I don’t want to die. I want to be free. To that end, I shall….reconcile myself to the fate of becoming a “monster”.

A strange disease that racks one’s entire body with intense never-ending pain, until the person slowly withers away and eventually dies. After a few years of braving through the pain, the boy is in no luxury to even feel despair. With nary a soul to tend to him, he breathes his last.

The next time he opened his eyes, the boy had become an “Undead” of the lowest rank through the power of an evil Necromancer.

The boy rejoices at having his earnest desire fulfilled, which is a body that will never feel pain. However, he realizes that he is still under someone’s control and how it was no different from when he was cooped up in the hospital ward.

But the world would not leave alone the boy who only wished for peace.

The Necromancer who revives the boy from the dead, names him “End” and attempts to gain control over him.

The Undead Knights, lay their lives on the line to persistently chase after and annihilate the beings of the darkness.

With countless monsters under their command, the Demon Lords rule over their own lands while they all contend for ultimate supremacy.

The motivation being survival and freedom. The requirements being caution and power.

This is the tale of the cowardly King of the Undead. In his pursuit for freedom, he heads into battle and turns tail at times. He knows when to fear his opponents and when to waver in his decisions.

I rated 4 above, but I would give it a 3.5. The story is pretty interesting and one thing I do like about it is how it isn't your typical MC where they cry about everything and try to win with the power of sunshine, rainbows, and friendship. The MC is willing to do anything it takes, even it is bad and that makes the MC feel more human, while the story feels more real and has weight to it. The one main downside is how repetitive the story it.... more>> In almost every chapter you will see 3 common phrases, one of them being "Vampires are stronger than Humans" and sometimes the author explains things multiple times. If it wasn't for that, I would probably give it at least a 4 is not 4.5. One of the nice things I like about the series is how the author sort of creates their own lore. Much if it the traditional vampire lore, but they expand on it and tweak it a little bit to freshen up the series. This is nice as oftentimes I think authors get stuck in the same old fantasy creatures and settings, and we are just support to go "ok". Where this author actually creates reasons behind them.

Another plus is that it isn't a harem. There is 1 girl, who becomes a love interest which is fine, but she related to the story in an important way. I'm somewhat worn out seeing every random village chief's daughter becoming a love interest even though they have little to no reason to and almost have no effect on the story other than a scene to make the MC blush.

Another thing I like is that the author isn't afraid to get dark. Often times fantasy has some dark wizard or monster and we are just supposed to assume they are evil even though it never shows it. In this story we actually see and feel why these two forces clash.

While I didn't rate it super high, I'm pretty picky and I would still highly recommend giving this one a read. I think most people who are into fantasy will enjoy it. It isn't very far at the moment, but still a great read if you are waiting in between novels and then you can come back to it after it gets a bit further. <<less

The arc with the necromancer is excellent, but the transition to the next portion kind of feels like a complete genre swap, and I think it will take a while to make it feel natural. The shift ultimately feels pretty forced.
Spoiler

I think the problem here is that the focus on the protagonist being a monster and corrupted, but I feel like his character would also genuinely feel a great deal of joy in the position he's in, and right now he's just a bit too gloomy, and static with his desire for survival.

I feel that the tone of the character enjoying life without pain, and his new freedom even if he's currently in trouble, would really help speed this portion of the story up, and right now its landing like its too much gloom and doom.

He's just achieved a great goal, the greatest ever in either life time, and we don't honestly get to enjoy it enough. The author really lingers on that emotion of gloom n doom too much during the finish of the necromancer arc if you ask me. Personal taste and all is what it is, but I feel that, he should've let the character feel success for a little longer, as he's been crippled for so long that I feel the emotion would really punch hard here.

The story reminded me a lot of the manga, the Dungeon Master, which has similar tropes and touches upon the same ideas in terms of evolution. However, like the manga, the story feels very incohesive especially in regards to the characters. Frankly, everything feels shallow and at times unrealistic.

The dynamic between the protagonist and the love interest is... h**ny. I mean it in the sense that there's no romantic side to it, and it's all about the sensuality of their interactions. I don't think that's necessarily a wrong way to portray it, and there are certainly amazing places you could go with it, but it feels like it was really only there to satisfy a s*xual fantasy.

The characters feel really shallow, and the way they react to situations feels odd and unrealistic. The Death Knights, for example, are completely shaken to the core by the love interest's disappearance, yet they are suddenly completely fine 10 days later, which in no world makes any sense. That's too unrealistic for a reader to suspend their belief on. And then even though the author sells this idea that they're perfectly fine now, it's completely contradicted by how much they try to get the love interest back and try to get revenge on the protagonist. It's weird in the first place how they were so shaken up for no apparent reason, in my honest opinion. At that time, they were confident they could get the love interest back without a problem. Their odd attachment to her is unrealistic too.

It's not memorable, there isn't a great plot to it besides these two characters are trying to run away from these big bad guys. I don't believe that there is such a thing as a bad plot idea, but it really just fails to be deliver it in a way where the reader can really enjoy it. There's no tangible end goal to this that the reader can look forward to. Sure, there's this concept of being able to live freely, but that's not what I mean. There has to be an apparent path towards this end goal that the reader can roughly look forward to so they have the sense that this story will pay off and that they will get their promised end. That's not there at all in this story.

Overall, I think it has potential but the way it was delivered was very amateur. But, I think the author is amazing for their determination and willpower to see this story to the end. I honestly believe they will become one of the best writers someday. <<less

I absolutely love this novel. I love the lore descriptions and the world building. The main character is cast as a tragic hero, he's a bit on the whinier side which I think irks some of the other reviewers. The main character is not OP, whatsoever by this chapter, but there's potential. Also a romance potential that the author teases from time to time that keeps me reading chapter to chapter. My only complaint is that while the main character is pretty well developed, his travel companion is extremely one... more>> dimensional. I hope they expand on that eventually. The first volume of the light novel has been released to yen press already so it'll be interesting to see the differences after publishing. <<less

This is a hidden gem the characters are well written and flushed out the plots amazing so far although there has definitely been a free heart breaking moments here and there. My only advise is if you don't like novels where actions are in the Greg area don't read this between the death knights and the vampires and undead it's really hard to tell who the real monsters are. Seriously the death knights have some really corrupted mindsets.

Ok I've had enough, I really tried. The MC, who's the author's rep, talks too much, repeating the same damn thing to the point of being completely annoying. As a result, entire chapters are spent with nothing happening except the MC repeating the same things. I feel sorry for those actually wait for updates, if I spent a week waiting for an update only to be served with the MC talking and talking about the same thing I'd probably go mad. Also the author went to great lengths to tell... more>> us that 'dark energy' is not actual energy only to alternate between treating it as such and not treating it as one afterwards, make up your mind dude <<less
