This Marriage Is Bound To Sink Anyway

The plan was perfect.

And there was no better match than the prim playboy of the Escalante family.

“After we get married, everything will be different. You will be more free than before our marriage.”

“What about you?”

“Under the duties as your wife, I will do what is justifiable. It will be done regardless of you.”

“So, you’re saying you’re going to have a child but you’re not going to do this kind of thing with me?”

This was because she didn’t need a decent husband, but a man who would someday be legally removed from her life.

When he can fill the petition up with the names of the women he fooled around with overnight, then she can become a successful Ortega woman.

But then…

“I am not going to lay a finger on a woman who is not you, and until you give birth to a child, until you give birth to the next child, and then regardless of any child, I will satisfy you and I will make you satisfy me.”

“……”

“I don’t need such dog-like freedom or privacy that you want to give me so badly. There’s no such thing as that in the first place from the marriages I know of.”

The Duchess of Escalante refuses to live with the Duke of Escalante. Divorce due to unilateral fault.

“I’m a son of a bit*h but I’m more faithful than you think. Inés Valeztena.”

Inés Valeztena strives for a wonderful life.

“So I will never betray my family.”

Until her promiscuous fiancé betrays her by saying he will not betray her.

“I’m sorry, but you can’t live a life separated from me. Inés Valeztena.”

Carcel's cheating in the beginning when they were engaged was wanted and condoned by Ines. She chose a playboy for an easy divorce, so if you have issue with reading about his cheating early on, don't bother because it will happen. I notice people think it's an issue when Ines was looking for a playboy to marry.

Spoiler

She manipulated him into thinking that it's normal for him to be a cheater because he has such a handsome face. She keep telling him that it can't be helped, that she is okay if he doesn't love her back, she's okay that he is surrounded by other females cause she's willing to share him.

As for Carcel, he had liked her from a young age but was brainwashed into not knowing or understanding his feelings because of the way Ines would always tell him that he doesn't love her. Carcel had also brainwashed himself to deny liking her because of his pride. She had ignored him as a kid and so he would rather think he wasn't interested in her than admit he likes her.

[collapse]

After marriage he never cheated on her. The romance is very slow because it takes Ines up to late volume 3 or 4 to finally like him back.

I think the author writes very poetically so at times it would feel like a drag (and lots of flashbacks) and some sentences fragmented but that's only if read in small doses. As someone who was able to binge the whole thing, it was beautifully written though I was disappointed with the ending. I had wished for the "villains" to get more punishments even though I do think the ending choices really fit well with the characters. They've long moved on and focused on themselves and their future.

I do love both the main characters, Ines and Carcel. Though some parts are tragic, the author was able to balance it with some lighter tones in between the tragic pasts. The ending is not tragic in any way.

As other reviewer mentioned, don't read this for the smut since the smut scenes aren't that great in the beginning, unless if you like dirty talking, it's right up your alley, but actual smut scenes are pretty lacking until much later on. The smut scenes progress with the characters. <<less

This is my currently favorite knovel. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.

I'm not good at writing a review but because this is my favorite so here's my opinion about it.

I like the plot and world building. Though it can feel too verbose to some readers, I love author's writing style because it felt unique and different from other korean novels I've read.

I love the characters, even the side characters, they all have flaws, everyone is not perfect. ML is definitely the best ML. He's a big puppy type of guy... more>> and throughout the story you'll see him crying a lot.

Actually, reading the comments, I'm surprised people still bashing him for cheating in the first chapter, like why though? Isn't it clear from the synopsis that FL chose him because he's a playboy? So I think it is very insignificant to bash him. Like I said, they're not perfect, including ML.

I'd recommend it (10/10). It had a happy ending, but the epilogue made me sad
Spoiler

it's about their first sad life

[collapse]

If you're here for the smut you'd be disappointed. Cause rather than describing the 'scene', the author was more focused on making the leads talking during the smut (but a lot of important conversations for their relationship developments). <<less

Sorry to @znukhsoc if they feel I misunderstood their review. I tried to explain it from what I understood of their review and yes, I admit I am obsessed so I had apologized for sending them the message. And no I didn't only leave messages to people who left negative comments on my site. If anyone had ever read far enough, there are people who will leave positive comments. I respond to almost all comments, negative and positive. It was just that this person only read the few beginning parts and the beginning parts only have negative comments so obviously, I'll only have negative comments to respond to. It's ridiculous to make that assumption about me.

