good background. Good starter, poor execution progress.

also kinda annoyed by MC`s thirst to proof himself by bets, n theres cannon fodders dumb enough to accept it no matter how s*upid the bets sound. (Resign vs jail, eat ashes vs eat ashtray, etc).

Well I dont know whats up with such low rating? Even agt and mga have better rating. I mean this novel is so much better than them but it is getting such low rating. All these people just look at the picture and rate the novel probably. Honestly read it if you like detective + paranormal it sucks you in pretty quickly and is fairly good up to this point.

This novel suffers from extremely poor execution. The plot is decent enough to be interesting, the ideas that revolve around the plot such as the mu*ders and ways to solve them are pretty fresh but that's where all the good things end.

Storytelling is pretty junk, it feels like either something got messed up during translation or author is trying way too hard to appear "classy" or something. The way it reads is like an TV show about old person in his deathbed telling his life story one final time- it's... more>> weird and off putting. This causes the perspective to be skewered in a web novel.. Idk maybe it would work if it was an actual hardcover book with more work put into it.

The biggest issue however is the execution of the plot as I wrote earlier. All interactions and human beings are incredibly "in-human" or robotic/staged.. I don't quite know how to put this better. What I mean is that everybody in the book makes choices and do things that normal human beings just would not do. This is done to execute the plot and often to me looks like compensating for actual writing skills. Let me give you an example from one of the first chapters here:

Guy is found dead hanging on a tree. Police and a coroner are on scene examining it and the body. Coroner says its a su*cide to which our brave main character inwardly disagrees. He then proceeds to waltz over and makes a bet with the coroner that its a mu*der and he can prove it?

How is that anywhere near how things would go in real life? And don't give me that "its a fantasy" -crap. Even in fantasies human beings act certain way. But here? Everybody just shakes hands and takes the bet then proceeding to let an unknown kid solve the supposed mu*der? This is not how life works. In real life the kid would get thrown off the scene and if he still insisted maybe the cops would rough him up a little and let him spend a day in jail.

All emotions and actions in this book are so fake and irksome that they reminds me of uncanny valley in written form. I would even go as far as to say that there's no way for me to relate into these characters because they're completely bizarre and simply do not "live" in the bookworld- They only follow certain set actions as set by the author.

There are so many logical fallacies too in this book. It's like most of the things in this book bend and lose their 'touch of humanity' (for the lack of better expression) in order to force this plot that the author decided he would have on his book. I mean the author could of just wrote differently and incorporate everything smoothly into the plot but no he would instead bend the way the world exists and force his crappy ideas into the book. It feels like I'm being force fed manure and I obviously f*cking hate it.

Anyway what a rant this turned out to be. I guess I'm just so disappointed and weirded out. Only read this if you're desperate and there's absolutely nothing else. <<less

This novel is shit. Why?? MC has his skills but the development of the novel goes completely wrong. No character progression. Many people who will read this bcz of probably these 2 reasons.
First, it is on wuxiaworld. com so it should be something above average but hell no, it is the most tr*shiest novel on the site.
Second, the way of a Traditional Coroner, which after first 30 chapters delve into witchcraft, with almost no application. Example- An umbrella that lets you see diff patterns, which cannot be detected by modern equipment.
A mask and a paste that lets you see back in time, like when you apply the paste, you feel their feelings and the action you do it real time, this is explained in such a rigid way that I almost quit reading the novel, but I had a hope that it will improve which unfortunately crashed down in the end. The most laughable thing is how the MC tries to brag that his ancestor was in this and this department and created this art, but yes, the foolish ancestor of yours never wrote the worst case scenario, which is pretty much weird, like the novel was never checked for international platform.
1.
Mc's friend does not grow up, all he is shown doing is being shown how much of a shitty person he is, if he barfs or gives a reaction when a dead body is present. Come on, if you are looking at someone's brain, juices squirting out and you barf, does that make you seem an idiot, NO, definitely not, but in this novel, up-to the latest translation and raw, he has beens shown as a s*upid person with no backbone.
His position in the novel can be summarized by a few lines- He goes and gets the so called "everyday things" required by MC to investigate, which cannot be found in any general store, at almost every single case. He is always to be disgusted/made fun of/looked down up/tr*shed by MC and his love interests for barfing or making jokes, getting cold feet when they see a dead body or investigate a case. He is used as a third wheel intentionally, more than once, like almost a dozen times, in the first 300-... chapters to intervene between the MC and his girlfriend.
2. This novel is just a modern world fantasy, where the arrogant silk pants are other criminal profilers and other staff of police, every single time he has one or two working with him. The MC has a great plot armor almost in every case, either his girlfriend or his useless friend who is tr*shed upon by everyone, literally everyone. Any spirit wants to attack, no, it will prey upon his friend first and then the MC will chant some nonsense, with no resonance of words, like " I am the descendant of SONG family and evil spirit begone" and then will write a self-reflection that it was dangerous for his friend, it could have cost him his friend's life but he did not know about this until he became old. WHY IS THIS NONSENSE???Simple, the MC is shown being read every text in their family lineage and later on being self taught by the Grandfather himself but no, HE IS THE MC, AND, HE IS THE MC. That is the explanation for this novel.
3. MC's friend wants to woo a girl but that girl gets interested with MC instead, simply because MC tell her stories of cases he knows, when they are at a meeting with many other guys and gals. PATHETIC ATTEMPT BY THE AUTHOR. He knows no limits to degrade the surroundings just to let some shine on his MC.
4. MC's is someone who passed along a real knife which was later used by a character to kill his girlfriend (It was a play, where the character and his gf were supposed to kill each other, the sad ending trope of a play) because he had been hypnotized by someone, his girlfriend, someone in police, still believes him and no other charge is placed upon him, which is mind boggling as someone who also has spiritual powers and is on a diff. platform as copaed to us mortals, even if hypnotized, should be accounted upon for his carelessness but is set free for his so called contribution, which in turn killed several other people of the police force for him to earn. This novel might have been translated before or you may have read MTL, however, the current translations are amazing on wuxiaworld.
I am utterly devastated from the bad reviews on newer novels on wuxiaworld like this one.
Necropolis Immortal, Netherworld Investigator, Love code at the end of the world. All these novels are in no way worse than any other novel I read, in-fact, these novels including many others are my go-to after stacking a 100 chapter of them (at least, since the word-count of a chapter is around 1250... more>> words).

