*The Four Great Female Constables – Book 2/4

The first time Hua Qianqian met Yeqing, she was angry.

“Are you a killer?”

“Are you a constable?”

A killer meets a constable.

Similar to a dog seeing a cat, there are extreme ferocity and a mu*derous aura.

“I will arrest him and bring him to justice first, then later, you can find a chance to kill him. Then both of us won’t suffer a loss, what do you say?”

Yeqing was speechless. As a constable, she did not stop him from killing and even negotiated with him?

The second time they met, she smiled.

“Why didn’t you do a proper job as a killer but work as a male prostitute to let your chrysanthemum be poked? Did you lose your job?”

“Similarly, you quit your job as a constable and became a dancer, are you unable to hold on to your job?”

“Che! Being a constable is only a part-time job. A dancer makes a lot of money, don’t you know that?”

Yeqing was speechless again. Is the unconventional constable making fun of a professional killer?

The third time they met, she became familiar with him.

“it’s been a long time since we met. Did you change your job to become a painter? Ah……are you painting me?”

Holding up the portrait she cast an ambiguous look at him. To be on the receiving end of a secret crush is a bit embarrassing.

Yeqing said coldly. “That is your reward poster. Someone put up a bounty for your head.”

Cute ML - so honest and straightforward~

This couple's journey was overall fun. I usually have issues with how quick some characters fall in love, but this one was amusing: I like how the author made sure to point out how ridiculous it was that they've only met three times and he got upgraded from brother killer to brother Qing to lover Qing in one night, lol. And it was enjoyable to see how their love became deeper and more real to the both of them over the course of the... more>> story.

I enjoyed the first book more, but the characters in this 4-part series so far have all been amusing. Looking forward to the next two books~ <<less

Don't know why people are rating it lowly but it's a nice short story and a good continuation of the previous one. Good to pass the time with.

Reviewing the entire series:

This is a series of four short stories revolving around four sister disciples who are “secret constables” (similar to underground police detectives) with the main case being Jiangnan’s salt tax evasion, seen from each girl’s perspective, starting with the youngest and ending with the eldest.

I liked the second and fourth the most, and enjoyed them. The first and third were alright, the male leads weren’t to my taste.

The stories have a little background mystery but most of the writing involves the interactions between the couples and sisters.... more>> They are the:

1. “Salted fish” concubine x Arrogant prince who wants her to stop sneaking out on investigations

2. Charming and bold dancer x Blushing (only for her) assassin she likes to tease

3. Aggressive cold beauty x Fool for her crazy gang leader stalking her

4. Trickster merchant eldest sister x Upright official strategizing how to marry her

Pros:

- Most of the relationships are cute.

- The plot isn’t meticulous but still interesting enough.

- Bold and capable female leads.

- Distinct personalities and characterization.

- They’re all pretty comedic.

- Other than the first book’s male lead, none of them are royalty and some of them are even commoners. And none of them become emperor lmao. A breath of fresh air in Chinese historical romance fiction, lemme tell you.

Cons:

- Many things are not fleshed out. If you’re looking for intricate plot you’re not going to find it here.

- Though it’s “understood” that everything is consensual, the actual language and writing involves what I would consider dubious consent. I felt uncomfortable reading some parts.

- And the third book’s male lead pursues the female lead pretty insistently, making her uncomfortable. While she warms up to him, I didn’t really.

- The male leads are always written to be more capable than the female leads. At least in the second and fourth stories the female leads are better at some things (second with wit and fourth with money) but tbh for a series revolving around four female detectives the author praises them but there’s a lack of actual girl power.

- Most of the male leads have a kind of “wife must defer to the husband” mindset. This is true to the time period but not exactly what I look for in a male lead.

Especially because part of what they liked about their wives was their independence and capabilities? So you want her to be capable so she can just sit and wait for you at home?

This is also why the second book is my favorite, inching out the fourth. Even after they get married he follows the female lead’s wishes and defers to her. Even though he has the best martial arts of any of the characters he has the most equal relationship with his wife, imo.

Fourth book’s male lead is pretty respectful, I liked him, but he kind of schemes to keep her busy so she’s not interested in going outside to investigate. Not the worst behavior but it kind of irks me.

