Initially I dreaded this story would fit into the "thoughten up and become female warrior to win ML's love" trope. Thankfully it wasn't like that at all.

The initial hardships of the MC in the ML's town are mainly to make her into a "trustworthy" figure and earn the good will of the town's people. I like the fact she was pretty realistic in her actions.

Spoiler

She didn't set out to take over the mansion or win over people. That's the typical mindset in novels but this inaction is rather realistic for a girl who's used to keeping her head down. Why to bother when she's so uncertain about this new environment? Might as well stay as it is as long as she's not mistreated. She just helped with things when she was forced to do so by the crisis and her contributions were pretty reasonable too. Eating rations, giving up a place to hide for logical reasons rather than "pure goodness" (not that such would be bad but this is pretty refreshing too. She's good but not a saint. She wants to help people but she's also willing to die because she has nowhere to return), helping with the wounded and washing, etc.

[collapse]

I also liked the ML, they are a good match. He's a powerful general but he's very tender with his family. He's doting yet he's also an strategist so he knows when to allow his loved ones to take risks. He spends a lot of time with MC not only pampering her (which he does a lot, it's pretty sweet) but also talking with her and discussing the political situation and his own thoughts, he truly considers her his partner and lifemate in everything so he always offers her the option to get involved. He seemed too good to be true at times, especially for a man of his time and culture
Spoiler

However, it isn't that strange considering his background. He's so doting with MC because apart from his younger brother *cough* he's alone in the world. He's the youngest of a big family that was exterminated so it makes sense he'd value MC so much. Also, he has an unusual outlook about marriage and child raising because monogamy was a tradition of the Chu family. His family also has an special origin and a lot of secrets passed down so of course he'd seek intimacy in his relationship.

[collapse]
. I also liked he didn't fall in love with MC because she was "different" or "badass" or whatever. The reason isn't too clear but he was predisposed to value his wife as a partner (after they confirmed she wasn't some kind of spy), he probably enjoyed her blunt and honest personality and well, he did say it was fate and he knew she was his "one" when he first saw her.

The MC is an easygoing character. She just wants to live well and for her loved ones to be well. She's used to adapting for survival but she's pretty sincere too. I mean, she did direct her efforts to please people and rely on their protection but she also acted because of sincere regard. I liked the relaltionship with Princess Rui and her oldest sister too. They all understood each other and their priorities but they were also sincerely fond of each other and did their best to help when they could. She's pretty lazy and a foodie but that's fine by me. She got lucky with her husband and she knows it. It's a credit to both that they can be great partners and trust each other as they do. She's not the smartest but she's insightful so her unusually simple methods to analize or respond to problems are pretty effective.

I think the social dynamics are pretty good, they feel real as each character has their own outlook and motives, hidden or not. They don't feel flat at all. No "blind jealousy", "persistent shrew" or "single-minded fool" for the best part. The least developed characters are probably the sisters (2nd, 4th and 5th), however I suppose their ages can account for their foolishness. Even the Ruyang princess, the queen mother and the traitor general weren't bad people even if they were enemies at some points, they simply had their own interests. The MC understands that so I was pleased to notice there's not much "face-slapping" moments. This is an story where the characters that offended MC actually can survive as long as they don't keep foolishly attacking after being defeated. She doesn't bother with punishing people. <<less

I can read Chinese so I read the original Chinese version and it's nothing like the drama (which I dropped after a few episodes because of how the romance was explored) - once again, C-dramas ruining perfectly good books that have sweet, simple romance. Why must C-dramas always be ruining a lot of these good romance novels!

Well, aside from that, it's a pretty straight-forward book with some political intrigue, but nothing too angsty and it's more slice-of-life but I think there's more politics involved later on, which can become tiring,... more>> but I don't think it was too much that you couldn't read through it. If you want to have a nice feel-good read through without too much angst and sweet, simple romance, then this is good. It's short too. I'm the type to not read any book - even if the plot is great - if the romance is horrible (such as petty misunderstandings that last forever, domineering characters that are more toxic than cute etc. This one has sweet romance). I just can't bear the story if the romance is bad, and I don't need more angst in my life HAHA

It's been a while since I've read it, but the fact I finished it means it met the above criteria. Also, if I remember correctly, the female doesn't necessarily become stronger in terms of fighting and physical strength etc, but it shows how she can be strong in her own way by being who she is. I mean, whoever said females must be physically strong and be able to fight to be considered strong? I don't think that's right and I think it doesn't recognise all the 'stereotypical' housewives out there who are fighting in their own ways. Of course, I've got nothing against females who can fight physically either, and in fact, love them (once again, as long as the romance if written well and she's ACTUALLY strong and not just the author saying she's strong).