This story is about a Chinese boy whose family is a descendant of the Song family that practices forensics, they basically use ancient Chinese techniques to investigate the deaths of people.

It's an investigation novel with some sci-fi mixed in it, I am at chapter 146 and I like it very much, its one of those novels that makes you want to know what happens next since the mu*ders or investigations that happen are very mysterious, you wouldn't think that it isn't realistic and would think that there are definitely such cases that happen all the time.
The fact that the author makes you believe that such techniques are real and doable in real life shows how great the author is and how good the novel is.

Why you might like this novel:

— Everything is detailed in the novel, nothing is left out, every little detail is explained, you wouldn't feel confused after the end of the investigation, everything clarifies, that's what attracted me to this novel. A Hint of MYSTERY yet solved every time, so far I mean, something might not be solved in the future, who knows.
— I like the characters, the MC isn't dumb, nor very smart, just good at what he does and good at deductions, and he is currently young, so you would even be more amazed by his actions.
— You would want to know what happens next, you would want to know the ENDING of the novel.

Why you might not like the novel:

— The side characters are irritating, they don't think that ancient forensic doctor or whatever the MC's job is, is better than scientific tools and stuff. They always make bets that they lose but it's irritating watching them getting overthemselves.
— It's quick-paced, after every investigation, there is almost no break at all, just a chapter or two, some might find this a bad thing, but I like it, that just makes it quicker to reach the ending which I definitely want to know.
— I can't find anything else you might not like.

That's it, sorry for taking too long, however, my suggestion to you fellow reader is to not drop this novel after 10 chapters, just continue reading to 50, if you don't like it by then, then drop it.
If you do like it, then please come and rate it so that others would be aware of such a good hidden gem. <<less

Well just like everyone else said in other reviews, The execution is bad. I am not sure if the author is trying to give us a thriller or a bad comedy. For example MC is in progress of solving a mu*der case and is examining a head less corpse in a haunted room and the female police officer and MC's male friend are making jokes about if he is planing to cook the corpse and if he should get noodles and cumin to go along with the hotpot. The female... more>> officr's interaction with MC is very unrealistic she met him an hour ago and rather than following orders from her superior she is willing to take a gamble to trust MC's non traditional forensic investigation that could absolutely destroy her whole carrier if they dont produce results. <<less

The idea is really intriguing and I actually like this unique elements of a traditional coroner and how MC's world is entwined with spirits.

While the horror and mystery is kind of well built up, the execution is lacking sometimes and this is why the quality of this novel dips. Honestly I don't really find the horror to be that scary so maybe that's just me.

Also the side characters can be annoying. MC's friend for example is very irritating for me to read about.

So far I like it. Let's hope the... more>> quality doesn't drop later.

It's a decent read for the genre. 3.2/5 stars <<less

Spoiler

Well, what to say about this series. I really like the idea as it reminds me abit about Traffords Trading Club (the supernatural aspect). But as some have already said, I think it has good ideas and nice stories, but the execution could be better. The fact that im giving it -2 stars is mostly because of BS "science" that all this type of books are trying to sell (Ying and yang handprints, like wtf?, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, elixirs etc). I know some people say that's its a work of fiction, but unfortunately you can find this type of crap in real life too much. Well this is mostly just because of my own bias against this type of things. But all things considered, its OK series to read and waste extra time.
