They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost

Hello, everyone! My name is Shen Jianguo. I am a night school instructor teaching ideological development and Marxist philosophy, occasionally analyzing recent policies and measures for my students.

All my classes are held in the middle of the night; I’ve never seen my coworkers or students during the day. The training institute’s classrooms are all in abandoned schools, hospitals, or residences. The license plate number of the bus that picks me up is 444; it always arrives at my house at precisely midnight and disappears at five in the morning.

What? You’re saying I’ve met a ghost? Impossible! As a staunch scientific materialist, I absolutely don’t believe there’s any such thing as ghosts!

I’ve only had one problem recently: couldn’t the training institute hold its classes a little earlier? Wouldn’t around 8 PM do? I fear neither heaven nor hell, but I do fear going bald.

I just want to say that I was hoping this novel would be a bit longer because I don't wanna stop reading it wuwu

This is absolutely one of the funniest and saddest novel I've read in my lockdown life. I pity the ghosts while also laughing because, well, they're so funny and adorable!

Thanking the Author, translator/s, editor/s, and publisher/s for their cooperation in this novel.

Okay wow what a ride!

I'll start off this review by saying how much I liked this novel cause oh my, it's Xmas time and I still managed to read it all in less than 3 days (tho it was mostly today since I got uni stuff to do but was too invested to stop reading), it was such a nice fun read!

The plot is good, and while the book is on the shorter side, it's still pretty well developed and has a good balance between plot and romance (tho... more>> romance doesn't happen until the last few chapters of the book) - it's such an interesting story. This book is more comedy horror than anything, it doesn't seem to take itself seriously, which makes it all so much fun.

    • Our MC, Shen Jianguo, is such a nice person that even I fell for him omg - he's a super righteous man who believes in nothing but Marxism and communism (lol) and he doesn't believe in ghosts, therefore coming up with the funniest excuses for the weird job he got and the peculiar behavior of his students. What's so much fun is that while he is truly a wonderful person, he lacks a lot of EQ, and often misunderstands people's (especially his students) feelings towards him, mistaking a death stare for a thankful look. He is an oblivious idiot. However, he impressed me with his attitude all the way to the end and he really is a great MC to root for. The first person POV is great because you get to experience him being an unrealizable narrator for most of the book ahahaha!
    • Our ml, Ning Tiance, is also a great character, open to learn and develop his perspective on different things without being too judgemental. His relationship with the MC reflects a lot of his own personality, especially the gradual change from chapter to chapter. However, I wish we got to see more of him developed in the story, and more romantic interactions between him and the ml; I think that's the only thing keeping me from giving an even higher score (tho it's understandable since it's such a short book).
    • The school and ghost plot was also really well done and I really loved the fact that every character had a back story and a purpose; each of them triggered a plot change (be it minor or major), which helped a lot with the pace of the book. Even if it was a comedy, the story and plot had integrity and we're well-written.
Overall, a really good book that I highly recommend, it was so funny! I'm on to read other books by this author, she has charmed me, especially with her way of writing characters.

TRULY A GREAT READ <3 <<less

This was very funny. It isn't so much a horror story perse but a fluffy novel. The MC is a teacher who takes the moral stance every time and a firm believer in science. The ML is a celestial master who believes that he has to help the MC stay safe from all the ghosts he's encountered. The last few chapters are extras that retell the story from someone else's POV. There's a few from the MLs, the ghostbus driver, the celestial student, and so on.

Sweet, funny, and heartwarming. MC is a badass, but doesn’t know it. He’s adorably dumb about a few specific things, but is genuinely good-natured. Happy ending, mostly comedy, with a light romantic subplot. The translator is superb; everything is from the MC’s perspective, but the translation clearly communicates to the reader the things the MC doesn’t notice. Highly recommended!

Very funny, and the plot outside the romance was very nice. (The romance was also nice, but it was the outside plot that really drew me in, watching the MC resolve things in his unique way was great)

This is a must read for anyone that love a light hearted and funny story consisting of hilarious misunderstandings of ghosts. Even if you are not into BL you could read this as that is not the focus of the story, and their interactions are light and suitable for children. I love how righteous our MC is but his righteousness come from his heart not from his fist. If you like scary ghost story this is not for you as its not scary, but it is still neat to read... more>> about variants of ghosts. <<less

This novel is lowkey socialist propaganda, but it's pretty subtle despite being really in your face about it somehow, and it's mostly used as a plot device to explain MC's OPness when dealing with ghosts, so it didn't bother me too much. It's told in first person, which I usually avoid as I prefer third person limited omniscient but it's a short read so it's not extended torture if you hate first person novels. The overall tone is very humorous, and the romance isn't the main focus but it was... more>> still a nice addition to the plot.