As the translator who had read up to the latest chapter, I think I should... more>> address this. I think some readers pick up this novel expecting cliches or the typical rofan but this novel is more realistic than most. It's set in a pseudo-Spain environment during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Catholicism is huge in this novel. There are actual Bible quotes. I had warned many readers in a note as well as in spoilers. As for Ines with homophobic character trait, no, she isn't particularly homophobic. If someone had read up to chapter 26, I had explained it there but since someone didn't, I'll explain it here.

Spoiler

I don't particularly think Ines scorns bis**uals or gay, but she probably views that Oscar most likely had gotten stds from male prostit**es, so it's Oscar she hates but she used homophobic words to insult him. In general there's a huge setting to Catholicism in the plot so could be that. That's just how I viewed it. Carcel disliked homosexuals more. Ines could care less about people to care if they're homosexual/bis*xual or not if they don't affect her life. It'll get shown later on in volume 3 when she just casually asked someone else if he likes her husband. Carcel got more offended. She doesn't really care. If a guy likes her husband, she thinks it's normal since her husband is good looking. She has no qualms to really care about it.

There are multiple instances when homophobic topic is brought up later on and she doesn't care about it. The time when she asked a guy if he likes her husband and another time she was wondering if she was to be reborn a male, Carcel who didn't like gays because he used to be harass by them would hope she won't but she didn't care. Later on in the side story, his love for her would just go over his dislike for gays that he doesn't care whether Ines is a guy or not. Either way h*mophobia is more part of the setting that gets brought up.

[collapse]

If readers are sensitive to it, then I can understand not picking it up but I had put up many warnings and explanations for it, so perhaps why it wasn't brought up until now. Despite this, it's still my favorite novel because of how realistic the relationships are between the characters. As for fluff, it's not a fluffy novel. It's quite heavy and realistic aside from the "fantasy" moments that are also linked to the religion itself. So yes, it's "not for everyone" as I've mentioned. I'm someone who can still love a work despite those flaws but someone else can be more sensitive to these parts and not like it, but spreading misinformation because you haven't fully read enough to understand something makes a review unreliable. The same can be true of saying Carcel confusing his boner for love.

Spoiler

He didn't even realize if he loves her at that time. So many readers kept thinking either characters love each other in the beginning but Carcel only realizes his love at the end of volume 2. As for his boner, he only started having them ever since the dream in the beginning but the dream is triggered because of an event. The reason why the dream even happens is explained in the epilogue (volume 8), so his reaction to it is because of feelings from past lifetimes. Even with Ines' manipulation it appears someone misunderstood that. She didn't manipulate him to love her. She manipulated him to be scare of her so he wouldn't love her and want to divorce her later on. And her manipulation worked until he had that dream and he was no longer scare of being with her.

[collapse]

But as mentioned, it is very slow paced so it takes volumes to understand the characters. It's possible not to fully understand a character even very later on in the novel. <<less

Edit2: Read the manhwa and REALLY enjoyed it since they don't come out so very freakin' arrogant with that art style. Unlike the novel, the pacing is nice and I love their facial expressions. I'm SO VERY glad that they didn't include the h*mophobia part. Still can't like the FL since her solutions to specific problems are just silly to me but I'm willing to give her a chance since it seems like the manhwa will be a little bit separate from this novel.

Here is the main review:
"Not for everyone" is strong on this one. Especially if you don't like cold FLs.
With cold I mean, really stone-cold, not character-less but a real strict one in a really dumb way. Poor ML's struggles were %100 caused by her. What bothered me the most was many of the main problems in her own life were created by her own actions... After learning about her past lives, it all makes sense, yeah, but in all 25 chapters I read, I felt like this story was testing my patience.

Even if there's the most absolute love ahead, the pacing was making me older page by page. Her character didn't help. ML would be quite okay if he didn't confuse his love with his b*ners. Can't blame him since she brainwashed him beginning from age 6.

