Makeup artist, Yoon Seol, was involved in a celebrity accident. When she opened her eyes, she was in the body a heroine in a novel.

For a moment, she was mesmerized by the beautiful female lead’s appearance, then she realized that she is in a novel known for torturous confinements.

In the novel, the heroine Lila is r*ped by three men. She was an unfortunate character who ended up being imprisoned and turned into an idiot.

“Merry bad endings* are not my thing! If it’s a bad ending, it’s a bad ending, why does it have to be merry!”

To avoid the original route, Yoon Seol, or rather, Lila, decided to make herself ugly with makeup with the use of a ‘secret pouch.’

Ten years later.

Lila, who avoided the original route, received a marriage proposal from an ugly duke. “Don’t be too scared, I’m just being honest with you because you weren’t honest with me first.”

But will her ending be a merry bad ending? Or a happy ending?

*merry bad ending – endings that may seem sad but the characters themselves are happy

The good:

FL's past life is actually useful here as she uses her knowledge of makeup to disguise herself and change the dark future lying in store for her. There is an attempt made at justifying why FL has to make herself ugly because of the "merry bad endings" of the novel where ... more>>
Spoiler

the three MLs covet her for her beauty and she is passed between them until she becomes an idiot in the end.

[collapse]

The descriptions of the FL's appearance and the way she dresses are also quite vivid rather than simply saying "FL made herself ugly", so I appreciate the author's efforts at letting us imagine what FL looks like.

The bad:

The novel seems to judge everyone by their looks. FL's cousin, who albeit is a horrible person, is described as even uglier than the uglified FL and Idk, the overall tone of the story seems very shallow?? There are entire paragraphs dedicated to the beauty standards of this world or FL talking about how pretty she actually is but she has to uglify herself, which may be slightly tedious to read. Also this a nitpick but I hate how freckles were used to make the FL "ugly" like hello freckles are so adorable?? But if I'm not wrong
Spoiler

ML has freckles so that may not be an intentional diss on the author's part.

[collapse]

The ugly:

The message the story seems to send -- "Oh, only pretty women get r*ped". As I'm still early in the story, this may not be what the author is trying to covey, but at first glance, that appears to be the author's theme. And that is a very dangerous message to send to readers, because it is simply untrue.

Furthermore, while I'm still early in the story, people shun and isolate FL because she's ugly. What I'm afraid is that if FL were to become pretty, then people will be nice to her again (this hasn't happened yet, it's a conjecture that I hope won't come to pass). Because it also sends a message that only pretty people deserve to be treated with respect.

The bottom line:

I was curious, so I picked up the novel to read the first few chapters. Beauty is the most prevalent element of the story. As in, it's mentioned in every chapter (or part of a chapter??). If that's what you're here for, then you can give this story a try. Otherwise, you may be disappointed. Because when you take away the paragraphs related to physical appearances, the story becomes a hollow shell that may collapse in on itself. <<less

The story wasn't one of the best I've read. It focuses too much on superficial appearance despite trying to remind the reader that the protagonist found 'true love' despite her initially ugly looks through the supposedly ugly duke. However, the message that beauty is skin deep wasn't really convincingly conveyed throughout the story other than the blatant fact that the author just kept telling us oh-theres-more-to-beauty-than-outside-appearance, like stop telling me but SHOW me through your storytelling. The fact that the protagonist, ML, and the young boy aren't even ugly and... more>> that most of the time they are just perceived as such because of freckles (yes freaking freckles?!??) is just too laughable and unconvincing (and even childish). The novel wanted to give this message about true beauty but it felt forced and pretentious cuz FL isn't even ugly and after revealing her real face (she's apparently one of the most beautiful women in the empire) suddenly everyone regretted being mean to her. It just shows people don't really give a f*ck until of course, you suddenly become a goddess of beauty and then thats the time they'd feel bad for what they did. And every character that were treated badly because of their appearance only had to improve their appearance, cover their imperfections (one of them was suffering from acne) and that will apparently keep them from being bullied from society. Overall, the novel only emphasized how physical appearance is so important and people won't feel bad for what they did to you unless you become beautiful, and that removing freckles can make a huge difference in making you look attractive. I just can't help but roll my eyes typing this. I've rated this 3.5 stars and I'm being generous at that. <<less

Ah yes... The ugly lady's secret pouch.

Is it big or is it small? What does it look like? If you are nice, she will show you. She might even let you touch it and take pictures. But don't feel special, she's shown quite a few people her magic pouch.

Be prepared to be amazed with the things she can do with this pouch. I, for one, was amazed at all the stuff that could be put in it.

I highly recommend the ugly lady's magic pouch. I know that you will enjoy... more>> it too. Don't discount it just because the lady is ugly. <<less

3.9 stars but guess it has to be rounded up. The story was written well but the plot was tiresome by volume 3. The 3 origMLs were obsessed with the origMC and were awful. As mentioned the novel was R-19 when the new MC was pulled into the story. In the new timeline, Theo, the origML is the same but feels a strong connection with MC even when he can't stand the way she looks. MC makes herself as hideous as possible. Another reader criticizes the author's use of... more>> freckles to describe what is considered ugly in the novel world which I believe is misunderstood. I believe the author was trying to describe hyperpigmentation or melanated skin which can be quite strikingly different to people who are not used to it. I grew up seeing people who were shunned for being chubby, child of divorce parents, adopted, race, religion, hair color and or skin colors. It's disappointing that this happens in real life but if a person can't fit in than they're on their own unless they have the confidence to preserve above it all which is hard if they are just kids. Really, everyone needs someone cheering for them to help or it is lonely doing everything on their own.

Spoiler

Alfonso is another origML who is a bit of a psychopath; however, I find him to be very smart. He sees through the hypocrisy that most of the characters have acted out or pretended to be in both timelines. I actually like him but he wasn't given much of a story. Heinrich is a sad, turned crazy guy origML in the new timeline. He gets a distorted happy ending. Now the new ML was no surprise the origVillain turned ML. He annoyed me for allowing his own territory to have lookism. His territory is under his control but he was too lazy to cultivate a better way of life until the MC came. Theo did love origMC but treated her badly which is why she could never forgive him. He self inflicted his own punishment in the end.

[collapse]

I didn't like the so-called 'protagonist trials' added for drama. Found it unnecessary and unrelated to the story. By volume 5, I was wanting the story to end. I liked some parts of the plot and I skimmed through what was just repetitive light smut. I like smut but I think maybe I didn't like the MC very much so I wasn't interested in reading about their intimacy. The MC annoyed me at times for being reckless when she knows very well how vicious people can be. She contributed to the situation when she could have easily avoided it. I did find the ML cool if not a bit lazy about taking care of his territory and people. <<less
