At the age of 15, Heewon awakened as an S-rank Hunter and, along with this awakening, had a long and unsettling dream.

Not only did he become a terrible villain aiming for the destruction of humanity, but he also received a trait that proved everything was not just a simple dream.

[Villain’s Qualities (EX): Destined to be a villain who will destroy this world. Becomes more susceptible to evil influences. All stats double when committing evil acts. However, if one resists their fate, misfortune will occur to steer them back on their original path.]

Afterward, Heewon became a symbol of misfortune, constantly accompanied by bad luck. This was no exception even after joining a small and cute company.

“Heewon, do you really need to be locked up to get your act together?”

“Well, try if you can.”

“Seriously, I should just break one of your legs to keep you from wandering around.”

“I’ll just wander around on one leg, then.”

“I really can’t deal with this…”

Repeated misfortune with his oblivious crush, Gunho.

Will Heewon be able to overcome this and live a normal life as an ordinary citizen?

I've read this in a sitting for 2 days and have reached the end lol, it was a fun read.

The story has some action and is based on the Hunter type world (no guides) which can make it captivating and fun but the main highlight of the story is the character interactions and action. Keep in mind the story's exposition seems to about you already having an understanding of Hunter type stories (etc., dungeon breaks, hunter ranks, guilds/sects).

MC is Seo Heewon an S-rank hunter that is living in as a... more>> office worker rather then a hunter, but his luck is bad so he always gets into misfortune pretty frequently with dungeon breaks, cult sects and other hunters but he is a competent and manages to hide his abilities proficiently, though his misfortune affects those around him making him somewhat of a loner (though he is cordial and nice to others just not explicitly close). Character wise he is kinda fun, his interactions with Gunho (ML) especially I feel like they kinda have an old married couple vibe. He considers his adoptive father and the ML to be the most important figures in his life. I find him to be quite endearing and the way his backstory and childhood find him even more endearing.

Spoiler

MC in previous timelines was tortured and experimented on since childhood, no form of support or help from anyone, and was essentially set up to become a villain that aimed for world destruction with a hate for humanity. He was previously kinda of a sociopath compared to how he is now where he is compassionate, kind, naive and loves humanity. The main difference being that he has his uncle/adopted father and the ML.

I really liked how the MC responded to fully remembering the past memories because his convictions as a normal person neither distorted or changed and he was disgusted with who he was previously, and struggles to grapple with it. He essentially is dealing with the cult appraising him as a God which often leads to drama between him and them as he previously colluded and led them.

[collapse]

ML is Gunho an S-rank hunter that owns a guild and is incredibly obsessed with the MC placing trackers, and following him or having his subordinates do so on a daily basis, often with the goal of ensuring his safety and preventing harm. He is often quite shameless in his approach and methods of tracking the MC down and often argues with the MC when he gets into situations or acts in a way he does not like. It does make sense though...

Spoiler

This obsession stems from the MC's past as a villain. Gunho is a regressor who tried multiple times to prevent the MC's goal of world destruction failing each time for a varying circumstance. In the current timeline Gunho and the MC live in he personally ensures that the MC won't become a villain, often by saving the MC's adoptive father that cares for him, and ensuring the MC is not alone as his villain trait leads to the misfortune of others close to him so he won't become a villain.

And Gunho succeeds but there is angst when MC discovers the ML's motivations for approaching him upon remembering. I understand both sides really ML wanted to prevent world destruction and the MC understands that but is evidently hurt at realising Gunho had a purpose and motivation for approaching him, and they did NOT get along when MC was a villain with them killing each other.

[collapse]

It's not really a spoiler as the other characters make it clear that they are endgame, there is technically an 2nd ML that does clash with Gunho and he does have quite the personality though he also refers to the ML as the MC's boyfriend (albeit teasingly), but...

Spoiler

the romantic moments just aren't there or at least the MC ain't feeling it cos he has a crush on the ML, MC does not shy away from it really but is trying to get over it, ML is unaware and tries to set him up with women and later men.

The male lead could be 2 people technically Lee Joohyun (a character the ML tries to actually set him up with lol) who's an actually nice guy, his crush on the MC is obvious and quite cute. He does kind of get things rolling between the MC and ML.

Though I'd say the actual 2nd ML Kwon Soohyuk who is one that does tend to clash and attempts to make moves with to the MC though it doesn't really go anywhere, kind of f*ckboi vibes does blackmail the MC into navigating the cult sect as they are constantly targeting and kidnapping him.

[collapse]

Otherwise other characters are fine (I like the MC's adoptive father he brings a familial love to both the MC and ML), I find the MC and ML to be the most multi-faceted. MC is not trying to be a 'normal' person as much as that is what he is, he is a resistant to mu*dering other humans because he was raised without the pressure to become a hunter, though he understands there are individuals that deserve to die either from what they have done to him or others. Likewise ML's dynamic or motivations towards the MC are nuanced evidently with the POVs of Gunho that are provided.