Anyways, if you like this type of story give this series a try! They’re all pretty standalone so you can read the one you’re interested in first without being too confused. I wrote a lot but I did enjoy them! <<less

It’s okay.

Spoiler

I mean, the part where he slept with so many women threw me off completely but it’s okay.

[collapse]

a fact for sure is that the ML was long attracted to the FL before she knew him.

Spoiler

It was a bit of a disappointing ending for me. Not in terms of the relationship but the fact that this guy actually associated with the prince.

It’s just a personal opinion but I’m not really a fun of the whole royal family thing any more. Which is why I didn’t read the first book.

i prefer just seeing the ordinary lives of the citizens not the “oh so mighty” royal family *eye roll.*

It’s okay. You can read it. I recommend it somehow. If you’re bothered by the fact that his an assassin, you can stop right at the title please. <<less

I was just constantly being put off by small things. like for example the MC groping her maids b**bs for fun seemed kind of harvey weinsteiny... It also has the good ol sexism that's in every single chinese romance novel I've ever read, saying things like "how a boy/girl should act." By the way I hate the MC, don't ask me why it's hard to pinpoint that kind of thing. In general I'd say the plot feels very lazy and casual and contrived like 90% of webnovels nothing really special here. Apparently it's not even good enough for a worthless neet like me to waste away my endless free time. By the way this is just another example of "oh it's ok if my bf is a killer because he's attractive" this is a f*cking ted bundy novel for dumb b*tches THERE I SAID IT

I fell in love with this series after reading the first book "Wangye, This Concubine Is Busy!". I didn't have a good impression of ML in the first book but I love this book's ML. He was professional killer but he's like an innocent puppy in front of MC. MC was also my favorite smart and strong female lead.

But sometimes, I feel that MC could be a little rash and reckless. I know that she's strong but she wasn't that strong. She's lucky though to have ML's protection because he's... more>> quite invincible.

The ending was a happy ending one but it seemed there were some things that left unexplained till the end.

Spoiler

Who was the mastermind behind MC's assassination attempt?

Well, perhaps we'll know the answer in the next books. <<less

Enjoyable. ML (secret assassin) is sweet and simple whilst FL (dancer) is wily and seductive. The teasing between MC is heartwarming. 3rd sister in the series.

4.5/5 A similarly short continuation of "Wangye this concubine is busy", this is the story of previous FL's senior sister who helped her in the salt tax case in the last novel. I find this novel pales in comparison to the first one as FL is merely portrayed as a dancer who can also fight. She ends up being protected by ML for the most parts, although she did save him once afterwards. ML is your typical silent, seemingly cold assassin with deep loyalty but sparing with his words. They... more>> were quite cute I guess? But they just seem to fall in together somehow which isn't particularly romantic, but unlike the first book there was also no cheekiness to make up for it. Good filler novel and it's ok if you take it as an extra for the series, plus it's short anyways. Still enjoyable nonetheless. <<less

fun read! It’s light as well like its prequel. Leads are awesome. Liked how MC is more proactive than the ML but ofcourse, if pushed he will take the lead. I really like how the author wrote the smut for this series, it teases yet leaves much to the imagination of readers.

The interaction between the leads of this and the previous story is amazing. Makes me look forward to the future interactions as well. Especially this tease...

What Ling Wang did not know was that he would suffer a greater loss in the future because Hua Qianqian was even wackier than his beloved wife.

But that would be mentioned in the future.

I actually liked this book than the first one. I love the female lead and the male lead, there really isn't anything to complain about aside from that it's too short! But considering the story and how it was written, it was a very good one.

Cute short story. MC and ML are both martial arts experts - she's a secret Imperial Constable and by day, the head dancer at an entertainment pavilion. He's a disguise expert and a cold Jianghu assassin. Every time they meet, they're in different roles. They fall in love and she decides to make him hers. She's a great schemer, and he's helplessly in love with her. The plot, pacing, characters, translation and ending are all well done. This is the second in a quartet of short stories, one for each... more>> disciple sister/secret constable. This story intersects and continues the plot from the first book. <<less