Overall, I enjoyed it. It's not entirely perfect, and won't be everyone's cup of tea, particularly those who want to read more serious novels because this is meant to be cute, most of all, though there is a bit more political intrigue towards the end which can be weary. <<less

AN EASY 100/100

MY GOD! I got impatient and went ahead to read the MTL... but that doesn't do any justice to the book. I WILL DEFINITELY READ AGAIN AFTER OUR AMAZING TRANSLATOR FINISHES THE WORK!

I LOVE THE BOOK SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SOOOOOOOO MUCHH XD

im on a chinese historical book marathon and gotta say this climbed up the rankings pretty fast!! 5 chapters in I was hooked and screaming... I had the adrenaline rush when our ML and MC saw each other for the first time!!!!! I... more>> mean the build up to that point and then dropping the bomb omg it was so amazing!!LET ME SPOIL A BIT AHHHHHHHHH FOR ME IT WAS THE BEST MOMENT IN THE WHOLE BOOK!! A MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD I just cant control my excitement!!!!

Spoiler

our MC was sent to the war front as the general's bride. by the time she got there the general was already out there fighting. The bro of the ML was in the mansion and they all think that MC is a spy from the court so they monitor our MC. AND OUR AWESOME MC QUICKLY ADAPTS... and then a sneak attack come from the enemy side and OUR MC HAD TO STAND WITH THE WHOLE TOWN TO protect each other... IT WAS SO GOOD! she wasnt op or anything it felt very humane... and the best part is MC heard rumors and thinks that the general is close to being a savage, eating raw meat and all ahhaha and she gets to experience the war first handedly so doesnt care if her husband is like that as long as he defeats the enemy and win! (I LOVE HER ABOUT THAT) AND THEN THE GENERAL COMES TO THE SCENE AHHH *fangirl screaming* I noticed that "the general will come for us" was repeated again and again and that was an amazing feeling when he finally came... then comes the best moment... it was four days after the general defeated the enemy and our MC was squatting down by the well to wash cotton to tend to the wounded (note that she was a noble lady from the capital) and she sees a huge man with a full beard wearing worn out armor coming to the well and our MC thinks that he was just a soldier but then every one else calls the man general and kneels AND OUR MCs brain literally fries and thinks that the general looks good and better than those rumors hahahahahaha and ML thinks that the MC was like a little ball crouching down and he holds her in his hands and thats how their journey began...I IMAGINED THIS SCENE SO VIVIDELY YOU KNOW WITH SLOW MOTION AND BACKGROUND MUSIC!! hahahahahah THE BEST AND I LOVE IT

[collapse]
LOVE THEIR CHARACTER DYNAMICS!!

AND I JUST HAVE TO PRAISE OUR MC FOR BEING SO STRAIGHTFORWARD!!

she is a very sensible woman and she only knows practical straightforward solutions for any problem. It was a pleasant surprise to read such an MC... she becomes a sticky lazy and cute puddle in front of our ML and when he is not around she carries the whole drama on her shoulders...i wanna ask from our MC----"did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" *shying away* ML IS SUCH A LUCKY PERSON TO BE LOVED LIKE THAT

AND ALSO I KNEW THE MOMENT
Spoiler

he buys a puppy for the MC... HE WAS IN IT FOR LIFE!!!!!

[collapse]

I HAVE SO MUCH TO TALK I DONT KNOW WHERE TO START OR WHERE TO END hahaha if I start I would definitely spoil the ending so will restrain my self XD

reading this book felt like watching a drama!! IN FACT THERE IS ACTUALLY A TV DRAMA and it is such a failure compared to the book... IT WAS NOTHING LIKE THE BOOK!

and the MVPs of the book were MCs mom, rui wangfei and zhao momo! THEY ARE THE MOST AMAZING FEMALE CHARACTERS!! MC was guided by them and zhao momo literally thinks that our MC is a cute lil bunny and our ML is a huge leopard... those animal metaphors were scattered everywhere hahahahah!!

and I love every other character too!!!!!!!

*crying* I will wait for the book to be fully translated even though I MTLed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GUYS PLEASE GIVE IT A TRY!! DONT MISS IT <<less

This is an easy read. It has an interesting harem dynamics that appears for a third of the novel and a very sweet romantic relationship, bear in mind the age pf the female lead wouldn't be appropiate nowadays. I loved it mostly because of the sassiness of the female lead, her sensible character and her ability to adapt to new situations. The political intrigue is quite funny, part of it will finally get less confusing now somebody is actually translating it.

This is NOTHING like the drama, by the way. That... more>> production barely had the name of the main characters in common with this novel. Such a waste for a nice, simple, IP. <<less

Nice story, very easy to MTL. I like how the story went and I’m planning to reread this when the actual English translation is finished.

What I liked the most about this novel is the story progression. The people and the setting are continuously moving/progressing so it doesn’t feel dragging when reading. It starts of as a conflict in the “inner room” to an all out political drama.

