Born as the daughter of the emperor and empress, Ernesta was abandoned due to the tradition of abhorring twins. She was raised in the common people’s area until one day, a messenger from the emperor came to visit her.

“The emperor orders you to marry the Werewolf King Ivan in place of your runaway sister.”

Initially, she refused the selfish imperial decree, but eventually accepted it on the condition that the illness of her foster mother would be cured.

However, when she nervously became Ivan’s wife, her super handsome husband did not do anything particularly frightening, and the werewolves around her were all good people.

Her brightness and resilience, cultivated in the common people’s area, came in handy, and she gradually became close to them despite the initial barrier.

Eventually, she became the beloved queen by those around her, but Ernesta was aware of her temporary position as a substitute.

Since her position would end if elder twin sister were to be brought back, she didn’t want to take advantage of their kindness.

Nevertheless, she couldn’t help but feel that the distance between her and the Werewolf King has been getting closer lately…?

Calling this predictable would be incredibly, you can probably write the plot outline just from the title. Now with this kind of story a certain amount of predictability is to be expected, but it needs to be redeemed by something in the story, great character development, redemption, revenge, a compelling romance, or at least interesting politics. This had nothing.

The bulk of the story is told from Ernesta's POV and she is bland like rice without salt. Revenge is non existent, redemption where it's accomplished is difficult to believe and accomplished... more>> in under a paragraph. Even the prose is uninteresting.

Bottom Line, I felt I could feed the title to CHATGPT and get a better story out. <<less

I had to give this novel a written review since there is only one other and it wasn’t their taste.

I really enjoyed this story to the point where I wouldn’t hesitate to read anything else the author writes. Yes, it is a similar concept to other Japanese fantasy stories. “Unappreciated princess” gets sent to foreign country in place of more appreciated sister to marry a “barbarian”. Where this story strayed was in Ernesta/Ellie, she’s not unappreciated (at least not by anyone relevant to her) and she doesn’t consider herself a... more>> princess. In Ellie’s country, it’s considered unacceptable when twins are born, so one is always killed. However, the queen’s tutor gets permission to raise one of the babies instead. She grows up a very loved commoner completely aware of her origins but also never thinks of herself as a princess or anyone but her adopted parents as her own. Due to being aware from a young age of all her parents have done for her despite not being her “real” parents (her words), Ellie develops something of an inability to ask for help and always avoids being a burden to her loved ones. She is a very well developed character but I find a lot of people see characters that have quiet strength rather than yelling and swinging swords and think they are boring or weak. I really appreciated that Ellie would do anything for the people she loved and always tried her best.

Another positive of this novel was the beautiful writing particularly the imagery. The translator should be proud because it’s rare that subtle details like that get conveyed in translation. The reoccurring conversations about stars was especially pleasing to read.

I would have loved more extras of their married life and potentially any children they would have had. This was a very cute couple with a healthy, respectful relationship.

Definitely recommend giving this a chance if you like resilient heroines and fantasy worlds. <<less
