Dorothy, a woman who suffered discrimination and disregard.

She was driven to the point of mu*dering her elder brother, and afterward rose to power as emperor…but unloved by all, even by her sweetheart, she was ultimately denounced as a tyrant and sentenced to execution.

But then she opened her eyes to find herself in her childhood days.

“It can’t end like that again.”

I won’t commit the same regrets.

I’m going to live honestly.

This time, in this life, that is my goal.

Came back after seeing it again. The MC is a princess from the kingdom, have a brother who's a crown prince that cares about her the most but due to lack of affection and the bro got all the attention of the father, she grew up with jealousy and hatred toward him. He got killed by MC's sword and become a tyrant. It's true that what she did to the OG ML is absolutely no-no. Anyway, the OG ML su*cides because of 'that' and she end up losing her will... more>> to live. Died from execution and regress back the time she was born and decided to live a good life instead of the path she take from previous timeline. Now I remember why I dropped this halfway before. Gosh, the Father... He neglected MC because of her 'defect' and obsessed with the family's lineage. His ending disappointed me. He only realised everything when he's out of breath.... Anyway, the ML! He's not bad, but obsessively in love with MC even in 1st timeline. He will do everything for her, but end up regretting stuffs in 1st timeline, in 2nd timeline, he decided to help her live a happy life. <<less

So far the story is interesting! I quite like the fact that the MC just didn't leave everything behind and got over it, she still dealing with her feelings as she grows up. Most of the stories of that type or they want revenge or they just get over stuff and move on into the plot.

This is the second time I write this comment. I said before the story confused me, but after mulling over it for a while, I can honestly say that it makes me angry instead.

Why? The title "the tyrant wants to live honestly" is quite telling, if you know what the author means by tyrant, honesty, and their contrast. Succinctly put, here, a tyrant is a woman rising to power by force because the patriarchy refuses her until the end, living honestly is letting go of everything, even ones own desires,... more>> and the contrast means that those are the only choices as far as the author is concerned. In short, women should stay in the kitchen and let men handle power.

Elaborating on that, the protagonist is someone who is described as talented (note that I say described as, not shown as, but that's minor quibble, all in all) as well as competitive, and angry at being discriminated against. She is said to have acted upon her ambitions in a previous life and succeeded, forcing everyone to recognize her ability and power. Then because of course for the author women are ruled by their emotions, she self-destroys and the empire with it because a guy will not love her.

She dies and goes back to the time she was a child, and then decides to abandon every scrap of ambition she had, ignore every talent she has, let go of her feelings, everything that makes her feel alive, to be honest (text says "saintly").

In contrast, we have the ML
Spoiler

, he went back with her, but he is an unrepentant mu*derer (mu*dered in cold blood at least one major good character who never did anything against anyone just to spite FL's target of affection), manipulator (manipulated everyone including FL to push her the way he wanted her to go), liar (obviously) groomer (regretted FL kept her memories and he could not carve young FL into what he wanted her to be)

[collapse]
but he gets rewarded for being such a creep and the narrative pushes readers (and from the chapter comments it actually works) to disregard everything because he's magnanimous ("in love") enough to force FL to "borrow" his power.

So yes, not only is it another instance of a story where the girl is disliked when she is rightfully self-confident and ambitious, and then unrealistically liked when she buries herself, which is abhorrent in itself, but it goes further with the underlying message that it's best if the female is unassuming, self sacrificing and depends entirely on the ML's power, but it's more than OK for the ML to be the worst person ever and do everything that is denied to the female if he "loves" her. Despite the good writing, this is among the worst reactionary anti-feminist tripe I've read from NU.

Spoiler

PS: I did not talk about characterisation, but it deserves a mention: everything is drawn to show the previous life FL lived as bad, people oppressing her (her brother) are sad about the situation (but doing nothing, literally, every when his subjects or himself are being physically attacked), people not loving her have magical circumstances, etc, and the FL herself is never shown to have any qualities that would make her emperor. Actually, as I expect it, someone who deposes the reigning emperor through armed rebellion, snatches the seat, and stays in power (it's not a raid) is a charismatic, strong willed leader, but more than that, is someone who has SUPPORT. The land doesn't govern itself, armies don't appear from nowhere, neither does food. Two people everyone hate can rule noone. That support means that the opposition is also known, and would be ousted out of power following the coup, among other things, yet the story in its rush to show an "evil" empress tells it like she did it alone, like she left the opposing nobles in power, and that the opposing nobles are literally too dumb to live, being in an inner court yet daring to insult the emperor. If the premise had been honestly written, nobody would want her to "atone", because it would be the victory of the faction supporting the best ruler, against unyielding misogynists (tell me, what prevented the bro from abdicating, instead of doing that drama su*cide?) If it had been correctly written, it would have shown an adult who can think for herself and let a childish fling go, even more when said fling would have been executed or exiled since he was supposed to have been part of the loyalist houses fighting her.

[collapse]
Anyway, there is a contradiction at the core in that if the girl had ever been shown to really be able to be emperor, she would not be the pathetic character created to say that women should stay out of power to prevent catastrophy.

