There is an old rumor about Alyssa Benoit, the Lady of the North.

A lord of a barren, demon-infested land.

A hideous and terrifying monster Duchess, cursed from birth.

Everyone thought so, even Alyssa herself.

Alyssa believed that the man who was forced to marry her would think the same.

Kieran Albrecht, the man who became her husband by the Emperor’s decree.

A beautiful nobleman, a person as different from her as heaven is from earth.

‘He will think I’m dreadful.’

Unable to bear the thought of her husband’s contempt, Alyssa tries to avoid him, but for some reason, Kieran keeps approaching her.

“May I have your hand?”

“I’m not angry. And I won’t be in the future either.”

His eyes devoid of malice, his kind words. Everything about him was unfamiliar to her.

Why are you so kind?

I'm still early in, but this has been a treat so far. I'm enjoying the role reversal here: FL is a strong but reserved duchess of the north while ML is a regressor whose battlefields have been social situations so far. Both have a lot in common in that they lived in terrible environments growing up, although as the title suggests, FL has never received love from anyone and suffers from low self-esteem. I like that she's quick to take action when she feels the need to, but her thought... more>> processes make sense given her life.

ML has prioritized himself so far, understandably so, but he is also kind and respectful to FL, and their slowly building trust gives me a lot of hope for their relationship in the future.

The story seems to be setting up a slow burn and healing love story beneath the pair's activities of trying to maintain and perhaps rebuild the impoverished duchy, and I'm here for it. It's translated smoothly so far, too, so thanks to the translation team! <<less

I don't normally write reviews, particularly when I am only 1/10th of the way through (as that is all that has been translated thus far), but thought I'd chime in since there are no reviews yet.

While it is still early days, I am very much excited to continue this series. I was instantly hooked by a surprise that comes at the end of chapter 2.

Kieran has actually regressed, and this is now his second time living their marriage having originally died about four years later. While the cause of his death is still unknown, it is clear that he was poorly neglected in the first timeline, and felt unable to stand up for himself given his context. This should be a familiar set-up for many who enjoy regression stories, with a gender switch.

Kieran is marrying into Alyssa's duchy, and so far, this has been an enjoyable look at their swapped (traditional) gender roles. Alyssa was raised as "the heir, " which means to say that she was raised to be a traditional Duke (read: man, i.e., make money), not a traditional Duchess (read: female, i.e., take care of the home). Kieran seems free to do whatever he wants in terms of duties, including refusing any, but there is a clear understanding that they both have separately that Kieran can assume the duties and responsibilities traditionally taken on by a duchess if he so chooses. It will feel familiar to those who have read Beware the Villainess! and Age of Arrogance where the main leads do not strictly adhere to traditional gender norms, and so far this seems to add to that theme by showcasing another couple who do so while maintaining their sense of selves and their own gender expressions.

I will say that this may in fact appeal to more conservative readers of the genre than Beware the Villainess! in the sense that so far, aside from their duties, their personalities are quite traditionally female versus male. Alyssa, who can come off cold, is actually incredibly shy, timid, and doubtful of her own capabilities and self-worth. Meanwhile, Kieran is more confident/self-assured

and displays many gentlemanly mannerisms. Personally, I liked Beware the Villainess! because of how it depicted gender fluidity, but that's just my own opinion and I'm looking forward to seeing how this work contributes to the conversation.

I am also curious to see how this story will deal with the inevitable "hero" issue. In most regression rofans, the underlying draw is that it is a female lead who takes the initiative to save herself. In other words, she is not the damsel, but her own hero, utilizing her own wits and talents, whether they be the sword, pen, etc. She may fall in love along the way, but, ideally, her love interest is her partner, not her crutch. Here, though, the male lead is the one who has regressed. Will he be the one doing the saving? If so, then this story becomes one where the male lead saves just another damsel in distress, only by taking on the traditionally female duties instead of the male ones. It takes the progressiveness out of the genre. Of course, there are numerous ways the author can handle this issue, and I'm curious to see how they do so. Hopefully, we see a story that uplifts both leads in support of one another, rather than one that diminishes one for the other to shine.

Highly recommend, and thank you to the translators for your great work so far! Please, please do not drop this! <<less

I adore them. It's one of the rarer times we get the ML regressing and not the fl. Both characters are so well fleshed out that don't think either of them are in the wrong.

The ML is guarding his heart because he was heavily neglected by the FL in their first life. That isn't really her fault either--she's incredibly traumatized and isn't able to look at herself half the time. Being loved or even looked upon kindly is so foreign to her that she takes to avoiding him a lot.... more>> She was so cold to him in the first timeline because she was scared he would find her ugly, a fact that was not really unfounded as he was forced to go to their territory without his consent. She does love him though. It's obvious in the way the author writes about her thinking about him, even if it is a bit unhealthy. The author also does such an amazing job at showing how ab*se messes with a persons head.

Spoiler

At one point our FL gives herself a panic attack because she thinks the ML is upset with her. She even wishes the ML would hit her if not to relieve his anger and treat her normally again, a line of thinking that is pretty common in ab*se victims (after all, wouldn't you do anything for someone to show you warmth when you've only felt pain and cold?)

[collapse]

It's a novel where they both are healing from their traumas and it's done so delicately. I love them both and it is truly an amazing read. <<less