MC is a bit overly oblivious but the comedic tone makes it believable, and this novel is mostly a parody anyways, so his lack of awareness doesn't feel unnecessary or annoying. His character is overall very righteous and kind, and his dealings with the ghost children are all very sweet. The ML also is quite likable, and his sincerity when dealing with MC is very endearing. They have a few cute scenes together in the main story, but I especially loved the first three extras, where we get to see the story from ML's POV:

Spoiler

The fact that this man knew about MC's feelings way before he actually confessed, and even prior to starting anything was already calculating their compatibility based on their birthdays, considering his father's approval of their relationship, scheming ways to make the MC reveal his feelings, and secretly observing MC with stars in his eyes... absolutely brilliant.

[collapse]

Only thing I was a bit disappointed by is that this story only takes you through the details of 3 or so of the ghosts' backstories before basically exorcising the entire class of fierce ghosts all at once. It's an interesting choice as I wonder if the author just got tired of writing or had planned that from the start, as we don't really get to see any of why the other 23 or so children were holding on as fierce ghosts. At the same time, I appreciate how short this novel is so I'm not too upset! <<less

I've sacrificed this masterpiece in one night.

Romance progress between MC and ML is pretty slow but they're already in platonic friendship at early chapters. ML is like a taoist master or something like that and very rich. He's also a green flag and always get surprised by MC because of his positivity. MC yang energy is very abundant to the point all of the ghosts are almost creamated by him.

The author really did great in writing the characters. At first this is a very comedic novel (because of our MC's... more>> shenannigans) but later the students MC teach will graduate (reincarnated/reborn).

The meeting and parting between MC and his students +teachers went so fast I still feel sad but it's happy ending. At the end MC go with ML to teach at his place <<less

What a breath of fresh air. A perfect palate cleanser after something heavy or a bad novel that tries too hard. This one is more of a tongue-in-cheek caricature type of novel that knows what it is and creatively capitalizes on that.

Although it's a comedy, typical ghost stories often include tragedy and heavy topics. These were not handled carelessly for the sake of comedy, they were given the respect they deserve without lingering too much or getting too heavy. This was made possible with the lighthearted touch of an oblivious... more>> but caring and well-meaning protagonist with deep-rooted beliefs and false confidence. A perfect personality combination for maintaining the comedy without it being in poor taste.

It's a charming story with charming characters, every single one of them. Highly recommended. <<less

Very entertaining. Watching the MC deal with fierce ghosts like a true teacher who cares about students was quite amazing.

I disagree with people who say he's dense. The MC is smart just very determined. When he realizes the truth, he is able to cope and adapt very quickly and continue to do his job.

It's hard to do 1st person stories well, but I think this story was very well suited to this form and the author used it very effectively. I will definitely be re-reading this story!

What an incredibly sweet story! And I can't believe I'm saying this about a story that's centered around ghosts!

This story is cute, it's fluffy, it's got incredibly likable characters, alive and otherwise. The romance aspect is very limited, but rewarding.

MC is well intentioned, not overly pedantic, all while righteously upholding his beliefs in the face of constant opposition.

... more>> I'm not a very pro-go/v individual, so I took in Teacher Shen's lessons with a pinch of salt, but the intent behind them was commendable.

The translation is incredible, which is the standard for E. D. <<less

Personal rating :2.5

This novel is a lot of things but overall I decided to drop it mainly because of the MC

The plot idea is 3.5/5

... more>> The Main Character is someone who doesn't believe in the supernatural when he got hired to be a teacher of 25 strange students and lives with 2 strange roommates and finally falls for a strange but handsome guy. Of course, those strange students and roommates are simply ghost while the handsome guy is the exorcist.

Thought there is ghost, it aint a horror story. Simply mild comedy that I love the book for it. The MC disbelieve in supernatural creates for hilarious events but without the interaction of the other ghost it simply became obnoxious. I notice many comments loving the MC but I can't relate.

"What? You’re saying I’ve met a ghost? Impossible! As a staunch scientific materialist, I absolutely don’t believe there’s any such thing as ghosts!"

As the MC said in the summary he is a staunch scientific materialist. And apparently, he has been unknowingly fighting with ghosts for years back. What annoys me is despite the clear distinction of people saying they're dead or when I used to be alive and etc. He views the other as psycho and needing therapy and when he sees anything weird he views it as their odd hobby. Which is fairly insulting to me.

