In order to coax his mentally sick sister to see the doctor, Xu Sheng sought out Tang Zhi and put forward a request for him to marry his sister. He even gave a condition that Tang Zhi could not refuse; he will help Tang Zhi’s mother with the case that sent her to jail.

This is a really good story! It's slow burn and there's some angst, but it's also sweet to see the romance unfold, especially from the gong's perspective. I really struggled with Xu Sheng's character in the beginning, he's casually rude and even a bit cruel to Tang Zhi. The relationship is very unequal for a very long time, since it's basically an employer-employee s*xual relationship where the gong holds all the power and can treat the shou the way he wants, since the shou is afraid to say no. The... more>> CP are also quite bad at communicating, especially Xu Sheng - although this is understandable given his upbringing, he's not used to feelings or caring for others, he basically learns this from Tang Zhi bit by bit.

One of the best stories I've read so far by Ka Biqiu - doesn't completely beat Outside the Law, but it's really good and a rather sweet story. <<less

Why is this only a 3.8?

As with all of Ka Biqiu's works, it's another slow burn romance.

It started off with a contractual agreement and Xu Sheng was very cold to Tang Zhi and ignorant of his past trauma. He was kinda mean towards Tang Zhi but it wasn't long till he started to care for him.

Xu Sheng actually fell in love with Tang Zhi first but was too silly to acknowledge his own feelings. He kept telling himself that it was Tang Zhi who was dependent on him. When Tang... more>> Zhi slowly fell for him, Tang Zhi was reminded by Xu Sheng's harsh words earlier when they first met and kept himself from falling in love with Xu Sheng. It was quite heart breaking when you see two idiots in love but refuse to speak up.

The ending felt a bit lacking even though it was a HE. An extra perhaps for proper wedding and their married life etc. <<less

I enjoyed this novel! It's nice to see the perspectives of both Tang Zhi and Xu Sheng as they slowly fall in love, finding out the little things hidden in each other. Although their relationship didn't start off on the best foot, I adore their tender moments of reliance and opening up to each other as the novel progressed.

He is not a fan of this fake marriage to Xu Sheng's sister (Xu Keyu) because (1) he is gay, (2) she has also stalked and harassed him, as well as trying to make advances that triggered his childhood trauma with women. However, he puts up with it for the mere chance to free his mother from prison. Despite this, he remains sassy and resourceful when the situation calls for it, since he works as Xu Sheng's assistant after the accident. There is angst involving his insecurities and jealous towards Xu Sheng's potential fiancée, but it's not that bad

About the ML, Xu Sheng

Initially cold to our MC, he doesn't understand why his sister would chase such a man for a reason other than appearances. Eventually, he begins to warm up and even crave Tang Zhi's presence as they spend more time together after his sister's accident, with Tang Zhi becomes an important source of comfort to him. I enjoyed the section of angst where he wonders if his obsession with Tang Zhi paralleled his sister's, and if Tang Zhi was simply putting up with him as well (he wasn't).

The ending was indeed a little shorter than I would've liked, but that along with the extras really warmed my heart. <<less