I tried to like FL. I really tried but especially her homophobic side made that mission impossible. I can't understand why the author put that as a character trait. It adds to nothing. I'm surprised no reviewers talked about this. (Edit1: h*mophobia exists in this book either way if the character learns to better herself or the old times + the religion + poor education pressure them to think so. It's there like translator themselves stated it. I just find it heinous to read about, especially when a main character does it.)

25 chapters were enough for me. Dropped.
--Originally it's a 2 star story. I'm cutting a little more for the dissatisfaction it gave me.--

Edit 1: About the translator:

I found it interesting that the translator was answering nearly everyone who left a negative comment on their site... Which I didn't do, instead I left my review here. Naturally, this review is full with my preferences. Pointing fingers at it don't make much sense.

And then, they left 3 long messages to my inbox and write a review here to only explain some other points. I ain't gonna argue all of them if they're true or false (since I don't disagree with all of them) but they didn't even read my review right before criticizing it:
MILD SPOILER
Spoiler

I didn't say she brainwashed to love him. She indeed brainwashed him to be scared of her only to use him later. Now that he likes her ofc he's gonna be confused. Poor ML.

[collapse]
<- I was thinking like this before learning from the translator's review that ML's homophobic tendencies are higher than FL... It doesn't matter if it's part of the setting. Yeah. One more of a letdown.

Well, it's all okay since the translator knew how obsessed they are. I kinda understand their feeling. No need to be salty about it and send people personalized messages. Any novel on this planet gets negative reviews. ✌
That's it, thanks for your hard work!

Still doesn't understand the FL supposed "brilliant" plan, ok so she decides to get engaged with the ML for the sole purpose of getting a divorce, she "brainwash" him into cheating yada yada, alright, but how exactly is him cheating serve to help the FL in getting a divorce when adultery is apparently a common occurrence and is not a solid enough reason (in their society) to get a divorce? The FL then goes around the high society persuading and influencing other nobles women to get a divorce too in... more>> order to destigmatize divorce (wow so realistic, just a few words from out brilliant FL, bam instantly goes away deeply ingrained societal taboo 🙄) . I'm preeeeetty sure there is easier way to have divorce than that.

Anyways, just imagine if the roles is reversed lol, I can just imagine the outrage if we have a (reincarnated adult) ML manipulating (grooming) a young FL into becoming a promiscuous woman lolololol. Everybody would be disgusted but here everyone treat it as cunning brilliant FL, the double standard😭😭😭

Another thing, I'm so sick of ppl excusing h*mophobia etc as "it's bc the novel is realistic for the time-period", bit*h since when is reincarnation realistic? Mfs will have fire-breathing dragon, magic shooting outta ur ass then draw the line at respecting gay ppl 🙄 <<less

another review put it perfectly—if the mentally 50? 60? FL had been a mentally 50/60 year old man grooming and manipulating a young girl into sleeping around, this would not be praised so much. Cheating ml's aren't my cup of tea at all and the ML thinking that it's fine to sleep around before he has to do the horrible, terrifying, dreadful task of staying loyal to his wife when they're married is not an idea the FL planted into him; just something his pea brain though up. The FL... more>> molding him into one is just. S*upid. The author goes above and beyond to try and make the FL seem super intelligent and ahead of everyone else, when really she's just a complete f*cking idiot, as are all other characters in this godawful story.

it's clear the horrible homophobic author meant to make a standout story that wasn't "like other girls" aka your typical isekai villainess bs but i'd honestly rather read another cookie cutter story of a korean lady dying, reincarnating as someone who dies bc they harassed the og!fl, meeting the ML who's a black-haired duke of the north nicknamed the reaper of the battlefield or whatever, seducing them, freaking out that they've changed the story, etc. Over whatever the hell this is <<less

Really love this knovel so much!! The author’s writing style takes a little bit of effort getting used to, but everything is perfect. The plot, the fluff, and the smut are all 10/10.

I love and adore the strong independent FL and her backstory. I’m a sucker for strong women characters. I also love the ML, his cute and jealous side as well as his lustful side. Hahaha

Overall don’t miss this one big gem. It’s somehow a slow burn, but it’s worth it if you stick around.