Of course, if it was simply that I would still be able to enjoy the book. But I find the MC to be a self-obsessed, obnoxious person. To explain, because he doesn't believe in ghosts he goes to try to prove to others that science is truth and ghosts are just brainwashed stuff. He's a crush and exorcist. He decided to learn more about him in order to show him science. It sounds very much like how religion occurs. One learning the other to prove how the other's religion is false and that he's is the truth. So already he's acting like the world revolves around him. But the fact that the author makes the story actually revolve by making him OP? Because he a late20s virg*n with who follow the rules of the world and virtues or something. The way he thing his crush is making his move on him and not going to listen to the truth because ghosts are nonsense. Science is the truth.

And to the author. Yes I know he's gay. You dont need to compensate every time he says the girl is a beauty and followed by I'm gay. Or I won't be lusting for the women because im gay. Or because I'm gay I believe I should be a gentleman. Like??? Most straight guys ain't a gentleman. You don't have to compensate for being gay to be a gentleman.. It's cringe.

Seriously tho.. Why is he OP and why is the ghost afraid of him just because he's yang energy is so high because he's a virg*n? There must be a 50 years old virg*n in the world. Let alone tons of 28 years old virg*ns. And for alll of his ' you need to be good, lawful and never sin personality' he really does like to eavesdrop or busy body until before he actually hears good info before saying, its not good to eavesdrop as a lawful, angel. Or something.

Honestly, I love the novel, but yes. The MC really ruin it for me. It has potential. The way he doesn't deny his student because they seem pitiful or something reminds me of a BL manga, about a sensei giving his love to the entire class. And now the whole class is in love with the sensei and he began ****ing them because he can't refuse their love for him. <<less

I liked it very much.

But how often Teacher Sheng mentions Marxism and how patriotic he is, felt slight like brainwashing. It probably is normal because it is China, however it bothered me a little.

The way it was put on the text, Teacher Sheng might as well be the MC because of his beliefs, and putting one belief over others isn't right.

Hmm, how do I start? To be honest I didn't really expect this novel to interest me, I was thinking that maybe in the middle of the story, I might be bored and whatnot so I hesitated and took my time contemplating whether to read this or not. A quick read you can binge in a day that'll make you laugh. I adore this author's style of comedy where the self-assured main character acts as a straight man while he thinks the rest of the world has gone mad. Meanwhile you, the reader, just keep laughing at the misunderstandings he has.

This is at least two books in one. They are both good-just not as fleshed out as I would like them to be. The author does walk the line of what our MC knows is happening and whats actually reality in an entertaining and consistent way. The first book and main story is about MC who is a dedicated first time teacher firm in his beliefs and pragmatic about needing to work hard to live. Thus he takes the only job he can find: working for a strange fly by night school with the strangest bunch of students a teacher could ever encounter. He's dedicated to helping them discover their ethical principles while helping them down the path to recovering from the various "mental traumas" that have made this school their only option.

The second book is about a young exorcist traveling outside of his sect for the first time and encountering a very different world, materially and spiritually, than he had been brought up to expect. He's arrogant in his knowledge and routinely flabbergasted by out MC's ability to survive in the second book while still following the plot of the first book.

Spoiler

Their friendship and eventual romance is sweet. The way they open each other's eyes to possibilities outside the boundaries of their own experience is great.

[collapse]

I do wish the world building, secondary characters, and the arcs dedicated to each student had been more developed.
Spoiler

I really wanted a story for all 26 students. Not just a primary six or seven.

[collapse]
The arcs are more developed than in a lot of other novels I've found on this site. But they are also more compelling so I wanted to spend more time enjoying them.

Spoiler

I do see alot of people who are irritated with how long our main character takes to figure things out. Part of that I think comes from how soon the author invites us into seeing both books vs if they'd let us live in book one with the MC for a while. Admittedly, his responses to the students are not what you'd expect. But that is consistent with the character. He does not do the expected. His outlook on life gives him the ability to believe with hard work the people he wants to help (like his students) can have a better life. That belief does not change. Not even when his understanding of the spiritual world does eventually expand. And thats why he can do what he does for his students and friends.

I do feel a little weird that in hindsight most of what he was doing was unintentionally terrorizing all of the students. At least most of the guys. The girls stories showed they improved because someone they didn't think could be sincere was sincere to them. Says weird things about gender dynamics and the way violence against woman and men is perceived.
[collapse]

I do recommend this if you don't need a character who rationalizes in a way you approve to enjoy a fun, quirky horror comedy romance.