Added one star because the translation is really good. <<less

This is one of my favourite novel so far.

Our MC is unfortunate as a child. In her first life, she had always wish for her father love in vain. She was jealous of her brother who can receive her father love, chance, power and everything she could never rightfully have. Thus, she killed her brother for the throne and become a tyrant. Then, imprison her first love (who didn't love her) in the palace until he kill himself. (There is more to it but I won't spoil) She also started... more>> wars, disregard nobles and live in extreme luxury resulting in the death of millions. In the end she was executed as a tyrant. And so after get a second chance, she want to be a good child who doesn't hurt anyone.

First I would like to write about who might enjoy or not enjoy this novel.

If you are looking these elements, this novel might not be for you;

- All fluffy without drama where everyone spoil MC in her second life.

- An innocent and cheerful MC (she is charismatic in her own way but definitely not innocent nor cheerful)

- satisfying face slapping and every bad people get punished.

- An overpowered MC or ml. (They are smart but still powerless when compared to many adults)

What to be looking forward to;

- A family drama (with some fluff between but still a lof of drama)

- Heavy psychological elements.

- Healing from trauma and redeemtion of MC.

- Realistic plot and world build (except for magic, it look very realistic)

- Characters development in all aspects.

- Every character have head and doesn't seem forced.

And here is my personal opinion.

What I love about this novel is how it reflects a life of an unloved child and effect of an unfair treatment between siblings in such a realistic way. There are also many elements that are frustratingly realistic. For example;

- How her father still treat MC like sh*t even in her second life and never feel like he did anything wrong.

- The way people who isn't so close to her look at MC does not dramatically change because she became a good child who don't make trouble.

- MC isn't just suddenly become a saint and take her time to slowly study how to do good things. The character development is gold.

I also like how MC past is still refect though the whole novel. The trauma and negative feelings she had in her past life does not just disappear but alway stay and reflect in her thoughts and actions. And alongside with her, we got to see how she slowly healing from those bad experiences to start to open up to those around her, learn to accept and love herself and to live her second chance well in a way that beneficial to others and herself.

If these are what you are looking for, then this novel should be a must read for you. <<less

This is the first villainess story I've read where the female lead is seriously emotionally impacted by the wrong that she did in her previous life. I love watching her struggles to change into a better person, even though the world and situation she's born in would turn anyone into a villain. Choosing to be a kind person despite your situation is hard, and I feel the novel depicts that beautifully.

The romance is also unexpected, but beautiful. I won't say too much about it (no spoilers ;)), but what was... more>> once sour and cold and desperate turns into something warm, gentle, and kind.

Strength is not always built through brute force and violence. The strength to be good, though often overlooked, contains it's own special power that echoes through generations of people. Highly recommend giving this a read. <<less

I love how this story is :

1. Has realistic character development. FL was evil, and she was struggling. Everyone has logical reason to do what they did. FL struggled even years after her 2nd life started, I cried multiple times. She is strong.

2. FL is just like someone you know. She looked strong but she's not, she was smart but she's suck in socializing, she was not your typical perfect main lead. She has list of flaws she had, and that's what makes us reader emphatize her.

3. The novel already... more>> had manhwa going on and the art is nice! <<less

The premise is nice, however It is like a low rated TV drama.

A person who became an Empress through tyranny reborn. AN EMPRESS.

However upon returning, she is a simpleton, who can't do a thing. How did she become an EMPRESS then? Through swordsmanship, come on. The premise of the novel is not a power fantasy where one can rule whole empire through tyranny. One needs subjects to achieve such tyranny. So, a social successfulness is required. But we do not see such features on our main character.

If you're not searching... more>> for a logical, in-depth novel and a just a causal romance novel then go ahead. I felt it is more like a 3rd rate TV Drama. <<less

it's a nice novel.

yes, a lot of characters have a lot of shortcomings that led to the trauma and heartbreak of each and every one of them. dorothea's first life is a tragedy in all ways possible.

but I like this novel because it spoke to me. it resonated with me, believe it or not, because I too see myself as a bad person. obviously not the exact same as dorothea, but her nauseating guilt and low self-worth just hit too close to home.

what moved me was her journey from there.... more>> when she was given a 2nd chance... in the form of a 2nd life. when she wanted to repent, but her past sins always came to haunt her making life hard and excruciating for her.

then she slowly started to heal... and not just be forgiven by others, but to forgive herself too. because the self guilt for one's actions that cant be undone is one of the hardest things to overcome. none of her past victims remembered her sins- only she did, and so she was always tormented by the fact that they were never mad or resented her. because, again, they were in a different timeline.

this review is coming off as a bit too personal but it's just one of the few novels that has truly moved me in a while. maybe its because im coming from a shitty place right now, still. the moment in the novel that deeply impacted me is this: it was when dorothea found redemption... and accepted that her "greed" for the throne, "greed" for her father's attention, and "greed" for a spirit... was once just her hope and dreams. she too deserved to be loved and be given things.

overall the novel had this depressing undertone that had me not loving any of the characters but also not hating any. well except stefan and clara, theyre adorable. sort of healed me in a way, so a very worthwhile read <<less
