This is a tragic heart-breaking love story with suspense-thriller vibe in it. Luckily it is a happy ending one.

The author is so brilliant, plot and writing are so well-constructed. The story made me cry many times.

... more>> It made me wanna help both FL and ML and wish for them a happy and peaceful life afterward.

The FL and ML are truely "the other half" of each other.

It raised the topic of scholl bullying, which can be as worse as adult crime. And the problem of how to deal with juvenile offenders. Should they get at light punishment and also a second chance while the victims get the truama for the rest of their lifes? <<less

I just finished reading the story. I just want to say that, I was very wrong to judge the story based on the comments only. I skipped a lot of time when I see this. BUT I WAS WRONG. There is more to it. The story was well written and interesting enough to continue reading... for the r*pe part, I actually thought that maybe the r*pe was too much, reading wise, but it was not really. It actually just inform a bit of what happened that night but not really... more>> described everything.
Spoiler

But it is really need to be told as this is the key or clue where everything changes. Where the important part of the story. How everything went down to their conclusion and solutions

[collapse]
As a whole, I think the story is telling us about unfairness in reality specially about law? How other people did not receive the right treatment or judgement? Which is truthfully happening and happened to a lot of people. Because, FL is smart, ML is also smart and financially super capable... how come they did not think of other ways to fight with these bullies?? Otheres did videos and cant they record or video as well?like? Hello? Even the poloce officer, how come the new one is better than the experienced one? And you go like "why?" "How come? They end up to do bad things. Then u understand that the flow of the story is not just about the tragedy or love story at all but it is about how people in reality, fighting for their rights who got unfair justice getting less confidence to people who should protect them, criminals getting away lightly. But then, from all of this you just look at it with a silver lining. And it all go down with LOVE. Love is so powerful that it really breaks all barrier. Because of love, it helps us to move on and get up again, to be inspire, change and confident again

Thus, this is a good read that you must try. Also, we can categorized this as "genius crime". <<less

This is harsh. Not to read when you’re depressed.

But nevertheless, this novel reminds me of a motto that I keep telling to myself when I feel like I’m about to go down : there’s still hope. No matter how dark and cruel this world is, no matter how much people trample you, there is still hope. As long as you have one person who loves you, you still have hope.

To be honest, when I read it, I expected it to be that dark, so this was tolerable. Moreover, Bei Ye... more>> and Chen Nian’s relationship is just too beautiful to not feel moved by this novel. <<less

Where to begin. I will be writing this based on my perspective. This novel is extremely different than the past things I have read before.

What I got from it, it's about how the system sometimes fails to give justice for young victims. To the point that they would rather rely on one another than with adults. How adults easily turn a blind eye to what is happening for reputation/ not wanting to get involved/ being neglectful. It was about how bullying can cause serious mental and physical damage, and once... more>> again society does nothing to stop it. Not until there is at least one person who wants to make a change.

How in the end there is sometimes no justice for the victim because it was a thing between youths. That the offender shouldn't be severely punished because they don't know any better and they can redeem themselves before they are adults. But then we go to the question, "what about the victim?" Wouldn't it be fair for the offender to be punished for all they did to the victim? Where is the justice for the victim? But the words above hold truths, some youths do redeem themselves, but to redeem oneself comes within. No one but yourself can change. This, I saw, as hypocrisy and selfishness by part of the law and of humans. Because we want justice and fairness at the same time, something that cannot be possible together.

And then the beautiful relationship that comes out of all this. How there is still beauty, kindness, trust, and love in all this darkness. That a relationship with silence says more than enough. Trust was a big part of this novel, the level of trust they had for each other was astronomical. I won't lie, their relationship is something to be jealous about because of their immense trust and reliance in one another. Extremely moving.

It was 31 chapters long, with the last two being epilogues written in letter format. The end, although it wasn't explicit, gave closure

because you knew they ended up together and grew to be better people.

Through all the hardships they went through, their trust and will to protect one another was still there.

In the end, she writes to the police officer that she still believes in truth, in beauty, in kindness, in goodness, and in trust and belief itself. All thanks to her partner, because he showed all that to her.

At the end of the novel I too finally started to understand the quote, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

I extremely recommend this novel, it pulls at your heartstrings, makes you cry but it is worthwhile. Like I said, I have never come across a novel like this before. Not only was it well written, it also pulls you in. I was able to read it all in a day, but I took my time to process and take in everything. I reread some chapters because they were either shocking or touching. The ending, chapter 29, was beautiful. Those last two sentences made me cry so hard. It hit my heart. The ending with the epilogues, everything was bittersweet. I had tears and a small smile in my face when I read the last words. Once again, I recommend this novel. It is now my top favorite and I don't think I will ever find anything like it. <<less