Shoutout to the translator. You’re... more>> doing the world a favor by translating this! <<less

Unlike most novels where it's FL healing ML with bad past. This one is other way around. FL is the one with the bad past and stunted feelings. ML's patience can be seen when he deals with her. Very slow paced but visible development with FL. Seeing all those 1 star reviews. They clearly didn't read novel and just rating on manhwa beginning and rumors.

I’ve honestly been skipping this novel bc of the reviews but decided on giving it a chance one boring day when I ran out of reading material and damn... spent 2 days binge reading this nonstop. Such a well written story with absolutely fantastic leads & great character development. First part was so fluffy and the next parts are probably gonna dent your soul (made me cry so hard 😭) If you’re looking for something light, skip this. Please. This one’s quite heavy with a lot of angst and heartbreaks... more>> not to mention, disgusting antagonists.

Ps. Those reviews focusing on the cheating part obv. never really gave much reading. This has a whole lot of things that makes the cheating issue irrelevant. ML is probably the most selfless lead I’ve seen so far. As for those hating the FL, she is not perfect nor does she try to be. She’s strong in her own way, been through a lot and has grown so much as the story progresses.

Not really a fan of heavy drama, but man I’m in too deep at this point. Y0u’ll love the story if you really give it a shot. <<less

Very interested in reading this story but unfortunately the links dead and I don't think they're bringing it back up quite sad actually. Well since they not planning on bringing back the links so should remove the dead links it not like new readers can jump to chapter 270.

Like the other reviews, the writing is profound but this is definitely my cup of tea. I love the feelings it evokes in me and your appreciation of it might depend on how much you can immerse yourself in the story.

I also recommend you read tler's note first before proceeding with the novel. Nonetheless, this is so beautiful for me !! I love it sm! It's has a distinct plot and I always anticipate how the story will progress so try it out too ~

Read this novel awhile ago. Got bored. Never finished it. Saw the manhwa. Read it again and realized why I never finished. None of the characters are really likeable and it's an eh storyline with some plots that was like wtf is this nonsense. The h*mophobia, brainwashing, cheating to divorce, and all the other crap... It could have been shorter. It was 601 chapters too long, but I guess the pretty cover and somewhat interesting synopsis fooled me.

I've been fortunate enough to have followed this from chapter 1 when the links worked and continue to read this now. This novel is unapologetically a love story between Inés and Cárcel and anyone who says otherwise hasn't read it properly or abandoned before all the revelations in the story. There seems to be a lot of unfair reviews/assessments because of this. Also, people who get hung up about the cheating really missed the point of the plot. It's tiring to read these kind of reviews for this novel and... more>> the manhwa. For some novels I appreciate when people raise a red flag about it so I can avoid wasting my time but it's only beneficial when the ML continues to be a tr*sh bag douche throughout the novel with no redemption arc or plausible justification. This most certainly is not the case here. There's growth, development and reasons that strengthen the story and the love between the leads. The author, Kim Chacha, is not for everyone (fyi, I do enjoy her style and like her other two novels listed here at NU) because she tends to be wordy and in Korean the turn of phrases would be more appreciated than in the English translation but it's certainly a great piece of fiction and not like your typical Korean novel.

Maybe this is OT but when speaking of the manhwa, yes, it's a great adaption of the novel but those of you who compare it to the novel I don't really understand the point of doing that just to discredit the original source material or translation. This is Novel Updates not bato. I think the ratings will be difficult (and probably quite unfair/unreliable) from here on out since the earlier chapters' links are dead and people unfortunately will not be able to read about Cárcel and Inés's very complicated but epically romantic fated love and can only judge from the fact that he was a playboy/cheater and she a cold and uncaring woman. A shame really. I refrained from reviewing for a while but thought maybe I should add my voice since I have legitimately read this novel translation from chapter one. So anyhow, take it from someone who read the translation from the beginning until the most current chapter to date that it is a great novel and meticulously translated. <<less

I did my best to read the novel faithfully but with the author's writing style, it can be a bit dry. It is a bit of a struggle to get through with the story's pacing.

It can be a hit or miss for readers. I might pick it up again but it was not memorable enough for me to continue right now.