Spoiler

MC values are challenged with his desire to take revenge and kill from cult members placing his adoptive father in jeopardy, meeting individuals that were involved in his childhood trauma from experimentation and torture, and just bad people doing awful things but his current values allows him to persevere and avoid that line of becoming the villain and it's nice to see, he acknowledges who he was in the past with disgrace but also acknowledges that his current values won't allow him to revert back to a villain and its not always from determination or confidence but stemming from fear and anxiety due to having a simple upbringing as a normal individual then a hunter.

[collapse]

I think its a fun read the plot does itself well to carry itself and the romance is a nice touch, but I wouldn't expect fluffy romantic moments between the MC and ML, angst is there its very much linked to the interesting plot and they care for one another. I will say as of the ch123 the ending does feel it could use more content or explanation for some plot points, but usually side stories in Korean novels like this are provided to give that additional context. <<less

So... I like the concept usually. No matter how many times it is redone but I was unable to have fun due to the writing.

It almost entirely consists of dialogue. It reads a bit like a script ? I think it could go for an adaption as webtoon but in terms of writing it's substandard (And I mean webnovel works of same premise)

About ml...

Spoiler

ML is obsessive and overprotective to MC (he put location tracker on MC and messaged him every minutes asking where he is etc💀), but I kinda get him... MC is just too--- 😭😭 like if you take your eyes off him, suddenly there will dungeon break in his way to work, suddenly he got kidnapped, suddenly became a hostage, suddenly got involved in a cult, etc etc... it's kind of understandable...

But don't worry MC is strong guys!!! Strong MC wowww!!😱 He's a S-class too!! 🤩🤩 He hide his power, but if it comes to be really dangerous, he doesn't hesitate to use it (secretly, of course)

ML likes to nagging a lot 💀and before he realizing his feelings, it seems like he looks at MC as his own kid lmao... like.. the kind of kid that often got to trouble 💀 and like... I can imagine this scene where he prepare food for MC with the 'you grow up well' ahh kind of smile or 'I raised you well' ahh kind of smile 😭😭😭 like, , his motherly vibes 😭😭🤌🤌

[collapse]

Spoiler

About ML in previous timeline... I mean I kinda get him 💀 he just want to prevent world destruction... 💀💀 and I get why MC felt betrayed too💀

ML regressed back to one year earlier, and then two years earlier, three years, four years and so on. At some point, he got regressed when MC is 12 y.o., where none of mc's tragedies happened yet... he took advantage of that to get close to MC.... which is.. current timeline

Although at first his intentions were to prevent world destruction..., as the time goes on, he got to loves MC and really wish for his happiness🥹🥹🥹

This is a really good romance / adventure story set in a dungeon gate universe. The main character's gimmick is that he's a very powerful telekenetic, but is "fated to become a villain" so bad things are constantly happening to him and those around him. So he's basically running around at half strength trying to seem normal while he keeps getting kidnapped or involved in dungeon breaks. Shocker! The ML Gunho is a regressor (this is not particularly hidden), and he's fervently trying to change MC's future to prevent the... more>> end of the world from repeating.

The romance is a very slow burn. It kinda goes back and forth between looking like it won't be slow burn and then nothing happens (MC is in love with ML from day one, but not the other way around, so he just kinda doesn't act on it), but the characters and plot are well written and very coherent. Most importantly, while the ML is sort of the hyper controlling stereotype, there's a very obvious reason for it and they've been together since they were 12 so it's not infuriating and creepy. ML then very slowly realizes he's also in love with MC, but when I say slowly I mean past ch 50.

I think it's a good read regardless of the romance, just because the plot is good. We've got mysteries to uncover, visions of the future, strange skills, and well written, generally multifaceted characters. It's very obvious pretty early on that MC is one important person dying away from going apesh*t and trying to end the world, and he's vaguely aware of it too, so the stakes are maintained despite the main couple being overpowered by default. Our MC is a little bit emotionally turbulent but also clearly psychopathic: doesn't want to hurt those he's close to and doesn't want to kill people because of his skill list, but is otherwise extremely blasé about the death or torture of other people or monsters. It's a good read with a good translation (minus a couple mixed up pronouns). <<less

So the part that actually got me hooked is the writing style. It's from Mc's perspective, and totally captivating the actions and unexpectedly unhinged (?) Idk how to describe it.

I'd say it's similar to the webtoon Hybrid.

And I like it. C:

    • About MC and ML - their relationship does have a story... and you can see that ML is desparate - because of their past, and I don't think he's fallen in love yet at least in this point in the story...
      Spoiler

I think he has just tried to use his body, faced with Ml's feelings and with the duty to make him happy - hence so he won't end up a villain again. Maybe he'll take interest after it happened, or smth, but it will be defenetly a slowburn from his part.

      [collapse]
Yes, he gives "mixed" signals if you're not considering that all of his obsession
Spoiler

is due to the past. It's not (yet) romantic but still a decent enough reason for MC to fall

[collapse]

So... in conclusion this has pretty layered characters (at least the main ones) and the action-kind of writing style just sips you in.

Pretty solidly worths the read ^^
