Lee Jung-woo, once an ordinary young man from South Korea, awakens in the body of Rohan Arcadia, a prodigious mage and the last heir of a fallen noble family. As the education officer of the Imperial Mage Corps, he shaped the greatest mages, guiding the Saintess, the Imperial Princess, and even his former fiancée. But desiring peace, he resigns and opens a small restaurant near a dungeon. Yet, those he left behind—powerful figures of the empire—refuse to let him go. Begging for his return, not as a mage, but as a chef, they upend their pride for just one more meal.

I'm probably not the intended reader for that story but I still find it strange... I mean, yeah, I'm not the kind of person who likes to read endlessly about food and cooking in a novel, but, at least, when it's about actual food and cooking, I can tell myself that I might learn something useful... But what about this story? More than half of each chapter is about ingredients, food and cooking... monster meat in a magic-packed fantasy world! So it's just about fantasy ingredients, fantasy cooking and fantasy... more>> dishes... What's the point, really? I don't get it.

For now I'll stick around for the characters... I'm just curious about how and when the three above mentioned women will stay with the MC, since it seems logically impossible considering their positions. I do hope it will lead to future developments that are not all about cooking.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not even saying the characters have been good so far. Aside from the fiancée (she's not good but she has issues), the two other women are really tr*shy; and the only reason the MC doesn't hate them is because... his other students were way worse! I mean, with the kind of experience he had teaching them, it's a wonder he stayed sane. The MC himself is quite ambiguous: wants to return, doesn't care about anything else, but thinks he can't, then wants to cook, but still can't let go of the idea of returning home, but still it's hopeless, no? let's believe I'll find a clue, but let's not look for it at all, etc. He wants to return to his original world so much that his journey through monster cuisine (or even potential future romance developments) feels empty to me. What's the point? You're not that passionate if going back to your original world (with no monster - or the people you might fall for - in sight) is what you want to do.

    Spoiler

Just to give an idea of how 'profound' the MC is: After trying everything he finds out that he would need the power of three dragons' hearts to maybe get back home. But dragons have gone (supposedly) extinct (he just makes no effort looking for them) so... F*ck! let's give up. (This scholar doesn't stop to think even for a minute that, maybe, just maybe, it could be a kind of unit of measurement for power.) Then, a short while later, he suddenly gets his hands (oh so very easily) on a dragon's egg. He says that those eggs don't spoil and that it should be possible to hatch it. So, naive as you are, you would think the guy would try to hatch it and then go on his merry way to find other eggs... Yeah, he does think about it but, still, no, two seconds later the plan is to eat it. Why? No explanation. But he hesitates because he doesn't know how to cook it and it would be a waste to mess up here since it's a legendary ingredient. So, you would naively think he will take his time to research (he's a cook, a scholar and the egg won't spoil)... but, no let's make a boiled egg! And then... (we didn't see that coming...) the egg hatches. Still being the naive reader that you are, you would think he would get excited, as a scholar and as someone needing three dragons' hearts to go back home... but no, how naive! I just wanted a boiled egg why do I get a dragon!

    [collapse]

Also, it's like everyone in the world is a gourmet, understanding instantly his cooking and begging and kneeling down after one bite... This is seriously s*upid, especially considering how much easier it is for people to appreciate junk food than actual gourmet food (even more so in a context where sugar, spices and salt are not your everyday life commodities).

At this point, it's so very average, that my expectations are faint... but we're just 20 chapters in... so I'll wait some more. <<less