The people who keep excusing Ines here are the real blind ppl. The novel does have enough evidence to prove she did manipulate Carcel and it not just to make him dislike her like someone saying and giving false spoilers here. Even the author hinted at it in her Q&A. The author even wrote to someone "I think they're both flawed people, and they're both bad people. To each other. They are selfish in different ways. Even when they were young, Ines overwhelmingly did. In the past life, too." Sounds... more>> like Ines did more wrong to Carcel than he did to her. Person who has been giving false spoilers have been sharing it everywhere, even on tiktok and was caught and this person blocked the person who caught them sharing fake spoilers.

Evidence that Ines did manipulate him from novel:

The way she talks to him manipulates him. She use their society to also manipulate him by letting them spread rumors. He even thought he was a rag before he became one so he slept around because he already thought of himself as one.

Novel mtl:
Spoiler

It was true that thinking I was a rag before I became a rag made me feel at ease. What do I care about a fiance who doesn't even care about me?

[collapse]

Why would be think he's a rag before he became one?

Novel mtl:
Spoiler

"I can't imagine how suffocated I must have been when I thought of the future where I had to live up to my sincere beliefs. That's why I struggled to avoid our marriage and needed a free life to breathe. yes?"

"......"
"It is indispensable. You are too precious to live tied up in the system."
"......"
"I liked how free you were. Even at the age of six, you looked very happy, surrounded by girls... I don't want you to wither unhappily, trapped in systems and obligations."
"... What bullsh*t are you talking about?"
"Don't flowers wither if you pick them? So leave it where you are, and I leave you as you are."
"Apart from being compared to a pitiful flower with this size, so, is what you're talking about brainwashing or hypnosis?"
"Brainwashing."
Ines replied as if it were absurd, but she couldn't meet his eyes.

[collapse]

Just look at how she normally talks to him and she even avoid his eyes that time when he question her on trying to brainwash him. Everytime she talks like that to him in novel, the word "brainwashing" comes up. Ppl who are blind to this just want to pretend to be supporting females but they not rl feminist but ppl supporting a manipulator. <<less

Boring. It's not that it's badly written, but I can't immerse in this novel. I dislike the FL to despise so much people and life. I cannot relate at all and it leads me to find the descriptions uninteresting.

And the format to read is not agreeable.

I've dropped the story, but put 3 stars for the translator ans the writer, who has good skills to describe but sorry. I don't like the characters, hence their lire just annoys me.

For anyone who has seen this novel/manhwa adaptation floating around on tiktok, it's not worth it if you have working braincells. The other 1 star reviews are already illuminating enough, but if you need a clear analogy of how incomprehensible Inez's plan is, I'll give you one.

Imagine that Inez is a young girl starved (of affection). She sees a plate of fried rice left out. She eats it. How could she have known that it's been sitting out for days?!? Inez is hospitalized, maybe she has dreams about the evil... more>> fried rice coming to her, and whispering how 'it's bad enough eating a simple egg fried rice like me, well, be wary of the *crispy* pork belly fried rice with aromatic basil over there!!1!'

Inez eventually leaves the emergency ward with clear trauma. In her sleep, maybe someone heard her muttering about crispy pork belly fried rice, and they've left her a plate to eat. Inez is aghast! Inez is calculating! Inez sits back, eyes becoming bloodshot as she waits and waits, leaving the crispy pork belly fried rice out, sitting uncovered, allowing flies (women) to dirty it and desecrate it one after the other.

Then and only then does Inez eats it. She feels complacent, smug about the fact that at least this time around, whatever food poisoning she will incurr will be because she's prepared for it beforehand!!1!

Ah, it looks like Ines managed to get to it before it spoiled completely. It's a happy, satiatjng ending after all. The end. That's it. That's the novel. <<less

This is actually really good.

Thought this ones not for me since ive seen people constantly complaining because of the female lead. When I read it myself, I didnt see much of a problem. More specifically when it comes to people saying she turned the male lead into a playboy or she made him cheat, Those people sound a lot like pick me girls, "she did that" "she made him cheat so its not really his fault" just gives a lot of "pick me energy" like carcel aint a grown man... more>> and isnt able to choose for himself

In my eyes all she did was simply not love him and she shouldnt force herself. <<less