If there’s one thing I didn’t like is that the authors should have switched the order of the last 2 extra chapters in the... more>> end.

Lastly, if I could, I would like a male Wangfei Rui as a husband please and thank you. <<less

review up to chapter 60

-the description is really deceiving! you'd think that it's just a lighthearted rea but nope it's definitely not!!!

In fact, the first 30 chapters or so were truly on the more slice of life side where we see the couple cultivating feelings and adapt esp MC. however once they head back to the capital the schemes start, I'm not deep into the schemes yet but it seems like things are going on behind the scenes (big things) but for now its just small actions... tbh I really... more>> like a lot of the characters however I'm also quite dissatisfied with some tiny things in the novel-also a bit confusing.

-the mc's family are all royalty because the dad is Rui Wang aka the emperor's biological brother. All children are legit princes and princesses but it doesn't seem like that when the author describes the family or other related things. I mean I've read other historical novels and I've seen how the backyard matters work and I've also seen the attitude people should hold but... these women don't give out the feeling of royalty nor does their status seem special when interacting with others. in most novels, there are a lot of banquets etc but it seems like there are none in this novel, I actually love banquets n all but I don't necessarily need them it's just these characters seem to have no friends or no life... it makes it seem too 2D... err how to put it? uhh idk lacks soul maybe?

-characters... huh talking about characters my favourite character as of now is probably Rui WangFei aka the legitimate wife of the Mc's dad. She really is a smart and capable woman no doubt. Especially in that kind of era... No doubt if the MC's core was carved by her biological mother then Ruiwangfei is who polished her and sharpened her claws.

the MC to me is truly a puzzle. there are times I really can't see through her making me wonder if she's really so smart or was it a fluke? the ML is a doting husband, he pampers her and spoils her rotten! I really like their moments of flirting and how MC won't shy away //>o<//

ill add more once I've read more chapters. so far I truly recommend this!

edit:

after completing the novel I must say mtl gets a bit boring lol... or maybe it's just that I wasn't in the mood? IDK but reading the middle part of the novel was taxing. I enjoyed it but the moods throughout are very different.

I really love the interactions of the MC ML and their kid. it's so cute!!!

in fact, my absolute fav part in the novel was grandma Zhao's description of the MC as a rabbit and the ML a leopard and how she could imagine the little rabbit running and hopping around the leopard and just little scenes like those! tbh I'd read a whole book about just that lol.

my final rating of this would be a 3-3.5...I think I might enjoy the drama more? <<less

2.5/5

This one didn't sit right with me. It started with me liking the fl, but after awhile it just got annoying. 'Go with the flow' attitude in situations like when she first got married is good. But when it's basically the WHOLE time, it's not interesting anymore. She does nothing but act spoiled and like a child. I couldn't even finish because of it. No passion, no drive, no real intrest except eating and getting spoiled by ML like he's her father. It kinda grossed me out after awhile. It... more>> didn't seem like a relationship with a partner, more like a daughter-father relationship. This treating adult women as infants is disgusting in my opinion. She acting like one and he then treating her as one, I really don't get why authors find these kind of relationships attractive enough to write it like that.

Another thing that annoyed me is; she's basically the kind of female protagonist that doesn't do anything but still gets love and admiration. Female lead halo is big with this one. Even if she has a "lovable" personality and appearance, the amount of love people had for her just because of it irritated me. I respected her in the beginning, but since the crisis right after getting married passed, she didn't do anything to warrant respect. The opposite even: respect dropped each chapter more and more.

I don't need a female MC if she just depends on the male lead and doesn't really contribute anymore the moment he loves her. Why be a MC at all if their only purpose is to get "pampered" and "spoiled ". (Or at least only at the end) Honestly, it's not even funny how much I see this happening. Just make the male lead the MC then.

It just makes me realize the deep-rooted belief of a woman's worth is dependent on the man she can get. That in itself is an accomplishment it seems. It's saddening to see this happen so often and ironically, most of the time written by women themselves. <<less

I actually liked the MC and the plot quite a lot during the early chapters. She is strong but not to the extent that it was unbelieveable like most of other protagonists. After all, she's just a pampered young girl. However, after about forty chapters or I started getting really irritated with her. The novel pictured her as a smart but naive woman, and I could see that sometimes but most of the time, I couldnt see it. Also, her acting spoiled is cute but after reading about it for... more>> every chapter, it just becomes annoying.

The ML is okay but I was uncomfortable with him telling the MC to grow up faster (?). Like what the hell ? Moreover, I also found it to be kinda creepy that the ML calls the MC as his 'little' wife. I don't know but that just made me uncomfortable.

I also found it to be quite boring towards the end as it uses the same formula as most of other chinese novels I've read but its still readable.

Probably the only reason I stayed was because of Rui-Wangfei.

Overall, not really my favourite but it's a nice story.

