dead, and new relationships don't interest him because he is immortal, and everyone he will meet will eventually die, but he will still remain. Apart from that, he has seen many failed love stories. Now he just wants to die, and before he gets what he wants, he acts like it's his last day and tries everything that's new for him. Sometimes he goes with the flow, and sometimes he acts on whim. Also, he feels guilty because, at the end of the day, he truly abandoned ML; even worse, he lied to him. Because of this lie, ML waited for him for 3000 years. That's why he feels guilty and indulges ML in everything and dotes on him.

[collapse]
ML isn't a human; he is a demon. When he was just a little snake, MC saved him but eventually left him behind. Despite this, he never stopped loving and waiting for MC. But after waiting for him so long and searching for him, his character became a little bit cold. Also, he is a demon, so most of the time, he just doesn't care about anyone and has pretty questionable and ruthless methods. Strangely, MC enjoys it when ML acts cold and ruthless. He is extremely indulgent towards ML. Sometimes they bicker, but in any case, their interactions are entertaining.

The most interesting character, in my opinion, was the villain. I love the stories where we don't have typical characters. I enjoy stories where you can't blame anyone. No one is perfect; everyone makes mistakes, but at the end of the day, everyone has their own reasons, and you can't even get angry at anyone. This is exactly that kind of story.

The novel has some really sad moments. I felt sorry for many characters, but I would say that it is still light reading. It was fast-paced, short, yet gripping. Yes, the author could have paid more attention to the plot and added more investigation scenes, but I liked the story as it is. There are exactly as many descriptions and details as are needed for the story. I think the author did so on purpose; in this way, the novel is light reading without angst, gore, or drama. It has quite a unique plot, so I would gladly recommend it to other readers. It reminds me of "Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, " "The White Cat's Divine Scratching Post, " and "The Villain Has Something to Say." Readers who liked those works will definitely enjoy this one too. <<less

The concept is fun, the tl is mid. Overall it's not a bad read but I'd recc you read the original ending and not the reviewed ending, just because it's a lot more enjoyable thematically and packs a hell of a lot stronger punch in the heart, while the reviewed one plays more on the girlboss angle. I hoped we'd get to see the other characters in the extras but no. They also did not take the chance to go the fresh and interacting route with the snake form, and... more>> instead chose basic vanilla. It's also a pity that they weren't a switch. Censorship is def a killer here, but what can you do. <<less