I must say, it’s been a while since I’ve read a good novel like this one.

this novel is very well written, the timing, the reasoning and so on, I the description doesn’t do much justice tho (lol).

Anyways back to the story, I really like this the drama it is well balanced with the plot it’s not excessive like other historical novels translated here in Novelupdates. Shen Jin is not OP nor his husband is or everyone else in the story they have limits on their which makes the story more... more>> readable.

The author doesn’t want you to think that “oh this character is so evil I want to kill her blah blah” in your mind instead you will know what causes them to take those actions.

Overall I definitely recommend this novel 5/5. <<less

An early review- it's a very slice of life story so far, mainly focused on MC's eating & sleeping habits, with the 'Big Bad' General easily accepting and pampering his silly wife... Very little drama or political intrigue, especially after MC's marriage. May be some nuances are not very clear in MTL...

I tried to preserve, but I just couldn't. The FL just feels too s*upid to me the minute she marries ML. Before marriage, she seemed okay, despite being compared to a squirrel when eating. But later, the emphasis on that just became too much and she was just becoming too pampered and spoiled. I get that it's a "fool with a fool's luck", but it just doesn't sit right with me. This is actually pretty good. It is not your typical romance/battle for the throne. The plot was well -developed and the characters were very interesting. If you liked Legend of the Concubine's Daughter Minglan, you will like this novel.

It's made up of three parts. 1) MC's childhood, 2) Marriage and Romance (which was all too short, IMHO), 3) Fight for the throne.

Some of the best parts are the MC's interactions with her family. That includes the wangfei, the head wife and the MC's dad. For once, we have a Wangfei... more>> that is a sympathetic character. She's actually my hero! Smart, cunning, brave, kind, and fair. She treats everyone, including the concubines' children, fairly. The dad, the wangye, is cowardly and ineffectual. But he's had to make himself as nonthreatening as possible, in order to survive. His Emperor brother has killed all their other siblings, you see. Read this for the family drama! You won't be sorry. Of course, since the MC's uncle is the emperor that adds an extra dimension to it.

The MC marries very young. It isn't consummated until years later, but if you cling onto your modern sensibilities you will be shocked. Bear in mind that this was a time when people became grandparents in their thirties. Men like the MC led armies when they were 13. Women married young and lost their vcard when they got their period. If you read Game of Thrones, you will know what I mean.

It's a fairly quick read. The MTL was okay. <<less

Liked the story! The romance part is taken care near the middle of the story and then afterwards it’s mostly political. There are sections that felt like fillers because a lot of words were used to describe the situation/event or things/people that seemed irrelevant to me. Apart that, it’s pretty entertaining and there are some funny moments. The female lead is smart but not very sharp. I feel she is a easy going and quite lazy person in general, she doesn’t scheme much and she also doesn’t fight much but... more>> when she does she goes for the win. Most of the time she practices avoidance because of how she was raised. This change a little bit after she marries the general and gain a position. I loved princess Rui, her di (official) mother (FL is concubine-born) better because she is a very smart, sharp person, quite good at calculating and scheming but with a bottom line and integrity. And contrarily to a lot of cliche treats FL quite well. Not as good as her di children but not far behind. The ML is cliche, reliable, faithful, devoted, smart general, super good looking, nothing much to say. I think I would have loved to read a novel about princess Rui, just it would have probably been a tragedy since she ended marrying such a muddled-head, licentious and weak husband. <<less

I liked the story a lot. The couple complement each other a lot. The ' you are not perfect but perfect for me' kind.

A major part of the novel is spent on political intrigue which isn't too boring. Also it's not too heavy. All issues are dealt with swiftly.

The romance is nice but few. They could add a bit more scenes.

I liked how ML didn't just fall for MC for any random reason but genuinely appreciate her efforts and bravery in helping him during extreme times even before they met.... more>> It's also nice to see a not an abusive ML who will hate MC just because she was married by his enemy. <<less

Which is a good and fresh thing in this troupe. Though since it's a drama genre and quite fluffy, some things are silly. But all in all the story and world building is quite whole. The struggle for the throne is as intense as it can get.

The MC is very cute, I also love Rui Wangfei, she's such an excellent woman, pity she was married to Rui Wang. Rui Wangfei's eldest daughter was quite good at the beginning but I guess of all the daughter of Rui Wang only MC has a good end.

ML is your typical sweet overbearing general type. Not to say he's bad, at least he's not the kind of character that forged ahead without listening to MC's wish.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this article. <<less

3.5 stars. I liked the FL quite a lot, and enjoyed the romance bits with the ML, but this is mostly a political drama vs. a romance. I got a little fatigued towards the end, and had to force myself to finish it. It's still a well done novel, I just wanted a bit more romance. The OTP spent literal years separated from each other and then every time they got back together she popped out another kid... lol.
